Pros

My favorite thing about Canopy is that everything, except for the return itself can be done in one space. Canopy is very user friendly. I like that Canopy is always looking for ways to provide more. The customer support is excellent, the response times are always quick. The file sharing option is very easy to use and I love the new document naming AI feature.

Cons

I do not like that so often the client portal tells our clients that they "do not exist" and they have to log out of the portal to fix this. It is an easy fix, however I feel the issue has lasted a long time and we experience the issue with our clients often.

User for 2+ years. It's been generally good and when asked about Practice Management tools to consider it's always one of the one's at the top of list.

Pros

All in one and continuing improvement and updates. The ability to pull and manage tax account transcripts is a unique practice management function.

Cons

Haven't found a great way for it to work as part of sales process tracking. It would also be nice to be able to pull reporting for tasks without users defined, no due dates, etc.

Good over the last 5 years, it has come a long way! Clients seem to love the portal and the ability to see all their documents securely.

Pros

Managing and organizing tasks and having the client portal in the same place. The ability to have tasks reoccur automatically is great!

Cons

Not having the ability to integrate invoicing into QBD, use a another payment processor in the program, and editing and then signing a PDF.

Overall, would highly recommend Canopy to other small cpa firm owners. The value you get for having most of the tech deck all in one spot cannot be beat! Plus it is pretty intuitive and has responsive CSR's. If you're not able to figure it out on your own, it also has a vibrant community where you are able to collaborate with others to find solutions and develop best practices.

Pros

The user-friendly interface makes Canopy a no brainer. I have worked at a large firm and clients much prefer using this for file sharing, making payments and having everything through one app.

Cons

As the company is still growing, there are still a lot of features being rolled out. I look forward to see them continue to roll out new items. I am looking forward to CRM API linking with CCH Axcess and their tax software so changes made in Canopy can be sent directly to Axcess vs. updating manually.

This has been a learning curve. The transition was difficult but once we started using it more it has been easier to function in.

Pros

I really like that we have turned 5 different programs into one place. The ability for the clients to have a portal is the best.

Cons

Time entry screen and the dates not staying the same. Also on the WIP screen there needs to be a setting to show all unbilled WIP for the clients.

Pros

Client/Firm Management System all in one! Love that we can do billing, client support, and workflows!

Cons

If/Then statements would be bice to have in Workflows and mass updating a workflow type when making a change.

Transition wasnt as smooth as I would have hoped but I really like my agent. She had done a great job helping me.

Pros

Ease of use, simplicity and value. I feel like we are going to better utilize this system over the system we just replaced.

Cons

Missing some functions we had with our old provider. I was informed that some of the things we need are in the works though.

We have loved every part of Canopy. Clients love the portal. It is saving us both time and our clients money. One client recently learned that they did not have to go somewhere to get docs scanned in that they could do it directly from the app on their phone saving both time and money.

Pros

Ease of pulling transcripts and keeping client documents organized. Managing tasks and keeping employee time to ensure accurate billing has been a huge help in our firm.

Cons

Onboarding was more difficult than expected due to an issue with a previous trial many years ago. Once we were able to fix that and get through it, it has been great.

Overall, I like Canopy. I do believe that there is a lot more kinks to be worked out for the software; however, it has a lot of potential.

Pros

I like the ability to to set up tasks from various places (task bar, client profile, client list, via email).

Cons

I don't like the fact that I can't message me team outside of a task in the software. I always have to message within a task only. I also don't like the fact that I cannot bulk assign tasks within the task area, only within the client list. Additionally, the search bar in the client list does not allow me to search, select, and search again, which makes bulk assigning tasks more tedious.

Pros

Canopy allowed my business to efficiently organize hundreds of clients. It helped our team work together on numerous complicated projects over the multiple years that we used Canopy. I also liked that I could use all of the training that was available.

Cons

There was a lot to learn to use how to use Canopy effectively. The financial cost to use Canopy was significant.

It has been overall useful. Once I get clients to start using the portal it will benefit us all . I would purchase it again .

Pros

I like That everything is mostly in one place . Secure for my clients . I like that clients have an app they can access and that I have one too .

