About Timing

Have you ever spent all day in front of your Mac, just to wonder where the heck all that time went? You could use a time tracker. But to be honest, time tracking sucks. You have to start and stop timers and enter what you did. And if you forget that, you are back to square one. Timing, on the other hand, automatically tracks how you spend your time. It logs which apps you use, which websites you visit, and which documents you edit. You can also export that data to create invoices.

Timing Features

  • Automatic Time Capture
  • Billable & Non-Billable Hours
  • Billing & Invoicing
  • Employee Database
  • Mobile Time Tracking
  • Multiple Billing Rates
  • Offline Time Tracking
  • Overtime Calculation
  • Timesheet Management
  • Vacation/Leave Tracking

Pros: This software has helped me tremendously in keeping accurate track of the time I spend doing work post processing photos. Previously I kept track of my time manually (writing it down), and I'd often forget to note my start and end times, plus breaks that I took, so I was often guessing at how much I actually spent. With Timing, I don't have to think of it until invoicing time, when I simply review the time I spent on different projects- it lists the time I spent on each project, and gives various ways of reviewing the info (per application, a timeline of the day, specified project or "task", etc). I also really like the search tool- if a project ended up in the wrong category somehow, I can simply search activities according to a keyword to find and filter the results.

Cons: I wish you could zoom in to the Timeline. I wish I'd get an alert when doing a new task that I haven't assigned a label to, so I could organize it correctly right away. I'll often do work in Photoshop in various "Untitled" document's (i.e. while working on unsaved image stacks), and then all of that work ends up in the Unassigned folder and sometimes it is hard to figure out which project it belonged to, so I wish Timing could see the names of my layers within Photoshop and thereby be able to place this work in my assigned work folders.

Overall: Overall, this software has revolutionized my time-tracking on my Mac,making it more accurate and simple. I also have really appreciated the tech support and frequent app updates!

Hi, thank you for the comprehensive review! Just a small tip for the timeline: you can zoom it by pinching your fingers on it, or by keeping the CMD key pressed while scrolling on it. Hope this helps a little bit :-)

Pros: After an initial setup period, where you define rules for automatic classification of app usage, using this app is remarkably easy.

Time spent on all apps is accounted for, and you can easily visualize the results in beautiful reports. Many stats are supported, such as: histogram of activity, time per project per week, most used apps, etc.

Moreover, these stats can be computed on arbitrary periods of time (e.g. yesterday, last 30 days, last year, or any other range).

Users can assign a "productivity score" to each project. The global productivity score is then computed each day, as well as evolution of productivity per hour or day.

With the more "pro" licenses, advanced exporting options are available.

I'm very happy to get these very complete insights with so little effort.

Cons: There are a few features that I would have liked to see supported, even though they are not dealbreakers.

Initial setup:

Depending on the number of combinations of applications and work directories in use, it can take a bit of time to setup the automatic classification rules. The matching engine is very powerful, but the UI to set rule priority is not super friendly.

After this initial setup period though, everything runs very smoothly.

Lack of timezone support:

If I spend e.g. 6 months in the US, and 6 months in Europe, the reports will convert all past activities to the current timezone instead of whatever the local time was when the activity was recorded. This means that the histogram of "active hours", etc will be wrong.

Lack of synchronization:

When using two or more machines, all activities and projects are completely independent.

The developper proposes scripts to import & export projects, which helped me get started on my work laptop. However, time tracked from then on, as well as projects and classification rules evolve independently on each machine. There's no way to get a global view of activity on all machines.

I realize that proper synchronization would be very difficult to implement, and probably a pretty niche use-case.

I was able to contact the developer with this feedback. He was very responsive and took time to explain the different design tradeoffs or difficulties in implementing some of the proposed features.

Overall: More insights about my days at work.

The missing piece of my trusted system.

Pros: I knew something was missing from my task management system, I just couldn't quite figure out what it was. Until I discovered Timing.

Timing does exactly what I need it to help me keep track of what I've done when I did it, and how long it took. I've not encountered a situation yet where I felt like I needed a feature it didn't already provide. I can track my time and sort it whatever way I want. As an OmniFocus user, I'm always excited when an app integrates with it. Timing's integration allows me to import my folders and projects so I can assign tasks to them. Saves me a lot of unnecessary and tedious work by not having to enter it all by hand. This is not a small thing for me.

The interface makes perfect sense and looks great, though the feature set of the app is deep and powerful enough that there is a bit of a learning curve. It's not onerous by any stretch of the imagination, just don't expect a clickwheel-level of simplicity and user-friendliness. Though, compared to something like OmniFocus, Timing is dead obvious to figure out.

