Pros: The important feature of Edsby is Gradebook Functionality and the presence of Curriculum expectation.

Cons: We cannot have a customized setup, and does not have integration with Google calendar. We are facing lots of challenges with Parents sign in and admin login.

Pros: Meets our government regulatory compliance requirements. Awesome gradebook. Solid report cards. Pulls parent contact information, student contact information, teacher contact information, rooms and schedules from our SIS nightly. Changes are not updated in real time, but are updated within one day.

Cons: New features and updates are rolled out seemingly at the last minute. (ie 7pm notification of an overnight upgrade). Does not match the school year. Pull integration only with our SIS. Rigid roles. Parent account creation for parents that we want to authenticate with AD is problematic. Support department is only 2 people. Attendance is difficult. Does not allow users with multiple roles, ie teacher who is also a parent. Developments don't necessarily match school year. Lacks a threaded discussion board. Planning does not support backwards design. Calendars do not at this point have iCal feeds. No internal auditing of planned absences, so if a planned absence exists for a group or a class, if there is a change in the enrollment of the group or class, the planned absence is not modified for the user who changed enrollment. No list of known issues.

Overall: Custom report cards. 3rd party LMS instead of internal LMS.

The software needs to work better on the mobile app.

Pros: The ability to review my child's grades at all times is very convenient. I also like being able to contact teachers from the mobile app.

Cons: The mobile app doesn't work as well as it could. PDF documents are not able to be viewed on the app. I also hav had issues sending messages to teachers. The interface will be off and you cannot see parts of the message. I have had to go to the main site at times to send messages since because the app doesn't work

Pros: Designed with Ontario curriculum in mind which makes it more responsive to our local needs. It is user friendly and parents seem to enjoy the communication options. We like the group options as well as the attendance.

Cons: Still need to do some work with providing opportunity to effectively document learning skills. The software has become too expensive for smaller schools.

Pros: Communication with parents, students, and staff is easy. I use the calendar daily in order to make note of due dates and provide message reminders regularly. Having an outlet to post important documents is also highly valued.

Cons: Seeing student marks is challenging; the print versions are poor as printing marks are not visible and print templates lack space to write information. Viewing data could also be more user friendly. It would be nice for learning skills from Report 1 to remain in place for Report 2 as well.

Overall: Communication.

Pros: The ease of use and ability to create numerous pages and groups. In addition, the report card and assessment tracking system is all we could ask for. Finally, the privacy settings and ability to invite and block certain groups is seamless which is very important for a school

Cons: As many areas in education constantly evolve, so does the need for shifting the way we do things online. Edsby doesn't always have stock items already built into the software; so, occasionally we need to ask them to create it for us. However, they are always responsive and get this done in a timely manner

Overall: An online community for our school.

The software centralizes many tasks to streamline the administrative functions in education.

Pros: I like the sense of community and transparency that comes with the steady stream of information on a daily basis.

Cons: It's busy - there is a lot going on and it's not always fast to access what one needs to find. Results in a lot of clicking to get there.

Overall: I am able to be in the know with my colleagues and students (and, conversely, keep necessary individuals in the know from my end).

Pros: I like having the ability to give my students easy access to documents. I also like the ability to control student and parent access.

Cons: There are very few cons, but one thing I find frustrating is access my student documents once they submit. It is fairly time consuming, especially if you have a slow server.

Overall: Quick results to see if students turned in assignments. The ability to communicate and message students when they need help.

Pros: It has everything in one: class lists, marking, calculating, parent communication, groups for student communication, at a glance information.

Cons: I kept may marks on Edsby and had a student move away out of province. His profile immediately disappeared. When there were questions and issues about his marks from the new school, I was unable to provide history. When I wrote for support, I received no response.

Pros: Students really enjoyed the wall. They sent messages about home learning. We had some amazing sharing about plants that were started at school and continued to grow at home. I also loved being able to share files online. Saved on photocopying.

Cons: Wish it would send out notifications.
Wish it would sync with report card program.
Students are not able to easily put things in their portfolios the way they can in Seesaw.

Overall: Easier tracking of grades and curriculum.

Edsby has been a great communication tool. I am able to keep both parents and students informed.

