“A must-have if you are a professional translator. But it has small bugs and could be easier to use.”

OverallIt's a great and necessary tool for professional translators. However, it's expensive and still has some minor bugs that simply shouldn't be there, given the fact we are talking about a leader from its industry with so many years of expertise involved.
ProsIf you are or intend to be a professional translator, you must have a CAT Tool. And when it comes to CAT Tools, Trados Studio is the biggest reference. It's pricey and you may think it's too much money to invest in a software. Well, if you work full-time with translations, it will pay off! It makes your job so much easier, faster and more consistent that you will catch yourself adding even very small files to your Trados prior to translate, just to make sure you can benefit from your own Memory Translation and Quality Check tools. In addition to all those pros, it's important to mention that it's a reference in this industry, so if you are willing to work for translation agencies, they will eventually ask if you have a valid Trados license and start sending your Trados projects, instead of a .xls or .doc file.
ConsIn spite of all the advantages and pros of using Trados for work, it still has some bugs that really bother the user. My Trados will crash and close at least once a day or every two days. Fortunately, since all translations are copied string by string to my MT on the go, these crashes normally do not cause me to lose any job, but it's still an annoying waste of time to re-open the software every time. It is not so straightforward as it could be when you want to add a new file to a project or do some other actions on it. After all, it's one of those incredible powerful tools that you will take time to master (and, after 4 years working with it, I still discover new functions every month, feeling that those could be clearer and easier to be seen/found).

“Not the best CAT tool in the market”

OverallYou better think of that if you consider implementing this system in your enterprise: You definitely need to train your employees on it, it's not an easy to use App, it needs training and the courses about this software is an industry itself and I see that a weakness not a strength point.
ProsI give the software that it is really accepting (nearly) all formats you perhaps need to use in your works in localisation and translation industries.
Consthe cost of software is very high, it slows the computer (if you don't have a one with enough computing power) you feel like installing a heavy-software like photoshop! although you are dealing (or that just me?) just with texts. the UI are crowded, very crowded (when I using it I remember that I don't need a lot of its features)

“The biggest reference for CAT tools.”

OverallSDL Trados Studio is, by far, the most known CAT tool out there. It's an expensive software, but once you start using it for your projects, you will quickly notice how this can pays itself off in a few months (or days, depending on your workload). After years translating with SDL Trados, it's impossible to imagine my rountine without a CAT Tool like this. The downside is that it may freeze at sometimes for no apparent reason. It also demands a good PC to run it smoothly, as it tends to be a bit slow in older devices. Overall, it is worth every cent if you do intend to work as a translator!
ProsIt makes your job as a translator sooo much easier, faster and more professional! The translation memories and termbases allow you to work like 2x faster and keep consistency throughout your project. It's a really powerful tool (after 5 years working daily with it, I still discover new and incredible tools and features every week).
ConsThe software may freeze or present some errors that force you to reopen it. It may also have a hard time working with MS Word file full of tags. You may need a strong PC to work it properly and smoothly.

“Trados is the industry standard CAT tool, useful but has its downsides”

OverallProductivity, brings me business.
ProsTrados is a productivity tool that is indispensable for professional translators. It is the preferred platform of the industry and many clients require its use. Therefore, it is a good investment for professional translators. It has batch processing features and filtering options which aid in quality control and increase productivity.
ConsThe filtering functions could be better/more complex. I have experienced quite a few bugs over the years. Easily accessible customer support costs extra. Finding direct help from Trados without paying for the support package is like pulling teeth. Luckily, so many people use the software, it is usually easy and quick to find troubleshooting tips through online forums.

“The essential tool for productive translators”

OverallOverall, I have had a very positive working experience with Trados Studio in the past 3 years. I like the optional add-ons available from SDL's website to help you automate certain tasks.
ProsTrados Studio offers a steep learning curve. Within a few days after starting, you will be able to work efficiently and the user interface is quite fool-proof. There is a lot of information available online should you run into any issues with file formats or other matters that seem to be a hurdle to you.
ConsAt first I was taken aback a bit by the price, however, considering that thanks to using the programme you will be able to work faster and more efficiently, your investment will soon pay off.

