Pros: Athena is extremely easy to use. I am in charge of training new providers in our practice and even those that are terrible with computers seem to "get it" quickly. It's loaded with great tools and features and I'm able to finish my notes immediately after seeing patients. It has many ways to customize it for my practice.

Cons: There are so many small improvements that Athena could make and while they do offer a sort of "suggestion" page within their system that they review, they are more focused on forward improvement than dedicating resources to fix the small issues that exist with the current system.

Comments: Not worth it

Pros: Can¿t tell if anything you might think is an all service practice management but not really customization is limited as well as expensive when you add everything you need

Cons: You are not in control need a biller coder on staff and still have to pay 7 percent. Not a trial period when you could back out and still get your money back

Pros: This EMR makes my small office more efficient and allows me to automate some aspects of it. It helps keep me in check with the new changes happening in the field.

Cons: This EMR has several aspects that I do not use. It does take a few weeks to get used to using it.

Comments: Reports that are more customizable than what is offered.

Comments: Customer service is useless, plenty of bugs, not interested in hearing what problem is, every complaint/but we have tried to report we have been told is a "work flow issue", the customer service phone people seem like they have zero experience with software or the medical field and how an actual office works, seems like they just read off a script that always ends in a "work flow" problem. they choose to do updates in the middle of the day which inevitably leads to slower performance and crashes most of the time, most companies would have downtime overnight when usage is low, NOT ATHENA!!!

Pros: drop downs, ease of documentation, layout of pages good, easy to toggle between items (when the site is performing as expected.

Cons: devastating slow loading more often than not, crashes frequent, they never have any answers, always a work flow problem, have even figured out the glitch on more than one occasion and they still do not think anything is wrong.

A pretty good product.

Comments: It's overall a good product.

Pros: Athena is a user friendly program. It is easy to use the scheduling system. Other areas in the system are fairly easy to use as well.

Cons: Athena could improve in a few areas. It sounds like there will be some updates coming out soon, so hopefully billing claims will be better.

Comments: For the cost of the system there needs to be better and quicker way around the chart. From making appointments all the way thru a visit there are many clicks that slow down the visit. Even when done there is too many items to be completed even when everything is mapped and templates are made with order sets.

Pros: The thing I like most is that I can write directly on the computer, sign documents and send them off without paper.

Cons: I feel that the system is difficult to get through a chart, there are too many clicks and I need to write to verify and compliment the chart.

Has Potential but has design flaws.

Pros: Templates make it easy to describe the HPI. Sometimes it can be good for describing it but doesn't always include all possibilities.

Cons: Some things are not intuitive. The BOXES! It generates things to have you do later, and then send it to your staff, and your staff send back to you, and send back to the staff... Yes a lot of back and forth and not efficient.

The sales completely misrepresent their product.

Pros: The EMR help create a note efficiently with templates and macros. Refilling prescriptions is easy, after figuring out what to refill.

Cons: The RCM/PM is terrible! I'm paying them a fortune and they are doing nothing. All the work is punted back to the biller. The EMR's biggest problems are seeing when an Rx was last refilled, having to search in different areas for messages, and too many steps involved in accomplishing some tasks.

Pros: This software is very user friendly. We are using them in out clinic, ED, and IP space with no issues. There is a learning curve, like any EHR, but once your staff get it there is no turning back. Within 60 days of going live our hospital revenue increased by 11%. Their customer service is amazing, our account manager is on site every month and calls in weekly. I didn't get this from Epic, CPSI, or Meditech!

Cons: I would like to see more people within their CSC. This company is growing fast, and a few extra hands to assist with questions would be beneficial.

Overall: Increased revenue, better quality indicators, MU and MIPS support, revenue cycle support

Comments: This is an adequate emr. There are certainly worse emrs on the market that are more cumbersome but there are also several emrs on the marketplace that are much better once you learn to use them

Pros: This emr enables a patient portal, saved findings and saved phrases. Some labs interface with the program.

Cons: Orders faxed to your office go into a queue and are not easily accessible real time. Mistakes can be made regarding scanning documents to the wrong patient. Help via phone is not convenient for real time office practice. Other emrs offer better support. HOWEVER, the biggest issues involve selecting a diagnosis rather than an icd 10, the inability to link meds with multiple diagnoses, the way medications are reviewed, difficulty in reviewing ice 10 from the problem list, amending notes and also how to review historic documents.

Comments: RUN AWAY!!! RUN AWAY!!!

Pros: I like that it tells you what quality measures need to be met... I like that you can take a chart photo and upload it from your smartphone....That's about it.

Cons: Being able to fax back and forth with our nursing homes is a joke. It takes almost 10 steps for every fax. When we do in house labs, we enter the lab, complete the lab, save the lab, close the lab...then an hour later it is back in a "bucket" to be closed. When I have complained about all these steps I have been told its basically a checks and balances system. Everything that we need to do in our office seems to have three to four extra steps from our old vendor. They promised to do all of our billing...well that's a joke. The bill for obvious things and then write off everything else. We are losing money on a daily basis due to this. There truly isn't a thing about this software that I like. I have stated that the next time that I am out looking for a job, that I will ask them who their vendor is, and if they say "Athena", I'm walking out. I never want to have anything to do with this company again.

