Pros: The fact that the cost vs amount of storage you receive is incredible with Crash Plan. I have looked through so many providers for online backups and I don't believe anyone comes close to what is offered by this software.

The fact that once you you install the program and sign in, the interface is very straight forward allowing you to select what on your computer you want to back up, all the way down to the entire contents of your C: drive is great and makes the product easy to use.

Notifications are also a great feature to notify you if there was a problem during a backup.

Cons: My major issues come down to resource usage and customer support. This software, even though it does fantastic things, is an absolute resource hog.

In the past I have been able to run constant backups incrementally at 15 minute intervals without much slow down of my systems. Within the past year however, on a 16GB memory system, as soon as crash plan begins to backup my memory usage jumps from about 15% to over 50% until I stop the program completely. On windows server 2012, the same issue happens, whether Crash Plan is installed for every user, or just my admin account, the instantaneous system slow down is there to where everyone on the system is effected.

My two attempts at contacting support about the issue resulted in almost a 1 week wait time between calls/emails and the answer I ended up receiving was that they would no longer be supporting servers with the Crash Plan application. However present day their website still says it supports windows servers.

The idea behind the program is amazing, I just wish the execution and support was more clear and helpful.

Overall: Unlimited backup storage of my computer system with revision history

Pros: CrashPlan is really easy to use. I love using it because I can backup to another computer for FREE! The only part of the app that is pay is if you want to backup the the Code42 cloud. If you don't use the cloud, you get easy & free backups! The versioning is also really nice. We can restore a file from any point along it's life. CrashPlan is used to backup our general file server, our email server, and our SQL database dumps. I can centrally restore any file from any server from my location. We migrated to CrashPlan from Windows Backup. It took a lot of overhead out of our backup procedure. CrashPlan has also saved our files from Virus' on a few occasions. With the outbreak of Ransomware, CrashPlan really helps save our files from being encrypted.

Cons: CrashPlan is written in Java, which means, it's pretty much the only reason I have Java installed. Supposedly, a non-Java client is coming, but who knows when or if that will happen. It is also _really_ difficult to manage on a headless server. You basically have to create a SSH tunnel, then from a separate computer 'fake' out that installation of CrashPlan into thinking it needs to connect through the SSH tunnel. Done properly, your desktop CrashPlan will connect to the CrashPlan backend on the headless server. It would be really nice to be able to manage a headless server without any SSH tunneling, or port forwarding, or any of that.

Overall: We no longer need to manage our backup infrastructure. CrashPlan takes care of this. Previously, with Windows Backup, we needed to periodically purge our backups because when using a network location, Windows Backup can't do versioning. So we'd end up filling terabytes of storage of the same files over and over again. CrashPlan fixes this problem for us!

Comments: It just runs... You go to lunch, you go into a meeting. Its running. You go on holiday its running. Code 42 platform can be used to backup end point devices throughout the world to your own private server. Code 42's cloud servers or a combination of both. You can specify global settings or individual ones. Customising to the exact level required for you or your business. It can be deployed for a few dozen machines or thousands. It gives us viability on our servers data and endpoint client activities providing more insight than just a regular backup client.

Pros: The client is customisable. It can be deployed silently and is configurable from the machine or can be locked and the configuration done via the server. New abilities allow the user to restore data form their backups if starting again on a new machine. This can aid migrations and ease pressure on facilities. Strong encryption, compression and an easy to use interface make using the client a pleasure. Documentation is very detailed and easy to read and follow along. Code42's support are extremely helpful and pleasant!

Cons: Recent redesigns of the client and server interface have left things confusing. The attempts to make the whole system minimal results in it being more difficult and annoying to use. Some features are difficult to find or too many layers deep now. The interface is also less responsive than the previous versions and often doesn't update for a long period of time. The web interface for the main server does not work properly in Safari which is a big annoyance for us and our users. Code42 seem to be continually changing the name of the product. Crashplan Pro. Crashplan ProE, now Code42 platform. It can be confusing and again frustrating. Code 42's support team are excellent! I cannot praise them enough. However I do not have the same experience with the Sales team, Code42 are after certain customers and in that refuse and do not want to help other customers which has propogated bad will throughout the community that has supported them from a startup.

Recommendations to other buyers: Do it. It is much better than any of the alternatives we have looked at. It is a strong class leading product with a bright future!

Excellent backup engine for any platform.

Comments: The CrashPlan architecture allows versioning, continuous backup on OS X, Windows, and Linux desktop clients, and Code42 offers PROe private cloud servers for each of these platforms as well. I've used CrashPlan PROe (private cloud server with standard CrashPlan client) for three years, in multiple small business settings. It's a five star product, with five star support, but a few small but persistent browser compatibility issues, and one major licensing problem, keep it from earning all five stars from me.

Pros: Installing, maintaining, and updating the PROe server is trivial on both Debian Linux and OS X. (One-click updates directly from the administrative console would be a nice addition, since locating update files on the Code42 site is not as quick as it perhaps should be, but that's a minor nuisance). Likewise, installing and configuring clients is fast and easy, and once the client software is installed on a workstation, the administrative console allows control of all client settings, saving legwork. Client access can be restricted to ensure that backups are not interrupted, and CrashPlan PROe has a complete set of legal hold tools available in a separate administrative interface should your organization require them. The client is lightweight and offers good granular control over bandwidth use. The server is extremely flexible, allowing any number of storage points on any number of running servers, even across server platforms, and the CrashPlan architecture further allows any client to be delegated as a storage point for other clients, in the case of, for instance, a satellite office scenario, disaster recovery, or server maintenance.