I honestly have nothing but good things to say about this app so far. I'm totally impressed. I even have reservations about the one star I took off of "Ease of Use" because it is entirely possible that any confusion I've experienced is simply user error.

Thanks for a great piece of software.

Cons: The only feature on my wishlist is a dark theme. I prefer the look and, personal aesthetic biases aside, I prefer dark background with light text because I find it more comfortable to look at.

Overall: Timing helps me be at least three times as productive. I can't deceive myself about how much time I'm wasting by jumping all over the place according to whatever task occurs to me. I now set an intention and track it. Timing then shows me how well I've adhered to it. This app helps me more ever time I use it.

Pros: The automation in Timing is fantastic. What truly makes Timing exceptional is the custom automation feature where you can customize where time is recorded based on Folder location, applications, and file names.

As a non-profit director I am constantly juggling finances, fundraising, administrative tasks, donor relations, content for advertising, plus many other things. With Timing I can set my custom time-tracking choices and just get work done, I don't have to make sure I click a button before I get started. Timing is always working in the background and I can regularly review where all my time is spent (even the wasted time on the internet and social media...). You can even create "blacklist" rules that prevent time tracking if there are certain types of things you don't want tracked on your Mac.

I've tried other web-based time trackers that offer both Mac and iOS apps and while great, they don't match Timing on the Mac. Plus, you can set a reminder in Timing to remind you for activity after you've been away from your Mac.

Cons: While the automation is truly remarkable, it can take a little extra work getting everything setup. There is a bit of a learning curve to get these customizations setup, but is an email series to help get you started on all the features.

Overall: I no longer have to worry about clicking a start or stop button to track my time on all of my different projects and work. With Timing I can just start working and GTD and set aside time to review my time. It helps so me which projects are taking too much and can highlight other projects that need more time.

Pros: Rules can be created with multiple AND and OR condition over multiple sources, which make it very detailed in its capabilities to record when and where you are doing what.

This is awesome as it catches things you have long forgotten about. Even when the bulk of your work is done in a pretty complete toolset this allows noticing that that one terminal session also was really about a particular project.

Timing has a mature feature set and is pleasant to look at. It is stable and hardly uses any resources.

I can, have and will recommend this software to any freelancer that needs to get on top of his/her time tracking.

Cons: There is one feature I hope the author(s) will address someday. When adding or changing a rule Timing isn't capable of re-evaluating those changes over existing activity recordings. Therefore when you start a project you'll need to set up rules and make sure that they cover your particular case.

You -can- however, add activities manually to projects, but that still requires you to do some manual repetitive work. Which then is well... uh, you know, not done.

Oh, the other thing is that it tracks how much I actually watch Netflix on my laptop. That's really too much information... ;-)

Timing takes time to setup but afterwards helps you understand your time perfectly!

Pros: - Very reliable

- Doesn't crash, ever

- Always tracking time

- Very colorful UI with good visualization mechanisms

- Customizable

- Detail-oriented

- Trial is so long you will 100% by the end whether you like it or not

Cons: - Pricing maybe a bit too high, but the time invested into this and the fact that it's not subscription based like a lot of other premium software justifies it.

- Takes some up front time to setup the different projects and what key words/tasks automatically associate with what projects. After that, it's smooth sailing.

- Very, very MINOR: A lot of manual reassignment of activities need to be done from project to project if you use one piece of software or website for many projects. This is just a limitation of the program being simple enough for users and having a very straightforward "if it contains these words put it into this project." The problem arises when one word fits into multiple projects, but in certain situations the task maps to the wrong project. This is a con, but is something that should be expected since I can't think of any software in the world that can do something like that. Fixing this problem might lie in some Machine Learning applications :) So this trade off arises in order to increase the ease of use for users in my opinion!

Overall: I used to think I was a super busy guy who did not have time for all the troubles of life. But, after tracking my time on this software for the past month+, I have come to realize that I spend more of my time in passive enjoyment like browsing the web or watching youtube instead of actively enjoying activities like reading a book or playing sports. This realization has helped me understand why I felt so busy and unhappy: because I was spending all my "free time" on things that did not make me happy, so I kept spending more and more time to relax without any progress, which lead to me not putting enough time into my work. Now I try to spend most of my time either enjoying high-quality, fun activities or doing focused work, nothing in between.

