Comments: This overall is a great program.

Pros: This is a pediatric software. The designers have built-in designs that are tailored to meet the demands of many pediatric offices. As times and requirements from multiple agencies change, the designers are quick to meet these new challenges. It is easy to use. We have trained new doctors, nurses, front office with no problems. It also has ways to keep confidentiality matters under control. We are able to do everything that we need to do on the software. The designers are prompt to handle problems and prompt to respond to new requirements including requirements, it seems, from the state level for each of the states. We also use the program for billing purposes, and have had no problems with the billing end of things. You can have your own design features added easily and make your own templates for almost everything. Plus, making templates is very user-friendly

Cons: Some of the things we need to do on the software comes at an additional price. For example, if you want to be storing on the cloud or you want the software to send emails of upcoming appointments to patients. Sometimes there are a lot of clicks that seem could be decreased. Extra clicks is time consuming. There are other things that could improve workflow as well which would also improve time consumption.

Comments: I have been using OP for about 20 years now and have watched it grow and change like any child from infancy to adulthood, and this program has matured to an invaluable tool for pediatric practices across the country.

Pros: This is one of the easiest programs I have ever used. The point and click on most screens has made a computer dummy like me a genius when it comes to doing my job, or even helping out in areas of the program that are not in my every day job description. Entering payment, doing diagnostic testing in house or sent out to the lab, exam notes and prescriptions have become easier and quicker plus more legible. The program helps track tasks which need to be done when children come in for visits so nothing can be forgotten, vaccines history is available so appointments can be made within the correct time frame to the child to receive them so visits are not lost on early scheduling. This program, if used to it's fullest potential can be a doctors' dream come true.

Cons: There are very few cons to this program, but with all computer generated software, there is the occasional update that doesn't go well. When that happens, support at OP is usually on top of it and a fix is done asap, after all computers are only as good as the programmer and we are all human.

Pros: I do like the fact that you can drag and drop an appointment on the scheduling screen. That is really about it.

Cons: I HATE the call center for your issues. They LITERALLY never know how to fix a thing. They will close a case without an actual answer. You will get a link to a description of what the report is. Not how to fix an issue. The amount of clicks it takes to get anything printed is absurd. The rx writing is absurd. Your nursing staff should be able to send a refill on a chronic med without an issue but this system makes it impossible. They have LOTS of glitches that they NEVER know how it happened or how to fix it. They will say " well we need to see your work flow to recreate the problem". Its a glitch you can't recreate it. The owner is extremely rude and hard to deal with. We have had this system for 6 months and are still not seeing a good number of patients. The billing portion of this system is a complete nightmare. They have sooooo many places to look for charges and so many reports that are all completely different with completely different information on them that should overlap. I can't warn you enough to STAY AWAY!

Overall: None. I really like VERY VERY little about this software.

Comments: The pre training was great!

Pros: IT is extremely pediatric friendly, There is a lot of good support. There is a support staff that you can reach through telephone, email or chat along with a list serve with a lo of other offices to so how every one does things or is there is an easier way then what you are doing. The software is very user friendly and the report modules are great. We have not even used all that is available such as the MU product and the Portal which I have heard are good too. Yesaly conferences are a great way to meet others on the program and have great classes to pick up new ideas and learn of changes.

Cons: Billing reports were a little harder to get used to. Our billing person has no problem but did take a little training.

Pros: It's pediatric-specific. I love the charge entry and the scrubbing part of it for billing. Messaging is great. It's a robust system.

Cons: It will definitely take your physicians much longer to do their job. Electronic is not quicker. Don't shortchange yourself with training and e-learning time in advance. Scanning paper, having consults, and creating legacies are tedious and a lot of work. We're still trying to work on this process. With paper, the providers could glance at it quickly and sign off on it. Now, you have to scroll down through everything, and it's a much longer process. Physicians are still spending additional time (hours) in the evenings doing messages and reviewing their scans. Billing statements are not user-friendly. They are hard to understand and explain to a patient. There's too much detail on them. There's no training on the upgrades. You have to figure them out yourself.