Cons: The only real operating nuisance I've encountered is browser incompatibility with the otherwise lovely administrative console, which does not scale properly for Mobile Safari, and which presents a baffling "server disconnect" message on Safari for OS X. On the desktop, one can simply use Firefox or Chrome, but a proper mobile Safari theme--or even the ability to permanently eliminate the client download prompt when accessing the console from a mobile browser--would be a huge improvement for those of us who do an increasing amount of our admin tasks from our mobile devices. The ugly is that this wonderfully designed, private cloud backup system, which was once my first choice for small business clients, is now available only in packages of 25 licenses and up. Not only does this make no sense from a supply side¿Code42 incurs no storage or infrastructure overhead from private cloud backup, so one would think they would prefer to sell these licenses¿but it arbitrarily shuts out small businesses from a product which is otherwise perfect for the small business use case, forcing these businesses, often creative firms which generate multiple gigabytes of new data each hour, to rely on Code42's public cloud product (try uploading 2 terabytes on virtually any broadband connection in the US) or, more realistically, to look elsewhere for onsite backup solutions. I used to recommend CrashPlan PROe to all my small business clients. I can no longer do so, not because the product is not excellent¿it is¿but because Code42 literally will not sell it to them if they can't buy 25 or more licenses. The mind boggles at whatever bean-counterish logic led to this decision, which both locks small businesses out of an otherwise ideal product for their needs, and amounts to Code42 throwing away all potential revenue from those in the small business sector who cannot rely on public cloud backup alone. I'd encourage small businesses and consultants working with small business to contact Code42 anyway, and put some pressure on them to revise this policy. CrashPlan PROe is otherwise as close to a perfect product as I have seen in the last ten years of IT, and it is simply foolish to refuse to sell it because a client has a smaller budget or smaller needs.

Pros: This software is easy to use and configure. I have recommended this software to others who are not tech savvy and they loved it. It's easy enough for them to "set and forget" and files recovery is as easy as selecting the folder/file you want to recover then process it.

Cross platform is a definite positive and we needed a solution that worked with MAC and Windows.

Cons: I have used this software for a few years installed on a MAC and a Windows machine. It was good until I upgraded to Sonicwall Gateway. With the latest firmware it seems as that CP on the MAC had a hard time bypassing the firewall security so I had to explicitly open all the required ports then it started running normally again. Months went by without any issues then problem with the MAC machine reappeared where it cannot connect to the CP server (meanwhile no configuration change was made to the firewall).

I have worked with both technical support from CP and Sonicwall, both have different ideas of what may be the problem. It's just odd that the MAC CP is having problems communicating out of the firewall while the Windows machine is fine. Further finetuning of the firewall will be required.

In conclusion, CP is a good reliable and cost effective backup solution providing that you are behind generic firewall. However, you may run into frustrating issues if you are behind advance security gateways like Sonicwall, Fortinet, etc. and it's not as low maintenance as one would expect it to be.

Overall: Easy of use and cost effective.

Pros: It runs continuously in the background to ensure that the files selected are backed up.
The Crashplan client automatically backs up to ensure that customers are using the very latest client and are not in danger of security leaks.

The Crashplan client is cross-platform and will run on Linux and Mac

Cons: Code42 appears to have removed their plan for standard household users and now only has plans for small and large businesses. Unfortunate for the average household computer user.

When I used Crashplan for backup in Beijing, China, the upload speeds were horrendously slow. I assume this was not the fault of Crashplan, but the result of serious Internet throttling by the internet provider or by state security apparatus in China where all connections to the outside world are severely curtailed. Backing up 200gb of data took nearly half a year. But my experience was likely unusual.

Based on other user reports of Crashplan, the upload and download speeds are quite good.

Overall: Outstanding performance over the 3 year period that I used it. Once my data was uploaded (it took nearly a year), I was assured that my PhD research was safe.

I stopped using it because the internet in China was simply too restricted and curtailed to make it useful.

Pros: This was the best and lowest cost backup tool on the market...when the Home product was available. In August of 2017 Code42 shifted away from Home and is focusing on enterprise and small business. The Home product was AMAZING. It backed up quickly, offered unlimited storage, and allowed you to backup multiple computers at the same time. Plus you could back up to other friend/family's computers to avoid having to pay for the service at all. This had everything a home user could want and at an amazing price. NOTHING came close. And I mean NOTHING!

Cons: Unfortunately, Code42 has left the Home market and is focusing on enterprise and small business. For those two segments, this is a great product, but I feel like dropping the Home market is a disservice to their existing Home user base. They should have allowed existing customers to continue forward with their Home product and Home product pricing. I get that they want to change their focus, but moving away will really hurt. That's a bad thing, but it speaks to the excellence of their Home product.

Comments: Code42 has done a fantastic job creating a solid enterprise product that is easy to use, transparent to the end-users, and backed by a company that takes an active interest in the input of their customers. Even with the trend of moving data to the cloud, end-point backup remains a critical necessity in the modern end-user computing environment. Systems fail, users delete data, users switch computers and things still go wrong and make backups a necessity. CrashPlan is equally useful for file recovery or simply moving a user to a new computer. Client backup products are not always without impact to end-point performance. CrashPlan's interface is simple and easy to use. Virtually no training is required for both end-users and administrators. Granted that backup is not an overly complicated process, but CrashPlan has refined the process better than the competition. Whether using the on-prem or off-prem option, CrashPlan provides security and stability for your company's critical data. My only real criticism with Code42, is that in the last year they have not focused sufficiently on the development of CrashPlan. I feel like they made a poor choice to focus too much on SharePlan, which was not something that was critical to their core business. CrashPlan is also a bit behind the curve on features related to legal hold and e-discovery, but they are trending in the right direction. The best part of CrashPlan is that is just works. Its a solid, well-written product with great support that give users a sense of security about the data that keeps the business working.