Pros: I've used bunch of apps that track my activity on my Mac, but this app will be my last one. Timing specifies the time that I spent on each file & document & web address, so that I can figure out what kind of things I actually worked on. This app helps me to recognize the discrepancy between my suppositions on the time spent and the actual time that I spent in each app or files. Also the auto-categorization (once I drag the specific apps & keywords & files to a category) makes the daily use of the app effortless.

Cons: I can hardly find any cons for the functionality of the app, but this powerful functionality might create a trade-off to the intuitiveness and sleek design of the app. While the developers do provide kind and detailed manual to use the app, at first the interface didn't seem intuitive, so I took some time to get used to the interface. (maybe an initial instruction screen for categorizing will help the newbies!) Also the color labels doesn't look harmonious when appeared in the statistics... I hope there is an option for custom color-just the only complaint for now!

Overall: I am a graduate student in humanities, and usually work at home-since my time management is flexible, avoiding procrastination has been a great challenge for me. This app makes me realize how much unnecessary time for online shopping, etc. is spent(e.g. www.amazon.com for 2.7 hours), and be aware of it.

To get the most of the app, such as the overall productivity score, this app requires pretty much initial personal settings such as adjusting the productivity rating and putting the keywords for each categories, and this personal setting is the core of making the statistical data meaningful. I'm happy to see the data accumulating for the statistics (for the whole week, month, or year) but still need a lot of personal (fine-tuned) adjustments to get a meaningful (categorized) data, and this does take some effort and time.

Pros: I've used a few different time tracking apps in the past, and even developer an in-house solution for a previous employer. Timing is easier and more enjoyable to use than anything I've used previously, and has clearly been designed with attention to detail.

The killer feature for me, is never having to *remember* to log my time. Timing always records the apps I'm using, so I can easily look back at the end of a day and remember what I did. Building up my own custom rules means that the majority of my time is automatically assigned to the correct projects, without me having to do a thing.

The other key feature for me is privacy - so much of the other software I use is built into the cloud, and it's important to have an app like this keep everything local to my computer and allow me to share/export only the information I choose.

Cons: Having used it every day for over 6 months, it's hard to find any real flaws in Timing. It requires an initial investment of time to get your head round all the features, but the app author has a great tutorial video which helps. It can also require some initial trial and error working out the best way to arrange your Projects and Tasks, but that's more of a challenge of time tracking than an issue with the app itself!

Overall: Allows me to easily keep track of what I'm working on, and provide this important data to my employer.

Pros: At the end of the day I often wonder what the heck I have done. Do you know the feeling? No more! Timing automatically logs your activities on a mac - you can add projects and sub-projects (e.g. finances - budgets) and associate an activity with the project, you can also automate this should you want to (e.g. always make work in Quickbooks part of your finance project). You can manually add activities (e.g. a meeting that didn't require your computer). Its all done in a way that is simple and straight forward. On another tab you get your reports, which are easy to put together (just chose if you want reports for last month, this week etc or a certain date range) and you get beautiful graphs. The best thing I like about Timing is it is NOT subscription based like so many others, but you pay for the software once - the a bit more expensive edition lets you use apple script to set up more automated processes - something I would love to do but haven't yet had there time to delve into and learn.

Cons: The only cons are the ones that come with any software to log your tasks and activities. You need to actually write things down. However, in the case of Timing this is only true for offline activities away from your computer. A mobile app for the phone would be nice to help with that but is not available.

Pros: - Desktop app, not a website

- Coloured timeline

- Manual and automatical task categorisation (you can categorise some apps, websites, folders or keywords as always belonging to a specific task/activity but you can also manually overrun it or track time by starting and finishing task after task)

- Productivity score based on productivity scores assigned to each task

- Great flexibility

- Great statistics

- Immediate support

Cons: - You can't override a manual task assigment with an automatic assignment. Usually I'm working on something for a longer time so I manually assign it to a task. But it is often the case that in the meantime sometting needs my attention, e.g. an email comes and I have to reply right away and then switch back to the long-term task. The most efficient way to count how much time has been spent on the main task and how much on other tasks ("distractions") would be to set the main task manually (e.g. 10-11 = Writing) but to drag some apps that were used in this period (e.g. 3 minutes of gmail) to other categories (e.g. gmail) and substract them from the time spent on the main, manually set task.

- I'd love to set shortcuts for the most often used projects and have a list of most often used projects to be able to assign activities faster and without scrolling a very long projects list.

Overall: Timing combines many things in one app: manual time tracking and automatic time tracking; estimating time needed for a task (and then readjusting it if needed) or categorising the time after working for few hours or a day. It has a beautiful and very flexible menu. After using many time tracking apps I would definitely recommend this one as number one, much better than for example Toggl. It really makes me think about my time and categorise it properly.