Recommendations to other buyers: Do as much prep work as possible, and get as much scanned into the system prior to going live. My providers started four months in advance, and that still wasn't enough time. Get your templates done in advance. Implement in steps. We implemented the billing and scheduling December 1st, vaccines and eRX in January, and the EMR portion in mid-March. During that time, it gave the providers and nursing staff time to get familiar with the system. This really worked well. I think we were the first group to implement a setup like this with OP. I think they will agree it worked well. Get training in billing prior to going live. The superuser training was not helpful for billing purposes. Our salary cost increased considerably because we had to hire scanners and pay overtime for permanent staff. Physicians had to start early and stay late to accommodate the patients needing to be seen. They've pretty much lost their lunch time to do messages and review scanned paperwork. Just be prepared!

Excellent...

Pros: OP has been the best product for pediatrics. It really helps to have someone in the field such as Dr. Kressley, that understands how and what is needed from the provider level to the scanner level. Our documentation has improved as well as our vaccine counts. OP is always upgrading to get the most usage out of OP. The PM side has improved over the last 2 years. They bring us to their conference, teach us new and exciting things and not to mention they feed us well.

Cons: Slowness. This is a big issue for our office on Monday's when we are trying to schedule 6 providers. It's a known glitch with 14 but I'm sure this will be resolved as well.

Recommendations to other buyers: Go to other offices that use OP. See how it works. We recommend in house server. Vaccine scanner for your vaccines. Do your homework. Figure out if you like templates and who in your office is going to set them up. Give your Providers and staff enough time to train. We went live on the PM side first and in the meantime was working on training and setting up templates for the EMR side.

Comments: We have been using OP for almost 4 years and we are very happy with it. We did a lot of research before we chose OP and we are glad we chose this product. OP is very "user" friendly for pediatricians; whereas, the other products out there were not. This made the transition for paper charts to EMR a much smoother process than we anticipated. No regrets!!!

Pros: Ease of use. Support at OP is fabulous...very quick to respond and solve issues.

Cons: Not happy with the speed of retrieving messages. wish it were quicker. Not sure if this is just our system or a glitch with OP. OP is looking into it.

Pros: 1) OP is designed specifically for outpatient pediatrics and thus is the best pediatric EMR on the market. 2) Best Immunization algorithm and always quickly updated to reflect ACIP recommendations. 3) Have found support very responsive and continued improvements on support response as OP has grown

Cons: Challenges with integration to hospital based systems / clinically integrated networks, but I don't think this is unique to OP and is something that OP is working on.

Pros: pediatric specific templates and vaccine inventory.

Cons: The fact that OP is uni-directional with Florida shots vaccine registry dis-allowing exporting vaccines from florida shots . The general layout of the system has a very small font size making it hard to read, get your self a pair of glasses if you are planning to use OP . The system keeps freezing when I am using it from home and I was told its due to the speed of my wireless internet which means additional cost to upgrade both home and business internet. The schedule for implementation is based upon the availability and the convenience of the trainers, it took me more than 5 months to go live with them and its not because of the intensity of the training its just because they don't have enough trainers. The customer service is of limited help and is mainly for technical support, if you have an EHR question then you have to get in touch with the trainer.

Recommendations to other buyers: The system is complicated and not user friendly with continuous of clicks and exiting multiple screens to get to the old one..The system needs a lot of upgrades to be up to date with the current technology. The system is not truly paperless since they dedicate a scanner just for OP which means endless scanning affecting the front desk jobs and the work flow. The system doesn't have the capability of faxing referrals to specialists which means using a manual fax at the office which is again consuming more front desk time. Just be careful before you sign with them, look at other EMR's and most importantly look at the system live and have a long list of questions about every single feature otherwise you may end up losing money, time and effort.

Pros: The fact it is pediatrics specific! Most EHR's don't specialize in just one specialty and when changes are needed that becomes a bit difficult. That is not the case with OP. If a new vaccine comes out OP is on it and there is no leeway time for them to get the new information uploaded into the system. Their entire focus is making the best PEDIATRIC EHR system.