Pros: The all-in-one functionality of Edsby is most helpful. Grade book, attendance, announcements, calendar, parent and student records/communication, seating plans, library of course material and bulletins for overarching course goals.

Cons: The Library does not serve me. I have to reupload my course material every time I teach the course, even if I'm teaching the same course twice in the same semester. I have to delete auto-posted files from the feed that end up in the library otherwise it will become quickly over-run, confusing and ineffective as a communicative tool.

Overall: This software merges all platforms a teacher could use into one, easy to use, succinct tool.

Pros: The fact parents can see their children's grades realtime, while the data is safe and secure. Simplicity of use, and a shallow navigation learning curve.

Cons: Just a thought: having your own or preferred backend for the data for schools starting to work with Edsby for the first time.

Overall: Knowing that parents can view their child's progress realtime. This reduces the costs of time and resources of the front office staff of looking up the student's data / progress and keeping paper copies of records for years beyond.

Pros: Love the ability to:
- connect with teachers
- see homework & due dates
- see extra learning materials
- child being able to hand homework in

Cons: I find navigation not always easy to do to find teachers or materials.
I've tried to message a teacher to ask a question but had to look for an old email to reply to it instead of starting a new thread of conversation
I'd appreciate it being very easy for my child to look up their schedule and what school day they are on for the upcoming dates
Practice materials would be SO awesome to have sinc KPDSB doesn't like their students having homework in the Primary grades - afraid of parents doing the homework -- understandable but then my child comes home with results less than their capability without having some practice to help understand the materials. Thanks

Overall: Better way to communicate with teachers to ensure messages get back and forth and can have a few communications before the child even gets home from school

Pros: There is a chance for technological support. They will try to answer your questions and solve your problems. They do not always come up with a solution right away.

Cons: I find that I have to scroll down to do anything because the boxes you need to fill out for the journal entries are too big to fit on a screen. When you make an entry in the journal the first time you need to reopen it to add a unit title...a strange waste of time. When you print off marks, seating plans etc they are WAY too small for most people to see. A seating plan with pictures needs to be big enough to see the faces! Seating plans for split courses cannot be blended together...so they are useless.

I feel like this software is not helpful to me in an elementary classroom.

Pros: I like that I can easily share with parents, and often treat EDSBY like a blog so that parents can see what we are doing day to day. I like that I can share websites and assignments with students, but I can easily do this in a Google Classroom as well. I like the seating plan option for supply teachers. I also like that teachers can create calendars and schedule events through EDSBY.

Cons: The markbook does not make sense to me in an elementary classroom. It's not easy for students to add pictures of their work unless they post it for everyone to see. The weights of the assignments don't work for me.

Pros: The communication aspect with home in that parents and students are made aware of the students' academic progress, and kept up to date with the students' daily life.

Pros: The program is visual and easy to use.
There is an APP so students have easy access to information AND less paper is required eg. homework handouts, timetables. etc.
The parents can easily access their child's school information (attendance, marks, etc.)

Cons: One can't do a search within the posts in a group
Information doesn't always sync correctly from our main database.

Overall: Easily accessible information by teachers, students and parents.

Frances, you can indeed search inside an Edsby group or class. Enter the group or class, and type what you're searching for in the box at the top of the page in the main nav bar. It will search through all the posts in that area first and then the rest of Edsby.

It does some cool extras but has lost some basic necessities.

Pros: User friendly and intuitive. It's a great communication tool to connect with parents, too, as they can see feedback. I like that I can make observations about students and record anecdotal notes.

Cons: Uploading documents to attach to lesson plans rarely works--I often type a whole lesson and then when I try to attach resources it doesn't work and I have to eventually close and then my lesson isn't saved. I don't like that I can't print my lessons, either. I've asked several times for this to be an option.

Overall: Better communication with parents and students and more timely feedback. Helps me build a better portfolio on each student so I can look at the whole picture during reporting.

Pros: I like the fact that I can communicate with students and parents in terms of due dates, test dates, missed work (I post what I do in class everyday and attach any assignments), as well as progress in the course (missing assignments, marked assignments, etc.).