Pros: Easy to use Easy to administer Minimal impact to end-user performance

Cons: Code42 should focus more on the core business and less on additional offerings Legal-hold e-discovery capabilities are still immature, need more focused development

Pros: Inexpensive, remarkably reliable.

Cons: Tends to be a bit of a memory hog.

Overall: I have been using CrashPlan for over two years for about 30 of my customers. Aside from a few issues with memory usage for larger backup sets (issues that were quickly resolved with by a chat with support), I have had almost no problems. Backups run, complete, and restores always work.

The software's focus is on backing up endpoints, not servers. But it works fine with simple file servers and is a very inexpensive way to protect data. It's really a last resort backup for most of my clients - not something they depend on from day to day, but it's a great solution in case they end up with a hole in the ground for an office.

The setup process only takes a few minutes. Restores are relatively intuitive - just pick a date and then pick a file. Small restores can be done through a web interface. I have never had to do any large scale restores, but I can imagine that they would be difficult since there is no way to have a hard drive shipped to you - the restores have to be done over the internet through their software.

Pros: I love how my business version of CrashPlan continuously monitors my computers for any changes then uploads those changes to the cloud. Even though I run image backups of all our computers on the network, I will backup all important files to these computers which are then encrypted, uploaded, & versioned so that I can always go back in time for previous saves of my files. The support staff is great as well. Price is great for our plan which I believe includes 3 computers (originally just 1).

Cons: The interface is a little unintuitive especially when it comes to restoring previous versions of your files, but once you do it a few times it's no big deal.

Overall: The versioning of your files is awesome, and the upload of changed/new files is really quick and can be set to backup at certain times with specified processor usage.

Pros: This is the best backup software for a home user ever. The best part is that you can backup an external USB Drive. I run it on my mac and have been using it for 5+ years. The software runs in the background and backs up my files so I don't have to worry. They have plenty of settings to limit when it backups and how many resources to use. Since I have a capped bandwidth I set it so I just upload in the evening. I've recovered a couple of files by logging into the web interface and downloading a zip of them.

Cons: I'm very sad that they will no longer offer consumer accounts at the end of August 2018 if I'm a small business I would use crashplan. I'm super bummed that the software I recommended to so many is going away :(

Overall: It kept all my data, photos and docs safe for years !!

Comments: In higher education, students are reliant upon the ability for the faculty and staff to produce and support a quality product, which is their education. In order for this to happen on a consistent basis, the staff and faculty must be able to do their jobs. Data must be available all the time. But in the real world, the ongoing battle rages between those on the outside who have a desire to disrupt work with the motivation of making a profit at other's expense. There is also the battle of hardware failures, and user errors to name a few. There is so many ways to lose data, it's amazing we are able to accomplish anything at all. Enter Code42 CrashPlan. We started using this product several years ago. We started using this product several years ago. We were on a tape backup system that honesty was a poor excuse for data backup. From request to recovery was at least an 18-hour turnaround time. And recovery was a crap shoot at best. With Code42 CrashPlan, turn around is only limited by the amount of data being recovered. The more data to recover, the longer it takes to download. And 95% of the time, recovery is completed in 30 minutes or less. There have been times we were hit by ransomware viruses, but because of CrashPlan, the encrypted data was replaced in a matter of a few short hours. So we are extremely pleased with CrashPlan. We have it deployed to over 1000 machines including some servers. Training users was not a problem. The software uses very little resources which is always a plus.

Pros: Reliable backups, not dependent on platform. Peace of mind. Easy data recovery 24/7. It in your hands and in your control.

Cons: Not cheap, but well worth the expense.

Pros: Strong encryption helps keep our files safe. Unlike many backup services, Crashplan for Small Business allows you to backup files on any number of external hard drives for no additional fees. Also, you aren't required to move the files/folders you want to backup into a proprietary backup folder...this means you do not have to alter the structure of your file system to have an effective and full backup.

Power Tip: divide your backup into multiple backup sets for increased efficiency and peace of mind.

Cons: I wish you could more easily view the backup log so you could reassure yourself that your most important files are 100% backed up to the latest version. UX is usable but a bit awkward...it can take several somewhat convoluted click-throughs to find the setting you need to alter.

Overall: Peace of mind knowing our files are safe.

Pros: Small app that does a good job of backing up important files. It auto restarts and rarely fails. If the app does fail the system notifies you via email. It keeps multiple revisions of the files so you can not only restore them quickly but go back to a later date if you need to. The app allows you to set up a local backup as well as your cloud backup for quick restores. Definitely, a must if you are required to store legal documents for up to 8 years like our company.

Cons: The app can sometimes get stuck on huge files but most of the time it resolves the issue without assistance. Can sometimes take up a lot of RAM depending on how many files you need backed up.

Comments: I am shocked by the number of people that do not have any backup whatsoever, and even more shocked when their only backup is a manual "copy from here paste to there every 6 months". Whether you are backing up your family photos, music, documents, receipts or business information, project files and work, you will find Crash Plan to be the best option both in terms of usability and cost. I've personally restored files from crash plan off of backups of computers that I no longer have because they failed, up to 2 years earlier. I back up my whole house. Offsite and every day. It's automated and you only pay around $6 a month so there is no excuse not to do it.

