Pros: The ease of use. There's a small learning curve but it's very intuitive. Serves my purposes very well and is much less expensive than most 2D CAD apps.

Cons: Sometimes I find when objects are aligned on the screen, they are not aligned when printed. This could be an issue with my printer driver. This is a minor issue that does not occur often.

Overall: It makes my job easier because of my ability to complete basic CAD drawings quickly and easily.

Hi Tom, thank you for the great review! The alignment issue you speak of isn't one we've heard of, if you could send us an example to support@microspot.co.uk we would happy investigate this for you :)

Been using MacDraft since version 1 and still super happy with it :)

Pros: I like that it is simple and doesn't require know and full blown CAD program. But If you need to go full blown CAD you can!

Cons: Is it does not let you know if you have a DWG or DXF it can not open only because you don't have enough memory available since they are too big or heavy?

Pros: Its affordability and simple basic tools without over complication. Ease of use, and clear layout, No gimmicks and just a professional package

Cons: Design of buttons and general interface a little clumsy. Can be a little crowded out there. Allow more flexibility for individual styles.

Pros: The update is consistent with features of previous versions. I use it to draft details specifications and than render into those details, occasionally bringing over pdf and jpg , sizing them to drop in!elements from other apps.

Cons: I am not sure that I like the layout sizing as compared with older versions. Maybe I am just not use comfortable with it and that will change as I go forward with projects.

Overall: I render right into the specification detail that I create and I find that to reflect realistic visuals for client evaluation.

Pros: Having a library of trees and other items to choose from. Also being able to create our own items to store in that library that are specific to our company.

Cons: When you insert too many items from the library, the speed gets very slow. We ended up modifying our own similar items so that it wouldn't bog down as much.

(I am famous for my colored plans)
2. Speed and easy to change your mine using "command z".
3. Graphic Design, and Architecture on the same format.
4. Communicating with other programs is possible.

Cons: 1. Since I started using it ( 35 years ago) its crashing. (6.2 when you try to duplicate)
2. Some CAD is not compatible. (the ones with 3D component )
3. You cant vectorize fonts.
4. You cant arch text.
5. You cant create shadows like in "ILLUSTRATOR"
6. Library should be bigger .
7. BIG PROBLEM WITH PRINTING.
I have to convert to jpg before printing -PAIN IN THE NECK!!

Overall: 1. I run my company on it ( dydesign.com)
2. My customers love my speed and presentation.

Pros: Basically, easy to use. Intuitive like most Mac software. Works well for my home projects but I'm not sure how useful for a business, unless basic remodeling. I like the software for my home projects.

Cons: I think there are more functions then are easily identified, or my expectations are too high. I do find myself a little frustrated in sizing objects. I used to be able to enter exact sizes, but can't to find that function.

Overall: For the cost, I can draw up my design ideas with relative ease and accuracy. I was able to get up and going really quickly without struggling to figure out how to use it.

Pros: Macdraft is so much easier to learn and use than AutoCad. In my work I do mostly wiring diagrams, but the occasional plan and elevation view drawings to scale. Macdraft is always my go-to tool!

Cons: The only thing I've had difficulty with is that unlike other CAD software such as AutoCad where you are drawing to full size in virtual space and the software is always scaling to fit the paper size you select, Macdraft requires you to make that choice when you start the drawing. This is really only an issue when I need to send my drawings back and forth with an architect that is using AutoCad. Also, depending on the scale you choose, then smallest unit of measurement selectable seems to change. In software that draws full size in virtual space, this does not happen.

Overall: Easy of use

Comments: I discovered macdraft pro in 2005 when looking for a mac based design program for my construction business. This was pre Sketchup. The software has come a long way since 2005 and continues to get better with every update. It's not as robust as Autocad, but it more then meets my needs. A lot of value for the money and a great alternative to Auto cad for mac users.

Pros: Ease of use, intuitive interface.

