### "Stay away from Updox "

November 14, 2025

1.0

Stay away from Updox. It's not worth the money. They raised their prices from $799 to $2400 in 3 years.

Pros

Not too much. They had a small page limit on faxing. We experienced daily fax fails. Staff reported a lack of support when the product was down.

Cons

The product was frequently inoperable. Their contract is unreasonable. They have a very small window for termination and if you are late by 18 days, they will hold you to 1 year of payments.

### "Meh, better products out there."

May 21, 2025

1.0

Honestly, for the most part, it has been ok....until it is not. Then they are not at all helpful with fixes or responsiveness. Now, send them an email that you want to cancel your service and they are all over that.

Pros

When it works, it works well enough, problem is that is not often enough and getting customer service response is tough.

Cons

1\. Customer service....you cannot call and get a human to help with an issue right away, you have to try to get on a schedule for a zoom meeting and if you are tied up with real office work/issues during that time, you have to start the process over, meaning you have items that need to be placed in patient charts that won't work just hanging out in the inbox. 2. CONTRACTS automatically renew without an "out" and they do not allow you to buy out your contract. We are paying about $600/month for a service we do not want any longer and they are making us pay 7 more months for the pleasure of doing business. Very frustrating. 3. Price sold at the beginning of our business with them was great, but when they increased, it went up 500%. 4. When they have an outage (which seems to happen with regularity), it literally cripples our office.

### "Integrates with Practice Fusion, but do your research and know what you are getting into."

May 24, 2023

2.0

Overall I would not recommend unless you use Practice Fusion (since there are no other options). I feel there are many better options out there if your EMR integrates with them. Once you sign with them you are locked into a 1 year contract (for all agreed upon features) so be sure to do your research and proceed carefully.

Pros

The customizable patient forms are great and overall the system is easy to use. The customizable automatic patient appointment reminders are great for us and being able to track the specific date and time they were sent is a huge bonus. The main reason we went with them is due to them being the only program currently that integrates with Practice Fusion.

Cons

Their broadcast feature is not HIPAA compliant since you can not control specifically who it is sent to ( just broad groups) and is limited to very few characters. The HIPAA secure text is ridiculous where you can not use page breaks so everything bunches together into a giant paragraph and we are frequently getting spam messages through the numbers they use for it. The Video chat feature frequently disconnects or buffers during patient video visits. Customer service has been unhelpful many times. Sometimes our patients do not receive their appointment reminders. I have been told by support that this is due to there being a "system outage" during the period of time that the appointment was entered into the calendar (but did not receive any outage alert from them regarding it). The cost of all of the features send up being very expensive.

Reason for choosing Updox

It is currently the only product that integrates with Practice Fusion.

### "Waste time and money, poor customer service , too many issues in 4 days"

September 2, 2022

1.0

Horrible experience! The care and the concern were not there. I was sinking, no one seemed to care. I do not want anyone else to go through that. If you had great experiences with Updox, good for you. I am speaking the truth of what I have experienced. When I asked for help or cancel, one of their customer services said, well you need to give 30 days notice. Seriously? I was on day 4 and it was Not working properly, I sent several messages, asking for help....They can keep the $94.00. I am hoping they have a better system in place to serve their clients. Use Doxyme and Amazon as their business model. That might help.

Pros

The video quality is great. That's all I enjoyed for the 4 days that costs me $94.00. I did not sign up to quit, but I spent 4 days with too many obstacles with no help, so I decided to go with Doxyme, and it was a well-overdue change. Why would I paid that money and quit? I am currently using Practice Fusion, so it was convenient, so I did not want to leave.

Cons

The system was not working properly, my calls have constantly dropped. I checked my internet speeds, everything was fine. My iMac computer has no issues. it's only 6 months old. I contacted their customer's service since I had so many patients scheduled and it was Not a weekend before they blame it on the weekends. They got back to me the next day, took notes and said they will escalate. I was like a ball. They sent me several emails with no resolutions. My experience with them, was a 4 days nightmare! No refunds although I only used their trash for 4 days and I reported the issue with no resolutions. I am not here to crash any businesses since I own several businesses myself. I am here to share my experience with others. I am currently using Doxyme, and I have no issues with them. Doxyme is very receptive, and acts fast to questions. Doxyme has a help desk available and I only pay $35.00 monthly for my plan. Doxyme's video qualities are much better although Updox video qualities are great as well. I can get patient's files during the calls etc. I feel at ease with Doxyme because I know if I need help, they will be there for me. Updox needs to change their business model. They are not worth $94.00. Their customer's service is poor. They don't seem to care. What does that mean? Collected information to escalate while I have 20 patients to see? Does that sound something you will want to be a part of? Walk in my shoes, don't send me endless emails. Never again!