“The must-have C.A.T. tool!”

OverallSDL Trados helps us manage any project of any size, whatever files need to be processed. This is the 'Swiss knife' of the translation industry!
ProsSDL Trados Studio is THE tool we use on a daily basis to manage most of our translation projects. It is powerful and I still have to come across a file type which Studio could not process. The SDL App Store is also a huge benefit and the integration of plug-ins just makes our work even faster. Want to be an efficient Language Service Provider? Then get yourself a SDL Trados Studio license!
ConsI wish one could export selected segments for review. Also, a more flexible segment sorting would be much appreciated

“The best CAT tool on the market (subjectively)”

OverallI have been using it since 2007 version and I must say it is the best CAT tool on the market. It has many features the standard user will never use, but it can help you with your translation tasks tremendously. It might be a bit difficult for non-tech-savvy translators at first, but trust me, you can learn to use it proficiently in less than an hour :) However, the biggest issue is the steep price, that is why many translators use to work with cheaper solutions undermining SDL's position in the long-term.
ProsAbundant with features. There are features you will use only once a year, but it can save your day.
ConsThe price is a bit too steep with constant new versions (every two years or so)

“popularity costs money”

OverallI'll summarise it short - experience is really good. If there's anything bad, then it depends only on our, translators, mood :)
ProsI, as a translator, would say it's the most popular tool among translators. So you can trust - it's legit. Another advantage - you can translate almost any kind of text thanks to Trados. Besides, it available for companies, or for individuals. Quick to install.
ConsSince it's legit and so popular, sure you must pay for it. Good things cost money. I don't want to say it should be for free, but a bit less. {on the contrary, to myself- if the company wants to keep the high quality of the programme, it has to pay all the IT specialists who work on it}. Another thing - if you want to start to use it on your own, you really have to read, watch and do everything else to understand how to use it properly.

“Power tool with a great user interface.”

Pros- The Office-suite-look user interface makes the tool seem really familiar and user-friendly. - Trados Studio has improved over time and has been implementing new useful filters for the most common file formats that make them a reference CAT tool in the sector.
Cons- Misses some powerful and advanced functionalities, especially to work with software files such as .resx, for that you need to turn to Passolo, also from the SDL family.

“Good tool but not a must have”

ProsTrados is one of the most commonly used translation software out there. What I like about Trados is that it remembers phases that I have used previously so I can create a more consistent translation which alone is a huge time saver.
ConsOccasionally it freezes up it is also expensive. If you are working for an agency your agency might be able to offer you a different software free of charge.

“A more modern CAT tool”

OverallThe offline review tool needs to work before I can give it my wholehearted recommendation. There are many features that I definitely like more than competitive tools, and if I was doing translation myself, I'd have a hard time avoiding the purchase. That being said, it remains a necessary evil at best for translation agencies who have clients that require its use. We would not be using it if a client did not require it.
ProsThis program is probably the closest to the industry standard. It's extremely robust, with lots of add-ins the expand the capabilities. It covers all the standard bases as well for a modern CAT tool, and is usually the only CAT tool you'll see fully integrated in other translation project management tools or TMSs.
ConsIt feels a little clunky in some places, and the features aren't always where you would expect to find them. SDL is clearly trying hard to get everyone onboard with their environment and their tools, but the reality is that the majority of translators in our industry (highly specialized legal translators) are at a point in their career where they don't need to invest in Studio to get the work they need, and so many top translators are unwilling to take projects that work in Studio. There is a very glitchy "offline review tool" that converts the project to a bicolumn word document, but it is not designed to be used for translation outside of the Studio environment, so it is a pain to work with, if it works at all.

“Been using SDL Trados for years now - very happy and will continue to use it.”