Cons: Feature limitations

Overall: I've been using MacDraft since the very first version which ran on a Mac 512 if I remember correctly. My how things have changed. I use this program almost daily in my business and it easily does 90% of what I need. It would be nice to have a couple of additional features like trim two curves, and trim a curve into a line, but all in all it is a very useful, simple to use tool that makes my life easier, without the huge learning curve of some of the other drafting programs. Having said that, it is not a replacement for those other programs, just another tool in the box.

Pros: It's the best Mac drafting solution we've found. We'd be lost without it.

Cons: It's not a 3D program, but that also means it's easier to use

Overall: We use MacDraft for mechanical and electrical drawings. It is very intuitive for both early users and old hands. DXF export is successful for transferring files to a shop that does laser-cut stainless panels, and to several others who do fabricated tanks for us. It works as expected.

Pros: program is easy to use, seems pretty intuitive for a non-CADD trained person. The online manual very helpful and detailed.

Cons: haven't found anything yet

Overall: I am not a CADD trained person or have much experience in using it. But I knew I needed to find a replacement for the Mac-based CADD program I was using. It was too unstable and difficult to use. I found MacDraft Pro and based on reviews I had read, downloaded the trial version. Right away, I was off to a great start. It is very easy to use, seems very stable so far and I am really enjoying using it. They also have a great online manual to help you through whatever it is you are trying to accomplish. Looking forward to more projects to try it on. The sales team was super supportive and helpful. They are even developing an engineering library more suited to our needs! So far, its been a super program for us.

Cons: I cannot modify on an Autocad document/file.

Overall: I am an Architect and Designer, I've been using this software for more than 10 years, and I can do from a Simple Drawing to a complete Architectural Drawings, easy to use and Autocad compatible.

Recommendations to other buyers: Can you add more restaurant equipments and ADA toilets, lavatories, grab bars to the library

Vendor Response

by Microspot on March 30, 2017

Thanks for the review Jacqueline! We would be more than happy to look into more library items such as those suggested (ADA toilets etc) what really helps us is having somebody in the industry that can help us create particular libraries so if you can drop us an email at support@microspot.co.uk with a longer list of what you would expect we would love to get started on this! As for editing AutoCAD files, MacDraft Professional can open and edit DWG files by going File > Open > Change MacDraft pop up to DWG. I hope this helps in future projects! Microspot Team

Comments: Need better input for object parameters- like exact location for center of a circle, rectangle, etc
Need to be able to center objects on an axis better not reference to a corner- please make entry for centerline data point
- (minus) for upwards direction is difficult to understand. Most use - for downward direction
Please make option for entering one object then back to pointer. Very annoying that it keeps making squares, dimensions etc after one has been entered. Double click doesn't always seem to work either
please make option that default fill is clear not white. Very annoying to keep having to change from white to clear for every object

Vendor Response

by Microspot on March 30, 2017

Thanks for the review Tim, let me address a few of your points to help you in the future. If you draw one object and no longer want to use the tool you can press esc or the V key to go back to the cursor. You can change what you want to appear as the default color, even make it clear by default by making sure nothing is selected and changing the color (fill) to clear, then go MacDraft > Preferences > Document Defaults > Save Fill Patterns & Colors. Select that and hit OK. Now any document you start will open with a clear fill by default. I hope this helps! Microspot Team

Pros: Already written...

Cons: Already written...

Overall: We use Macdraft Pro for many types of architectural drawings -concept and technical.
The software is very well laid out and a stable working platform.
The video tutorials are excellent as a starting point.
We particularly like the range of graphic capabilities and the supporting library for trees, people, entourage..... This makes it possible to give life to a drawing quickly.
The support via email from the Microspot team is excellent and they are very responsive.
Personally, my only real criticism is understanding the drawing size, scale relationship when setting up drawings. Perhaps this could be a little clearer.
We also use Autocad and Sketch Up. Macdraft proves us with a 2D drawing environment that is much better graphically than Autocad.
The overall price of the Pro package is very competitive.

Recommendations to other buyers: I am now getting into modular drawings so as to cut down on repetitive things. Also using the Slide Printing so as to have a Cover Layer attached to all the drawings. Makes it look more professional without the time consumption.