Tracks every minute spent using every app and presents this information beautifully.

Pros: Timing allows you to develop increasingly complex workflows as you gain familiarity with the software.

Initially, it was enough to simply track the use of certain applications and manually drag the items into individual projects. As I my familiarity increased, I learnt the power of rules and file/folder preferences which allow multiple workstreams to be tracked and the tasks allocated to the individual projects. I can track the workstreams of the multiple teams that I work with and then invoice time for each team individually. Timing comes with a range of export options built into the app that allows the data to be further processed or submitted.

I subscribe to Timing through Settapp but if that was to disappear I would buy the app the very next day. Such is the value that it has in my workflow.

Keyboard shortcuts make this app multitasking dream.

Cons: I would like Timing more if when I move between review and report pages in the app, any projects that were currently selected remained selected.

Overall: Speedy billing for clients and accurate time tracking

Pros: I have tried many of these kinds of "background" time tracking programs and none of them have gotten it right like Timing does. I live that Timing provides a timeline of what you were doing at any given time. Many other programs track that information, but they don't provide a clean and easy-to-use interface so you can see that. I'm also thrilled that Timing has AppleScript support so I can export my data in the format I need.

Cons: Sometimes if I step away from my desk for a few minutes and come back, the "what were you doing" notification is a bit annoying, but it's a minor disturbance compared to the value provided by the software.

Overall: At the end of every day, I'm able to look through my Timing records and update my company's internal time tracking system with the appropriate tasks. Because I'm a busy team leader, I get called to so many questions, tasks, and meetings that I struggle to keep track of everything I did during the day. This tool is the solution to that problem, allowing me to see all the programs I was using and remember where my time went throughout the day so I can update the appropriate customer accounts. It even asks you what you were doing when you return to your computer, allowing you to quickly log that last meeting, etc.

Pros: There are so many things I love about this software that I don't even know where to start. I love how it helps me stay on track with what I'm doing during the day, increases my productivity, and see what areas I need to focus on more. It's incredibly easy to use and has so many various ways to analyze your data. I also love that it runs automatically for me instead of requiring me to start it myself. In other programs, I'd forget.

Cons: There really are no cons. The only thing I can think of is at first it seems overwhelming, but Timing took care of that by providing tutorials that were short and helpful. The less than one minute things are sometimes annoying because I'm not sure where to sort them.

Overall: Because of I'm timing, I'm able to first see just how productive I am. I didn't think I was that productive during the day, but I'm realizing I am more productive than I thought. I'm also noticing I'm staying on track more than I was before. I won't go to social media to goof off because I know it's "watching." I also love that it keeps track of everything for me because I've used other programs before where I had to manually go in and start/stop and edit things and honestly, I'd tell a little white to the program (and myself) that I was "productive" the entire time. That's not helping me. This program doesn't really allow for it -- I mean, I know I can, but I don't because of the automaticity. I love this program and I don't even know all of the FULL benefits yet (I just upgraded to expert-- SO EXCITED!). Thank you so much for creating this program!

Pros: - really the best time tracking tool for freelancers when working on multiple projects. I often switch to another project without "planning" it and with timing I can see exactly when that happened.

- unlike most other tools the working day does not end at midnight (I often work past midnight)

- can automatically assign projects based on the titles of the windows you are working on

- great way to review the work of the day

- does not require to store date in the cloud

- very reliable -- no crashes for years

- excellent customer support

Cons: Color scheme is not well thought out (I wish I could assign a base color to a project and then sub-projects would use shades of the base color)

A bit expensive, but worth the money

Overall: Its very easy to figure out when I have been using on which project. Tools that require to set the project I am working on manually never worked for me. Timing is the tool I have been dreaming of for years!

Pros: What I like best is being able to classify my time by projects that I entered into the Timing App. Because I work on a large variety of projects throughout the day and generally use the same set of applications, I needed more than just tracking my time by applications. Timing allows me to create this custom level of categorization and because of the automation features, I only spend about 2 minutes per day (on average based on Timing App tracking) categorizing time that does not automatically fall into one of my projects. Would like to point out that you are able to automate down to the URL level when using a browser which is my most used application. I'm also able to use the Task feature which will separate application time into different projects when I'm working in that application during separate parts of the day.

Cons: The only nit-picky thing I don't like is the donut charts on the overview tab in the app that show you the breakdown of your time spent. Although they look nice and are sorted by heavy to light use (by project or application), it's hard to compare two items in the chart with just a glance.

