October 31, 2018 5.0 We needed a user friendly enrollment platform that also brought value to our clients. The on boarding system, notification, COBRA etc. are all excellent features that bring ease to our small to medium clients. No more paper! This has been a fabulous addition to our agency and our clients. This time of year things are busy for us all, but the team works hard for us. Pros Very user friendly from an admin and employee perspective. Customization is easy as well. Pros Basic enrollments (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, STD, LTD) and normal contributions, it's really easy to build and use. Cons Anything that needs to be slightly customized it doesn't have the capability. ie: A group I had contributes a flat amount for Medical, Dental, Vision and EE Group Life. The group does not contribute to dependent group life, vol std, vol ltd, fsa or hsa. It is unusual set up, but I had to find different work arounds, non of which were "easy" and slightly confusing for both the employer and employees The other thing is that updates given to the plan, do not automatically update on the subgroup level. It captures the data and eliminates lengthy forms from having to be filled out manually and then transmitted. Pros I like the connection that the BerniePortal makes with new hires even before they join the organization. The ability to onboard and get the HR paperwork out of the way is a great asset for our organization. Cons There are a lot of changes made to the portal and these changes are rolled out quickly and sometimes this causes errors with capturing information and submitting it to third party vendors. I would recommend it to other small business looking to offer a great experience for their employees. Pros It makes medical benefits administration easy and straightforward. I would like a better platform that is easier to work with. Pros A solution for employees to sign benefits forms electronically, reducing the need for printing forms and distributing as well as tracking if employees returned them. Can easily send out reminders for those that haven't signed forms. Cons Reporting is difficult and its not easy to navigate to find employee paperwork and download documents. Pros I liked the idea that it was supposed to tell employees their per pay period costs, and allow them to modify their choices Cons That it didn't work correctly. It wasn't allowing us to change the Voluntary Life (slider bar). And I have employees who's calculations were incorrect vs what we were billed from the carrier. It's not easy to go back and ask for more money after the fact. BerniePortal's team configures the system using information submitted to them. If this information is incorrect, it is likely that the information submitted was incorrect. I recommend working with your broker to review your teams' information. This discrepancy between the carrier bill unfortunately happens frequently because the information is being moved between systems. In order to reslove this, I recommend asking your broker about working with carriers offering BernieBill, BerniePortal's native billing solution. Using BernieBill, carriers can issue bills directly through BerniePortal so that the information they use to calculate bills pulls the data entered into BerniePortal. Employers in all industries and size can benefit from a program like Bernie Cons Rarely do we find an issue with the program. The reports are nice that it can pull and send to you. Pros What I like about this software is that there is ease when onboarding new employees and then the employees also have it pretty easy when selecting the benefits that they wants. Nice that is makes it a step by step process but it is self explanatory. Cons It is sometime a little more complicated to get into the masquerading option from the admin login, sometimes things don't always work correctly but it always works eventually. Pros It helped move our benefit selection to an online process Cons It won't let me pull reports properly - it keeps telling me I already downloaded the report and I cant get it again even with different parameters. My groups like the portal, it is easy to use, and it helps me get new business and retain what i already have. I am a big fan! Pros I like the fact that Bernie Portal is so focused on the broker. The fact that they build each website for me and update each year on renewal makes Bernie Portal such a great partner for my agency. Cons Every now and then i run into something that a group may want to do that Bernie Portal just can't accommodate. Usually however, many of these small issues at some point in time get resolved as Bernie continues to innovate and upgrade their portal. Review Source TP Thomas P. Our new rep,has been nothing but extraordinary to work with. He never takes long to answer, and treats each one of our clients with a sense of urgency, just like we do. We have had our struggles depending on the complexity of the group, but overall we are satisfied with Bernie Portal's software Pros We love the interface of Bernie Portal and how easy it is for our company and our clients to use. Additionally, the fact that Bernie Portal "builds" and implements our group clients takes that large burden off of us to focus more on sales. Cons There are a lot of functions Bernie Portal does not offer at all, or other systems offer better. Bernie Portal does not allow different hour eligibility requirements. They do not have a measurement period feature. Recently, Bernie Portal also increased prices for "add on features" so much that we are having difficulty passing this cost onto our clients. Previously the rates were reasonable, now the add on features are extremely expensive. Review Source TS Tonya S. Pros I like the ease of moving around in the system. Cons 1\. We need to be able to ask a question once (example: are you married?) and not repeat the question for every benefit because it is on the enrollment form. 2. More explanation is needed on the dependents screen as to why the dependent information is needed. it is currently blank and doesn't give direction. 3. The inability to manipulate an employee's per pay check deduction based on a state based subsidy program that can change the amount quarterly. 4. Not listing the carrier name on the benefit. 5. But we are offering 15. Yes, 15. We could not do that without the Bernie Portal. But being a small firm you tend to know more about your co-workers than most offices would. You know that some would like a traditional plan that pays for everything while another co-worker couldn't afford such a Cadillac plan. You know that some are young and want an HSA while others are healthy and do not need all the bells and whistles. With co-pays and out of pockets, specialist vs. general physicians, monthly prescriptions vs. occasional antibiotics it has become almost impossible for a one plan fits all anymore. Hence our 15 and like I said . . . .could only be accomplished with the Bernie Portal. Pros We offer several plan options and with the Bernie Portal it allows the employees the opportunity to review, decide and choose which plan works best for them. With health plans becoming more and more the responsibility of the consumer this gives them their first step in making that happen. And in reviewing their own plans they have more insight into what their chosen covers and does not cover. The other wonderful thing is a more simplistic way to review your summary of benefits and certificate of coverage. The documents are online and always available. Cons The only thing I found sort of challenging is sometimes you do have to hunt and peck a little to find admin documents you might need. But once you understand how the system works then it gets much easier. Review Source Marilyn M. I knew exactly when and if employees had signed up for benefits and also if they had submitted their waiver if they weren't taking the benefits. I've been able to readily sign up new employees as well. Pros All the plan data is there for me to download to make comparisons to payroll data being withheld. Cons I wish I could've uploaded the info to my payroll company (Paychex) Review Source PO Patricia O. Cons Lots of things are missing, and my biggest feature improvement recommendation would be in the onboarding. It doesn't allow candidates to save and return at a later time. Also, candidates cannot sign on to actual documents; they have to download the attachment to read the documents. I could go on about how minimalistic this software is. The benefits enrollment is great, and the onboarding tools are a huge bonus. What a difference from collecting paper applications from all employees! Pros As a broker, ease of use for my clients is critical. Online enrollment is the future in benefits, and getting on board with a system that does it right was essential. BerniePortal delivers! Cons The only thing I would add is a short benefit summary on the Election screens for each plan. As it is set up now, the employee has to click on a PDF to view the benefit summary. It is still far better than paper, but a short summary on the screen would be helpful.
