For our environmental work in Malawi, it’s become the go-to tool for quick site map creation, digitizing survey boundaries, and viewing GPS field data on older laptops. The software runs reliably, the ease of use means less training time, and the value for money is undeniable for what it does. However, the complete lack of traffic and road conditions data and meaningful route planning tools means we can’t use it for transportation-related projects, and the thin features set pushes us into heavier software for any analysis. The slow email support hasn’t been a dealbreaker yet, but it could be if a critical bug appeared. If your work stops at viewing, editing, and printing maps, it’s a great buy. Just know that anything beyond basic mapping will need another GIS alongside it. Pros Value for Money is the standout. The license cost is a fraction of what heavy enterprise GIS packages demand, yet it covers all the essential mapping and data editing we need for day-to-day work. Features like direct GPS connectivity, attribute table editing, and spatial query tools are all there for fundamental GIS tasks, giving us just enough to complete 80% of a simple project without leaving the software. Cons Traffic and Road Conditions and Route Planning are practically absent. There is no live traffic feed, no road network condition layer, and the route planning tool is extremely basic—it can measure distances and draw simple paths, but it cannot optimize routes, account for one-way streets, or factor in real-world constraints. This makes it unusable for logistics or transport planning work. Features are limited once you need advanced spatial analysis. There is no geoprocessing model builder, no raster calculator, no hydrological or terrain analysis tools, and no integration with cloud GIS services. It’s a purely desktop tool with no API for automation. Customer Support is email-only and response times can be slow, often taking a few days for a resolution on technical questions. I'm not a computer whiz and needed help customizing the software to meet my business needs. GIS customer service explained the features & how to do this (including importing lots of different data). The learning curve is a curve, not a cliff.The census data downloader is super easy to use. I’m continuing to navigate and work with the features. Pros I needed an inexpensive map tool to use for an informational travel blog & online course I’m developing. This software is working well. I just wish I had more time to work on it. Customer service is fantastic with quick response to answer my questions and help set up the instructions for my specific need. I have had few problems with the use as it is very similar to others. I really liked the interface. Pros It is an alternative to other programs that are more expensive or that require better hardware. Cons I don't have many criticisms, I'm in the testing phase. Maybe it needs to be corrected and improve the graphics to make it more pleasant to use. Right away I noticed the graphics were much better than one of the other cartography programs whose graphics looked like the Atari space invaders game. I also noticed the customer service was incredible. One day I'm going to visit these guys and buy them all steak dinners because of all the help they've given me. I asked a ton of questions in those first 30 days and then a ton of questions afterwards. Now they almost never hear from me but when I do need something they are always right there with the answer. The software runs great. I was a bit nervous about doing all the cartography myself but I must say my maps are turning out wonderfully! Pros What do I like most about this software? Everything. It's easy to use. It's super cheap. It gets the job done fast and well. The customer service goes above and beyond answering my inquiries. It stands by it's name - Simple. Everything is laid out in a clear and concise way - easy to find, easy to use. Before I found Simple I tried THREE other mapping software programs - ranging from $2500 to $750 - and Simple is just as good (in one case, far better!) as any of them at a fraction of the price. I don't know why anyone would pay more for a different software when everything they need is right here in Simple. Plus a month long trial? And spectacular customer service? Yeah - it's a no-brainer. Cons It's not really a complaint about the software - it's more that I need a better computer. All of the cartography software programs I tried - and now Simple, which I bought - they all freeze and crash. But that is because my computer is crappy and I need one with better capabilities. I would also suggest making the manual searchable so we could use the "find" function to search for specific topics. Oh - and the youtube tutorial videos are great but I seriously recommend doing them in only 1 to 2 minute segments with specific subjects instead of 30 to 40 minute segments where someone has to wait and wait and wait for their specific question to come up. Leave the long ones on for reference but add those super quick videos so people can speedily reference what they need to know. Or even put a list in the youtube videos description which breaks down the video minute by minute so people can find what they need faster.