Overall: What benefits me the most is being able to see where I spend my time most. It also will provide me with data to back up my claims that I'm "spending to much time doing X" or "my skills aren't being utilized when I have to spend X time working on X project or in X application." The Timing App also opens the doors to be more flexible with creating SMART goals because now I'm able to provide data on exactly where I spend my time and give a percentage of my productivity (albeit, the productivity score is set by the user so you need to have discipline)

This is an amazing product, a killer app for productivity and time tracking freaks.

Pros: This is a very powerful tool, I would be hard pressed to identify what it may be lacking.

I switched to Timing from an equivalent online tool that would upload data into their servers, so obviously keeping my data on my machine only is a great bonus for privacy.

The user interface is not only detailed and thorough, it is also well-designed and engaging.

Customer support has also proved to be excellent.

It's a very deep app and I am just scratching the surface of what it can provide me, yet it is already a great help.

Cons: The learning curve is a bit steep, but that price is well worth the payoff in the end. In the latest version of the app (v2), it took me a while to set up all my automatic filters and rules. But I have had a good setup going for a few months now and it is proving very useful for tracking my time and seeing exactly what I am doing and when.

Pros: It is constantly working in the background -- I don't have to remember to stop and start timers and/or go back at the end of the day and remember what I did 8 hours ago.

Now that it syncs between my desktop and laptop, it's almost invaluable.

The rules that automatically file tasks in the correct folders mean that even reviewing my time from the previous day barely takes any time at all.

Cons: There are still a few hidden things that make it have a bit of a learning curve -- I've been using it for almost a year and it seems like I'm still learning things about it that I didn't know.

Overall: I can't even calculate how much extra money this app has made me this year, I'm able to quickly and accurately bill customers for the exact work I've done with 100% confidence.

I don't want to tell them this, but I'd pay way more for this software. I have and will continue to recommend it to people as the go-to time tracking software. I've tried so many other time tracking 'solutions' from writing things on paper (my previous best experiment, sad to say) to clicking a button whenever I stop/start a new task and I could never stay with anything for very long because I'd get started on a new task, get interrupted by a phone call or email or something else and end up with wildly inaccurate totals.

Pros: The most important feature of timing is that during the work day there is no manual effort needed. You just open the app and it tracks the time spent in each program in the background. It has some preset rules for categorising different apps. During the review of the time there is some manual effort required to categorise the unassigned applications. This is really easy and can be done with Drag and Drop.

The visualisation of the data is great. The overview page gives a nice glance over the most important statistics. If you need to go deeper there are more sophisticated reporting tools.

I use the app mostly to track personal and university projects. I tend to procrastinate a lot and the app helps me uncover it so I know how much time I have lost. The Overview is especially useful for this.

Cons: The User-Interface looks great but the User-Experience could be better. You have to get used to the different pages and have to search for specific functions. After you have learned the application it is easy to use but it takes some time.

Pros: Timing keeps me honest. I'm a software engineer and I work on a computer all day. I love how Timing tracks what applications I'm using, what websites I'm visiting, and for how long. It does a mediocre job at automatically categorizing things into productive or not but I like that I can also choose to categorize certain activities as productive or unproductive (e.g. visiting Facebook!) on my own.

Timing is also really nice for remembering what you did the day before, week before ,etc. I can't tell you how many times I forget what I did the day before. With Timing it's very easy to look back and see.

Lastly, I like that I can use Timing to have a data-driven approach to productivity. While some time spent may not be considered unproductive, it can be considered a less-than-ideal use of time. It's nice to be able to look back and see areas where I can optimize my time.

Cons: The learning curve is a bit steep at first. To be honest, I still haven't learned all of the features. I also wish there was a way to set what days and times it should track. If I'm using my computer on the weekend or after hours, I don't want to include that in my overall tracking. Maybe there is a way but I'm just not familiar with it.

Overall: There's a lot of benefits to using this software but I particularly like how I can use this software to take a data-driven approach to my productivity. It really does keep my honest.

Pros: - native Mac app (thank you!!!! I really do not like the current trend of slow and ugly web apps/ electron apps.)

- well made

- good design, good user experience, and super fast because it is native

- works offline no need to send anyone the data

- you can backup your data if you want

- fellow indie project

- current project with regular updates

- it just works

- lots of features and configurations

- you don't need a manual or a video to use this app... it is intuitive... just give it a shot!