Cons: It would be nice if it was written in the initial contract & price to have a trainer come onsite after years 1, 2, 5 & 10 (of implementation) to do an analysis on how the software is being utilized and ways to become more efficient.

Recommendations to other buyers: Choose a software company who's only focus is the specialty in which you work. Have worked with both I can state from experience requests, problems, issues, wants, etc. are attended to much quicker when everyone within the company is after the same goal.

Pros: The product itself is incredible. I have been using it for over 11 years and am still thrilled with it! The updates are quick and the support is extremely helpful. As it is a Pediatric specific EHR, it is ALWAYS up to date with all the latest recommendations. I absolutely LOVE it!

Cons: Not really a criticism of Connexin software specifically, but I was used to the way things were when I first purchased it, You pay for the software, and get everything. Not a huge fan of now having to pay extra for all the additional "modules" but this is the way ALL software companies seem to be now.

Recommendations to other buyers: No other software is consistently rated high in pediatrics as this one. One might be rated higher in a particular year because they just overhauled their pediatric features, but will then ignore it again for five years. OP is consistently tops.

Comments: The portal is a great way to communicate with parents, save A LOT of paper and allow parents/patients to access their own medical records. It has saved us man-power hours and a ton of hassle. A great feature!

Pros: To have an EMR that specifically is tailored to pediatrics is key. The responsiveness of the OP staff, all the way up to the CEO, to their clients is unprecedented and so appreciated. We don't even use some of the features (yet) and we are so happy. It has made billing more efficient, chart documentation more complete and appropriate and has helped our practice immensely. We would highly recommend it for any peds practice!

Cons: The scan review feature needs tweaking - it takes a few clicks to go through scans. But even that is better than the paper system that we used prior.

Overall: This software looks nice but it difficult to use. Lots of set up, constantly changing and no customer support. Reports are difficult to read and don't drill down deep enough to really see what a practice is doing. Not good for practices with multiple locations.

Pros: I like that it is user friendly and it is specifically pediatric based. The support has been good however busy at times. I love the great tips and helpfulness from our rep, from the physician listserv and the conference. I feel like the software makes it easy to keep track of what you have outstanding and to follow up on messages, labs, superbills, etc.

Cons: I do think it is hard sometimes to get the support on more involved issues. When I call for something simple (to IT but not to me) the are quick to get it fixed but when I have a long standing issue I feel like I don't hear back for awhile. That being said I can usually get help when needed.

Pros: Simply the best and most comprehensive features available anywhere, OP  comes loaded with over 200 pediatric-specific "sick visit' templates, immunization forecasting, electronic school and camp forms along with pediatric developmental assessments, surveys and disease-specific action plans.

I've used OP for 16 years, and can say with confidence that  it is designed specifically for pediatrics , with tools pediatricians need to both keep kids healthy and improve quality of care."

Cons: Hands down the best of the best for pediatric offices. OP is so user friendly and works around your practice.

Pros: Office Practicum thinks like a pediatrician. They understand that taking care of children is inherently different than taking care of adult patients and they focus on things like vaccines, growth charts, adolescent confidentiality, well visits - things that are at the core of what pediatricians do every day. In addition, the vendor has created a virtual community of pediatricians who use the product and collaborate with each other to make use of the software even more valuable.

Cons: It's not really the vendor's fault, but so many outside regulatory changes including Meaningful Use and ICD-10 have no real value to practicing pediatricians, especially since at least 50% of us don't qualify for any MU funding. Sometimes the need to keep up with external regulations has necessitated slower incorporation of functionality that pediatric users want included to push the envelope.

Recommendations to other buyers: The most important thing is to take a hard look at what you do every day and your workflow. It's easy to get overwhelmed, and or to be fooled into thinking that every EHR vendor has things like vaccine forecasting and well visit templates down. It just isn't true. Choosing a vendor that makes your specialty their priority is key to a successful relationship.

