### "Just a wonderful piece of software - fully automated with granular tracking logic and robust integrations."

January 31, 2025

5.0

This software has been a total game-changer for me. Feels as if it's been custom-built to suit the way I work. I tried a few other apps before Timing, but nothing came close in terms of being able to customise auto-tracking the way I needed. If you're a freelancer - YOU NEED THIS APP!

Pros

\- Fully automated timing functionality - just start working on something and Timing does the rest (no manual stop/start). - Tracking across multiple apps based on multiple criteria/logic (e.g. if I'm in 'Sublime Text' and the file is located in 'this folder' = track time to 'this project') - Daily summaries and productivity rating - Lightweight (e.g. currently using only 194MB Ram / 2.6% CPU) - UI is well put together and easy to navigate - Well documented

Cons

\- Zero: there is nothing I dislike about this app. I see in other reviews it's been mentioned about the setup time investment. However, I don't see this as a 'con' at all, it's actually a useful process to go through to help you seperate out your projects and create sub-projects for different tasks/clients.

### "Best software to track projects and computer use."

March 18, 2021

5.0

I got it as a part of SetApp subscription service, which also great. I'm completely satisfied, which I can't say about other software of this kind. Most of them where uninstalled just few minutes after. This one sticked for months now and I know I'll keep it as long as possible. It has this nice gamification feel to it, because it shows clearly how much time has been wasted, how long I worked and what's my productivity score. It's really nice to see that because of this software my productivity soared from 40-50% to 80-90%. Sometimes for as long as 8-10 hours. That's really something amazing!

Pros

It's a great software! I've been looking for some different products to monitor my productivity. I work from home and I struggled for years to be more accountable to myself and more productive. Although this software was intended to bill for various project, I find it useful for this as well. Whole UI is very simple and clean. I created different projects and sub-projects to monitor what I spend my time one, like "accounting", "planning" and "marketing". Reviewing and analyzing what I was doing and what was my productivity hour by hour and overall is a great tool. It's one of those programs that that really helped me. It's sufficient and does everything great.

Cons

It could be a little bit more intelligent in predicting what I was working on, but seriously, there is just looking for something negative. Oh, maybe removing activity from timeline would be useful. Maybe I would add an option to monitor iPhone usage as well, because I sometimes talk a lot on phone while away from keyboard or manage my social media.

Reason for choosing Timing

It was free with SetApp and it was the initial motivation... But soon I discovered it's just perfectly what I need. I've tried other software like that, but this is the best option for me.

### "too expensive"

January 1, 2020

2.0

I will not renew my subscription. I will find a cheap alternative and a one-time purchase or even a free one.

Pros

it seemed useful for watching my computer daily engagement

Cons

it was too expensive to buy (39 euro for just one year!) and it demands a yearly subscription. Not at all good for a private user. I now realize that it targets businesses who are willing to pay any amount. But if you are a private user like myself, then do not buy it, it is not worth its money.

### "Invisible Timetracking"

February 6, 2020

4.0

Overall I love how invisible Timing is. It doesn't require that I start or stop it, or even give it a task name. I can take a good look at my efficiency and how much time I'm devoting to each project.

Pros

The best part of this software is that it runs in the background, using your active window to determine the activity you're working on. It is very granular and gives a very in-depth look into how your time is \_actually\_ spent. From there, they make it easy to "group" time blocks into tasks, which is convenient when the window path isn't enough to identify the project/activity you're working on.

Cons

I do find it takes a good amount of time to set up the automation rules necessary to get the most value out of the product. I also must dedicate 20-30 min a week to review my time, group into tasks, and ensure things are accurate.

### "Outstanding software for time tracking"

September 24, 2018

5.0

Timing combines many things in one app: manual time tracking and automatic time tracking; estimating time needed for a task (and then readjusting it if needed) or categorising the time after working for few hours or a day. It has a beautiful and very flexible menu. After using many time tracking apps I would definitely recommend this one as number one, much better than for example Toggl. It really makes me think about my time and categorise it properly.