Cons: - my only con is/was the price tiers. I bought my version from a reseller during Black Friday Sale without consulting the actual website. It turns out, there are 3 different price tiers and I did not know that during the purchasing of the app. It did not leave a good feeling for me but I know there was a miscommunication somewhere in the marketing. So... make sure to check features of the app and buy the version of software that you want

Overall: - measure your progress

- track performance and habits

- project management

Pros: First and foremost I have to make a disclaimer: I'm a fan of Timing, so no matter how much I'd like to write an objective review of the product, deep in my heart I know it will be a biased one.

With that being said:

- Functionality-wise it has everything you can think of to track the time you spend on your system

- A chapter apart deserves the project management which is nothing short of amazing

- Engineering deserves another chapter: while being able to track EVERYTHING, including what you do on your terminal (!), Timing remains a low-impact application meaning your system will barely notice it is running

- Gorgeous GUI full of useful information

- It's continuously being updated

- Developers are kind and responsive

- Timing is provided in three different versions to suit your needs

- Ability to sync different Timing installations

- It rapidly becomes a must-have partner

Cons: - Price: this is a pricey piece

- Steep learning curve: at first it could be intimidating

Really nothing else I can think of

Overall: I've been using Timing for approximately three months now, and I love it. Now I have complete control over my projects, and I know exactly how much time I expend on them.

Timing has also helped me to sharpen my time estimations skills: I was so out of the line before using Timing, and I wasn't aware of that.

I love Timing, but as I stated above, the price is on the steep side for my pocket.

Pros: The passiveness of the app allows me to not have to think about it. I just let it sit in the background and it will automatically categorize my computer usage via pre-defined rules. The customizability is also adequate, as you can manually re-categorize if there are exceptions to rules or uncategorized usage. Tagging usage by keywords/URL/filepaths makes it very easy to categorize usage in bulk.

Cons: I'm not used to the notion of "tasks" in the software, since it relies on manual entry. Sometimes the start/end time of the task is inaccurate maybe it would be good to have a threshold of detection for a task interval.

Also, when adding a new rule, it would be useful if that rule can be applied to previous usage rather than manually adding everything from the past.

I've been using Timing to track my development hours for my own apps.

Pros: I really like that Timing automatically tracks everything I do on my Mac. It's great not to have to think about starting and stopping timers. The Review section is probably my favorite feature. It quickly allows me to sort tracked time into self created projects and folders. I can get as granular and nerdy as I want or keep it simple. I create projects in Timing that correlate to my projects in Omnifocus so I know how much time I'm spending on things. I really like the way the developer added Tags and Paths. They allow me see my data in ways other than just by application or by website. Seriously it's an amazing app. The overview section's wealth of data is also great.

Cons: The app on first open can be kind of overwhelming. After my first day of use, I went and looked at the data and didn't know what I was looking at. There is a learning curve, but it isn't that steep. The developer has some great videos that explained everything I needed to know. I think he has done a great job at making a large amount of data look as simple as possible, but it still can be a bit overwhelming it you're new.

Overall: I get hard data on how I use my time on my Mac. We tend to exaggerate how much time we spend on things. Having Timing automatically track everything without uploading it anywhere is great.

Pros: The way of tracking of what you're actually spending time with on your computer. It's so easy to get carried away.

The developer is an incredibly nice individual. The support I've received was outstanding. It's very impressive to see a one-man army build such an awesome product, with all the inbound educational content and product management, that goes into building this piece of software.

Cons: Definitely takes some time to set up the way it works best for you. There is a high level of customizability with all the rules.

I believe the next level of major expansion is team capabilities. It's perfect for 1 person, but as a business manager, it would be wonderful to have built-in sharing capabilities. But the report exporting functionality is great too!

Overall: Never was able to use time tracking software effectively, with the reporting that this program offers, I have the perfect way of billing the minutes/hours I've spent on that specific project.

Pros: Works painlessly and silently behind the scenes - I don't know it's there until I suddenly find I need to know what I was doing and for how long on a given day two weeks ago. No nag dialogs, no remembering to start a timer or notate something, just tells you in extreme detail what you did and when you did it. Very flexible reporting.

Cons: I still don't quite get some of the rule-setting and how those rules interact with the various apps, but really, I could just use this with it's default settings out of the box and it does what I need.

Overall: It makes sure I get paid for my work!

Pros: Timing tracks everything I'm doing on my Mac, passively. When I work on things that bill by time, I don't need to remember to start any timer or stop any timer. I could always go back to Timing to extract out the exact time that I've spent on the work based on the time I spend on the software. I think it's easier for me, and better for my clients.