Pros: Ease of use and broad capabilities

Cons: Occasional crashes

Overall: I've been using MacDraft for more than 15 years. In that time it has matured and stabilized thru the many iterations of MacOS. It's broad capabilities help me in my work as a real estate developer and it is reasonably priced. A good value considering the cost of other full featured drafting programs. I tried AUTOCAD and found it overly complex and unintuitive. In contrast, MacDraft has remained easier to use with a very good Mac like experience, despite having added many capabilities through the years.

Recommendations to other buyers: Wait for a sale or bundle with the templates or symbol libraries. These are a must have.

Comments: I was in design school (NYSID) before CAD was an option--early to mid 80's.
I was shown this software by my Apple Tech consultant way back then. I fell in love with the ease of it, I can email the drawings to my blueprint company and have full size drawings ready in no time! Conversely, I leave many of them on my iPad or laptop to show clients who don't require a paper print to understand what's going on with their project.
I will admit that I don't use all of the amazing tools offered--after all of this time, 30+ years, I'm still not well versed enough to use all of the CAD based options, but that's just a matter of using their tutorials, user guide and learning! I can't imagine using any other drafting/design software.

However, that has not yet occurred, so 6.2 is still sitting in the applications folder awaiting an operating system on which it can function. Comments: I have been using this program for about 8(?) years. I originally took to it for it's reasonable price and familiar tool layout as I had been using Adobe Illustrator for doing cabinetry shop drawings and the tool set is quite similar. Not really knowing the scope of various programs that are available, I felt that MacDraft was a safe bet, which turned out to be true. It is a very user friendly and intuitive program that I was able to seamlessly pick up. I really didn't want to
-and didn't feel I could afford to- spend a month learning a new program. I have a custom cabinet shop in Brooklyn NY and do all of the drawings for what we build. My only complaints are some very minor issues I have had with measurement readouts once in a while. Otherwise would be 5 stars across the board.

Pros: Great tools!

Cons: Maybe I haven't looked at the manual properly, but I'd like to snap to objects in other layers.

Overall: I've been a devoted MacDraft user for many years and am delighted, not only with the ease of use and functionality, but also the great support from Microspot.

Recommendations to other buyers: It's just great!

Comments: I just upgraded to 6.2, easier to use than any previous version, although to be honest I've always found McDraft to be the easiest Cad drawing program to learn and use. Even if I'm the one making up the fixtures and furniture, it only take a 1/2 minute to do.
Highly recommend this software for anyone looking for Cad software for drafting simple to highly detailed complete plan sets, as I have done.

Pros: Ease of use combined with power.

Cons: I can't find any way to set up various preset groups (e.g., line weight x, line color y, line style z), so I have to select each one individually

Overall: I've been using MacDraft for years, in its various iterations, primarily to produce blocking diagrams for theatrical performances. The latest version is even more powerful than the earlier ones. Sure, there's a bit of a learning curve, and I know I'm not using even half the power of the app, but it's versatility has won me over. There are plenty of other drawing applications available, but for the combination of features I want, plus a relatively low price, MacDraft takes the cake!

Pros: Price point, Easy to get started. Easy to use. Drawing line weights always look professional.

Cons: I miss some of the features that are on AutoCad. Dimensioning things can sometimes be a real task. Lining things up, copying small images...I do lots of tile design for bathrooms and kitchens, and getting real detailed and lining things up and be a challenge with this program. I've also found that if I've worked on a document over and over again, which some of my projects take months to create, the document seems to have weird layout issues. Shapes refuse to line up and when I copy and paste, things are completely out of whack. I've learned many things by trial and error on how to manipulate the program, but after all this time using this product, still catch myself trying to do auto cad shortcuts.

Overall: Love this product...have been using for about 10 years. Run it on my iMac and MacBook Air. Current 6.2 version is the best to date. I was trained on AutoCad back in school and before opening my own business, used AutoCad at the various firms I worked for. When I started my own business I needed a drawing program, but one that could easily work with an iMac. I was happy to find MacDraft. The transition between AutoCad and MacDraft was pretty seamless, there are differences between the two programs, but if you understand the basics of cad drawing, there should be no issues. I use MacDraft for everything design related...furniture plans, cabinetry elevations in bathrooms and kitchens, designing custom furniture, tile detail. Highly recommend this program. And customer service is great...always able to connect with someone who wants to help.