Pros

\- Desktop app, not a website - Coloured timeline - Manual and automatical task categorisation (you can categorise some apps, websites, folders or keywords as always belonging to a specific task/activity but you can also manually overrun it or track time by starting and finishing task after task) - Productivity score based on productivity scores assigned to each task - Great flexibility - Great statistics - Immediate support

Cons

\- You can't override a manual task assigment with an automatic assignment. Usually I'm working on something for a longer time so I manually assign it to a task. But it is often the case that in the meantime sometting needs my attention, e.g. an email comes and I have to reply right away and then switch back to the long-term task. The most efficient way to count how much time has been spent on the main task and how much on other tasks ("distractions") would be to set the main task manually (e.g. 10-11 = Writing) but to drag some apps that were used in this period (e.g. 3 minutes of gmail) to other categories (e.g. gmail) and substract them from the time spent on the main, manually set task. - I'd love to set shortcuts for the most often used projects and have a list of most often used projects to be able to assign activities faster and without scrolling a very long projects list.

### "The first time tracking tool that fits my needs: it tracks what I do and I can assign projects later"

July 26, 2018

5.0

Its very easy to figure out when I have been using on which project. Tools that require to set the project I am working on manually never worked for me. Timing is the tool I have been dreaming of for years!

Pros

\- really the best time tracking tool for freelancers when working on multiple projects. I often switch to another project without "planning" it and with timing I can see exactly when that happened. - unlike most other tools the working day does not end at midnight (I often work past midnight) - can automatically assign projects based on the titles of the windows you are working on - great way to review the work of the day - does not require to store date in the cloud - very reliable -- no crashes for years - excellent customer support

Cons

Color scheme is not well thought out (I wish I could assign a base color to a project and then sub-projects would use shades of the base color) A bit expensive, but worth the money

### "Exactly What I Wanted"

March 27, 2018

5.0

What benefits me the most is being able to see where I spend my time most. It also will provide me with data to back up my claims that I'm "spending to much time doing X" or "my skills aren't being utilized when I have to spend X time working on X project or in X application." The Timing App also opens the doors to be more flexible with creating SMART goals because now I'm able to provide data on exactly where I spend my time and give a percentage of my productivity (albeit, the productivity score is set by the user so you need to have discipline)

Pros

What I like best is being able to classify my time by projects that I entered into the Timing App. Because I work on a large variety of projects throughout the day and generally use the same set of applications, I needed more than just tracking my time by applications. Timing allows me to create this custom level of categorization and because of the automation features, I only spend about 2 minutes per day (on average based on Timing App tracking) categorizing time that does not automatically fall into one of my projects. Would like to point out that you are able to automate down to the URL level when using a browser which is my most used application. I'm also able to use the Task feature which will separate application time into different projects when I'm working in that application during separate parts of the day.

Cons

The only nit-picky thing I don't like is the donut charts on the overview tab in the app that show you the breakdown of your time spent. Although they look nice and are sorted by heavy to light use (by project or application), it's hard to compare two items in the chart with just a glance.

### "Best Solution for Tracking Time"

April 15, 2020

5.0

Pros

I use Timing to keep track of time spent on my personal and client projects. Timing makes time tracking easy for me because I do most of all my work on the computer. So each time I switch between applications, Timing automatically tracks the time I'm using in each application. I can also set up separate time tracking for projects that involve both computer and non-computer work. In the great thing about Timing is that it provides clearly readable reports that I can attach to my client invoices. What makes Timing even better is that he works in the background, which means I don't have to in most cases start and stop the timing, because Timing does that for me. It took me a while to figure out how to best use Timing, but after a little bit of trial and error I'm using without any problems.

Cons

I can't think of any significant cons about Timing. The user interface is not the most modern design, and for many people it might not be very intuitive without reading the written instructions or watching a few instructional videos.

### "This takes my brain out of the equation for tracking my time"

November 2, 2018

5.0

I can't even calculate how much extra money this app has made me this year, I'm able to quickly and accurately bill customers for the exact work I've done with 100% confidence. I don't want to tell them this, but I'd pay way more for this software. I have and will continue to recommend it to people as the go-to time tracking software. I've tried so many other time tracking 'solutions' from writing things on paper (my previous best experiment, sad to say) to clicking a button whenever I stop/start a new task and I could never stay with anything for very long because I'd get started on a new task, get interrupted by a phone call or email or something else and end up with wildly inaccurate totals.

Pros

It is constantly working in the background -- I don't have to remember to stop and start timers and/or go back at the end of the day and remember what I did 8 hours ago. Now that it syncs between my desktop and laptop, it's almost invaluable. The rules that automatically file tasks in the correct folders mean that even reviewing my time from the previous day barely takes any time at all.

Cons

There are still a few hidden things that make it have a bit of a learning curve -- I've been using it for almost a year and it seems like I'm still learning things about it that I didn't know.