Pros: Combination of billing functionality, EHR and practice management software. Percentage of revenue is charged: if we don't get paid, they don't get paid. Exceedingly robust system with limitless opportunities for expansion and customizing. Excellent customer service.

Cons: Very few things to dislike. When problems require the Rules team to get involved, the process can take weeks. As an example, our state Medicaid recently changed their claim formatting requirements. It becomes a real problem for Athena to take weeks for Rules to make claim formatting compliant.

Pros: For a new small practice, multiple features that allow me to run lean on staff with the automated options. I like the connectivity via the online portal and uploading new patient paperwork. Decreases significant amount of time.

Comments: I do not recommend Athena for anyone.

Pros: Ability to pull assessment and plans from previous notes into the present note which decreases documentation time.

Cons: 1. I was told that Athena does billing and therefore, makes sure claims are clean when they go out. This is not the case. Athena does not do any billing but merely serves as a clearing house for claims and does posting. Athena will also sometimes change items on claims incorrectly, such as place of service, and this will cause claims to be rejected. 2. Also, I was told that I was ready to go live with Athena, only to find out that various insurance information, NPI numbers for providers, etc., had not been entered correctly and caused claims to be held up. 3. I was also told that Athena has pediatric templates (what are called encounter plans) that are consistent with Bright Futures, the guidelines per the American Academy of Pediatrics. These did not exist. The pediatrician has to develop the encounter plans without any template whatsoever. 4. My time seeing patients is longer, I have had to hire a biller and scribe to assist with the additional work and Athena did not compensate me for the lost revenue I incurred because Athena held up claims with their errors for several months before my biller caught the mistake.

Comments: Get a someone on the phone to support your issue is a MAZE to navigate.

Pros: Excellent EMR software. Accessibility from anywhere. Once you get acquainted with the product you like it.

Cons: Billing is horrible. You are misled that by paying over 7% they do the billing. Wrong, you have to do it all. All they do is send it, post it and collect. ANY ISSUE with billing is yours. So you still need a biller. (Add5-6%to your billing costs). Support staff are horrible and inexperienced. I startted in January and its now October ... I am happy with the DOCTOR part, the financial part is a DISASTER.

Comments: They have a wide array of reports, especially billing and RCM reports. Chronic Care Mgt is developed and usable. They offer a number of training videos and if the staff is given the time to watch them, then in time one can become conversant in using the software. But there is an initially high learning curve even with having experience with other EHR/PMS.

Pros: The EHR/PMS is a unified system that is very all-encompassing and is capable of serving the needs of a broad number of specialties as well as primary care.

Cons: The EHR attempts to do too much and has become too complex in its workings. As a result, when you need assistance on most anything, you will have to create a case for further assistance. I particularly found this very frustrating in trying to resolve A/R issues such as unpostables or unallocated ERAs; especially in light of the fact that Athena earns a percentage of all practi ce revenue and is supposed to be a partner in the initial processing and reviewing of claims, denials and rejections. I found very litte to actually point to what was being done on the front end by their billing personnel.

Once you get past the learning curve Athena is good!

Comments: Eventually, we learned to work with Athena and for the most part it works quite well. Sadly we couldn't continue to use Athena because they wouldn't do J-code carve outs.

Pros: Electronic scanning/faxing. This is genius! The system does a lot electronically which helped us to trim our staff.

Cons: Billing is okay. Occasionally claims would be in Athena Hold and I wouldn't know they were there until they were past timely filing limits. After many phone calls, Athena couldn't give a good reason why they weren't dropped. Athena writes charges off after a certain time period. That's not good. Patient charge screens can be very difficult to interpret. Claims that are worked by Athena are no help at all. They leave pointless notes on the claims and don't actually resolve the issue. It takes our billing lady one phone call and she gets it taken care of.

It seems like Athena went out of their way to make an incredibly complicated system

Pros: EMR system is okay but definitely not superior to competitors including the free EMRs out there

Cons: The system is not intuitive at all. I had to call customer support for just about everything including just to verify that I had done things correctly as I learned early on that even if it appeared like something was done correctly, it wasn't- I either wasn't in the correct "area" or I didn't then go to step 2 (for things that really don't need to have more than one step!) There are several areas in the system where you can leave notes that appear to be communication notes with the Athena staff- but NOOOOooo, these notes just sit there for your own amusement. If you want Athena staff to do something or be aware of something, you better call (and chances are you'll get customer support based in India FYI).

Comments: It was once a good company. Now they make unacceptably frequent (and serious) mistakes. They have also absconded on responsibility by doing away with individual account agents. There used to be one individual responsible for our account, and we went to her with any problems. Now they have teams of useless agents that are responsible for everything as a group. Which means no one is responsible. And nothing gets fixed.

Pros: It used to provide very comprehensive service and was easily navigable. It also used to have American employees who were concerned with fixing their mistakes.

Cons: They have apparently gone cheap on programmers and customer service agents, outsourcing to somewhere in southeast asia. What used to be quick and easy now is time-consuming and laborious. We've had to hire an extra employee because of one unfortunate change that Athena made two years ago, getting rid of the calendar sidebar so that you have to refresh every time you want to go from a patients chart back to the daily calendar to process all the patients. They promise over and over again they are working on fixing it. Two years later, they still have figured it out.