Pros: Peace of mind! I have over 1GB of photos as I am an avid amateur photographer of my kids and other things. I also take lots of video. It's all backed up. All of my tax returns, anything is there backed up. I've had computers die, built a new one and then adopted an existing backup so it doesn't have to redo 500-800GB of data all over.

Cons: It can take some time to initially seed your backup if you have close to 1TB or more. And the connection depends largely upon your internet connection quality. The cons are not a show stopper for me. I might miss one or two files being backed up from time to time until the next day.

Pros: The service allows backup to both the Cloud and a local backup (HD or external disk) if desired. You can back up multiple computers within the same account.

Cons: The new ux is terrible. I can't figure it out. The old one was simple, intuitive, and easy to use.
The default settings cause performance to decrease over time, which is "upside down".
The service stops frequently, and requires manual intervention to restart.
Support provided me with fixes (which ultimately didn't work) to be issued by terminal command. A backup service shouldn't require terminal commands!

Overall: Backup my computers.

Pros: I like that it is always running in the background, backing up as people work and make changes to files. I feel secure knowing my data is encrypted and stored offsite. The software and portal are very easy to use. Customer service and Tech support are great too.

Cons: There is not much to not like with this software. It just works and does what it says it does. If you have older servers, they don't support Server 2003 so that could be a disappointment.

Overall: Secure, Offsite Backup that is protected from ransomware. The services is extremely easy and they have great tech support for questions.

Comments: We use CrashPlan PROe in a hybrid cloud model with the server in-house and the store points in Code 42's cloud. We moved from local store points to the cloud because the cost made sense and we could stop buying onsite storage as our needs increased. We backup all of our mobile users with PROe and it really has been great for us. The console gives us plenty of insight into which machines are not backing up or having issues. We can control all of the client variables (versions, speed, network interfaces, etc) from the console and push out the setting to our clients individually or by orgs.

Pros: The master console! All settings and controls for all clients are configurable from one console. The reporting is great and gives us great insight as to how much data is on our client machines and who to scold when thier music folder is 500gb. The fact that if one of my Executives is traveling and gets their machine stolen or lost and being able to just download the app and sign in on a new machine and start restoring thier data is AMAZING. We had that happen, Mac stolen in London enroute to a big pitch for new business. He called me in an absolute panic. In a 5 minute phone call we had the data he needed for the meeting restoring to a new machine that he had just purchased at the Apple store, when he left the Apple store he had all of his data back, with 1 FIVE minute phone call.

Cons: In previous versions Java usage was a bit out of control, but they have had that fixed for a few versions now, so no cons at all.

Pros: I am a software consultant for a fortune 100 company, and they have rolled out CrashPlan to all the macs. The software just runs..and never stinks CPU to back up your machine. You never have to worry about the software...it just does its job and backs you up. Highly recommended.

Cons: when on VPN, CrashPlan still attempts to back you up...I wish there was a feature that would sense that you are on VPN and throttle or delay the backups (a setting, not everyone would like this feature)

Overall: backups with out fuss

Disappointed at the price increases.

Pros: Ok so I have been using this program for over 4 years now and still love it. Really helps to put my mind at ease. Just set it up and tell it what you want to backup and forget about it.

Cons: I hate the new backup engine. It takes so long and you can see the upload and download speed anymore in mbps, only time which is subjective and useless. I also hate the doubling of prices, its alot and I have been looking at what other options are out there but havent found anything even close to crashplan yet.

Great peace of mind for backing up your personal stuff.

Pros: I use the business plan for my personal stuff (photos, docs, etc.). I like that it's offsite and backs up automatically. I get a simple email telling me if the backup was successful or not. I recently had to use their customer support and their instructions were PERFECT. Easy to understand for the average joe. Not at all what I expected from an IT company. Kudos!

Cons: Getting it setup initially was harder than it should have been considering their tech support was so amazing. Maybe it was just me... I was setting up on a new computer.

Overall: Peace of mind that my important stuff gets backed up and I don't have to worry about doing it manually.

Pros: The offsite onsite model and general approach are great., if only it worked. Support try hard to help, but it's very time consuming.

Cons: Slow and unreliable. Bewildering UI. Update process incredibly complex.

Overall: We've been using the software for 5 years and had numerous problems including stalled clients, corrupt backup archives that the software verified as good until we tried to restore. Many bugs, requiring constant tweaking of servers and clients. In addition, the CrashPlan is very slow. It can take several days to scan a machine if it has lots of files.

Comments: My university has been using Code 42's CrashPlan for nearly 2 years now and the system just keeps getting better and better. The software is a fantastic tool that we put on every single staff and faculty machine to ensure data protections for the inevitable loss of data do to theft, hardware failure, or human error. Thanks to this software we are able to manage all of our user accounts though a cloud based console that give us the ability to make changes to machines that are being backed up as well as monitor the users to ensure consistent backups are being done. This give our IT department a since of security when it comes to data protection. We can restore data at a moments notice whenever needed thanks to this product. The only down side is that when using a cloud based server as opposed to a local server the restore process can take days for anything over 20GB. We had a user with 250GB that needed to be restored and the process took 7 days to get the data back. I understand the limitation when using the cloud based option but it would be nice if the restore speed could be increased a little. Aside from that one issue though the software performs at the level of security and coverage needed for an enterprise environment.

Pros: Security, Ease of use, Customer Champions,

Cons: Restore Speed can be a little lacking

Pros: CrashPlan will backup your entire server regardless of size for virtually nothing. I can't believe they can do it for such a nominal fee.

