Pros It's an easy CAT to use, makes managing TMs and TBs quite easy. The price is just fine and is good for personal use. Cons The QA feature is not the best and could be improved, for example it could show a recap of all the issues found and there should be a way to better filter out false positives. July 24, 2019 5.0 Pros The thing I like best about SmartCAT is that I can accomplish everything in one place in CLOUD and FOR FREE there! I'm a very early user of SmartCAT and stick to it ever since my first trial. It's a highly integrated platform that I can set my profile, get contact from clients, accept tasks, do translation, submit translation and get paid all on there. The experience is very intuitive and smooth. Basically anyone who have ever used any CAT tool would master it without problem. SmartCAT also has a large translator and PM pool. I have formed good relationships with many translators and PMs there with whom I have collaborated. It has made my life as a freelancer so easy and I'm really grateful to it. Cons I don't have major pain points about this software, but of course there are places for improvement. For example, it would be great if it could provide a calendar feature for translators so that it could send out-of-office replays to project invitations automatically during the translator is away on vacation. Currently I have to send chat messages to clients manually before I leave for vacations and that's kind of inconvenient. Review Source VB Valentina B. You can use it on any device (laptop, tablet, mobile phone), you only need an Internet connection and that's it. You can have your files always with you, no matter where you are and which device are you using. Cons I am always waiting for them to reintroduce the option to upload more than one file at once, which was very useful in case of huge projects composed by several files. It allowed to avoid waisting time. Cons Management changed the focus of this software to be for businesses, not for translation companies. They don't even mention translation companies on website anymore. They are trying to get rid of translation companies which is very sneaky because we are the ones that helped build this software over the years by providing feedback and funding the software. The software is not well suited for translation companies. We will move away very soon because limited features for translation companies. They can also not be trusted as they changed their fees and model often. The smartwords model is bad. I would advise translation companies to not using this software. There are better options on the market. Translator Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "It's not always as friendly as can be" July 23, 2019 4.0 I used it a few times in the last couple of years but no significant volume of work did come from there. Recently, one of my regular clients changed to Smartcat and I started having work there on a daily basis. Generally, it's a good experience as it's easy to use and we can get a job done very quickly. Pros It's easy to use, payments come promptly and takes the burden out of contacting non paying clients with all the problems that come from it. We can see all our payments and jobs done easily and we know when the money will arrive. Also the translation interface is easy to use, with concordance search and TM lookup tools, as well as segment by segment verification which allows for immediate action on possible errors Cons It would be useful that machine translation could be available, but it depends on project managers and on the way they create the projects. I've seen it working with MT, which is really useful, not because it will be used directly in the translation but simply because it's like having a dictionary in front of your eyes when we just try to remember a specific word. It's like having the cake's recipe, or cooking without it. I guess PMs want to prevent it's abusive use, but for conscious translator it's very practical. Review Source EK Emrullah K. Cons Sometimes I have difficulty in using machine translation in the segments or in setting some glossary option, which sometimes drives me crazy. Still has no option to glue files together. Still shows no progress in words - the progress line is not informative. Still does not work on mobile devices and tablets. In this case it shines, however if I were to work on something big, Smartcat wouldn't be my first choice. Pros It's user-friendly and thus, a great cat to get started with and to work on less demanding tasks. It's very minimalistic so it doesn't intimidate with its features - there are no hidden options to discover after years of doing without. Smartcat is a cloud-based app, so it allows working on basically any machine, including real-time saving, which makes your work blackout- or system failure-proof. Cons Certain web apps may be quite demanding when it comes to resources. Smartcat is one of these as you may see it struggling on less powerful devices. Its functionality is barbarically limited and there is no personalisation option. You either adjust to it or turn around. Sometimes I get an impression as if Smartcat was trying to outsmart me - well, kitty, I sure know my language better, thanks. I like not having to browse through all possible language pairs! - Integrated OCR - by far one of the best things. Huge credits for that. You can work with PDF files and if the quality is good you don't have to worry about buying extra software. Cons The payment service changes from now and then and we are not notified in advance. The search within the translation memory provides little information (i.e., segment confirmed by whom and when) or context. Pros My comments might be a lit bit atypical as I use Smartcat primarily as a pedagogical tool. I teach Japanese to undergraduate students and theory of translation to postgraduate students (with a number of different language pairs and combinations). Smartcat enables the student (or learner) to create a profile (for employability purposes) and to grasp essential principles of working with a CAT tool in a relatively short time. Based on my own experience, my observations of students using Smarcat as well as students' feedback, I can say that the main advantages of this software are: well-structured and intuitive process of creating a project, easy to operate Editor view (with a customizable layout) and revisions record. What is also worth mentioning is the ease of access to the glossary (including adding new terms) and the fact that the glossary can be easily exported for further processing. The software worked relatively well with the Japanese to English language pair and students were able to produce good quality Translation Projects. Cons I am still not sure about some functions that you can find in other CAT tools, for example, how to correct / amend the source text. It is also annoying not being able to split / merge segments as you like. It may not be entirely Smartcat's fault but at times chunks in a different language (usually Russian) appeared when translating from Japanese into English. Review Source AO Andrey O. I'm proud that I contributed to some of them because the Support Team pays attention to all requests and issues we may face when working in Smartcat. Pros I'm a freelancer who is registered with Smartcat to find new projects and potential clients. What I like about Smartcat is that it's easy to share a project with my client. It's an integrated platform where finding clients, working on projects, and getting paid for my work can be done at one site. Cons I haven't been able to actively search for newly posted jobs. The client is the one who always offers me a job, but I'd like to be able to apply for jobs out there from my end too.
