I have been a subscriber for nearly a year. On June 16 I discovered that historical data I had already exported from the AI Brand Performance module had been retroactively altered. Two exports of the identical May 9 dataset, one pulled in May and one pulled in June from the historical view of the same period, produced completely different results across all four tracked AI platforms. Gemini share of voice dropped from 8.2% to 0%. Google AI Mode sentiment dropped from 96.1% to a SEMrush-generated error message reading "Data unavailable." The Gemini export was 7 pages shorter than the original because entire data sections simply stopped rendering. ChatGPT sentiment dropped from 78% favorable to 0%. This is not a performance change. This is the same historical period showing different data on two different dates. Historical data should not change. Theirs did. I spent 3.5 hours building a 17-page forensic report documenting every discrepancy across all four platforms with side-by-side tables and original source PDFs. I submitted 9 original exports as evidence. I built a public dashboard. I cited their own Terms of Service by section number. I did all of that while paying $517 a month because I believed the platform was worth holding accountable. Their support team responded with canned suggestions that I had changed my domain or picked the wrong date range. Neither was true. After 6 hours of silence they sent an apology with no update and no timeline. Their technical team reviewed everything I submitted and responded that there were no issues on their side. My account representative has not responded to three emails or returned a voicemail. It has now been over 55 hours since I first reported this issue. I have received zero meaningful update. Their resolution after all of that: a $50 credit. With the explanation, verbatim, "while we are waiting for the development team's response, this is a compensation for your patience." $50. On a $517 a month account when their own TOS shows I should be offered $1553.85 For a confirmed, repeat data integrity failure that made my entire dashboard unusable for days and cost me billable client work. I canceled my plan today and moved to SE Ranking. The contrast was immediate. When I reached out to SE Ranking to ask about their tools before committing, someone spoke with me instantly. That is the standard SEMrush could not meet in 55 hours. I have also submitted a formal legal brief to their legal team and initiated a chargeback with my bank. If you are considering SEMrush for any data-dependent SEO or AI visibility work, understand that their historical data is not stable, their support cannot resolve data integrity failures, their account representatives do not return calls or emails, and their idea of accountability is $50 and a prayer emoji. There are better options. I found one the same day I started looking. Pros Nothing. None of their data can we trusted. It has significantly changed my rankings in a negative way Cons Everything. They do not provide customer support, I went 55 hours of continuous asking for follow ups to only be told to be more patient each time you can’t speak to a live person and the chat is very condescending. Merketing director Internet Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Unwanted add-on charges, no refund, and no easy way to remove payment details" April 1, 2026 1.0 My overall experience with Semrush started positively because the platform is powerful and offers many useful SEO and competitor analysis features. However, that positive impression was completely overshadowed by a very poor billing and account management experience. I was charged for an expensive AdClarity add-on that I did not clearly intend to subscribe to, and the charges continued until I noticed them. When I contacted support, my refund request was denied. I also found it very frustrating that I could not simply remove my payment card directly, and that removing the add-on required contacting support by email and waiting up to two weeks. As a result, my experience went from initially positive to deeply disappointing, mainly because of the lack of transparency and customer control. Pros The platform is comprehensive and includes a wide range of SEO and competitor analysis tools. Semrush Cons The biggest issue was not the software itself, but the billing practices. An expensive add-on was charged to my account without clear and informed consent on my side, and once discovered, no refund was offered. On top of that, I could not directly remove my card, and canceling the add-on required contacting support and waiting up to two weeks. I realized within two days of resubscribing that I did not have the time or technical background needed to use the tool effectively, and I contacted support immediately after recognizing this. While customer support was responsive, the refund process was extremely rigid. Despite the very short timeframe and the fact that I had not meaningfully used the product, my refund request was denied and the case was closed as final. This left me feeling that there was little flexibility or consideration for small business owners who quickly determine the platform is not a good fit. This may be an excellent tool for SEO professionals or agencies, but based on my experience, it requires more expertise and time than many solo business owners realistically have. Pros Semrush is clearly a very