Recommendations to other buyers: Be patient with the learning curve. I would love to take a MacDraft class...any chance MacDraft might come to San Francisco for a tutorial? Or, better yet, offer online training? I would pay a class fee if I could have an instructor get on to my computer and walk me through my questions. I've tried the "help" menu many times, but my questions don't always appear. Anyway...overall, I'm very happy with product. :)

Thanks for the review Ron! We wanted to make sure you were aware that MacDraft Pro 6.2 can read .mdd files which is MacDrafts old file format, it can also read DWG files which are AutoCad's native format. Simply go File > Open and change the pop up to 'DWG' and you can now open AutoCad files. I hope this helps you in the future! Microspot Team

Pros: It offers everything I need from CAD. But I don't use too many complicated features

Cons: It will sometimes corrupt a file and I can no longer open or use the file.

Overall: I have been using MacDraft for the past 5 years or so and it offers everything I need from a CAD program. The only criticism I have is that sometimes the files will crash and corrupt themselves. So if you didn't save it or don't have a backup, you are SOL. This has happened a handful of times to me and is excruciatingly frustrating when it does.

Recommendations to other buyers: Have auto backups so when files corrupt themselves, I don't have to start from scratch.

Pros: Very fast and easy to use.

Cons: Crashes often.

Overall: Because I have used MacDraft for many years and have extensive renderings in MacDraft, it is the "go to" first program for my conceptual design work. However, MacDraft crashes way too often and requires constant saves to protect your work. Crashes often occur when trying to save work, which is very disturbing and usually corrupts the file making it un-openable. On the plus side, it is the fastest 2D drafting program I have encountered so I put up with the crashes.

Recommendations to other buyers: Be sure to save your work often, though sometimes it will crash when trying to save your work and can corrupt your file so that it cannot be opened ever again.

Comments: I purchased MacDraft when it first came out and have upgraded ever since. I have created dozens of drawings and continue to use it regularly. Most recent was a kitchen layout and sidewalk heating system. It may not be as robust as AutoCad, but it is easy to use and much less expensive. When I haven't opened it for a few months it is easy to recall the program's functions. If you want an intuitive drawing program that costs relatively little I can heartily recommend MacDraft Professional. I use the program on a MBP with a 50 inch monitor and with that, I can easily work with detail on a large area.

In 2000, I did all the drawings for an office warehouse we purchased. I was told I would need a $25,000 architect to provide suitable plans for the county permitting process. I did all the plumbing, electric, lighting...every drawing the county needed in MacDraft and saved myself the cost of an architect.

If you're working in an environment where you have to deal with AutoCad people, this may not work for you, but it's worth taking a look at if you're needing drawings and layouts on your own.

Thanks for the glowing review William, your comment regarding AutoCad people made us wonder if you were aware of MacDraft Pro's DWG functionality? In case you aren't, MacDraft Pro can open and save files as DWG meaning it can work directly with AutoCad, hopefully that will help you in future projects :) Microspot Team

Pros: ease of use

Cons: PDF quallity

Overall: I have used Macdraft for quite some years now and have found it easy to use at a base level if you are just starting and as a perfect tool to show in detail all your projects as you get more confident. I use it for architectural work and have chatted to the company about software and my ideas and they have always been able to help. I doubt if I will change now. As it is a review you will note that it is lacking five stars in the features and functionality bit. That is because when you save under a PDF as many of us have to in order to communicate some of our drawings that way. The renditions as it is made compatable are sometimes not as good as they could be. But it is a small thing but it would make a big improvement.