Cons

Learning curve was steep for me and my clients . I currently only have 3 clients using the portal. I also don’t like that it isn’t listed by company but by the \[sensitive content hidden\] name . I wish there was better customer service .

Good for accounting and tax calculation needs for who want everything in one system. Once you get used to it, makes work faster and more simple.

Pros

Easy to use, clean design. Client portal is super helpful, clients upload docs, see invoices, all in one place, saves lot of time. Helped a lot when I had to prepare documentation for clients taxes.

Cons

Price is a bit high, some file issues happen and workflow not always flexible. Few bugs here and there can slow things down.

Overall, we are very happy with Canopy. It has allowed our firm to operate more efficiently, allowing for a number of manual processes to be automated, giving us more visibility over workflow, and the list of positives goes on and on. The software is not perfect, but they do a great job of listening to feedback. They are continuously making improvements.

Pros

The software is easy to use for us internally as well as for our clients. Our firm has drastically benefited from the workflow, file management and client management features. We look forward to moving over our time and billing to have everything under one login.

Cons

We would love to see a more robust Home-Admin page, bulk e-sign requests from templated letters (engagement letters), roles by contact to integrate with tasks to populate assignees (e.g., Partner, Bookkeeper, Preparer, Reviewer, etc.), limit parent task completion to select users (to avoid false completed tasks), share documents with non-portal users, send invoices to non-portal users, parent-sub invoicing, time & billing improvements, allow for folder templates to be applied when tasks are applied, allow for doubling clicking on a file to default to "Edit File" instead of preview mode, allow to search spouses on mobile, allow for additional formatting in Notes section.

Reason for choosing Canopy

Easy of use, multiple product offerings under one login, mobile, Sales Rep was great, Feel Trail was very important to get a feel for the product, price point.

### "Thomson Reuters File cab vs Tax Canopy"

Within two weeks of starting my 30 day free trial, I had it set up (so I could evaluate the details and functionality) and decided to switch from Thomson Reuters File Cab. Another local CPA had also finished his vetting process so Tax Canopy already came highly recommended.

Pros

Free support - chat in or ph call. Templates for global folder creation. Once this is figured out, you can populate new client files with all the needed folders in less than 30 seconds. Using "Tags" to identify clients to send email blasts inside Canopy - brilliant! Unlimited file storage. Thomson Reuters charges me which is odd in this day and age with super affordable data storage. Annotations to files (i.e. PDFs) without paying for an ADobe license. Client portals. I've used other portal software, including the Thompson Reuters VO portal, but Canopy has this down to simple science. The Desktop Assistant allows you to edit live Word and Excel files.

Cons

File migration from File Cab. I wrote a how-to process sheet for my firm so this is doable just time-consuming. Don't let that deter you as it is part of the pain to switch from one software to another. We also are ditching Thomson Reuters Practice CS (i.e. their time and billing software) for the one inside Canopy. The invoicing and reporting are much weaker in Canopy compared to Practice CS so this is a problem but wasn't a deal-breaker. Canopy has assured me that better reports are forthcoming and I trust Canopy.

### "Best Tax Resolution Software Out There!"

Love Canopy and can't imagine doing our jobs without it!! The support staff is outstanding both via chat and calling in. They have been open to new ideas, are positive and almost always help us to solve our problems.

Pros

The software is intuitive and easy to use. I'm sure we under utilize it but it works great for our small office. The thing we like best is that it keeps us organized! There are so many great features though including allowing us to be paperless.

Cons

I wish we could customize the text in the "Notes" section. We use Notes a lot. Would love to be able to use colored text - red for deadlines, green for amounts due, etc. Also wish we could search the contact list by phone numbers. We often receive incoming calls in which the name listed on the caller ID is not the name of the actual person. Currently, we have to enter the phone number into our cell phone to see if it is someone we have spoken with before or a current client.

My overall experience with Canopy has been a good one thus far. Even though I bitch about the cost l, I continue to stay because of the ease of use, simplicity for my clients, and automation I’ve created within my tech stack.

Pros

The best feature is the client portal and mobile app. It has been a business transformation blessing from way before COVID was ever a thing. I remember way back in 2017 when the mobile app was nearly launching how it revolutionized the way my clients do business with me. This is what has kept me on Canopy in spite of the price hikes.