Pros: Our office has previously used 2 other EMR's and I have used 2 other and by far this is the most intuitve and easy to use EMR on the market. Easy to use and allows for work flow to be easy. Thinks the way pediatricains think. Can see where patient is in system from check in to check out Financial reports easy to use and find out what you need Easy to enter and keep inventory of vaccines

Cons: When you want to fine tune forms the process is very labor intensive. However this system allows you to fine tune any report you want once you learn the system.

Recommendations to other buyers: Can multitask on multiple charts and has security and can only have one person in a chart at a time and easily flows for a pediatric office.

Pros: I am very happy with the way questions are responded to. The politeness and help from the employees for hardware and software. Once you get into the swing of OP it does a lot of streamlining your work.

Cons: I would like the rejections on bills to be more clearly telling a story about what happened. Each rejection should be clearly stated in each claim. I would like to add on procedures to an existing bill when necessary. I would like to not have a hard time tracing back credits and applying credits to accounts

Recommendations to other buyers: It is a very well run company. Make sure you push to learn everything you can during your training. As with everything some people go the extra mile and some assume you should know.

Pros: Our 12-provider pediatric practice likes the fact the EHR is for pediatrics only. We have been with OP for nine years. The ability to tailor your EHR to pediatrics and teens clinically is truly amazing. The OP culture is committed to best practices and incredibly open to feedback. They are always innovative and working to stay current with all the regulatory changes that impact pediatric practices: Meaningful Use, e-prescribing, HIEs, etc. I have never seen a company invite so much feedback in the spirit of change! Their medical director hands out her personal email on the blog all the time!

Cons: There have been so many changes for all EHRs in the last several years that OP can struggle, like the rest of us, to keep up and have products ready when they think they will come out. That said, I think they have become much wiser about how long it will take to be truly ready and more fully beta test before upgrades are released. The Practice Management side is not as strong as the clinical side, but new releases are addressing these issues.

Recommendations to other buyers: Talk to the OP pediatrician users. Get a trial of OP, and consider visiting an OP practice for a day.

Pros: Unlike most medical EHR and billing software programs, Office Practicum is pediatric specific. It was designed by a pediatrician, and is solely 100% for pediatrics. The result is superior (and always appropriate) templates, great, beautiful growth charting, bright futures handouts build-in and developmental recommendations for specific patient visits. These plus many other characteristics that are so much more robust and appropriate for pediatricians. From sports physicals to vaccines for children, this software has it all, and it is all for pediatrics. Their customer service is superb, and the software itself is user-friendly.

Cons: The cost, pure and simple. But you get what you pay for, and this product is worth it!

Recommendations to other buyers: This is our third EHR program. It is also our last! We finally learned that if a company says something is coming or is expected to be upgraded with the next update, you cannot trust that. Also, be aware that if your specialty is only one of several that the software is designed for, you may not get all the bells and whistles you want. Finally, think about your companion billing/scheduling software. With Office Practicum it is an all in one program, so it is seamless!

Pros: This EMR was designed by a pediatrician, and works beautifully for the way pediatricians practice. The company is very responsive to users, and is constantly trying to improve. Highly recommend.

Pros: The vendor is very helpful and quick to respond with solutions to most issues our office has. The product itself is easy to use and has so many useful tools (like PCMH reports).

Cons: The thing I like the least is the updates. Usually there are great new features, but there is also the occasional glitch that disrupt the workflow until it is resolved.

Recommendations to other buyers: This software is definitely one to consider because its focus is solely on pediatrics. You won't be able to find another software that will be as in line with what the needs of your practice are.

Pros: I use OP for one of my clinics. It's somewhat dated and not the easiest to use, but it's more tolerable than some of the older software. The patient chart is organized into logical categories, just like Epic - Medications section where you fill out prescriptions, Allergies, etc. Billing is a breeze.

Cons: I would personally have combined the Allergies, PMH, and Problems section together so there's less clicks. Like all EMRs, there's a lot of unnecessary clicking involved, but it's not too bad.

Overall: Overall, my second favorite EMR system in all of my clinics. It's a little dated, but still easy to use.

Pros: As a seasoned pediatrician with very little tech savvy, it was important to get an EHR with the most support for pediatric primary care.