Comments: Overall, Athena is good enough to select as an EMR for urgent care after you put in hundreds of hours to get it set up how you would like it. If just starting out, Athena would not be my first choice. There are other better options that perform better and costs less. Once you start with Athena, it's hard to switch EMR's bc of the lockbox and the fact of losing all patient data.

Pros: - I like the ability to customize "most things" in Athena. It would be nice to have more flexibility to customize layouts like the classic version of Athena. - Once you create templates, the charting can be completed fairly quickly. - Epocrates is built into the Athena order screen.

Cons: - Only 1 person at a time may enter and/or complete orders. - Expensive % of collections cost. - Not geared towards Urgent Care. - Minimal reporting options for the clinical side.

Cons: Support was terrible once they sign you on (prior to that they will tell you stuff to bait you in). they also took for money deposit and then left me high and dry. I could not get calls back and emails were responded to 1-2 days late. The implementation specialist person they assigned to me was a bit clueless and was too busy to help. Instead of helping you, they give you more work to do. When i realized that the service was going to be terrible and that they were just going after easy money (the easily reimbursed charges), I told them i did not want their service. Now, they refuse to reimburse money they took (deposit) which was supposed to be refundable... despite having no right to it (supposed to be charged a percentage of charges collected right). For anyone starting a practice or trying to build one, just think twice before you use them. Will be filing a complaints regarding their borderline fraudulent practice with local district attorney.

Cons: This company grew too large. They are now just focused on getting a percentage of your collections, even if they were cash paying patients, even if they were incentive payments from medicare. The tech support is horrible. They don't even know how to use the EMR and you receive no training. Your set up mainly consists of them figuring out how to get all your collections to go their "lockbox" where they will always have access to it.

Comments: Popular system used by a lot of practices, so integrates really nicely with a lot of systems and has had plenty of use to get all the bugs worked out.

Pros: AthenaHealth's EMR looks great and has all of the functionality one would want. There is a big focus on billing and the billing algorithms are continuously updated to make sure practices bill and get reimbursed as efficiently as possible. Integrates with Chiron for easy telemedicine accessibility.

Cons: It is a great way to view your records and communicate with the provider, but if you are a group that takes care of the elderly it can be difficult for the patient to use.

Comments: We haven't gone live yet so we don't know how well we like it.

Pros: So we like our customer service with the onboarding. They have an incentive to help us make money. We look forward to working with them.

Cons: The customer service can be slow to answer questions but answers are usually given within the day. We don't know exactly what we don't like yet.

Comments: Product/company has not lived up to the promises made to increase cash flow. It's difficult to have control over claims and numerous times we found service items that were written off by Athena rather than being researched for additional reimbursement. We feel Athena is not a good match for a small practice. Cost of numerous features that a small practice does not utilize makes the cost of Athena too expensive.

Pros: Insurance eligibility checking system. Data entry of claims easy to navigate. Basic scheduling was ok.

Cons: Having funds go to your specific bank, then having to transfer monies making cash flow delay for the practice by several days. Very time consuming to find correct insurance plans, need a way to identify insurance payor by EDI number. Customer service needs required long hold times and we feel this was a significantly poor use of our staff time.

Comments: Athena is a great product if you are just going to use it and do the billing on your own (in house). The monthly cost is outrageous given all of the errors they make on posting and the terrible customer support. We also experienced many issues with the reminder call service leaving blank or incorrect messages. I can say that the program is VERY easy to navigate, the patient portal is a nice layout, the interfaces work very well for labs, faxes and pharmacy requests. Overall I would not recommend Athena to anyone because of the cost and the horrible customer service and repeated billing mistakes.

Pros: user friendly sorts electronic faxes electronic orders assists with MU reporting nice/patient friendly patient portal appointment reminders AR/productivity reports are easy to read and run

Cons: customer service is severely lacking chronic problems with posting payments EOB erros document issues the cost is crazy high issues with reminder calls not being sent correctly

Comments: This is not recommended for a small provider office or if you are using a different software for documentation of the patients health history.

Pros: I cant say that this product has any easy aspect to it. It does have a nice eye friendly view but has many difficult ways to do things.

Cons: If you want to print any reports you have to do this in excel. If you have any staff that are not savy in Excel it makes it more difficult to be able to function daily in the office. It takes a long time to learn to do their reporting and even then you have to be a genius!

Comments: Athena is customizable and assists our practice in every aspect. Having our billing and our EHR in one system that has a great support system really makes everyone's job easier.

Pros: Athena has really made my job as billing coordinator so easy. I am able to help my physicians improve their dictation which allows me to more accurately bill for the procedures they perform. Plus Athena follows up on my claims!

Cons: Sometimes Athena has holds or denial reason that may not be the most accurate. I have to reach out to Athena to assist in resolving the issues. (which is very easy to do) We also have to customize our templates to fit our specialty and services we provide. Once we get the templates fixed, it makes dictating so much easier.

Comments: It is a great system, a lot to learn at first but once you learn the system it is easy to use, and everything flows. When in the chart everything is there and easy to find, you go the the patients demographics area and again anything demo or insurance, billing etc is all there. Great system, I've been using athena since 2012 and it is top notch.