Cons: I don't like how I can't enter multiple mark sets at time. I also wish there were attendance sheets with dates at the top (not the blank mark sheets). I also wish we could make our own names for what goes in the mark bucket (the drop-down list is good, but I wish I could choose the names of some of my items - example: "Fitness" for phys ed class). I wish there was a save function for report carding because I've had it happen where I've lost my internet connection and therefore, lost my recent comments for students.

Overall: Online test option, seating plan, calendar function, student and parent communication, attaching files/assignments for absent students, due dates, etc.

Pros: I like the organization of the Course plan as I appreciate the daily record of my notes and resources. I appreciate the interactive aspect of the wall for classroom participation. It's helpful that handouts can be posted to reduce photocopy waste especially since students often interact comfortably with online text.

Cons: The online platform that I used to use for my class website was a lot more visually appealing.
The Grade book aspect is a little not-userfriendly and has less functionality that the previous program I used. I would REALLY appreciate the ability to separate formative assessment from summative. For example, I like to use the online multiple choice questions the gauge their thinking as we go; however, when I am looking at their marks, I do not want them to be included. It is significant enough that I will either stop using the online quizzes or I will choose another software for keeping track of marks.

Overall: The best part for me is the Course Plan with the daily organization allowing me to include PPTs, videos, notes, etc...

Pros: I like that parents have the ability to be as involved as they want in what is happening at their child's school. It is easy to use, from an administrative perspective, and also from a parent perspective. Students have the ability to stay up to date on all their work, even if they are away. They are able to communicate with their teachers and the administrators of their school.

Cons: I had a few issues with the classes not having room numbers last year, but that was quickly resolved! As of this moment, there isn't anything I would change.

Pros: It's pretty easy to use. Similar layout to Facebook, which most parents are familiar with. Students can login pretty easily and get around.

Cons: Tech glitches: signing on via iphone app, parents being able to post replies to posts, parents getting personal messages sent, etc.

Overall: Keeping parents informed quickly and easily. I try to post photos every day.

Thanks, Adrianna. Re: some of your probs, are you using the latest version of the Edsby apps? And did you know parents can participate in your classes and reply to posts if you let them? In the Edsby class setup form, under Class Options, the Parents pull-down menu includes an option to let parents "enter class and participate."

This program has been a great help to me! Easy to learn and the constant support is amazing!

Pros: I love how it easy it is to assess students as class progresses! All the information in one place is amazing!

Cons: I wish there was a check list function where I can select several students for the same observation. OR if I could create a check list of students achieving the same expectation instead of selecting individual students.

Overall: Constant feedback for students.

I use it for attendance - struggle to figure out how to use it for much else.

Pros: I like that it has pictures of the students. There seems to be lots of uses but can't figure out how to set it up for my program

Pros: I like very little about the software. If I was reaching for a reason, it would be that the product is a communication tool and gradebook in one. That is all...oh, and the customer service.

Cons: Edsby is unreliable. My students can use it sometimes, and not others. The app is completely useless. I wonder why it exists. If I have to use this, I wonder why it is not working 100%...or even 50%.
I hate how I reach customer service and they listen politely then make a great excuse as to why the point in my email to them was chosen not to function that way.
The previous software that we used worked. Edsby has made us step backwards and, therefore, creates more work in the long run.
I do not want my spare time used in trouble-shooting software. There's fun to be had.

Overall: If it wasn't so much of a pain, it would have all things in one place.

I've been using Edsby for 3yrs now and I find it far better than EdLine or BlackBoard

Pros: Communication. With parents, students, collegues and clubs. Having a central hub for communication has been amazing.

Cons: I would like the gradebook to be more transparent and have a bit more functionallity wrt weighting. Also, it can be a little frustrating uploading images, and the library doesn't give enough information about the files I've stored in it.

There was a learning curve and I feel that I will continue to use this piece of software for certain

Pros: Gradebook, and the seating plan function. the attendance feature is great as well because you can send in your attendance from anywhere.

Cons: This is not a good piece of tech to use as a primary communication tool. Parents do not like to have to Log In to get information from it. They prefer Apps like Remind and the good old student agenda.

Overall: Easy calculation of student grades as well as ease in matching assessments to expectations.