Cons: Unfortunately, even OP still requires the user to divide visit notes into each of the buckets of an encounter.....still takes longer than writing the note would take.

Recommendations to other buyers: Be sure that the software helps implement care coordination, Bright Futures, interfaces with the state immunization registry, and helps prepare practice metrics that are the most important in pediatrics.

Pros: I respect that OP recognizes that the product is not a done deal upon delivery! The fact that OP is still in the mode of changing is both wonderful and at times frustrating. The fact that OP changes really is far more to our advantage than it is a problem. Allowing for physician/office feedback about their product and working to make the product better while combining all of the changing landscape of medical care is one the greatest advantages! Being pediatric-based is also awesome.

Cons: I would say that a faster turnaround to updates would be nice. The beta testing is needed so that all providers aren't having the same issue, but once the product is ready to roll out, it would be nice if it could be done to everyone at once instead of needing to get on a list.

Recommendations to other buyers: Keep in mind that the product will grow with the changing landscape of healthcare! Instead of needing to look for new software, OP is committed to making their product new all of the time!

Pros: I like the ability to utilize patient information regardless of which office you're currently at, to communicate from a patient's chart with providers, and to send RXs from a patient's chart.

Cons: After the most recent update, there seems to be difficulty utilizing the RX tab. For example, when you go into medication from a message, you now have to hit the update tab and then edit to renew a script. Extra steps are needed now. Also, you are unable to delete a medication when inside a message. You have to get out of the message, go to the chart, delete the medication, and then go back into message. Also, we have recently had a lot of problems with the program kicking us out every few minutes.

Recommendations to other buyers: It's hard to say because everything we practiced prior to going live was changed once our management customized the program for our practice. I think holding meetings for each department would be helpful. Nursing staff should be sat down in training to go over messages, RX usage, and vaccine input.

Pros: Peds specific. Ease of use in schedule. Extra tools (MU, PCMH), editable reports.

Cons: very little, except sometimes we bring issues to support and they don't take care of it or get back to us with a resolution, or are unable to resolve.

Recommendations to other buyers: Review all preset templates to make sure they are what you want in a template. Make sure you have someone who is knowledgeable with computers and tech as there are some great features to OP, but you really need some tech background to truly utilize.

Pros: It is a sophisticated EMR that has quite an in-depth ability to customize and adapt the system to your personal needs. They also have excellent customer service and help lines for resolving issues, as well as an in-depth database for personal research.

Cons: Because the system is so sophisticated, it takes quite a while to learn and become fluent at using the system. Also, it seems they spent a lot of their budget creating cool unique tools and items that never really get used in a day-to-day process. Finally, it feels like a fairly new system that, while getting better and better every day, has had a lot of obvious issues that would had been fixed if the system was as experienced as the office was lead to believe.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure you call OP and research their website. It takes a bit of time and some calls into their customer service to really become capable at using the system, so make sure you're using all the tools OP has provided before making a judgment.

Pros: Pediatric specific with embedded Bright Futures features. The vendor is always moving forward with innovation. Seemless conversion to SNOMED> Hopefully, the same for ICD 10!

Cons: Delays, delays, and more delays. Please adjust your timeframes to a more realistic date. Ex: OP 14--many months after it was promised.

Recommendations to other buyers: Run a complex patient interaction through the system to see the complexity and how well it handles more than run of the mill problems.

Pros: It's pediatric-specific and able to be customized. It has a lot of ability if the practice is willing to devote the human time and money (not seeing patients) to build. I think all systems require building, but I expected that the templates in a pediatric-based system would have been more fully developed with editing capabilities.

Cons: Communication. I would have liked more specific instructions as we prepared to go live, such as dx list completed, how to view these templates, and developing a timeline. It would be scary, but they could have informed us that it would likely take x amount of time to review specific parts, such as templates. It felt like it was just go live, and then build. An alternative way is have a frame and then rearrange and get more.

Recommendations to other buyers: Have a specific diagnosis in mind and request them to do the visit from start to finish, including questionnaires, treatment plan, communication of tasks, and completion of them.