### "Customer service problems"

December 11, 2020

1.0

Excellent until this July, and terrible after that. This summer when they changed their business model they became a totally different company doing a totally different product. With no warning, they were "telamedicine" and not a secure fax catchment system. Probably they were taken over by someone who had vicious business habits.

Pros

In its previous rendition UpDox was very good and easy to use.

Cons

They changed their business model and become a more expensive rendition (four times as expensive) without warning and without giving the users a chance to move out. Their customer service did not respond. When I finally talked to a person (after calling sales, because no one else answers) they claimed they had tried to call and email the clinic many times. They did not because they had my personal cell phone that keeps records, and my personal email that does the same. They were lying. Then the representative said I was "borderline racist" because I objected to the fact that their "chat" option, the only one they previously allowed me to use was actually people from another country who had no power to do any actions at all. Then when I finally got a person on the line to cancel, after three months of calling, and three months of charging me four times the amount we had contracted for, they would not refund my money because supposedly they "had been available to use and had tried to contact me." Lying. The new business model. I am contacting my bank to let them know not to accept any more withdrawals from this company.

Reason for choosing Updox

Originally Updox did good and secure fax catchment. They were affordable and useful to a small practice. I am now using FaxPlus. Based in Swizerland which has laws that make changes like what Updox did to my practice harder to implement without getting my signature. I recommend them.

Response from Updox

December 16, 2020

Dr. Holland We're sorry you've had a difficult recent relationship with Updox. One clarification: Our "chat" option is staffed entirely by our own employees who work out of our Ohio office. We're proud of our diverse workforce that includes staff from different backgrounds, all of whom are empowered to provide exceptional service to our customers. While our business model has not changed (nor has our ownership), COVID obviously had a huge impact across healthcare and our telehealth solution (which we actually launched in 2019) became vital to many providers. Thank you for your previous partnership.

Pros

I am able to work from anywhere and complete my job. I can communicate with patients any time of day. Messaging is one of my absolute favorite features in Updox!

Cons

### "Poor customer support is inexcusable in Health Care"

February 17, 2022

1.0

They make it very difficult to get real time customer service disrupting patient care I am fed up with this program. Often end up using the free apps from Doximity for physicians which always works well this paid program fails. If we weren’t stuck with PracticeFusion we would never have signed up with a company that it is

Pros

Integration with PRACTICE FUSION we were not given a choice since they have already made the deal with each other

### "Updox"

May 19, 2020

4.0

Only wish that we could have our office phone number identified when texts and calls go to the patients.

Pros

Allows rapid secure text messaging from my computer to patients. Ease to set up and learn. Allows easy fax retrieval and sorting. Not wasting paper for unwanted faxes. Charges are not per document or usage per client. Patients with appointments are easily reminded and asked to confirm the date. Cuts down on staff having to call each patient for a reminder (and the patients rarely answer our reminder call). They pay attention to their texts.

Cons

Patients cannot identify incoming texts due to random phone number generation by Updox. Patients are wary about opening the text since they do not recognize the phone number. Cannot upload PDF's forms for completion for the patients. They need to be recreated in the Updox platform first. We want to use our forms that we already have, not reformat and retype it in Updox.

### "Good add-on to Practice Fusion. "

June 5, 2024

4.0

Pretty good value as an ad-on to Practice Fusion. The two systems offer some of the best value when it comes to medical software for a practice.

Pros

The integration with Practice Fusion is pretty good. The Updox module allows a queue for TXT messages and faxes, which then can be worked on. It's a good communication tool for scheduling, interacting with patients efficiently and quickly.

Cons

There is still some work involved as far as working the queue but there is no magic wand that can do this automatically.

### "Chronic Issues "

January 8, 2020

3.0

Many errors. Chronic issues. We often have to contact support. I believe that the system is slow and outdated. Has some great features, but is so slow, when doing anything. We purchased because this product is recommended by our EHR, but the compatibility isn’t impressive.

Pros

The ease of the software is easy, as long as it is functioning. We love the reminder dashboard, we however sometimes wait for hours to send or receive electronic faxes.

Cons

We have chronic errors, and delays in the importing of documents from Updox into our actual EMR. It is supposed to work with our existing ehr, however we have major delays when importing urgent reports into patient charts

Reason for choosing Updox

Was specifically developed to work with our existing emr. Attended demo at healthcare seminar

### "Amazingly Easy to Use"

May 26, 2020

5.0

Pros

The software in incredibly easy to use. I can send faxes from my medical records software to other facilities, and I can receive information and input it directly to patient files as well. This has saved me so much time, and makes running the accounts receivable portion of our business MUCH easier. The tools available cover all facets of thing I need, (highlight, redact, digital signatures, etc.) and I only needed to be shown the tools once to understand how to use them.