Pros: Ease of use. Great tracking tools, robust templates and reporting system. Visually easy to follow. At any point in the visit you can see where the patient is at and for how long.

Cons: I wish it contained its own LIS (Lab Information System). Other than coming up with this I cannot think of any Cons.

Pros: Super easy to learn and use. This program takes a lot of the guess work out of processes providing detailed directions, videos and customer service support. Claims are easy to create and bill out. The A\R functionality of it is absolutely amazing.

Cons: There are no true Cons to this program. If there is every an issue, ATHENA works diligently to rectify any negative situations.

Comments: Help is too hard to get even for easy questions. And it seems each person you get to will tell you that is not their area of knowledge

Pros: For the physician, templates are easy to make and the notes are very readable. Easy to navigate thru an encounter note.

Cons: NO help with billing. Payers were not set up correctly after multiple calls and hours on the phone. Then you are left to fix things yourself and figure out all the "kick" codes to resubmit. Definitely NOT the RCM that they advertise

Comments: Marketed as a product for multiple disciplines and specialties, however, does not support occupational therapy services. OTs are told to use PT templates and configurations despite (1) potential conflicts with documentation for reimbursement and (2) being initially told that OTs were a supported discipline. Account managers are not useful as they refer back to the service center for all issues. It is an endless cycle. Not knowingly, we were not set up properly before launch, and despite repeatedly telling the AM that the system wasn't sufficient for us and that we had to work harder to make it work for us, 7 months later we find that ours is not configured as it should have been. This was discovered after connecting in The community on The resource hub, which is another brush off that The managers refer clients to repeatedly, as well add o-help. There has been no response on this or even consideration of trying to keep a client happy by an account manager. The system is severely lacking and counterintuitive, and if individuals make suggestions for improvement, they are "voted on" for consideration, even if the suggestions or requests are standard in the industry or required by governing bodies. Many requests and improvements are not made. We truly question is up to date and compliant. Clients are told to create templates, or modify current (such as a standard facesheet), by coding them independently. Most medical practitioners (1) are not coders and (2) are not paying for a service that requires more time and effort than less. I was actually told by a higher level account manager that the solution could be to hire an outside coding agency to complete this task (vs it being standard in the existing product or have a dedicated person in Athenahealth that assists with coding needs). The therapist reviews in the hub are not favorable. Individuals considering purchase of system would never know how many years of complaints exist and "make it work" scenarios. Unfortunately, changing EMRs is not simple and quick and is often costly. The billing portion is fair but mistakes are still made with submission requiring extra time in "hold" and delays in reimbursement. AthenaClinicals is just horrible. There is a definite environment fostered within Athena that is brush off, dodge issues, let clients figure it out, and if they leave "oh well." We are disheartened and infuriated at the same time. If our practice had the same reviews, both public and internally, I would be very ashamed, take a step back, and wonder where things went wrong, let alone REALLY wrong. Bottomline: if anyone sees this who is considering Athena, regardless of discipline, go with another service provider. We as existing clients see ALOT in the community feedback on our resource hub. You will be entering something that you will then be prepared to get out of with excess cost.

Pros: Practice management reports and features are in abundance if that is your priority. The reminder call system does what it is supposed to. Community section in resource hub lets you know that others are just as frustrated and upset. Most of the customer service reps are very pleasant and helpful when the functionality or configuration is there; of it is sub par and missing, they do apologize.

Cons: The clinical documentation product is terrible. Supports physician- based practices vs rehab/OT/PT (though clients can see comments on product for all disciplines). Lack of quality templates that are compliant with regulatory agency requirements. Lack of feedback options. Lack of support. Account managers do not actually help to manage any issues you have with product. Very time consuming to call in for support repeatedly. Athenahealth clearly does not review feedback on community resource hub. Individuals that process Athenafax can be lazy and not process items with documents clearly identified with Athena identifiers/ printing, leaving in review for practice to handle (extra work). Honestly...too many cons to list.

Comments: please do your research and make sure you know what you are getting. I am sure for some, this works great, but if you have issues or quirky IPA, getting Athena to help to make your claims go through can be painful. Too many clicks on PM system to get things done quickly. Better layout of the calendar for schedule would be nice.

Pros: good customer service team - though sometimes cannot resolve issue right away, always courteous and willing to help

Cons: cumbersome with multiple back and forth to make changes specific to your practice needs. Their insurance AR may look good, but that's because if they cannot figure something out, they will send a statement to the patients so the AR for "self pay" is outrageous.

Pros: Cloud-based. Easy install and deployment. Has everything an EMR needs to have from Registration, Clinical Documentation to Billing.

Cons: Athena was originally used as a practice management tool. There seems to be some lacking in simple functionalities. For example, the lack of a search functionality in the report tools. There are too many steps and clicks to try to get to a patient's chart. Slow response from customer service. Put in a request to build an interface and they told me that it would take over 3 months to assign an engineer to my ticket. That's not including the time it would take them to put it in place.

Athena health very time consuming to use, lack of direction provided from athena health as to flow and productivity.

Comments: Athena has been a real disappointment and hassle to deal with. I spend more time on Athena EMR then I do with patients. This was not the case with out other two EMR systems. We just wanted to combine billing and patient's notes in one system thus we switched to Athena.