powerful and comprehensive SEO platform. It offers an impressive range of tools and data, and I can see how it would be extremely valuable for experienced SEO professionals or teams who use it daily. The depth of features and analytics suggests it’s well-built for advanced use cases. Cons I resubscribed to Semrush after having used it briefly in the past when I had an assistant helping me. This time, I intended to use it myself as a solo small business owner. Within two days of resubscribing, it became very clear that I did not have the time, technical background, or bandwidth to use the platform effectively. I contacted customer support almost immediately, explained that I had not used the tool, and asked for a refund. I was polite, transparent, and acknowledged that this was technically a resubscription—even though my previous use had been with help and this was my first attempt to use it independently. Despite the request being made within two days, my refund was denied because the subscription was month-to-month rather than annual. The case was escalated internally and then closed as “final,” with no reconsideration possible. While I understand companies have policies, this experience felt particularly rigid given: •The extremely short timeframe (2 days) •The lack of actual product use •The reality that Semrush is heavily marketed to small business owners, despite having a very steep learning curve This platform may work well for experienced SEO professionals or teams, but in my experience it is not beginner-friendly and not forgiving to solo business owners who quickly realize it’s not the right fit. I would strongly encourage other small business owners to fully understand the refund limitations before subscribing and to be realistic about whether they truly have the time and expertise required to use this tool effectively. I strongly recommend reading the fine print and being very cautious before subscribing. Cons I had a very frustrating experience trying to cancel my SEMrush subscription. I attempted to cancel before the renewal charge, yet I was still billed and then denied a refund. What made this worse was the cancellation process itself. Their system repeatedly sent the same automated email over and over, never progressing to the next step. At no point does SEMrush clearly disclose that these email responses are AI-generated, which is misleading and wastes a lot of time. The process only moved forward after I explicitly asked to speak with a human, something that is not clearly indicated anywhere in the cancellation flow. Even after following the steps and attempting to cancel in good faith before being charged, SEMrush refused to issue a refund. Also they nickel and dime you about everything. Review Source Alp A. But now their support is terrible. No rectification of a clear fault. Replying with there is no error when there is a clear error. Cons We've noticed more and more discrepancies and missing data that are HUGE in comparison to every other tool. or they are flatout just missing. eg. Position Tracking tool - our most importantly used tool. volume for a keyword in Google Keyword Planner set to same location is showing a volume of 590 and in semrush its a flat 0. Most of position tracking over different client accounts are showing 0 volume for their most primary keywords and in turn making our traffic metrics look like garbage in position tracking, when infact they're booming. I raised this issue with their support just after my renewal, they stretched the responses out for 2 weeks after multiple follow up attempts and then wont refund me my 5k renewal because it's now outside the strict 7 day refund period. However the issue was raised literally two days after the renewal where i mentioned im giving them the opportunity to resolve and update all my campaigns first before i ask for a refund. I did the right thing - they want to scam me. Semrush in my eyes now is just a scam. Stay away. There are much better tools out there and weve moved off and will never look back and have only but the worst to say about semrush like most the other reviews on here. Review Source JB Joe B. CEO Computer Software Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Good SEO tool with strong features but some billing hiccups" December 5, 2025 4.0 Functionally, Semrush has done what we needed: monitor technical site health, track rankings for key terms, and give a quick read on how we compare with competitors. For several years it has been a useful, if not cheap, part of our marketing stack and has helped guide our SEO and content priorities. We did have a difficult experience around add-ons and renewal, which was frustrating initially. That said, once the issue was fully understood and escalated, Semrush support resolved it by removing the add-ons and issuing full credits for the disputed charges. Overall, the product itself is strong and we continue to get value from the core Pro features. With some improvements to add-on transparency and renewal communication, it would be even easier to recommend. Pros The core SEO features are solid. The Pro plan gives a clear view of site health, keyword rankings and basic competitor visibility in one place. Site audits, keyword tracking and simple competitor checks are easy to run and interpret, which has been useful for a small B2B SaaS like us without a huge in-house SEO team. Once projects are set up, it’s