Cons: This seems like a stupid thing, but I really wish they would auto-send me my invoices each month. I have to reconcile my credit card statement and turn it in to our accountant who requires supporting documentation, and it is a bit of a hassle signing in to get the invoice when they could easily set it up to email me each month.

Pros: Easy to install & setup.

Cons: The cost is a bit higher than some of the other cloud backup services, but it's worth it.

Overall: I've been using Crashplan for the last 3 years. I purchased a family plan of 5 machines, so I'm able to backup my PCs as well as my wife's macbook, etc. I really like that I have the option to backup locally to another machine in my home, to someone else that I know that uses crashplan, as well as to the Crashplan Cloud. Several times, I've wanted a file from my home PC while at work so I just opened the Crashplan Application on my work PC, Change to my home PC, and restore the file I wanted. This saves me from having to have an FTP server running at home, possibly opening me up to security concerns.

I'm also a big fan of the Android App. Once or twice now I've wanted a file while away from home/work so I just restore it via the app to my phone. :)

Recommendations to other buyers: The one issue I occasionally run into, if you have multiple NIC cards, sometimes crashplan will switch to an inactive NIC and stop functioning.

Pros: They nail the endpoint backup thing! The new features they have added are great for certain uses cases, such as legal holds and insider threat monitoring.

Cons: Would love to get away from the need for an on-premises appliance while still keeping the security that we get with the appliance. Would save the inconvenience of constantly updating and patching to keep up with all the latest and greatest. Would also love to have a native app rather than a Java based app.

Pros: I loved this program, have been using it for over two years and I can't complain. It backs up your system entirely just in case.

Cons: Was very upset when they canceled their home plan. Backup should be simple to do. In one backup the system took 16gig of resources. Their backup schedule should be a simple setup. Backup files and then backup system image with files.

Overall: One of my favorite backup software, unfortunately, I might just have to shop around after they removed the family plan.

Comments: We had a backup solution in place for a number of years. We've finally decided that we needed a change. We spent time evaluating a number of different vendors. Eventually we decided on Code42 Crashplan. There support was great throughout the deployment and it is great with their continued support of their product.

Pros: Legal hold feature. Ability to lock down controls from administrator level and prevent users from not backing up. Ease of use for the client as well as the administrator console.

Cons: Night mode was removed from newer versions of the console.

Recommendations to other buyers: Definitely do your homework. Crashplan may cost a bit more money to competitors, but the reliability, support, and functionality is well worth it.

Pros: It runs automatically & keeps a copy on their server even if I remove it from my hard drive.

Overall: I'm a wedding photographer and wouldn't be able to do it without multiple backups. I love having Crashplan because it's a consistent, off-site backup that runs automatically, so I don't have to worry if it's not being backed up. I get an email daily about the status and if there ever is a problem, I know right away. I also really like that it keeps my backup even if I take something off of my hard drive, which isn't something all of these cloud services do.

Comments: We have been using CrashPlan for almost 3 years now and it continues to impress as an endpoint backup solution. The true beauty of it lies in its stealth, simplicity and reliability. The easiest way to get end users on board with new technology is with technology that is invisible to them. Some of our users ask periodically if the backup is even running because they don't see anything. This is music to the ears of IT professionals. For around $1/week per user, you can't beat the quality, reliability and the value of CrashPlan PROe. The latest versions (5.x) are rolling out many new capabilities that we are excited to take advantage The home version works just as well for your personal devices, too.

Pros: It does everything it claims to do, and it does it quickly, quietly and seamlessly. The administrative console is easy to use and navigate. After the environment is up and running, maintenance and administration is minimal.

Cons: There is an occasional delay in responses to online tickets, mostly due to time zone differences depending on who picks it up. Phone support is faster if you cannot wait.

Pros: Once installed on the computer or server you would like backed up you never have to touch it again really. I've now installed this on 6 different machines in our business that I wanted to be backed up offsite and it works seamlessly and effortlessly. It runs in the background and has tons of settings in which you can modify how you want the backup to occur. You can choose which files, how often, when, how much bandwidth to use, how much CPU to use, and does it with ease.

Cons: I can't really come up with much of a con really. I use this as a company expense so that makes the price easier to swallow but I can still see this being useful for a single user at home as well.

Comments: Because your data is very valuable, you need to take care of how you handle it. You want to secure your computer, with password and encryption, but you also want to make sure you won't lose anything. Your computer may be under warranty but if the hard drive break, you will lose all your data. You may receive a virus, delete a file by mistake, or overwrite the wrong version of a document. But, if you are not an IT pro, you don't have much options. Crashplan is so easy to use, that anyone can go on the website, purchase a subscription, and install the software, in minutes. If you manage your company, you can have a business account and manage your employee data, without any specific knowledge. Finding an online backup software is easy, but one that you can leverage from a single user to thousand of user, from personal to a large corporation, Crashplan is one of the best.

Pros: Schedule Versioning Remote Recovery End-User management Bandwidth Management Encryption Easy-of-User

Cons: If you have to pay 120$ per computer per year, you may look at alternative that gives other features. Sometimes, Dropbox is enough.

Comments: Implementation of CrashPlan was a no-brainer for us. With a population of mostly mobile systems, this ensures our data no matter what may happen to a physical system. In addition, it gives us peace of mind at the threat of cryptolockers- the threat is completely nullified by the ability to simply wipe a system and re-image.

Pros: -Easy to Deploy -Excellent Support -Lightweight and quiet- doesn't bother our end users and can be deployed silently.

Cons: -Back end management could use some work. -Can't search globally on cloud environments.