Pros: It is an EMR system to use, can communicate with patients on the portal but have not way of avoiding portal communication.

Cons: Lack of knowledge when you call for support at Athena. Many times I call for assistance and the have no answer and have to get back to you. Inefficient. They state you make more money with them since they have high rate of patient collection. However, we have more patients then ever before with outstanding bills and Athena fail to follow up on patients and these unpaid balances. There is no support for that. Once you sign up for Athena they drop your support and will switch you randomly to new managers to start all over since they cannot follow through. It takes weeks to have a support session with anyone that has some knowledge of the system. They have too many clients and not enough support. After a while, you become numb to it all and give up hope that it will be ever efficient and make practicing easier.

Pros: Adding orders to the diagnosis is simple and quick. The general aesthetic is nice to look at and it is simple to learn and navigate.

Cons: It would be easier to have the option to toggle between patients instead of returning to the main screen. It would also be more efficient to search and input ICD 10 codes in Athena rather than using Google to search for the codes.

Comments: I started working w/Athena in Aug 2016. Since then our Admin has been advising me to call or web chat, search online & use the search features Athena has to offer. I have NEVER gotten a question resolved by calling. I end up walking the "helper" through the features & page. This was very upsetting. I've been put on hold for 20 minutes at a time while an "advisor" looks up a solution in their manual. As a result, I hung up in frustration. I then received an e-mail confirming my problem had been resolved. What a joke! That seems like it is just to appease the numbers needed. There are no training manuals, no courses to take & definitely nobody to teach a person how to use this program. A rep. who no longer works for Athena set us up years ago. This is not geared towards a specific practice, which is even more frustrating. Hopefully, you can respect the time I took to write this review & improve your program. It would be great to receive training as well, or at least an instruction manual.

Pros: billing features are simple; insurance program automatically runs insurances to see if they are active

Cons: I've been in Ophthalmology for over 15 years. As a scheduling manager, the features are not user-friendly, as I have worked with 4 different programs. Look to NextGen for template applications & features. It would be great to implement them to Athena. There are color coded columns, ability to apply templates over templates without taking out exception days, ability to write a VISIBLE book note at the top of the doctor's schedule to alert the schedules, etc. Also, the features include looking a multiple doctors schedules at a time and even ability to view several different books or multiple doctors!

Comments: Overall, the system is fine. (It's better than what we did have). Calling Athenahelp is usually a struggle that doesn't produce much result and leaves you disappointed. I think that Athena chat could benefit greatly from the ability to enter your extension or location. A lot of our doctors travel to different offices and when you need to reach the staff, it is hard to know where they are. It would be great it Athena chat, you could put a personalized status. Instead of just the drop down of "available, busy for 1 hour, etc". It would be great if we could personalize it to say "ext. 555" or something.

Pros: Printing school/work notes & visit summaries at the end of the visit is convenient. Automated phone calls, portal communication & ease are both very positive assets for Athena. Charge entry and the tools available to process claims are very helpful as well.

Cons: "Tasks/buckets" and their routing leave a lot to be desired. Internal communications are not routed to the originating department & then must be asked back to them by other departments. Labeling documents could also use the ability to attach more than one order to results. When you have multiple lab results coming back on one fax and you can only attach it to one order, that leaves a lot of orders look as if they are unfulfilled.

Comments: Overall there are many good qualities with Athenahealth. I would recommend it to my collegues.

Pros: Appointment scheduling is pretty user-friendly. It would be helpful to have a more defined weekly page with better shading or coloring for a quick weekly glance. I like the appointment waiting list. I also like the drop-down menus.

Cons: I am not fond of the Templets. There needs to be a way to allow notes on the templates for follow up. It is difficult to see what templets are being used and which ones need to be rolled back. Also, the I do not think learning portal is not very helpful, and there needs to be a better training program especially for templets. It would be helpful to have a reminder that pops up for alerts for billing or appointments or admin. The reminder calls sometimes cut off. There need to be better follow-ups on complicated claims.

Comments: User on current streamline for 6-8 months. Classic for about a year. TEDIOUS!!!! Too much scrolling and clicking. Orders can be difficult to hone down and there is no options for "favorites" If you only use one lab, you are ok. If you need 2-3 labs then it will slow your workflow. Prescription writing and history is also slow and tedious.

Pros: Managing quality markers; outstanding billing

Cons: Distracting, noisy, difficult to impossible to customize in an enterprise environment. SLOWED my productivity overall and has not recovered. Frequent (weekly) times that server connectivity is spotty though they usually recover fairly quickly (not today)

Comments: The foundation is good, the support could be better.

Pros: Flows overall efficiently, well integrated system; scheduling, clinic notes, billing, patient portal.

Cons: The things that don't work or need tweaking, do not get resolved quickly. The Past medical history section, flow sheets, quality management sections take a long time to load, the pages glitch and stall - really affect efficiency. Generating reliable data in the quality metrics is difficult and similar reports yield different data which questions the validity of the reporting. Some canned reports I've found included the mid-level providers but didn't provide data on the physicians. Solving these problems is difficult and time consuming; a ticket can take weeks to be assigned, then reassigned after further questions.

Comments: Athena benefits are practice with efficient billing, scheduling and payments processing.

Pros: Patient scheduling is easy. Patient billing is very quick and efficient. Posting and billing issues are resolved on a timely basis.