### "Exceptional mac experience that the current trend of ugly cross platform apps cannot touch"

March 6, 2018

5.0

\- measure your progress - track performance and habits - project management

Pros

\- native Mac app (thank you!!!! I really do not like the current trend of slow and ugly web apps/ electron apps.) - well made - good design, good user experience, and super fast because it is native - works offline no need to send anyone the data - you can backup your data if you want - fellow indie project - current project with regular updates - it just works - lots of features and configurations - you don't need a manual or a video to use this app... it is intuitive... just give it a shot!

Cons

\- my only con is/was the price tiers. I bought my version from a reseller during Black Friday Sale without consulting the actual website. It turns out, there are 3 different price tiers and I did not know that during the purchasing of the app. It did not leave a good feeling for me but I know there was a miscommunication somewhere in the marketing. So... make sure to check features of the app and buy the version of software that you want

### "Best Time Record Keeping Software for Mac"

January 11, 2020

5.0

Overall I really enjoy using this and it gives me a good and complete record of my past work (at least in relation to what I do on the computer, other things on my calendar and the things I record manually. I have been using Timing for 2 years now and have really accurate and up to date records, without too much hassle. I have always struggled with other software to record my time consitently over a longer period but with Timing those days seem in the distant past.

Pros

Timing is great. It automatically records what you are doing on your Mac, displays all of that in a visually appealing and pleasing way and gives you options to analyze the data. At the end of the day you end up with a long list of apps you have used, documents you opened and the times during which they were front and centre on your screen. You can set up projects and sub-projects and sort your activities into them. This process can be automated to a certain degree. When you walk away from your desk (or just not use your mac) for a little bit, the app will ask you what you did so you can record that manually. There is also a mobile website you can use to record activies away from the computer that way. If you pay for a higher tier you also get the option to display calendar appointments which you can easily import as a timing record. You further receive apple script capabilities to automate some aspects of the app/recording your activitites. The maker of Timing is super-responsive to emails and very friendly. Its fun to make suggestions and see them become part of the product!

Cons

Not all apps let timing pick up the details of what happens inside the app. When I edit a MS Word document or a note in Evernote, I get all the details (document / note name etc.) but when I use Whatsapp for web, I have no record of who I was chatting with. But I think this is due to restrictions in the OS or the app in question and Timing can't do anything about it. The mobile website to add activities when not at the computer is a good addition, but a fully featured mobile app would really complement the mac application (where you can look at anaylitics and sort recorded activities into projects, and more).

Response from Timing

January 13, 2020

Hello, Thank you for the friendly review! Timing indeed can't "look inside the browser" to track who you are chatting with in WhatsApp for Web. However, when you install WhatsApp for Mac, Timing should be able to track your chats. If tracking WhatsApp for Mac does not work for you, please feel free to reach out so we can investigate the issue :-) Best Regards, Daniel Alm Founder, Timing

### "Timing takes time to setup but afterwards helps you understand your time perfectly!"

April 2, 2018

5.0

I used to think I was a super busy guy who did not have time for all the troubles of life. But, after tracking my time on this software for the past month+, I have come to realize that I spend more of my time in passive enjoyment like browsing the web or watching youtube instead of actively enjoying activities like reading a book or playing sports. This realization has helped me understand why I felt so busy and unhappy: because I was spending all my "free time" on things that did not make me happy, so I kept spending more and more time to relax without any progress, which lead to me not putting enough time into my work. Now I try to spend most of my time either enjoying high-quality, fun activities or doing focused work, nothing in between.

Pros

\- Very reliable - Doesn't crash, ever - Always tracking time - Very colorful UI with good visualization mechanisms - Customizable - Detail-oriented - Trial is so long you will 100% by the end whether you like it or not

Cons

\- Pricing maybe a bit too high, but the time invested into this and the fact that it's not subscription based like a lot of other premium software justifies it. - Takes some up front time to setup the different projects and what key words/tasks automatically associate with what projects. After that, it's smooth sailing. - Very, very MINOR: A lot of manual reassignment of activities need to be done from project to project if you use one piece of software or website for many projects. This is just a limitation of the program being simple enough for users and having a very straightforward "if it contains these words put it into this project." The problem arises when one word fits into multiple projects, but in certain situations the task maps to the wrong project. This is a con, but is something that should be expected since I can't think of any software in the world that can do something like that. Fixing this problem might lie in some Machine Learning applications :) So this trade off arises in order to increase the ease of use for users in my opinion!