straightforward to monitor how our SEO is performing over time and to spot issues early. Cons The platform is powerful, but the interface and pricing structure can feel complex if you’re not using it every day. There is a learning curve in understanding which features and limits you actually need, and how add-ons interact with the main subscription. We did experience confusion around add-ons (SERP Gap Analyzer and Local Pro) and how they affected our renewal. At first, the focus in support was on internal refund policies rather than on clearing up the underlying issue. However, after escalation Semrush ultimately removed the add-ons we didn’t need and issued full account credits for the associated charges, which I appreciate. Semrush provides that every single day, audits of my websites, tracking of keywords, gaps between competitors - it all resides in a single place and, in fact, makes a difference in the work I create on a weekly basis. Pros I like the fact that I have been getting the depth of competitor information on a daily basis. Bright Ads campaign decisions are less defensive and more precise due to what Semrush brings up. I have used Semrush to check the SEO and site health of the websites that I manage, and it is really useful to find the areas that need to be improved and what you need to do to improve them. I have dealt with the customer support to help get the most out of Semrush and they have been very helpful when contacted. It’s time saving when it comes to keyword research, with the use of AI also lets you know if a website is able to rank on this keyword and what needs to be optimized. Cons We operate on a smaller country with its own language, so many keyword information are not always available. The reports are based on SEMrush database so it’s not always accurate. Expansion Manager Computer Software Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "A lot of service, too much for a beginner and horrible cancelation processing" June 3, 2025 2.0 Overall, like I said they would benefit greatly from at least having a BEGINNER view or some kind of onboarding survey that directly puts you into a beginner view with just the tools available to handle whatever the new subscriber came to handle. Then it can expand out from there. The peopel I dealt with in person were fine but the cancelation experience is against the law and a nightmare, honestly. Pros It was a decent tool to SEO optimize blog articles. There are a ton of things to do in the platform, but I feel it's so much built it can be difficult to navigate. You have to have a "degree in semrush" in order to actually fully utilize it. This is problematic when there are other tools like the ones by \[sensitive content hidden\] which are simpler. I feel there really needs to be a beginner UI and the various UI elements should be unlockable or in some way there should be a beginner version. Cons There's quite a few things. Their SEO optimization for articles is okay, but I find just prompting a free GPT instance to be about the same. Using paid GPT is considerably better. The article builder has an image suggestion tool that's absolutely bogus. It's generative AI image prompting bordering on 2019 quality and looks like it hasn't been iterated on since launch. Just unusable and even when you can create a halfway decent image it still looks like AI gen slop. Their cancelation policy is incredibly out-dated and violates FTC guidelines on a one-click cancellation. I've spoken to support about this and I get back a robotic response of "That's just what our policy is." They don't seem to get it's factually against the law. Here's the entire process: 1. You can't just go to your subscription and click cancel 2. You have submit a chat request 3. The chat then takes you to a form you have to fill out with your reason for canceling and VERIFY you want to cancel. 4. Then you are sent an eMail CONFIRMING your cancelation that you need to click on. 5. Further still I was told despite going through all these steps, "You didn't give clear intent of your desire to cancel." so I was billed for another month. I tried to clarify for the 4th time that it's not supposed to be this way and is in fact an FTC violation. No acknowledgement of that. Just robotic replies ignoring it. Review Source RA Roger A. They give you the run around and require you to jump through hoops to cancel their free trial and then deny even when you've done what you're supposed to do. Their policies are highly illegal. I'm sharing because I don't want others to have to deal with the same things I did. Pros I used it for a short time during my trial period. There are other websites out there that have similar features. Cons Semrush is absolutely horrendous when it comes to customer service. I am not the only one (look at Google reviews). I cancelled during their free trial period with plenty of time to spare and they still charged me hundreds of dollars. They are refusing to return the money and are using shady practices to give me the run around. It is highly illegal due to the FTC's one-click to cancel law. Do not give them business. They've been reported to the authorities and to the Federal Trade Commission. Cons I wish there was better insight on Advertising analysis of competitors, it only shows google search keywords mostly from what I have seen, I would like for it to show a more comprehensive footprint of digital advertising.