Cons: The interface has seen an improvement from version 1. I'm not such a big fan of the default colors used for my projects and tasks though, but it's not a big deal for me.

Overall: Knowing where I've spent my time on while on my Mac.

Pros: I like that makes time-tracking easy, painless, and automatic. With pretty much every other time tracker I used, I had to automatically input my hours. This was annoying, and I often forgot to log things! Timing takes all of the pain out of time-tracking while delivering detailed reports not only of *how* you spent your time, but also how productive you were (based off your own productivity 'scores' for various types of tasks). It's customizable while being totally painless. I use it everyday to monitor my productivity and task completion, and I've recommended it to others.

Cons: I wish that it synced easily with my other Mac---ideally, it would also sync with iPhone! Though I realize that this is extremely difficult to pull off and hasn't affected my desire to use it! It's by far the best tracking app I've found (and I've spent *a lot* of time looking!)

Pros: I am using Timing all the time, nearly 5k hrs, to track all my activities. Timing has a useful project management system that can separate my task into individual projects and give me weekly reports so it's easier for me to control my time more efficiently.

Cons: It's not very friendly for a new user since you have to configure all the rules by yourselves. I would say if Timing can have a general rule or reference rule for common websites like Youtube or Facebook, it would be easier for people to get used to it.

Pros: Very well made:

- The app looks very nice and looks deserving of the immense effort that probably might have gone into designing the UI

- Very cool reports that give you just the right level of detail to determine where your time is being spent

- Lot of attention to detail. For e.g., I love the menu bar icon that shows my current efficiency rate

Feature rich:

- It already knows about a bunch of things and knows how to classify them. For e.g., it is familiar with domains related to development

- I can train it the way I want to. For e.g., I can tell the app to log all hours I spend in the Ulysses app into my development projects

- Quite a few number of reports that allows me to slice and dice the data as I want to. This makes it very easy for me to bill my clients very accurately. In fact, I have just started to attach a screenshot of the report (filtered on the client) in my invoice to some clients. They appreciate the transparency.

- I also use it to monitor my personal work. For e.g., Netflix appears in bright red in my 'Time Wasters' project

Overall: Personal improvement and helps me in managing my billing invoices

Pros: - Many different ways to categorize time

- Super powerful custom rules (including regex)

- Easy automatic rules (option-drag a keyword, path, etc. to a category and it remembers it for the future)

- Nice visualizations to see patterns

- Very powerful reporting options

- Scriptable with AppleScript

- It syncs across macs

Cons: - Making reports is a little confusing (there are a lot of options and it's not always obvious what they do)

- When I'm categorizing time, I have to switch back and forth between the Review and Details tabs

- It would be nice to have calendar integration so I could include and categorize events

Overall: It's quite pricey, especially for the Expert version, but it's worth it if you want a lot of control and power. Take the time to learn the features and set up rules, and you'll get a lot of value from it.

Pros: At every corner this app succeeds. With a fair pricing model and a supportive and quick to respond developer it has set the standard for the other apps I use. Design wise Timing is extremely clean, while giving you a fantastic amount of information to look at and use while not being excessive. My time with Timing has been nothing but a joy to use and has paid for itself ten fold.

Cons: I wish there was an API for adding functionality from other apps, or your own, I feel it would really improve how Timing works in the long run. Otherwise, no real complaints.

Overall: After using it to understand where my time was going throughout my day I was able to better build my calendar for the new year. This let me begin moving forward in freelance contracting while also allowing my clients to better understand where their money is going.

Cons: Some of the apps do not support Timing, so you are not able to track what you've been doing by window titles. It is troublesome. Apps like: Franz

Overall: It's beneficial to use this application if you are looking for automatic time tracking. Since I bought this application I don't bother about filling up work timesheets daily, I can do it at the very end of the month because all data is stored inside the app.

Pros: Timing is effortless. It runs in the background, monitoring what you are doing and classifying where your time is spent (according to default rules or the ones you tweak yourself). It can classify your work according to project, keywords, or application -- helping you to analyze the situation from different perspectives.

Cons: The rule editor could be improved a little bit. For example, there exist some default categories like "Reading & Writing Applications." Presently, there is no way to edit the group directly to specify which applications to include or exclude. (You may, of course, add any application by hand to any rule that you're creating. But if you want to create a group of applications that you can use in multiple rules, you can't do that right now.)

Pros: I do a daily review of how I spent my time not only for billing purposes but also to see how I can continue to focus on productivity. And it works/syncs on both of my computers so it doesn't matter if I am on my iMac or MBP. It really is a modern way to track time!