Cons: The Appointment Wait List is not user friendly. There is no back button - meaning you cannot go back to a previous page.

Comments: We are very pleased with Athena Health. It facilitates our work and helps us to be very efficient.

Pros: Ease of use. Availability of information. Metrics

Cons: Sentinel Dashboard Metrics: my employees question the accuracy and validity of Athena Metrics. We use these Metrics to manage their performance and provide quarterly bonuses. I need to spend a lot of time validating the data and demonstrating the accuracy of the metrics. Would be great if Athena provided a tools that explains all metrics to employees, how they are measured and what they can do to improve performance.

Athena is an arrogant company.

Comments: It is a great product as long as you don¿t mind changing your practice to align with Athena¿s product and you are willing to learn all about it (thru videos and handouts) in order to train your entire staff on how to get a square peg (your practice) to fit into a round hole (AthenaNet). Prior to going live, Athena didn¿t bother to find out how we operated or what tools we were currently utilizing. Here we are several months into implementation and we still don¿t have everything we need. It not uncommon to hear, ¿Our tools aren¿t as robust as what you were doing¿. We have even been told, ¿I don¿t think we will ever get there.¿ Another standard answer is, ¿There is a training video to watch¿ or ¿Try O-help¿. So you waste a lot of time trying to find answers to your questions which is difficult because Athena has their own language. And, once again, this would be resolved if only they took the time to learn your business in the first place.

Pros: Great concept, but A LONG way from being a great product.

Comments: It is a great system if you are a huge practice with multiple locations. If you are like me and you are in pediatrics.... don't use Athena. It would be nice if they listened to the people (who use the system) and create a better product to make the workflow better.

Cons: Too many clicks to get to what you need Insurance eligibility issues The implementation and training process is not informative at all and was limited to a 1hr phone call per week. No one on one training. The online classes are useless.

Comments: My experience with Athena was not the best. I had a difficult time at the beginning just getting the necessary training to use and understand the system. I had to utilize other colleagues knowledge of the system to get somewhat of an understanding how to navigate through the system to perform desired task. Once getting an understanding of the program, it was easy to navigate and document in a timely manner.

Comments: We have used Athena for almost 5 years and it has helped us to run our practice so much more smoothly. The system works so well from scheduling to check out for each patient. When scheduling and entering insurance, a practice can immediately see if the insurance is valid (we barely remember those annoying calls to verify insurance), the medical record allows the patient to move through the office smoothly allowing everyone involved to enter the relevant information. In the past, we had problems with insurers which seemed to continually refuse to pay certain claims no matter how many times we corrected them. With Athena's scrubbing of claims they drop and get paid extremely quickly. Some of those "difficult" insurers are now top five payers!! The automated reminder and balance calls have freed up staff to attend to the increased patient flow. We have been so happy with Athena from day one, can't say enough good things about this system!

Pros: Reminder calls, insurance validation, eligibility and phone daily report, ticklers that remind patient to schedule an appointment if not done at check out, ease of entering/dropping claims, ability to generate useful and custom reports, day end review allows you to see if any claims need corrections immediately

Cons: Streamlined version seems to require more clicks and sometimes the co-pay is not applied to the date it is paid which can be confusing

Comments: Continues to evolve. Had been using it for about 6 years now. We had signed a contract in 2011. In 2013, certainly be started getting charged for every single" closed loop" order, example each E prescription was charged 1 dollar. Each lab value was charged. If I ordered CBC, CMP, A1c, lipids for 1 patient, I was charged. This became quite expensive. This forces us to use paper prescriptions instead of the e-prescriptions. We paid per provider at the time of registration to enroll with sure scripts. We write about 40,000 prescriptions every year. As you could imagine, this becomes expensive fairly quickly.

Pros: Cloud based

Cons: Expensive

Recommendations to other buyers: Carefully look at the contract. We are getting charged per eRx!

Comments: We have been using Athena for almost 4 years. The ease of use, ability to just connect to the internet wherever we are is a huge plus. Also, we do not need to have a server room, pay for costly tech support people to be on standby is also a great selling point. The ability to run pretty much any type of report from front end to back end in real time helps see the direction and trends the practice is going through.

Pros: Transparency of the EMR is wonderful! Ability to see real time claims, payments, overall status in a payment cycle. Ease of use for clinical staff, doctors has really cut down on our charting. Athena lets you customize your charts, add templates, and will create interfaces with other programs you may use.

Recommendations to other buyers: Stop shopping around, it is as great as they say. What do you have to loose?

Comments: not user-friendly initially but after you learn how to go through documenting in it, it becomes easier. The major disappointment was how slow the website would be and crash a lot and would lose all your information if you didn't save. I don't recall it having an automatic save every 2 min or so option.

Comments: I've been utilizing this product for approx. six months. It is quite easy to learn the basics, and I like that the product is customizable in so many ways. As with all EMRs, there is a learning curve - initial basic usability comes quite easily. I have not yet learned all the nuances and tricks. Most things are common sense. We are a free clinic, and therefore do not utilize the entirety of billing. Athena was kind enough to provide this product for us - I admire the company for this. This EHR has dramatically helped the continuity of care for complex patients. We have a large number of volunteer providers coming into our clinic periodically - we need an EHR that is user-friendly to accommodate these volunteers. The quality tracking is helpful. I like that I can save physical exams for common complaints, and customize assessment/plans and do the macros for patient instructions. We are still figuring out things like generating letters, utilizing patient education handouts, etc.