Pros: I like that 'everything" is in one place.
I like that communication with parents (theoretically) is streamlined.

Cons: I hate the gradebook. It is inflexible and does not give me the information I want.
I don't like that every change is communicated so precisely to parents (for example if I change a grade, it adds a comment - isn't changing the grade enough? I can add a comment if I want to.)
I don't like that each item gives parents the percent it is worth out of the total. It takes away from my professional judgement and allows parents and students to calculate their overall percent which is something our board has opted NOT to tell parent.s

Overall: everything is now in one place.
the privilege of spending way more time entering marks and calculating final percentages

Cynthia, did you know you don't HAVE to share grades, averages or weightings with parents in Edsby? It's up to you. Select the options you'd like in each classes' setup form. Enter the class, and click the setup option in the top menu. Your district has chosen some options consistent with their overall policy, but you as a teacher still get flexibility to exercise your professional judgement.

Comments: It would be nice to be able to send messages to selected groups of students within a class. Currently I can only post a message to the entire class on the home page, or send individual email messages to students or families.

Pros: Available online and as an app - very portable. Prompt customer support. Email notification when someone has sent a message.

Cons: Grade calculations are sometimes wonky, particularly at the beginning of the marking period. Messages are forwarded to email, but cannot be answered from there.

Pros: Teachers can take attendance and send it to the office easily. I like being able to send messages to students and parents.

Cons: It is hard to find a thread of conversation in messages and I am not able to forward a message to someone or add a person to the conversation thread. It is sometimes difficult to maneuver from student to student when comparing or updating information. The same for parents.

Overall: As the Academic Administrative Assistant, I find that Edsby is a great office tool for communicating to parents, students and staff.

Recommendations to other buyers: Sometimes I feel like there is too much information to look at and filter through. I need to learn how to centralize some of the main information. I find that when teams or groups are planning to be away they communicate with themselves and not always with the Academic Office and I have to search for the information.

Thanks for the comments, Jim! Re: not seeing grades from the last quarter, your school district modified Edsby to hide previous quarter results by default. Pros: Keeps me touch and keeps my son on his toes.

Cons: Smome teachers don't take advantage of all that Edsby has to offer. Some are very slow on inputting assignments and grades.

Overall: Edsby is very useful when you're not sure if your child is telling you about her network assignments, upcoming tests, and grades. It creates another link between teacher and parent that's available 24/7,

Recommendations to other buyers: Find a way to make it more friendly for teachers to be timely in entering information. Encourage teachers and students to use Edsby as a tool in conveying assignments and reminders. Maybe a check box when you've completed an assignment or note your progress on a long term project. A spot where a student can indicate something they're having problems understanding.

Pros: Everything

Cons: There is nothing that I don't like about it.

Overall: I am very thankful for Edsby. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone on to take a look at my son's grades and been upset because of something he didn't turn in. Well thanks to the ease of use of Edsby, I could easily look up the assignment and print it out, along with the list of grades for each class to keep my son on top of his work and grades. Even in HS, it has proven to be a valuable tool as now he is at a stage in which he communicates as little as possible with me. It is fun to know his grades before I ask him. The program is fairly easy to use, but could be a bit harder for someone with no computer skills, but overall I love it!

Recommendations to other buyers: You should use it if you can. It is a very helpful tool. It is most helpful when it is used to its fullest potential by both the teachers and parents!

Pros: Helping kids organize their assignments and work schedules.

Cons: The app is in need of upgrades and certain glitches are left for too long at times making it difficult to sell people on.

Overall: Although there are always some kinks to work out Edsby is a useful tool for both educators and students, however, it needs a full adoption in order for the true benefits to take effect. I look forward to the continued improvements.

Pros: Easy to use and view all schoolwork. Stay on top of my children's daily work and know what their grades are.

Cons: When you open an individual class it will not allow you to view the graph and assignments at the same time. Instead you have to go back to the class to open them individually. It makes viewing much slower. It would be easier if once at the class you could view both.

Overall: My children have been using Edsby in their elementary, middle and high school for several years now. It is easy to keep up with their school work, upcoming assignments, tests and grades. It is helpful when they are absent since teachers usually post their daily work. It has been a great tool to stay up to date with their progress in each class.