Cons

Canopy recently has changed their pricing model and I don’t like it because it increases the barriers to tax professional adoption. There are other titles out there who bring good feature sets and a much lower price point and has given me reason to start shopping elsewhere. What keeps me at Canopy is not wanting to invest the time in moving my clients files over to a new system, notifying my clients that I virtually moved virtual offices, and avoiding the headaches of all the client questions that would ensue.

### "Canopy is Great for Small- and Mid-size Tax and Bookkeeping Firms"

Pros

The two features that my firm likes the most in Canopy is the Client Portal and Tax Resolution (IRS transcript delivery service). When purchasing the software, we knew we needed a Client Portal through which clients could exchange documents with us via their smartphone, and we've really liked that feature (being able to brand it as "ours" is a nice touch). What we didn't know - until we used it - was just how much time we save with pulling IRS transcripts through Canopy's Tax Resolution tool versus pulling transcripts through IRS e-services. Once your Form 2848 is on file with the IRS, you can pull every transcript for which you're authorized for a given client with the touch of a button. They download directly from the IRS in PDF format, and with one more button you can save every transcript to the client's file. The time savings is incredible, versus downloading individual transcripts one year and one form at a time.

Cons

I personally feel that the e-signature process is a bit clunky, but that's probably just because I don't have much experience with IRS-approved e-signatures (which require knowledge-based authentication). But at least I know that Canopy is compliant with IRS regulations concerning e-signatures!

There are other options out there and I could easily stick w sharefile. However I wanted to up my game and show my clients a better higher tech experience. As you know, solopreneurs have a hard time competing w the small to middle size firms. Seems like you need to up your game or at least let me know about your game!

Pros

Clients like the portal. It has helped improve the perception that my firm cares about their info. It also feels very organized. It is easy to set up a portal.

Cons

Yegads, what to me seems like obvious items, the organizer doesn’t roll over from prior year to current year. Your current solution is for me to set up customer accounts for each member of a family unit. This seems dumb and a waste of accounts, my and my team’s time, my money and the client perception and experience. If i as a customer was asked by my firm to re enter all prior year into, I would be beyond annoyed. I would wonder what kind of high tech experience Alison isn’t offering me. As a customer, I would also be less inclined to complete it because It is a waste of my time. Your customer service and training library aren’t helpful. Since it is very self serve, I have no idea what to look for in terms of better ways to use canopy because I don’t know what I don’t know. You let us all know at the innovation summit about the 100 new features you have rolled out. My admin and I were dumbfounded to learn this. How did we not know About the cool ways you are trying to make my life better? Do you offer monthly training or “ask me anything” webinars that don’t require me to pay extra or upgrade to a higher level. If you do, why don’t I know about them? If you don’t, why don’t you? It seems like you would help me have a better experience with the software and keep me as a recurring customer. Also, it is hard as nails to get requests followed up on. Customer service isn’t great.

### "Going to miss Canopy!"

I love Canopy. I am closing my CPA practice and joined a national firm. There must be 50+ applications and multiple locations for document storage and management. I still find myself using Canopy every day while transitioning my clients over to the new firm. I can't say enough how functional Canopy is in managing the client work. Also, the folks at Canopy are great to work with. New additional functionality is added all the time. The development team has an open ear to ideas and improvements. Canopy is only going to get better with time. I would continue to use it if I could.

Pros

Canopy is a great tool for all-in-one tracking of client relations, tasking, workflow, and running a CPA firm. I loved being able to go straight to the client home page and having access to all of the client information. Contact information, notes, tasks, important contacts related to the client, recent files, engagements - all of the information right there! Fantastic. Then I can drill down under communications to all of the client emails and correspondence with the client. Tax organizers are accessible from there too. All the information in one location! The fact that I could request an IRS transcript through Canopy for clients was amazing.

Cons

I didn't use the online payment system since I used another system to payments. I wasn't a fan of the pricing plan but it still was comparable with other vendors. Overall there wasn't much about Canopy that I didn't like.

Reason for choosing Canopy

We looked at several applications and even looked at hiring a software consulting company to build out a software solution on top of existing CRMs. In the end, although Canopy didn't have everything we wanted, what they did have was great and we could tell that they were on a great trajectory for continual future improvements.