OverallTranslations are done better and faster.
ProsIt does what it needs to and it does it well. Very well recognized name with other vendors so easy to find people who use it.
ConsSometimes the updates and licensing can be a bit of a pain. Unless you pay extra the support turn around time can be a bit slow (but they are always friendly and will do everything they can for you)

“Initially difficult to get the hang of it but after just a few projects became easy and automatic.”

OverallThe possibility to work freelance more efficient and effectively while also being hired independently by companies that use the same software
ProsAfter you've learned most features, you realise all the great qualities, for example, creating a translation memory or your own terminology database basically using any languages you work with, while also providing different specialised fields where you can save them according to your own categories. It adds up to an incredible time saver that increases your productivity, which is also accountable, because it keeps track of how many words you've translated and also tells you how much further you have to go.
ConsI would have to say its incompatibility with other softwares. You cannot share translation memories or any other documents with non Trados users.

“Absolutely essential for a professional translator”

OverallIn my opinion, SDL Trados is the most complete CAT tool on the market. As well as offering basic features such as automatic alignment and adaptive TMs, the more advanced functionalities such as AutoSuggest, PerfectMatch or termbase integration will greatly boost your productivity. It also offers some project management and preparation capabilities, which do come in handy. Further useful plug ins and apps can be found on the SDL AppStore, although purchasing the individual licenses can get pricy. All in all, a great proudct, though there are cheaper CAT tools out there .
ProsProductivity boost, PDF reader, ease of use, great design.
ConsThe price point.

ProsTranslation Memory management is great, userinterface is friendly and doesn't take long getting used to.
ConsProcessing PDF files can be a paint, sometimes impossible. Performance could be improved, maybe opt in for hardware accelleration? Definitely missing OCR option - I belive it is a must. Segmentation of documents could be improved, a lot of the times text loses sence due to segmentation.

“The CAT tool you will be required to use”

OverallI only use Trados (I started using it back in 2006, now using version 2017) when I am required by an agency. This is not because I don't know how to, on the contrary, I can and have taught people how to work with it. But the result is invariably the same: they are dumbfounded by its complexity, especially after comparing it to other tools.
ProsRich in features and functionalities. The support for community-made add-ons that solve various problems or improve (facilitate) functionality.
ConsTrados has the steepest learning curve among the leading CAT tools, and managing even a simple setting can be quite a challenge. I have to say I hate the fact the in order to be able to work with terminology, you are required to purchase a separate - and costly - tool.

“Wide opportunities to overcome the language barrier for any specialist”

ProsIn everyday situations I use this program. It is imperfect, but it gives a better result than the translators from Google. I am pleased with the simple interface and nice design. At the same time, the program has good functionality and remembers the previous translation (it allows inserting already finished pieces at full or partial coincidence).
ConsTranslation is imperfect, as in any other automated translation system. I would like to improve the translation of the artistic text.

“Powerful CAT tool”

ProsThe program is simply indispensable for all those who professionally translate. It is convenient to work with Word and PDF. The interface is clear, you can quickly understand all the functions. There is a module for connecting dictionaries.
ConsThe program should be purchased by professionals and those who earn remittances. Like any other CAT tool, Trados is not suitable for literary translations. From technical shortcomings - the program takes up a lot of space.

“A leader on the market that could use some improvement in UI”

OverallI need to work with Trados because some of my clients work with it and we need to keep the same format of files. The tool itself is pretty great except for some features that feel like overkill.
ProsTrados was one the first tools that I have used and I always appreciated the straightforward project setup process.
ConsThis tools suffers from an abundance of features that only a small fraction of users actually need or use. It could definitely improve user interface to make it easier for users to navigate the menu and perform simple commands. Proprietary file formats make compatibility with other similar tools an issues as well.

“Extremely buggy”

OverallNegative due to the amount of bugs. This is a relatively simple piece of software, but the number of problems reported by the users defies imagination. In addition, it ends up to be as expensive as 5 licences of MS Office Pro, which is infinitely more complex and has a fraction of the problems.
ProsVery useful when you get to find a version that works.
ConsAmazing number of bugs in any version. One version corrects previous bugs, and adds even worse ones.