Pros: Very user-friendly set up. Customer service is extremely friendly and very helpful in resolving issues. They do a great job of offering ways to connect with other users to get helpful insights or tips on how to better utilize the EMR. The EMR really is developed for pediatric practices because pediatricians developed the software. They do a great job of staying on the leading edge of any government rules and regulations, and they build in easy ways to meet the requirements.

Cons: At times, the response on a case can take a little while depending on the level of complexity of the issue at hand. The reporting capabilities of the EMR are a little restrictive. They are focused more on user-friendliness for physicians and nurses.

Recommendations to other buyers: Be sure to take the time to do your research and choose the best EMR for your needs. If you are looking for a pediatric, user-friendly (clinical side) EMR, then OP is the way to go!

Comments: Being a small (solo) pediatric clinic and doing many months of looking for the 'perfect' EMR, we are so happy to have found Office Practicum. We had 7 demos of other products as well as being told we were 'too small' of a practice for some of the large EMR's to sell to, we are very thankful to have found OP. The training and implementation was wonderful! We have now been on the cloud based system for 6 months and our transition has been fantastic. Our decision to change EMR systems was based on that our previous EMR was not keeping up with the current technologies, MU and immunization reporting. OP has been great with all of these! We also use their RCM component which has been invaluable for our practice.

Pros: Ease of use. Training and implementation. Robust system. RCM

Pros: Pediatric focus. Has logic with how the pieces fit. Has a great deal of depth and ability. Many different ways to learn the new information. Must be willing to stretch one's abilities, think through where a path will take you, think in new ways.

Cons: The need to figure out how to make it work. It would be nice to have all the different trainers' tricks to make it better rather than just those of the person you were assigned.

Pros: The clinical side of OP is excellent and had improved our operational flow as well as documentation.

Cons: The billing side needs work. Reports are not always accurate, depending on where OP pulls the data from. Making insurance adjustments is not easy. Should not have to find another patient to make a credit from the insurance. It would make an audit unbearable.

Recommendations to other buyers: Do the demos. Be sure to have all departments test the product and have a representative from each department attend the conference. While our clinical side loves the product, our billing department feels like they have taken a step back from our previous software. Purchase the on site training. Training videos are not always up to date with latest version of the software.

Pros: Having had an opportunity prior to purchasing and using OP to evaluate and explore other non-pediatric-driven EHR products, I have been amazed at how attuned this program is to the needs of a practicing pediatrician and how it continues to evolve with cutting edge changes.

Cons: With all the changes occurring in medicine today, the demands on the programmers force some delays in implementing new interfaces with medical devices, especially in the cloud-based version, which would better serve my patients on a daily basis.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure that you communicate with other pediatric practitioners using competitive software. Compare their experiences in dealing with problems as they arise and in having the ongoing support necessary to deal with change and hiccups in the system. OP has been exceptional in making access to both IT and programmers a priority. Concern for their users has never been in question.

Pros: Office Practicum is dedicated to Pediatrics and is a usable product right out of the box. It ships with pediatric templates based on Bright Futures recommendations.

Cons: The company has been working hard to stay ahead of changes in the industry. Overall, it is a wonderful program, and it improves with every update. It is a truly integrated PM and EHR product, but I think the EHR part is a bit stronger than the PM portion. The company seems to realize this and is working hard to improve reporting and tracking to make it a better business management tool.

Recommendations to other buyers: If looking at other systems for pediatrics, make sure you really dig deep and see what it really has to offer for pediatrics. Open all of the templates and see if they really work for pediatrics. Other systems seem to relabel adult templates and claim they now work for pediatrics but don't really have useful pediatric templates. Be careful!

Pros: It's pediatric-specific, so it is built with the functionality that pediatricians need every day. The vaccine logic is terrific. It's so easy to make your own templates and write phrases that can be inserted into notes. The special growth charts (preemie, Down syndrome) are helpful to pediatricians. They actively seek out suggestions from users and use them for improvements. It communicates with our labs and state vaccine registries.