Comments: We've been using Crashplan PROe for 4 years now to backup anything and everything that we deem should be backed up on end user workstations and non-critical systems. Critical systems are backed up by a different system that pushes offsite, so Crashplan is our 'everything else' solution, and it is amazing for that.

Pros: Restores are incredibly simple and intuitive, they're almost fun to do. I LOVE when someone gets hit with ransomwhere (how sad is that?), and I put their files back with a click. Management is simple, it's almost a set-it-and-forget-it program. The few times we have had to reach out to support, they have been prompt in their responses and always give a full response with an explanation and resolution instructions.

Cons: I don't have much criticism here, other than maybe lower the per-license cost a little more so that I can pick up more user licenses in my existing budget.

This software was very easy to install, and I find it user friendly, it took me less than 10 minutes to be up and running.
One of my favorite things is that you can look back at any of your previous backups and select a file that was backed up and bring it back to your computer.
I use it both on my PC and MAC, it works great on both.
Also they have a very friendly customer service.

Comments: My unit uses CrashPlan for end user backups. There are several ways of setting it up. We use onsite management with cloud storage. The initial backup takes a while but it can be set to run in the background just like the incremental backups. We also have it set to take advantage of idle time and increase the resources used when they are not otherwise occupied. CrashPlan enables the user to do restores or they can be pushed from the administration console. It also does versioning of the backups which is especially useful when a user gets ransomware. Their customer service is amazing though we have had very little reason to contact them. They are also constantly trying to get in contact to ask what you think and what changes they can make.

Pros: Great software system that does what it advertised. Great company.

Cons: cloud is always dependent on bandwidth. I don't know what can be done about it but in some of our slower areas restores can take more than a day.

Pros: I chose to use this product as it is a great balance of value and functionality. I use it to backup my entire home desktop computer contents .

Cons: What I don't like is that the files are not stored in the cloud as the same directory format as they are on my computer. I would like to just be able to go there and download a single file if I needed to.

Overall: Automatic backup at a good value.

Pros: Easy to install and use in a hybrid setup, easy to deploy to users, unlimited storage (which is just awesome), customer support is good and they REALLY know their stuff!

Cons: The only real con we have experienced is that our admin staff don't always get notifications from the server about machines that haven't backed up in a bit. Other than that, it's been pretty great!

Comments: Prior to Crashplan, we had no unified way of backing up client PCs, and no way to tell when backups had run. Now we are able to offer our clients a simple and effective backup product, and we are able to see when PCs were backed up. We've also been able to restore hijacked files, and the process of upgrading hardware has been simplified with Crashplan's easy restore process.

Pros: It runs silently in the background, without bothering the user. The dashboard on the server offers a bird's eye view of all our clients, as well as reports when a device doesn't back up. Customer support has been exceptional on the few times when I've had a problem (always because of something I did, not the product's fault.)

Cons: There has been some user confusion on the right process for restoring/adopting PCs after replacement, but Crashplan's new version will streamline that.

Comments: We utilize Crashplan as ransomware insurance and a quick-and-dirty disaster recovery system. My organization has been hit by floods and hurricanes, and one of my offices is now in a tornado-prone area, so, better safe than sorry. Crashplan is simple, yet powerful, allowing me to ensure I have multiple backups of all of my important files in case something happens, and I've had to utilize it to restore from a ransomware infestation more than once. This system is a lifesaver!

Pros: Great pricing, simple interface, and fast restores. This platform has it all.

Cons: The software gets a little aggressive when first installed and starts automatically backing up the current user's profile. That's great if you're logged in as the end user, but not if you're logged in as yourself on someone else's PC to do the install. It's a quick adjustment in the Backup tab to get the right data though.

Comments: We purchased CrashPlan to replace our deployment of Retrospect for backing up our mobile fleet. Utilizing a VM in our infrastructure, we deployed the CrashPlan server in no time, and had our endpoints backing up to our private storage in no time. The added benefit of being able to customize the installer on our Mac computers, allowing us to deploy using Active Directory credentials and to utilize our JAMF Casper solution to deploy and manage was a huge plus. The CrashPlan agent runs silently in the background and does not take up a lot of compute cycles, so our users never know it is running. Backing up endpoints when they are away from the office makes CrashPlan the ultimate solution for us.

Pros: Easy install, strong filtering of files to prevent backup of non-critical files like MP3 files, and an easy to use GUI for the end users to pull their own restores.

Cons: I cannot think of anything off the top of my head.

Comments: I have personally been using CrashPlan for the past few years after testing the "share to friend's feature". I liked what I saw, did some research, and decided to jump. It was money worth spent especially for the peace of mind it brought for protecting my files, pictures, and music. Little did I know that not long after purchasing a personal subscription to CrashPlan, my employer decided to purchase PROe. As an IT technician, I was part of the initial rollout so that we could evaluate it for the rest of the organization. A couple of years later and we are still using it and rely on it to backup every computer assigned to a full-time employee. On multiple occasions, CrashPlan has been there to restore data during catastrophic issues. Hard drive failures, not a problem. CryptoLocker, no sweat. We even use it for new computer deployments and just have the end user download their backed up data and then adopt their former computer¿s backup. Everything just seems to work. Lastly, Code42 support has been great to us. They are quick to respond to questions or concerns. I cannot recommend CrashPlan highly enough.

Pros: Fast, reliable backups. Easy to restore in times of failures or upgrades

Cons: Backing up to or from network drives could be better. It only really works well when installed in a multi-user environment.