Pros: Customizable physical exams and treatment plans. Flowsheet ability for a variety of diagnoses. Reporting capability is easy. Downtime is negligible. Overall very robust EHR

Cons: Minor issues - would like ability to group labs (e.g. labs ordered today but to be done in 6 weeks - my poor nurse has to deal with all of these). Would like something on med list or status for patients who are currently breastfeeding. Would like LMP right on check-in/vitals screen for women.

Comments: I feel the software compared to other EMR is pretty easy to use. Athenanet is always doing updates trying to improve the process. They have just done major upgrades in the last couple of months. Their customer service and tech support are always there when needed.

Cons: When they did the upgrades you now cannot see the refills on the scripts unless you go into the full encounter or when filled. Also, you use to be able to cut and paste in all areas within intake and exam sections and now you cannot. Meds cannot be copied and pasted into other fills like before.

Comments: Overall I really like this system. I am not a computer person and I do my own billing. I was able to teach myself how to use the system. It is a little complicated to enter all the patient information and confirm the insurance information. However, once the patient is in the system, I can do weeks billing for 40 patients in one hour.

Pros: Easy to use once the patient is registered into the system. Some of the reports are too complicated for my needs but would be good for a larger practice. The customer support people are great when you are trying to learn the system. You are also assigned a contact person who follows up with you weekly or monthly depending on your needs. My person has been very helpful. The payments come in quickly and the money is directly deposited in your bank account -- this insures a more steady cash flow.

Cons: I was told that there would be more customer support for unpaid claims collection -- when the insurance refuses payment. There has not been as much support as I hoped there would be. Since I have a small practice, there are more parts to the system than I need. I wish there was a way to turn off those functions. For example, clients pay me their co-pay directly, so I don't need the billing function. I can block it in the system, but the payments show up as unpaid balances and there is no way to erase those amounts. To be fair, this is also because I do not want to log in the system for each client and enter the co-pays at each visit -- so I am not really using the system as designed. The charge per month seems high to me -- you can not pay less than $ / month. I wish there were a pro-rated scale based on a number of payments -- a percentage of what I actually receive.

Recommendations to other buyers: This is a very good billing system. Helpful support people and quick payments. I worked with several smaller billing services in the past -- one went out of business suddenly and never told me -- this was a nightmare. I appreciate that Athenahealth is a large and established company with a long record in the business and established protocols.

Comments: The ease of the everyday use of this program is great. Very user-friendly and quick to enter information. It also is great about not letting you move on to the next screen until you have all of the important information. The problem I have is that because we are such a small practice the amount we have tied up in claims needing work on Athena's end is making it very hard to flourish without those payments.

Pros: User friendly quick check in and out time

Cons: issue with how quickly claims are worked.

Comments: I love Athena! It's easy to use and is MUCH better than our previous EMR system. I love the reporting capabilities. The CSC is always helpful, and I love the new option to enter cases online versus being on the phone!

Pros: Great reporting capabilities - I used to have to manually enter info on spreadsheets, but Athena has tons of great reports built and you can customize your own reports as well. Easy to use! The system is very robust and Athena does a good job of staying ahead of the game regarding new and future law/regulation/requirement changes.

Cons: The medication section of Intake is time consuming because we have to click on each medication to see if it's a current med or historical and we need to Hide it. We would love to see more customization of the patient portal so we could build our own questions to match what we ask on our printed Health History forms and have the info populate the correct fields in Athena.

Recommendations to other buyers: Great EMR system!

Comments: Our office went live with Athena Communicator and Collector in September of 2013. We had previously used 2 other billers and schedulers/management systems at that point and I have to say we are all glad that we chose Athena. The customer service department and our implementation team were beyond helpful. We appreciate that Athena is ever changing, and always looking to improve the ease of business and quality of care. As we know, no product is ever perfect, but Athena comes pretty darn close. The team at Athena actively listens to concerns and suggestions from their customers. I have dealt with many companies who "understand your struggle" but can't do anything about it or "are very sorry, but that's just the way it is". Athena, is NOT that type of company. They have interactive message boards that you can talk to other practices having issues and also Athena team members, so together a plan can be created to alleviate the problems you are having. Not to say EVERYTHING can be as perfect as you want it, but there have been enough changes in Athena where the direct action was taken from a concern or complaint that makes us as a customer feels valued and understood. A real testament to Athena should be that we looked at their Clinicals product in 2013, but our provider didn't see enough of what he was looking for to change from our current EMR to Athena Clinicals at that time. However, at the end of 2016 we revisited the idea and did some more demos, the Clinical product has changed so much (in a good way) that we have chosen to switch and are looking at implementation in March of 2017. All of our office staff and our providers feel that Athena is a solid product that helps us streamline our workflows and provide better patient care. We are very excited to embark on our next Athena journey and couldn't be happier with the products and support.

Pros: Ease of Use, Rarely any system downtimes or system issues, Receptive customer service and account managers, Transparency you can see everything that has happened and who did it

Cons: This product is the most costly that we have used, however, we have definitely made more in revenue by using Athena than not.

