Comments: TM1 allows you to build business models that display online results available to all authorized users of the organization.

Pros: IBM Cognos TM1 facilitates the creation of business models with the participation and contribution of users throughout the organization regardless of their physical location. TM1 is a enterprise-level platform that allows an integral, flexible, rigorous and perfect control over the users that contribute with the creation of the budget. It allows building multidimensional models that incorporate the business rules that govern the financial processes of the company.

Cons: IBM Cognos TM1 needs to train personnel to administer the platform. The construction of the models requires specialized IT staff. The cost of the licenses is for medium and large companies.

Pros: Easy to use, easily connects to many ERP softwares.
Houses budgeting and planning, financial reporting and dashboarding and metrics all in one suite.

Cons: Requires in-house administration, is not an out of the box software and requires monthly maintenance on the reports and the planning applications.

Comments: My company has been using IBM Cognos for the past 4 years. When we purchased IBM Cognos it was the best fit for our situation. It has been a valued piece of software in our business. It has given us the ability to tie data from multiple data sources. It has given the ability for our departments to run reports that we haven't been able to in the past.

Pros: The software is very intuitive. If you have knowledge of SQL, it is a very easy software to pick up. The Help portion of the Cognos interface is very helpful also.

Cons: Customer Support for this product isn't the best. We have been on Cognos 10.1.1 for a while and when it came up for licensing renewal, we were charged for a newer version of Data Manger. When we inquired about this through our support contract we were going to be charged for the new software.

Comments: Our agency has used cogging for two years and has found it to be very user-friendly. It has the capability of generating training certificates for our employees and has a wide variety of training available. We have found the price to be very reasonable for what our agency needed to a training site. We would recommend this product.

Pros: I like the ability to create reports on the fly.

Cons: I do not have any dislikes other than the staged rollout of pieces of my prior firm's datamart.

Pros: Easily integrating with most of the ERPs, very good for customizing reports, very detailed reporting

Cons: Tough to learn & not many resources available, you will get the value of the money invested in it only if you are able to get the most out of it

Overall: I used Cognos as an analytical tool by linking our ERP (Microsoft Dynamic NAV) to it. All the financial data would be mapped & a lot of customized reports were taken out like Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA). The user interface is pretty good. The CUBEs are little confusing but once you get the grip they work very well. The ability to drill down the reports to very basic level is a plus point
A little tough to learn & customize. It's a little slow when dealing with a medium amount of data.

Recommendations to other buyers: Go for it only if your organisation is huge & you need an additional reporting tool apart from your ERP

Pros: The ability to create custom reports makes it user friendly for anyone to figure out

Cons: the cubes tend to be confusing for file storage

Overall: I utilize Cognos for dashboard and custom reports and the ease of creating and storing reports is fairly simple. The organization of files is a bit confusing and the ability of seeing other employee folders tends to be complication for sharing. The availability to send out reports is much easier though.

Recommendations to other buyers: Enable a formal organizing platform to make finding files to share easier to use

Comments: Cognos was great for controlling the FP&A budget being used and having it update in real-time for a number of users to use. Could add ease of copying and pasting within to enhance the product.

Cons: System does run slow at times when multiple users are editing a number of workbooks or sheets within the workbook.

Comments: Cognos has performed splendidly, met and went well past our expectations. We use it for modeling, budgets, and forecasts. We exist in a sector with a lot volatility, so being flexible is everything.The architecture of the application can be tiered nicely for performance. This allows us to scale the application to support our growing user base. Cognos' mobile features are mature and we do use that as well.

Cons: Expensive product comparatively with other latest BI products in the market and revolving around BIG DATA.

Comments: Cognos makes it easy to design reports that match the look-and-feel required by the client. Report rendering time is also very fast. Browser support can be touchy and Dynamic Cubes are very hardware intensive.Cognos has strong out of the box capabilities with a wide array of add-ons, and good interoperability with other IBM analytics and data suites

Pros: Compatibility mode queries allow for custom ODBC and JDBC connection to made, so even if there is no native compatibility other databases can still be used as a source if needed. Dynamic Cubes are capable of querying against millions of rows in seconds when properly set up with sufficient hardware resources. Standard Reports are snappy, returning data and rendering quickly, as long as the pagination is kept to reasonable quantities.

Cons: Due to Active Reports packaging all of the data in the file and prerendering charts, file size can get quite large (easily several megabytes) and the initial load time can be quite long when opening it. It is best used for basic overviews and other times when some "flash" is needed, but not a large amount of data. Configuring the interoperability with TM1 and SPSS is a little more on the technical side than most other tasks. You could call the development process "Front heavy" meaning most of the development will be modeling. This means that it will take longer to end up with visualized data than other tools.

Recommendations to other buyers: Cognos has a robust set of capabilities out of the box with a wide array of add-ons and interoperability with other IBM analytics and data suites. IBM provides plentiful whitepapers, redbooks, and other information resources for clients and developers, as well as excellent technical support. Combined with a proper balance between ease of use and customization when developing and an affordable licensing model, Cognos was a superb choice.

Comments: I did not like the experience with this tool, I needed to develop a dashboard and it was really complex for me, it was not intuitive like other BI's that I've used, the interface looks old, probably it's because I'm used to work with newer technologies and Cognos seems to be in the past and it require more time in learning curve

Pros: Even when I did not use the OLAP connection I know is posible to do it and its a good advantage against other BI's, it has a great caipability to support big data models and for reporting purposes is a fine alternative. As an enterprise solution it will provide all the scalability and secutity that you'll need.

Cons: The process to develop a dashboard was not as quickly as I can do it with other tools, personaly it was not a pleasent experience, I'll have to spend more time and continue using it to see if eventually I find it better.

Recommendations to other buyers: Analyze very well the purpose of usage and cost for it, the price is a factor to consider and specialy if you are a small - medium business.

Comments: Cognos is one of 2 major Business Intelligence tools on the market. If it is implemented correctly, it could provide complete web-based business solution based on the data analysis. It is a platform which allowing to deliver mission critical analytics to the business including but not limited to Enterprise reporting, Planning & Forecast, OLAP cubes technology, etc.

Pros: - The application designed to enable business users with limited technical knowledge to extract data, analyze it and make business decision based on the analysis; - It could be used within relational or multidimensional data sources; - It is included a mobile version allowing users to access a complete version of Cognos from mobile devices;

Cons: - very sensitive in implementation; - requiring significant resources in order to maintain and support; - too expensive for mid-size companies;

Pros: What I like best about Cognos BI is the ability to use the Analytics reports to easily create whatever kind of analytical view I want and to change it on the fly. It is so easy to use. The Cube dimensions, levels, categories, and measures give me the power that I need to run any report I want and to create new ones as the business changes.

Cons: There is a lot to the installation of this product, but it's worth it.