Recommendations to other buyers: keep going in the direction your taking. I like all you do

Pros: Read Review

Overall: I've been using MacDraft forever - and use it exclusively for programming, planning, and early conceptual design. I don't use any other drawing or drafting software - which isn't necessary for my position as a principal and owner of my firm. There's no better software for creating effective "bubble diagrams", and easily evolving those diagrams into initial plans. It's terrific to use in real time with clients to manipulate the plan. I then use MacDraft to work with staff created CAD drawings to develop the projects. I really need no other "CAD" software for the work I do.

Overall: I have been using MacDraft Pro for many years at this point, since v5.x to be exact.
I have used it successfully for many very large commercial projects, as well some smaller residential projects.
It's easy to use and is very efficient from a time standpoint. It works extremely well on my Mac. The fact that it writes and reads to .dwg format is also very helpful when sharing files with users of other platforms.
Updates from my original version are always progressive and very economical.
The few times I have required customer support were enjoyable, with a quick and definitive response in all cases. I would highly recommend this product.

Cons: still some bugs. The app crashes regularly. I have made my own macro which auto saves my files every 5 minutes because the app crashes so often. There are bugs in text handling. Pros: Easy Drawing
Easy and practicals Tools

Cons: May be more easier compatibilidad with :
Transforming MD files in Autocad in DWG.
Transforming MD files in JPEG images like is doing in PDF

Overall: Great functionality and support.
Thanks to the support staff.
IAs Interior Designer I use to insert a lot of photos from Photoshop into my MD drawings because as you khow Photoshop doesn't work at scale. I wish MD will able to open very heavy files like more than 1 G.
The 6.2 version is great.
And the zoom it's not sticky anymore !
Very important :
The Special line tool perpendicular is perfect but the one starting at the center of an existing line or objet is not. The center line cannot be perpendicular even with the alt button. So after drawind the center line, one should go to check the angle with resize window. The center line must be automatily perpendicular like the othet one.
Nothing more.
The remaining tools are perfects.

Recommendations to other buyers: I am using it alternativly on a 27" iMac and my PowerBook. IPhone and IPad no way ! I have to convert my MD file in PDF in order to see them in those devices. Wish I could see those file in JPEG less heavy.

Pros: Ease of use and powerful capabilities

Cons: Occasional bugs that need to be addressed. (Not as if I've ever seen any software to be bug-free.)

Overall: I've been using MacDraft since v. 1 in 1985. Back then it was as easy to use as Apple's MacDraw but could accurately maintain scaling when moving an image from one drawing to another with each drawing in a different scale. Now, with many more features and capabilities, Mac Draft 6.2 is still extremely easy to use.

This new 6.2 release has a variety of GREAT new features but without a doubt, my favorite is the "page centering" feature. In the past when you opened a drawing and dragged out the size of the window you were using, it was almost always a two-step process: you placed the size of the window you wanted on your screen and then you'd move the image where you wanted it in that window which invariably was in the middle of the window. Now, from the first placement of the window to subsequent adjustments, your image is always in the center of the window regardless of whether you are resizing from the right or left side.

This centering of your document also provides an extra benefit: the Dead Zone. Not as macabre as it sounds, the Dead Zone is simply a place off to the side of your document where you can place objects that you do not need in your image at the moment but do not wish to delete. So, whether it be furniture, straight lines, or sizing rectangles, simply move them off the document you are working on onto the gray "dead zone," and they will simply just "sit there" waiting to be used or not. And anything off the document will not print. So, such objects are "off" but not forgotten--just there when you need them.

Other great new features are custom guides (dragged from the ruler) as well as Smart Snapping of objects where the top, center, and bottom of an object can snap to another object at the same points.

The Welcome screen provides a variety of help features but if that's not enough, there is also a new Helper Palette that will provide basic instruction on any of the tools. Besides the Help provided in the Welcome window, there is also a "New" tab with both blank documents and many templates to help you get started in a variety of directions. And yes, there are all of your recent documents for you to continue to work with.

Despite all of the many new features (I've only pointed out a few). The overall MacDraft application is still the same MacDraft that longtime users have enjoyed for years. Easy to use with powerful performance.

Recommendations to other buyers: I've been using this software for over 25 years and it's constantly helped me do my job.