Cons: The PM side is weaker than the EMR side, but it has improved and continues to improve. I would like to incorporate color and underline in what prints out (it can already do bold).

Recommendations to other buyers: Go to an office using the product and see it in action. Think about how you work every day and what you do repeatedly every day. See if it can work with your current workflow. See a demo of how easy it is to make your own templates.

Comments: Be very clear of what you want and have it penciled into the contract. Would not use their RCM-they take percentage and your staff still has to do a lot of work. Prepare to pay, it's not cheap.

Pros: like the immunizations layout. General flow is nice while you have your templates prepared. Interfaces are nice when they work.

Cons: Tech support is a total disaster. Different people are responsible for different parts of the program and have no or minimal knowledge of all of it. You have to be very specific of what you want and have it put into the contract otherwise they will find a way around it.

Pros: It's a pediatric-oriented EHR that pretty much covers all aspects of pediatric documentation that I want. Immunization registry is pretty cool. We looked at multiple vendors for more than a year before we settled with OP. We are a big practice with 12 providers, and everybody is mostly happy!

Cons: Inserting images (e.g., for rashes) into the patient visit is not feasible now. The patient portal is on its way, so I can't comment on it. The integration with HealthBridge so that we can get labs directly into the chart is still a work in progress. It still crashes here and there in my Mac, but recovery is quick. E-prescribing can be a pain sometimes. Any new version has bugs to be ironed out.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you are a pediatrician, look no further than OP. This is as close you can get to the most perfect pediatric EHR.

Pros: It meets the needs of pediatric practices without major modifications. The software is user-friendly and kept up to date with good support staff. The templates are easy to edit and can be adjusted to fit a variety of workflows. There is good foresight in updates to meet changing regulations. Meaningful Use and PCMH are well-developed. The software is very flexible.

Cons: I wish there was a way to link the templates so that a standard workflow could be used. This would prevent missed elements in documentation.

Recommendations to other buyers: While OP has it limitations (as every product does), it is made by pediatricians for pediatric practices. Because the vendor is small, it has the ability to respond to requests from users quickly and efficiently. The OP support team is excellent, and that is where the value in a product is gained in the long run.

Pros: The best part about OP is probably their pediatric-specific EMR, especially the Vaccines Forecasting, and that's about it. Unfortunately, there are only two pediatric-specific EMRs in the current market. I would choose their rival for their outstanding customer support and PM software, but their EMR is still not quite there yet. I do like that there's an OP forum where you have direct contact with the Medical Director, who is also a practicing pediatrician using OP.

Cons: The programming is terrible. There are a lot of bugs. Billing makes no sense; financial reports are unreliable.

Recommendations to other buyers: Until there are other choices for pediatric-specific EMRs, you're limited to just OP. I would not choose their PM component unless you want unhappy/frustrated billers and accountants.

Pros: Great Pediatric-specific EMR. The doctor loves it. It has many pediatric-specific features that you can't find on other programs. The vendor is helpful and friendly.

Cons: The practice management system leaves a lot to be desired. It's overly complicated and lacks consistent reporting. It's also difficult to find and produce simple, common reports. OP has grown a lot in the last few years, and it appears they are having difficulty keeping up with PM updates. Also, new releases (for both EMR and PM) are full of bugs that should have been weeded out before release.

Recommendations to other buyers: Don't just look at the EMR when evaluating; check out all features of a program. We were just shown the EMR; it looked great, and it is. We saw very little of the billing and scheduling. We should have asked for more demos.

Pros: The product's main strength is in serving the pediatric niche, and the pediatric features, such as the VacLogic forecasting/immunization module, which are very strong.

Cons: The EPM side of the product is not as robust as the clinical side. Closing out a financial month is still a fairly manual process due to this.

Recommendations to other buyers: Always go to visit existing user(s) similar in size/operations to your practice and observe that practice using the product for a day. Have both your clinical and non-clinical managers do this. Pay close attention to anywhere the product seems at odds with your workflow, and determine if your office can change to be compatible with the constraints of the software. Pay attention to interoperability with other systems, such as reminder systems, HIEs, labs, etc. Know what you can live without versus what you absolutely must have in an EMR.