Comments: EMRs are dinosaurs and no other industry would accept the dysfunction that we do (because CMS forces us to). Athena updated in May 2016 and now it is even more functional. I have a solo practice. I have ADD and scanning up and down the page to add details was exhausting. Now the sections (Review/HPI/ROS/PE/A&P) are at the top and I can go back and forth easily. If the patient gives me more details during the A and P then I just click on HPI and add the details, then click on A and P again. No scanning. While I am working on the progress note, I can go to diagnosis list, med list, lab and x-ray results, previous visits without going out of the note. The day is much less painful. Unfortunately, I am paying way too much and they will not renegotiate so be aggressive before you sign up. Customer support is good. As the provider base has grown, the support gets less effective. I know more than many of the support staff. They tell me things cannot be done and I have to figure out, often by mistake, how to do what I want. The implementation coordinator did not understand much of what she was doing and after implementation, it is almost painful to fix basic things. Much of it has not been fixed. The first year I almost went under financially and I spent all my savings to survive. My revenues are still not what they were. It did not help that Athena lost $ worth of checks and did not help me get them re-issued.

Pros: Ease of completing progress notes. Really really easy referrals. Accessibility of lab and imaging results. Consult notes not lost. Nothing lost. Confirmations by the system. Eligibility checked repeatedly. They have an interface with all the labs already so you don't have to pay to reinvent the wheel.

Cons: I hate the letter format and cannot get it fixed. The financial piece promised much more than it actually does.

Recommendations to other buyers: Negotiate the price. What may sound reasonable probably is too much. Be sure your billers are well oriented to the process.

It's not a difficult program to use but it takes a lot of extra steps to get to where you need to be.

Comments: It takes a lot of steps to get to the screen that you need. Sometimes when you call to get help, it takes 3 people and being on hold for about 15-30 minutes before you get your problem take care of.

Pros: it's user friendly. I've only been using it for 4 months and it didn't take me that long to learn it. There's still a lot that I need to learn but I have the basics down.

Cons: all the extra steps that you have to go through. I also don't like the fact that when a patient pays for their office visit copay they transfer it to other open invoices instead of keeping it for that DOS. It makes it very difficult to figure out where the payment was posted

Recommendations to other buyers: I've only used 1 other system besides this one. I'm sure that there's worse ones out there.

Comments: This is my second EHR for my practice and I also use Epic for inpatient work at hospital. I have looked at many EHRs and there is no such thing as the perfect one. However, Athena meets my needs most of the time and is by far the best of the bunch I have encountered to date.

Pros: Fairly easy to use and fairly Mac friendly. The billing side of the service is fantastic and best in class as far as I can tell. They could not do a better job of making sure I get all of my money - payments as well as incentives.

Cons: Template and Macro generation is a bit clunky. Really all the same stuff one can encounter with just about any EHR.

Recommendations to other buyers: Did you get your $40,000 of free money incentives from the government for jumping into EHR? Are you aware that MACRA and MIPS predict that if you are in private practice they are betting on you failing to meet bonus requirements? If you are independently wealthy and can afford to take a pay cut over the coming years, more power to you. If you run your practice as a business, wish to stay independent, and cash flow matters to you, then do yourself a favor and take a closer look at Athena.

Comments: Athena is very user friendly and has the key elements for a successful transition to EHR. It is fairly pediatric friendly, though check in could be improved for kids. The portal is a nice feature for parents but we are still working on what gets "published" on it. The support folks are hit or miss. You do have to wait and they can't always fix it in real time. However, they are constantly improving!

Pros: Quick easy documentation. Nice pediatric features.

Cons: Too many clicks for documenting vaccines. Tough to find old documents, you have to use a clumsy search tool.

Comments: ATHENA IS A GOOD PROGRAM AND FAIRLY EASY TO FIND YOUR WAY AROUND IN IT.

Pros: IT CHECKS MOST INSURANCES FOR YOU, IT LETS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU MISSED IN A PATIENTS CHART, IT GIVES YOU MANY OPTIONS TO SEARCH A PATIENT

Cons: IT DOESN'T POST UNAPPLIED AMOUNT TO PATIENTS ACCOUNTS AND THEY GET BILLS GENERATED AND SENT OUT FOR BALANCES THEY PREVIOUSLY PAID. IT RUNS EXTREMELY SLOW AND DOESN'T WANT TO PICK UP THE CREDIT CARD MACHINE SO IT CAN BE USED ON EVERY TRANSACTION.

Comments: Overall, Athena is really good at helping you do everything you need to do in order to take care of your patients. Their visit summaries and their order is great, claim billing is easy, and this EMR has a lot of great features.

Pros: Ease of claim billing, check-in process flows really well, and the in-take is also easy all you have to do is follow the steps. Like how the system does confirmation calls, and they provide patient portal access which a lot of our patients love.

Cons: The only con I have is sometimes if there is a claim with a specific error, you really have to spend time to push it through, and if there is an Athena rule in place, you have to get a few people involved.

Recommendations to other buyers: Honestly, great product. If there is something that isn't working or you don't understand, you have to ask the questions in order to resolve it. Their help line never has a long wait and they are really helpful with most questions.
