However, the way contacts are counted across separate lists made my costs higher than expected. I would strongly recommend using one main list with segmentation instead of creating overlapping lists, but I also think EmailOctopus should explain this pricing impact more clearly. It is a good platform, but billing transparency around duplicated subscribers across lists needs improvement. Pros EmailOctopus is still very easy to use. I like the clean interface, good templates, drag-and-drop editor, and how quickly I can create and send campaigns. Overall, it remains a practical and user-friendly platform for email marketing with good pricing. Cons My main issue is how subscriber billing works across multiple lists. I had one main list with 4,000+ subscribers, and I created another list from part of that audience with around 1,000+ subscribers. Even though I only used that second list once, the subscribers were counted again toward my total, so I ended up paying for more than 5,000 subscribers. This increased my monthly cost from about $28 to $34. I think this should be made much clearer inside the platform, with a stronger warning before users create overlapping lists. From upload to send in 20 minutes. It's that easy, and deliverability was great. The interface is very intuitive, and though I haven't used it, help was available for the asking at every step. Pros Simple and easy to set up, we use Email Octopus to parse new email subs from multiple lists and give them an automation sequence. It took less than 5 minutes to upload a list, and another 10 to set up a multi-touchpoint email automation. Super affordable, and easy to scale too. Cons The intial 2500 sub limit was considered a detraction for us when we first started, since a lot of our lead gen magnets attract a lot of subs who only want the freebie. In that experience, I had never encountered this level of operational intrusion. After onboarding, importing my list, and preparing campaigns, my campaign was placed on hold for manual review. EmailOctopus later confirmed that my campaign did not violate any compliance rule. Despite this, they manually opened and reviewed my private campaign content and initiated an extended investigation into my internal business processes, lead acquisition methods, and data structure. They questioned: Why some contacts did not have “first names” (even though my form only collects a single name field) Why B2B contacts used role-based emails (info@, hello@, etc.) How my internal workflows operate How leads are processed internally All contacts were first-party, permission-based, and obtained through legitimate business channels. No purchased or scraped data was used. Instead of relying on standard industry indicators (complaints, bounce rates, engagement, unsubscribe rates), the platform relied on subjective manual reviews and repeated documentation requests. This created delays, uncertainty, and business risk. At some point, continuing would have required disclosing sensitive internal company processes just to send lawful campaigns. Recommendation EmailOctopus may be suitable for hobby projects or very small personal lists. For professional, B2B, or client-facing email marketing, I cannot recommend it due to unpredictable compliance enforcement and excessive operational interference. As an ESP, we're obligated to ensure mail sent through our platform meets legal requirements. In this case, our system flagged the campaign and a manual review followed. We identified patterns in the contact list — including a high volume of role-based addresses, which commonly appear in purchased lists — that didn't align with the collection method described. We asked some routine questions to understand the gap. Reviewing campaign content and asking new senders about list acquisition is standard practice across the email industry. It's essential for maintaining strong relationships with inbox providers and protecting deliverability for all our customers. It would be useful to be able to organise contacts who haven't necessarily subscribed to a mailing list (e.g they've just signed up to receive emails about a particular event). It isn't super obvious how best to set this up, at least to me. However, the customer service provided has been exceptional. Pros Have been using EmailOctopus for over a year now because of price hikes with a competitor. The customer service is superb, the software is easy to use and the email designs are professional. Now use this service for our email and campaign marketing. Cons I have no complaints at this time. Possibly more design variation and ability to use my brand fonts, but honestly I am happy with service.