Recommendations to other buyers: Have a missing work section besides the ungraded section so you can follow up with your child and teacher if the work was done and handed in. Often, the ungraded section, is used by the teachers when they haven't graded an assignment. It would be helpful to have a missing work/test section so you can stay on top of it easily and make sure that all work gets done or handed in. This would be especially useful after absences of multiple absences in a row.

Pros: Gradebook and communication features - the link to Trillium and student information for ease of access for the information

Cons: * ability to print for students who do not have technology at home
* taking a photo
* being able to post to multiple classes when using an app

Overall: I personally find it easy to use - I enjoy all features (Grading, Planner, etc)

Suggestions
* possibility of printing agenda notes for students who don't have access to internet
* a way to "search" for messages and words in groups (e.g. staffroom)
* more functionality in the app (camera/photos, etc)
* a way to "define" standards when they are the same in certain subjects for split classes (e.g. less editing involved)
* key feature would be the printing option for agenda notes for students (mentioning it again as we have quite a few students who do not have internet at home - or who prefer a paper agenda... so making everyone happy if possible).

Thanks for the excellent customer service!

Overall: When we made the switch to Edsby, our parents and students felt that they were more informed and better equipped for success in the classroom. Cons: Unexpected changes - I know they get announced to us, and this is part of development
How cumbersome it can be for parents to create an account and link to their students
The mobile apps need upgraded in view and performance

Overall: Edsby is an excellent product, superior to any combination of communication-gradebook-class posting packages that are out there. There are many superb features - the gradebook, the report cards, the groups - and some areas where I know development is still working to improve - message facility, how to add clients easily, making Edsby more fun and whimsical for students. Overall, fantastic product that server our community well.

Recommendations to other buyers: Students would respond well to a feature in Edsby that had a measure of whimsy about it. Perhaps a growing flower if grades increase, or a happy stamp after a week of perfect attendance, or just a fun counter for how often a parent checks a child's Edsby classes.

Pros: Using Edsby has revolutionized my classroom! I use it to communicate with students and parents. I feel like Edsby helps my class become a real community.

Cons: The only thing I can think of is the mobile app can be a little buggy at times.

Pros: Edsby is easy to use if you've used any form of social media. It allows the user the flexibility of using it as a communication tool (blog and group/forum abilities), planner/organizer, assessment manager and tracker, and online file manager. The people at Edsby are listening to what educators are wanting and how they can help us manage our classrooms in an online blended learning environment. As our teachers and students become comfortable with its use, parents will be able to monitor their child's progress and activity in the class. A very powerful tool for helping the student find success.

Cons: There are some minor limits with regards to how Edsby fits with our board database (Trillium). Mostly with regards to merging classes with different sections. This has been promised to be resolved in the near future and judging by how Edsby has already implemented a lot of user requests, we feel confident it will be resolved in the near future.

Recommendations to other buyers: As per what our Board is doing, I would recommend testing out each feature as your comfort level allows. Starting with using Edsby as a communication tool with students, then test out planning lessons and assessment and getting students involved before giving parents access.

Comments: Introducing new technology to 15,500 teachers and over 200,000 students is not an easy task. Edsby has accomplished this amazing feat with incredible results! Parents have their own Edsby account where they can monitor all of their children in different schools and easily contact teachers. The mobile option is used extensively by parents and students alike. Edsby has made students, and their parents, responsible for their educational success.
Even the most non-technical teachers have accepted Edsby. Edsby trained several teachers at our school to assist with gradebook specific questions. Teachers feel comfortable asking their peers for assistance. The gradebook is flexible, intuitive and user friendly.
Edsby implementation wasn't without its hiccups. Most of the issues were related to the incredible volume of traffic experienced during the last days of the grading periods when everyone was updating their gradebooks and checking their grades. Edsby support worked around the clock to fix the issues. Edsby has implemented many changes suggested by teachers and administrators. As our second year with Edsby draws to a close, Edsby has become an integral part of our school.