“Great software!”

ProsThe program has an intelligent memory that allows it to extract and quickly translate familiar pieces of text. This is a very convenient function, which is little implemented. It was she who caused my acquaintance with this system. I recommend.
ConsAbsolutely useless for ordinary non-professional literature. This is not a translator in the classical sense. The program remembers what the translator has already translated. This point of many is misleading.

“WONDERFUL if you can afford it”

ProsI have tried the free version of this product in the past and honestly wish it was worth it for me to purchase, but at my current workflow it just isn't a possibility. Having said that, I found the software incredibly useful in improving quality and speed of translations. I hope to purchase it in the near future.
ConsIt is pricey and many things aren't included and have to be paid for as extras.

“The perfect tool for working with other translators and translation companies.”

OverallReally good for working with/for other companies, sharing TMs and making accurate budgets or calculating estimates because you can see how much you work and how many words or segments were new.
ProsIts abundance in features to simplify and accelerated a translator's work is the best thing about. How you can file any segments, languages, terminology used, fields within languages, etc. And you can actually measure and see your productivity, wordcount, etc., while you are working on each project.
ConsIt takes a while to get the hang of it and to effectively benefit from all its features. Several tutorials where needed.

“Probably the most used translation software”

ProsIncludes everything that a professional translator needs. But can be do complicated for a seldom user.
ConsMaybe too complicated for those who are not using it on a daily basis. Most clients however require Trados for most of the translation tasks.

“Difficult and overpriced software”

OverallI have never had a great experience with Trados. Yes, it is capable of a lot, but it costs so much time to be able to learn how to effectively use it, and for the number of errors and problems you can come across while trying to figure it out, it's completely not worth it.
ProsThe only real benefit I see to using Trados is that a lot of people use it, so as a linguist it would be a great tool to have just to be able to work on projects for clients that use Trados.
ConsThis software is so expensive! Honestly, I believe it is seriously overpriced. It is SO difficult and complicated to use, completely NOT intuitive or user friendly. It takes a lot of time to learn how to use it well and to maximize the benefits and features. There are often unexplainable bugs that can slow down projects and make life plain frustrating.

“Convenient memory storage function”

ProsI constantly use the memory accumulation function - it's a very convenient thing that saves time. At first it was necessary to get used, but now I really understand that this is a professional tool and an approach to it is necessary corresponding. You can't completely rely on the program.
ConsDifficulties with the translation of the books. There, the same fragments are very rare. This makes the system almost useless. I also searched for it for a long time, but I still could not find ready-made databases of formalized texts.

“Wasn't able to Successfully Implement It”

OverallI do freelance translation. I typically work with manually scanned documents and faxes, where something like Trados or another CAT tool is not helpful. However, a larger company asked me to consider Trados in order to complete a specialized project with them, and I agreed. After spending many frustrating hours trying to successfully complete operations within Trados, I gave up and cancelled the contract with the company. Perhaps in the future, while working with someone who knows Trados well, I might have some success with it. But, as it is, I wasn't able to get any useful work out of it.
ProsThe biggest pro that Trados has going for it is the number of companies that require the use of Trado in order to do translation work for them.
ConsIt isn't intuitive and is not easy to use.

“Versatile and powerful”

OverallTranslation, proofreading
ProsGreat translation memory and term-base management and maintenance. Despite some flaws, It's the best translation tool out there.
ConsLong learning process to find where is what. Some bugs and it doesn't have a live preview which would be handy.

“Easy-to-use tool that helps you to speed up your work!”

OverallOne of the main characteristics a good translator needs is consistency in terminology. This tool allows me to be very consistent in my translations.
ProsBeing a frequent user of CAT tools, I may say that one of the best features of this software is its Translation memory. I do not need internet to complete my translations.
ConsUploading some document formats makes it tedious and time-consuming. Price is a little too high when compared to what you get in exchange.