Cons: Every time I have a wish list item I send it in to the team and everything that was possible they've basically included in a release.

Overall: I find I am able to bill more accurately and am not guessing on how I spent my time if I forgot to start a clock. I love that it is my safety blanket, and it keeps me focused when I look at how I spend time.

Pros: There are many time trackers, but almost all focus on reporting, and rely on users working a stopwatch to capture time info. The real problem is capturing time info and allocating to projects, not reporting, and Timing is one of only a few tools that track what you do automatically.

Cons: Some of the rollover pop up menus drive me crazy. Also they need to do an iOS app so you can track time at client sites as automatically as you track Mac app / document usage.

Cons: I have not found anything I dislike about this app yet, and have been using it for more than 8 months now.

Pros: It automatically tracks your time without manual intervention. You don't have to tell it when you're using a program or when to stop. You can associate a program/folder/keywords with a project and it will automatically assign the time to the project. If you need to, you can also assign a period of time as a task to a project overriding any individual program's assignment. It also includes sync between multiple computers now.

Cons: It takes a while to onboard with setting up projects and customizing the automatic assignments. Then, much like any workflow/process, you need to adjust your personal habits to get the benefit of having Timing track your application usage.

I also like that you can get a productivity score as a motivator for the day, or as a summery of a week.

The design is pretty and makes the "boring" task of time tracking enjoyable.

Cons: There are two main cons against the software.

There is no iPad app, which would have bin nice.

Pros: Automatic tracking of software usage that you can later easily put in report shape. Perfect tool for freelancers that will make day work easier. It is enough that once you create rule for specific app, file or folder, then application will automatically record hours for project or task. Nice thing is that you can create rules for un-productive things (example: social networks) so you can see how much daily minutes (maybe hours :)) you waste in time of work.

Cons: Software have some missing features, but in support conversation, plenty of them will be implemented in future versions.

Pros: I spend all day on my Mac as a software engineer and I always have Timing running. The UI is simply gorgeous and shines as a macOS app. The graphs and animations are super useful and allow me to see how much time I've spent on various websites, in the IDE, and on Slack (too much!). I love the feature that points to your most productive hours.

Cons: For advanced users, the ability to assign time to specific projects may be helpful, but I don't need that functionality. I spend most of my time on the main overview screen, so the others are overkill -- but I suspect freelance users who are billing individual clients would find it very useful.

I liked Timing from the first view, but colleagues of mine insisted that I try something ''free''. I tried and lost so much time there. When I finally bought Timing, right on the 1st of January, I was satisfied after few minutes using it! Beautiful reports, a lot of setting to adjust to your needs and support is superb!

Cons: Cant name any of the negative part , everything is brilliant, software is amazing, must have to everybody who is counting their working hours.

Pros: Timing makes it really easy to understand how productive you really are at your computer. Spent 8 hours pounding on your keyboard? It was a surprise for me to realise that a lot of it was spent on Slack and other messaging apps. This made me aware of where my time was really going and thus able to mitigate that by instilling new rules for how I use my time.

Cons: Timing can do a better job tracking the actual usage within each app based on the content instead of just general app use. For e.g. it will be great to know that I spent 4 hours on Project A writing my proposal and 1 hour on Project B instead of just 5 hours of app use. This does work most of the time but not always.

Overall: Timing is like Screen Time that was introduced in iOS 12. I wonder if it will eventually be Sherlocked but for now, it is probably one of the best tools there is to help you understand what you are really spending the most time on your Mac. I hope that there will be better tracking that can be based on the contents of what you are working on in time to come.

Pros: Timing allows me a low-friction way to keep track of how I spend my time. It's just as handy for managing my time-wasting habits as it is for tracking my time spent on various projects.

Cons: No real cons to this little gem. The developer has done a great job of responding to user feedback and implementing suggestions. Gets better with each version.

Overall: I needed a way to track my time but was constantly falling off the wagon having to remember to do it manually. With Timing, I can see exactly how my time was spent and it's just a matter of drag-and-drop to make sure everything is recorded the way it needs to be. I can also see at a glance where my time is going.

Pros: This software is simple and it has worked well for years now without problems.

Cons: If anything, I'd say the price is a little high. But this app has little to no flaws that I can see after using it for the last few years.

Overall: This software saves me so much time and hassle. I'm a freelancer and I use this app everyday. The developer is actively working to continually improve it and it shows. I love mac, and this app is 100% Mac. Very simple and intuitive while providing complex options for time organization.