### "Tracks time spent, applications used and more"

August 25, 2022

5.0

Pros

I love that this software tracks all I do, and when, while using any applications on my computer. I do not always remember to start the timer when I am working between clients, but I can go back and see what I was doing and on what application, along with for how long, afterwards. I use it for multiple clients to track my time, and the time clock is great, too, bc you can add in what you are doing. I also like that you can set shortcuts for starting and stopping the clock and edit any entry if needed, and even add an entry after the fact.

Cons

I do not like that sometimes I will see "unknown activity" as a description for what I was doing, when all applications I use have titles of either documents, emails, files, etc. However, the benefits FAR outweigh that little annoyance.

### "Phenomenal Resource for Productivity"

October 2, 2018

5.0

Because of I'm timing, I'm able to first see just how productive I am. I didn't think I was that productive during the day, but I'm realizing I am more productive than I thought. I'm also noticing I'm staying on track more than I was before. I won't go to social media to goof off because I know it's "watching." I also love that it keeps track of everything for me because I've used other programs before where I had to manually go in and start/stop and edit things and honestly, I'd tell a little white to the program (and myself) that I was "productive" the entire time. That's not helping me. This program doesn't really allow for it -- I mean, I know I can, but I don't because of the automaticity. I love this program and I don't even know all of the FULL benefits yet (I just upgraded to expert-- SO EXCITED!). Thank you so much for creating this program!

Pros

There are so many things I love about this software that I don't even know where to start. I love how it helps me stay on track with what I'm doing during the day, increases my productivity, and see what areas I need to focus on more. It's incredibly easy to use and has so many various ways to analyze your data. I also love that it runs automatically for me instead of requiring me to start it myself. In other programs, I'd forget.

Cons

There really are no cons. The only thing I can think of is at first it seems overwhelming, but Timing took care of that by providing tutorials that were short and helpful. The less than one minute things are sometimes annoying because I'm not sure where to sort them.

### "This fantastic little app has saved me so many times!! Great for freelancers who bill by the hour!"

April 25, 2018

5.0

It makes sure I get paid for my work!

Pros

Works painlessly and silently behind the scenes - I don't know it's there until I suddenly find I need to know what I was doing and for how long on a given day two weeks ago. No nag dialogs, no remembering to start a timer or notate something, just tells you in extreme detail what you did and when you did it. Very flexible reporting.

Cons

I still don't quite get some of the rule-setting and how those rules interact with the various apps, but really, I could just use this with it's default settings out of the box and it does what I need.

It's beneficial to use this application if you are looking for automatic time tracking. Since I bought this application I don't bother about filling up work timesheets daily, I can do it at the very end of the month because all data is stored inside the app.

Pros

It's super convenient to use this app. It precisely measures how much time you spend using any of your apps.

Cons

Some of the apps do not support Timing, so you are not able to track what you've been doing by window titles. It is troublesome. Apps like: Franz

### "An Indispensable App for Busy Professionals"

September 20, 2018

5.0

At the end of every day, I'm able to look through my Timing records and update my company's internal time tracking system with the appropriate tasks. Because I'm a busy team leader, I get called to so many questions, tasks, and meetings that I struggle to keep track of everything I did during the day. This tool is the solution to that problem, allowing me to see all the programs I was using and remember where my time went throughout the day so I can update the appropriate customer accounts. It even asks you what you were doing when you return to your computer, allowing you to quickly log that last meeting, etc.

Pros

I have tried many of these kinds of "background" time tracking programs and none of them have gotten it right like Timing does. I live that Timing provides a timeline of what you were doing at any given time. Many other programs track that information, but they don't provide a clean and easy-to-use interface so you can see that. I'm also thrilled that Timing has AppleScript support so I can export my data in the format I need.

Cons

Sometimes if I step away from my desk for a few minutes and come back, the "what were you doing" notification is a bit annoying, but it's a minor disturbance compared to the value provided by the software.

### "This is an amazing product, a killer app for productivity and time tracking freaks."

March 27, 2018

5.0

Pros

This is a very powerful tool, I would be hard pressed to identify what it may be lacking. I switched to Timing from an equivalent online tool that would upload data into their servers, so obviously keeping my data on my machine only is a great bonus for privacy. The user interface is not only detailed and thorough, it is also well-designed and engaging. Customer support has also proved to be excellent. It's a very deep app and I am just scratching the surface of what it can provide me, yet it is already a great help.