Cons

Sometimes it takes a little while for something I've "printed" to show up in the inbox, but that would be the case for a normal printer anyway. A quick "refresh" of the page gets it sorted, but speeding this process would be my only request!

Switched from

[eFax](https://www.capterra.com/p/174254/eFax/)

Efax is a separate service, while Updox is incorporated with our medical software (Macpractice) This means I can use ONE program for all my needs, as opposed to logging in to a website where I have to download files from my medical software and then upload to the internet based software. Additionally, we were constantly running into "overage" charges and couldn't work with their billing department in a way that made sense for our business.

### "Excellent functionality"

May 19, 2020

5.0

Micropractice ease to reduce the paper load. Love the user ability to write on forms, sign and date forms without ever needing to print and then re upload .

Pros

I am a nurse practitioner with a micro functional medicine practice, always looking to be as paperless as possible. I love Updox for several reasons. One is that when labs come in, I have many tools to use to sign off on the labs, highlight abnormals, write notes on the lab itself and then easily download the results. Currently Updoz does not interface with my EHR but hopefully in the future for ease of moving it straight into the patients chart. I also love that I can drop a blank word document into the main portal and create a new document right there with ease and then fax out. This makes writing medical necessity letters for patients easy, new lab orders, things that require my signature.

Cons

I wish they would integrate with Power 2 Practice, my EHR. Recently, Updox fixed a feature which has been so helpful. I can now easily resend a fax from where it originated, after writing on it or signing it. That hadn't been a user friendly function before now so thank you!

### "Effective and User Friendly"

May 15, 2020

4.0

Like I mentioned, the medical office that I support that uses Updox is not very tech savvy -- and yet they have had fewer problems with Updox than with any other software that they use regularly. When I have needed to install Updox "printers" I was able to find clear instructions online for basic installation, as well as information for the specific issue I was dealing with at the time. When I have needed to contact Updox for technical support the wait was brief and they were able to get me the pertinent information very quickly so that the issue could be resolved.

Pros

I have supported a medical office with 4 providers for over a decade, providing computer and technical support. The medical office has been using Updox for about 6 years. I have been impressed with how user-friendly the product is. Most of the people in this office struggle to update Java every three months (which is a required part of the electronic medical record software.) However, they have been able to install Updox with minimal support from me. The office does occasionally contact Updox's technical support, and they are able to successfully help them the majority of the time. (If Updox's tech support can't solve the problem, then I will get called.)

Cons

Each user has his/her own username and password input into the emulated printer installation, and sometimes the staff ends up inadvertently using someone else's credentials. It doesn't see to affect the running of the software in any significant way (staff has reported no problems from this,) but it is something that I've noticed over the years.

### "Needed to Find Patient Texting Program Quickly "

January 29, 2024

2.0

Poor interaction with consumer support without empathy or compassion.

Pros

It works as text but doesn't follow individual conversations well. Does not easily transfer text to my chart.

Cons

I found UpDox and wanted to try it. It was not as useful as it appeared, but I was forced to sign a 1 year contract. I notified UpDox that I will not be using it - there response was - you signed a one year contract. As a very small solo-provider telehealth practice - this was an expense that I had not counted on and it is very expensive - Especially for something I will not be using. But UpDox was rigid.

Reason for choosing Updox

To explore its features. Decided not to use it but stuff with contract.

### "Dated but functional fax replacement"

Fair. It does what was promised. It rarely goes down completely but lately has been very slow

Pros

Tight integration with our EMR for fast uploads to charts.

Cons

It’s 2024 and all faxes are converted to PDF. Why isn’t the text searchable? Why can’t we build rules to forward specific senders or cover sheets to specific queues. Feel like Updox is often sluggish or slow for no reason.

### "Great streamlined service"

November 18, 2021

5.0

This software has made my day-to-day life so much easier and efficient. Being able to fax a load of documents with a couple of clicks makes all the difference. No paper mess.

Pros

What I like most is the ability to send all the documents that I need to fax for the day over to this software, while Updox keeps it organized and in order, easy to view and classify and send with just a couple of clicks. This software also makes it easy to double-check your work and not deal with all the paper mess. The integration to our medical software was easy and simple and troubleshooting anything with the company is always accessible.

Cons

The only feature I dislike is the contacts system. Making a new contact or cleaning up your contact list should be simpler than it is now.

Reason for choosing Updox

For its simplicity and ability to integrate with other software.

Poor printer drivers make it unreliable and time consuming.

Pros

Cons

I rarely leave a bad review. THeir customer service hasn't replied to me in over a week now, I called and no call back. Their instructions to install printers don't even have windows 10 in many of them. The printer drivers don't consistently stay connected. Faxes are often shown with lines making them hard to read.