Comments: I have used Crash Plan for several years now. I started out with just the free version backing up to a friends computer. I found it super helpful to back up to the cloud and have access to all of my files from my phone, or any machine I logged into. I back up my parents computers to my own machine and the cloud as well. It is super easy to use and sits in the back ground without needing any special attention. I also like the backup reports I get in my email every week and special reports when a certain machine hasn't been able to back up in a while.

Pros: Easy to use. Allows me to back up to any location for free. Has a cloud backup solution that is excellent. I have saved my three terabyte hard drive twice in the last 2 years. Unlimited cloud storage when paid for.

Cons: It is sometimes a resource hog. The interface feels a bit clunky and out of date.

Comments: Code42 is the best cloud-based endpoint backup program that we found while researching a new backup system. As many other users states, it just works! Extremely easy to restore files for users that accidentally delete something or have get locked out due to ransomware. It's also great to use when a user switches to a new computer.

Pros: Worry free file backup, easy to deploy, runs silently in the background.

Cons: The public cloud version lags a little behind compared to the new product updates for the on-premise solution.

Recommendations to other buyers: Highly recommend starting with a free trial, then you'll be hooked!

Pros: This is a great software that runs in the background like most back-up/recovery/encryption services out there. It allows me to work through our network or even with files on my own harddrive without having to worry about losing everything or having risk of serious security events like Ransomware attacks.

Cons: For the most part, my cons with CrashPlan are minimal and insignificant. File searches are useful but I wish they were quicker (but of course patience isn't in great supply when you're looking urgently for a necessary file). The security dashboard/overview is also a bit elementary in display.

Overall: Peace of mind that my work product and environment are safe and secure.

Comments: We have used this service for over a year. It has saved us alot of headache and stress for when we have needed to retrieve our employee's records from a laptop possibly crashing, being stolen or from user error. This software is a one stop shop for all of your back up needs.

Pros: The simplicity of using the software is amazing. The customer support is there 100%. They are constantly looking to improve their product from those of us who utilize the software. Not many companies out there that actually listen to the end user. Code 42 does.

Cons: Truthfully some look at the pricing as an issue. For the quality service they offer it is well worth the price and then some. Knowing that important data has been backed up and not losing it is priceless.

Pros: - Not only is it very easy to recover a file, but I can select what time to recover it from, in about 7 minute increments. This is fantastic when something goes wrong with a file; you can get the one from yesterday, or the one from a few minutes ago.
- It was very easy to select what files I wanted backed up, and I know my files are safe and can be recovered from anywhere.
- The initial backup took a reasonable amount of time.
- Restoring files is instant.
- I'm not limited on storage space.

Cons: It doesn't do everything. There is no bare-metal restore, so I will need another program for that. I did not find any problems or issues with this software.

Overall: Peace of mind knowing my files are safe. My business depends on these files, so this is very important.

Comments: This product works great. Back ups occur without VPN dependency, and after the initial back up set, are completely unnoticed. The settings are fairly granular, and the Customer Champions are super helpful with any questions on set up, or maintenance. Code42 is very committed to it's customers, and actively seeks input on issues with it's current versions, as well as suggestions for upcoming releases. The variety of backup storage options, should suit any situation.

Pros: I can't say enough about how good the customer service is for this product! The free server application, and unlimited cloud storage work great for our organization

Cons: Setting bandwidth caps to the organization, rather than the users would be helpful, but it's a pretty minor issue.

Comments: Good backups are good security! Code42's CrashPlan arrived on the scene for our company just days after ransomware "ate" the desktop of one of our administrative assistants at a remote location. We weren't able to save that desktop data, but we wanted it to be the last time an admin loses so much work in a single incident. Since then, we have quietly rolled out CrashPlan to our top tier admins who support our Leadership and Executive teams to great effect. We feel the IT department should be either invisible or making lives easier, and CrashPlan allows us to do both! We promoted it as a productivity tool, allowing tech support to have some of our busiest users back up and running in mere minutes after an incident, rather than hours or days.

Pros: CrashPlan is easy to deploy, and easy to set up. It provides a fantastic sense of reassurance to some of our most sensitively-placed users with a nearly invisible roll out. We want everyone to save their work to the shared drives - but if they don't, CrashPlan is there to save the day.

Cons: On the back end, we had some issues getting invitations pushed out to users, and we found it was easier to use our own deployment tool. We also had an issue with password resets on the dashboard for our admins, but we resolved that by having it use LDAP to authenticate.

Comments: We have used Crashplan for about 1.5 years now using an on-premise appliances supplied by code42. Our previous solution was Connected Backup which the backup portion would work fine. We started running into issues on restores of compressed files (.pst and .zip) mostly. Since we have implemented crashplan we backup around 6500 devices and average about 1.7TB of data restores per month. Additionally 96% of these restores are all self-service.

Pros: 1) fast roll out. We rolled out 2800 users in about 3 weeks time without issue. 2) ease of setup and expandable. 3) tie into AD. 4)continuous backup 5)Customer Champions are awesome

Cons: 1) Reporting out of the box lacks. But the Ties to the API using Splunk is a good substitute.

Comments: We have been using Crashplan now for 3+ years. It has taken very little time to maintain and it just works. We have about 80 accounts on it backing up close to 160 devices. We also use it to back up our file servers. We still back up to tape, but it is a lot quicker to restore a lost or deleted file from within Crashplan than it is off the backup. We typically use it on all our Mac and PC laptops and the users don't even know it is in the background working. Great tool.

Pros: Very easy to set up. You can set it up and almost literally forget that it is there. It odes what it says it does and it does it very well.

Cons: I wish they would find a way to have this Crashplan as an app that would back up your iPhone or Android device.