Comments: Edsby has become a permanent fixture within my classroom. I teach Reading and Social Studies. With my students having access to iPads, it is very easy to upload documents and post them to the newsfeed area of the class page so that students can access the documents and complete tasks in the classroom as well as at home without having to acquire a paper copy of the required document. In addition, Edsby allows me as the teacher to input student grades and communicate with students in regards to their progress. I recommend Edsby as it will aid students in obtaining the necessary information so that they can become self-intiated learners.

Comments: We are into our third year of using Edsby as a learning management system. I will unequivocally say that it has become a critical and positive factor in the communication that happens in all of the curricular and extra-curricular life of our school. As a member of the administrative team that proposed buy-in to this LMS, there were challenges that normally occur when new technology is brought into the life of an organization. Start-up training was intensive but not overbearing, and I as well as every member of our staff have always felt that Edsby supports us well in resolving any difficulties.
The platform is flexible, intuitive, and easy to use. Teachers can customize their markbooks effectively and easily, and the process of mark entry is straight-forward. The tasks of posting homework and adding files to a class are intuitive. Extra-curricular groups can be created easily, and teachers, students, and parents have come to recognize both class and extra-curricular groups as primary and reliable places to find the latest information on the goings-on at school.
As the administrator in charge of academic reporting, I particularly value Edsby for the short turn-around time between entry of marks and comments, and publishing of reports. Students and parents have completely bought in to using this product on a daily basis, to access both homework and information on marks, and, although there were some early "kinks" associated with difficultly in accessing Edsby from mobile devices, Edsby helped all users resolve these difficulties effectively and quickly.
The only area that I see Edsby developing from its current form is the option of printing individual student reports in a concise and complete form. As Edsby has helped us to reduce the amount of paper we generate in producing reports, this is not a critical downfall, but simply an option that we would like to have available. Edsby has received feedback on this item from us, and has responded that they are working on it.

I would highly recommend Edsby as a learning management system to a colleague.

Terrible first year; more settled now, but difficult to overcome that legacy

Vendor Response

by Edsby on May 06, 2015

Dick makes a point. Back in September of 2012 when we deployed Edsby at our first two customers, Dick's University of Toronto Schools (UTS) and Toronto District Christian High School, we thought we had a good idea of what schools needed. And while we did have good stuff back then, we also learned what else we still needed to do. Over 90 enhancements to Edsby came directly from suggestions from those two customers, and now, three years and 500+ schools later, our product is better for it. From bucketed weighting to group-based planned absences, we heard and listened to their feedback, and we're doing that with customers still.

Edsby LMS - Best of Breed

Comments: Our school has been using Edsby for 3 years now - it is quite simply the best of breed when it comes to LMS portals. There is nothing I have seen that comes close to its power, simplicity of use, and - most importantly - educational effectiveness.

It integrates with our Blackbaud SIS, so pulls all student, teacher and parents into the cloud.
We have 100% uptake by our teaching faculty and students, our data shows that 65% of parents have logged in, representing 100% of our families (we have an average of 3 parent accounts per student).

We do our report cards, data analysis, and all daily class work and educational communication on Edsby. Specifically:
- All teachers post a "Daybook" showing what was done in class, with links to web sources, attachments etc, plus a list of "homework" to be completed. This running record forms the backbone of what students see and do. Students and parents are presented with this as their homepage, so they always know what went on in class and what to do for homework.
- All assignments, events etc automatically post to student calendars. Students can submit work directly back to Edsby.
- The Gradebook is the best out there. Handles pretty much any grading system imaginable, is very flexible and customizable, and produces awesome graphs etc showing student performance to students, parents, teachers and administrators, flagging overdue assignments, custom notes and observations etc.
- The Student Report Zoom automatically flags at-risk students (great for Administration and Grade Teams). Advisors can get instant summaries of student performance.
- Messages get pushed out to whatever email the parent and student register on the system
- It integrates with Google Docs
- Does attendance of course, including attendance resolution by the Office.
- The "Student Panorama" displays all of a student's information including Medical Alerts entered by our Health Centre, observations by teachers (for other teachers to see and use), attendance information, Academic probation alerts...
And we have built several custom Apps to track Community Service Hours, our own Diploma system which requires students to earn leadership points, engage in school groups, teams, and activities - all tracked through the Edsby report card system.

And all in a fast, friendly web browser.