Cons

The learning curve is a bit steep, but that price is well worth the payoff in the end. In the latest version of the app (v2), it took me a while to set up all my automatic filters and rules. But I have had a good setup going for a few months now and it is proving very useful for tracking my time and seeing exactly what I am doing and when.

### "The best time tracking software for Mac"

March 6, 2018

5.0

I became more productive and got a better sense of time while working on my tasks. So intuitively I avoid to waste my time on distracting apps and websites. Now I have thorough reports about apps usage. What's properly measured can be improved.

Pros

\- Nice and consistent UI - Smart grouping of activities by their type - Useful statistics - Easy to use and powerful reporting - Ability to set up pomodoro-like workflow - Ability to adjust time tracks, which can be useful if one forgot to switch to a proper task in time, or forgot to top task tracking. - The data is stored locally and sensitive information about your apps used, web pages visited and chats opened does not leak.

Cons

\- Way too many default smart projects and that is a bit confusing for beginners - Sometimes I forget to resume activity tracking while a quick task is started, so the information about apps usage gets lost. Probably, some notification would help here.

### "Timing has greatly improved my productivity"

December 3, 2018

5.0

Pros

The software is very intuitive and easy to use. It "trains" very quickly in a few days of use and then it is extremely accurate logging where you spend your time. This has allowed me to focus on the work that I should be doing and delegate or avoid the tasks and activities that are not productive. I use the software across 4 MacOS computers and the synchronization is flawless across the machines.

Cons

The only thing missing from this software is a client for iOS. That would complete my list.

### "Timing is a really fantastic app for keeping track of your time if you work on a computer all day"

March 2, 2018

5.0

There's a lot of benefits to using this software but I particularly like how I can use this software to take a data-driven approach to my productivity. It really does keep my honest.

Pros

Timing keeps me honest. I'm a software engineer and I work on a computer all day. I love how Timing tracks what applications I'm using, what websites I'm visiting, and for how long. It does a mediocre job at automatically categorizing things into productive or not but I like that I can also choose to categorize certain activities as productive or unproductive (e.g. visiting Facebook!) on my own. Timing is also really nice for remembering what you did the day before, week before ,etc. I can't tell you how many times I forget what I did the day before. With Timing it's very easy to look back and see. Lastly, I like that I can use Timing to have a data-driven approach to productivity. While some time spent may not be considered unproductive, it can be considered a less-than-ideal use of time. It's nice to be able to look back and see areas where I can optimize my time.

Cons

The learning curve is a bit steep at first. To be honest, I still haven't learned all of the features. I also wish there was a way to set what days and times it should track. If I'm using my computer on the weekend or after hours, I don't want to include that in my overall tracking. Maybe there is a way but I'm just not familiar with it.

September 25, 2018

5.0

It's quite pricey, especially for the Expert version, but it's worth it if you want a lot of control and power. Take the time to learn the features and set up rules, and you'll get a lot of value from it.

Pros

\- Many different ways to categorize time - Super powerful custom rules (including regex) - Easy automatic rules (option-drag a keyword, path, etc. to a category and it remembers it for the future) - Nice visualizations to see patterns - Very powerful reporting options - Scriptable with AppleScript - It syncs across macs

Cons

\- Making reports is a little confusing (there are a lot of options and it's not always obvious what they do) - When I'm categorizing time, I have to switch back and forth between the Review and Details tabs - It would be nice to have calendar integration so I could include and categorize events

### "It just works!"

March 27, 2018

5.0

Pros

I'm a freelancer and I was looking for a good program that could track the amount of time I devote to each project. I found Timing and I can say it's the best solution out there. When they say that it tracks automatically your work, it simply does! Just spend some minutes setting up some rules and how productive your activities are, and the system will do all its magic in the background. The layout is beautiful and you can easily get a summary of how you spent your time today. An absolutely great solution, very nice looking app, and outstanding support! Highly recommended!

Cons

None so far. They had an issue with tracking programs when you were in fullscreen, but I contacted them and they fixed it.

### "Important tool even if you're not a professional"

October 22, 2018

4.0

Not only I'd advice timing for the professional who has to bill for a project, but also for who works on a product or for a company and in the busiest time forgets to track hours.

Pros

You don't have to do anything. Timing just tracks your time. If you like you could customise behaviours and rules to best match your work.

Cons

Sometimes its interface is not super intuitive.