Comments: I have been using Crashplan for over three years. I really like having the ability to go back to a specific date and time and restore an old copy of a file or entire project. Crashplan Is able to do this with deduplication so the archive size doesn¿t grow exponentially. It is ridiculously fast and easy to restore files. If you are still using tape backups, you have no idea what you are missing. Backing up to multiple destinations is also a key feature. Every time I restore files, I am amazed at how quick and easy it is.

Pros: Once this is configured correctly, it works very well.

Cons: If you do encounter a problem, you will more than likely need to contact support to help you solve the problem. Thankfully, they have support.

Pros: Very minimal amount of time allocated to managing the console. Users can self support by doing restores themselves. The mobile App. This adds so much value. There are many use cases for this that we haven't even thought of yet. Makes easy work of migrating to new hardware.

Cons: Large installations can get pricey. Phone technical support can get busy and require a call back.

Pros: I have been using CrashPlan for a few years and feel "protected" knowing that the application is always running and backing up my files. Perhaps, most beneficial is that you can setup email notifications if your computer hasn't been backed up in "x" days. This is amazing useful. While there are many software platforms that do backups, few alert you when they haven't done one in "x" days. As a result, you are blindly thinking everything is working when it may not.

Cons: I find the restore speeds to be a little slow. It isn't an internet connection issue (tried on fibre and other internet connections). It seems to be more related to how they store the backups and extract the data.

Pros: -Unlimited cloud storage -File versioning -Lightweight -Easy to administer with a centralized management console. -End users can restore a file without contacting IT. I have not had to help someone with a restore on their laptop for months, maybe over a year.

Pros: CrashPlan is easy to install and use. I've had it for a little over a year, and it has dependably backed up all data from my multiple computers and hard drives. With the dashboard view, it's easy to see the status of all devices' data back-ups and to securely access data from any device if needed.

Cons: The initial data back-up for each device is fairly time-consuming. It might be better if the sleep, user-is-away, and other settings were auto-adjusted for the initial back-up to expedite it.

Pros: The best part has to be the ease of use from the user end. In higher education, we often deal with people that are used to doing the same thing in the same way over and over, but Crash plan was easy to adopt and integrate with our existing systems.

Cons: Some of our existing users had personal crash plan accounts before our institution wide rollouts. In a perfect world, we would have been able to merge these accounts with their new institution accounts.

Everyone was very knowledgeable and nothing was hidden from my view. The software instillation and configuration was easy as expected. Speed and CPU overhead are great. Restores are simple and user serviceable. This has already saved us multiple times in the cases of users deleting files off of their desktops! The dashboard gives us a great overview of what is happening with the software, as well as easy user/PC/Mac maintenance.

Pros: Ease of setup, maintenance, user self restores, AD integration.

Cons: From time to time, the off prem hosted data store goes offline, only a few seconds at a time.

Comments: it just works. Solid support when you need it, and no issues with getting the files when you need them. I've used crashplan for over two years and noce once has it failed me.

Pros: Cryptowall and other ransomware are nothing to this. It's affordable, and it always works.

Cons: Some work could be done on some error codes. A few acague ones I have to call support on.

Recommendations to other buyers: If peace of mind is worth the money go for it.

Pros: It's fast at backing up my data and it's able to retain my files even if I removed them from my HDD (even on purpose). It's can also backup my external HDD whenever I attach it.

Cons: The backup process can slow down my system, so I had to designate certain hours as backup periods. I usually do this over the weekend so during the week I get e-mail messages that my computer's not been backed up. In this case the messages are useless - they could factor in the designated backup times.

Overall: I can sleep safely knowing that I can easily restore my data at any time.

Comments: I've been using CrashPlan on about 45 endpoints for the last year or so. It has been very reliable and does exactly what it says it does: backs up your files. I rarely have any issues with their software or the backup process.

Pros: Ease of setup. Scheduled backup reports. Simple licensing model.

Cons: The only real issue I have is that restores have to happen over the internet -- there is no option to have a hard drive shipped to your location. I am using the MSP platform with CrashPlan PROe.

Comments: I've been using Crashplan - both the home and Enterprise versions - for a couple of years. It just works. Backups are painless, restores are quick and they have quite possible the best support I've ever encountered. Updates are smooth and we've never had a problem with them.

Pros: Fantastic support. In over 30 years in IT they have possibly the best support I've seen. Everyone is friendly and VERY knowledgeable.

Cons: You actually have to buy the product. If it was free...

Comments: CrashPlan form Code42 is a great tool for endpoint backups and recovery. we are a manufacturing company operating 12 locations world wide. We have this software in place on over 100 computers. We have it deployed in 4 countries, primarily to mobile users. Previously we had issued external hard drives to users to complete backups either in office or at home. We found most of the users were carrying the drives with them and if the laptop was stolen so was the drive.

Pros: Quick backups every 15 minutes with the ability to configure backup frequency. Backups are completed to data centers around the world based on geographic location. light weight clients that are automatic so there is no user interaction for backup to complete. Easy to understand restore function that allows users to restore their own files. Central control function on our in house server and in house retention of encryption keys. Great customer support with amazing setup assistance.

Cons: None that we have found yet.

Comments: I have been using CrashPlan for the past 18 months and it has been nothing short of great. It has helped out users both in catastrophic events as well as scheduled PC upgrades. It was fairly straight forward to set up, spend about an hour with an Code42 engineer getting it set up and haven't had to make a change besides regular software upgrades.

Pros: Easy to use, set and forget with clients

Cons: My only gripe is that archive maintenance does use client resources for a short bit of time.