OP service has also been very responsive to our needs; they get back to us in a timely manner and are friendly and helpful.

Cons: The Help manual needs a lot of improvement. There needs to be a way to search for a solution to a problem, rather than just being referred back to the user manual. That doesn't address any particular problem; they are just overall instructions.

Recommendations to other buyers: Look at the features you need most for your practice; visit other offices that are using it. Evaluate the service reputation of the company.

Woefully under designed and full of quirks that are not documented. Very poor if you want to do Meaningful Use.

Pros: Simple Low cost fee for software and installation Adequate training materials Friendly staff Adequate support

Cons: Weak product with many glitches that surprise you at every turn. Lacks many features that most larger companies provide. The low cost of the software and install will be offset by large amounts of time to make it work. We had to add staff when transitioning off a state-of-the-art system Beware of internet glitches

Comments: Having used Office Practicum for 16 years, I can say with confidence that this is an outstanding software product developed and supported by an outstanding company. Designed specifically for pediatrics, it has tools pediatricians need to both keep kids healthy and improve quality of care.

Pros: Pediatric-specific, customizable, frequently updated and improved, data-driven, well-supported

Cons: Honestly, nothing. I've used it for years and still think it's the coolest thing ever.

Recommendations to other buyers: Just do it.

Pros: Being a pediatric-specific EMR system gives OP the advantage of being experts within our field. They stay up to date on any and all changes (e.g., new vaccines, immunization schedule changes, etc.), and they work diligently to get updates to customers prior to effective changes.

Cons: We often learn of upcoming big releases way ahead of time. I have found my enthusiasm and excitement regarding these new changes often moves to frustration due to the length of time it takes to get the new release.

Recommendations to other buyers: Choose a speciality-specific EMR system. It saves you from having to compete with other specialities in regards to resolving issues and/or making necessary software enhancements.

Pros: I like that this is a pediatric-based software and that the company is responsive to concerns.

Cons: This software requires a lot of building by the individual office. This requires a lot of time and need to figure out. I needed to figure out what I needed to know and then seek information how to do it from OP. The system works smoothly for our office most of the time. It would be helpful to be provided a list of what needs to be built or have the option to hire someone at OP to build for the office.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure to have someone motivated to build the system and to reinforce the education as you progress. This person will require time and resources to accomplish this.

Pros: I like the ability to run various reports and lists related to patient care and patient information. OP Support is almost always quick to respond and resolves issues courteously and promptly.

Cons: Only select menus and functions are customizable. The Connexin Software help website for Office Practicum doesn't always explain what certain functions are used for and when you would use them.

Recommendations to other buyers: Take advantage of the e-learning programs and tutorials. Also, sometimes just exploring the program by selecting different menus and tabs before you go live can help you better familiarize yourself with the program, and you may stumble on to something that may be beneficial to your office.

Pros: It's a Pediatric EMR produced and supported by practicing pediatricians and their IT spouses. You aren't trying to fit a pediatric square peg into an adult round hole. It's constantly being updated to meet changing requirements.

Cons: We've had some ongoing frustrations with elements of the EMR, in particular the patient message exchange. In 2014, there should be more reliability with an appointment confirmation system.

Recommendations to other buyers: Look at several systems before deciding (we still say that OP was the correct choice for us at the time we went live). Learn to use the features from the start rather than delaying their use and trying to incorporate them into your daily use later.

Pros: What I like best about this product and vendor is the amount of technical support we receive daily. Everyone is so willing to help when we put calls in for technical support. This product makes the office flow so much better.

Cons: What I like least about this product is the the amount of screens that we have to navigate in order to check patients in and out. Also, it would be easier for the DOB field to be typed in without the dashes for faster patient search.

Recommendations to other buyers: Find a system that allows you faster service for patients, easier scheduling, and easier co-payment collections. Also, make sure the payment tracking is very fast and accurate.

Pros: It's a pediatric-specific EMR that comes with easy-to-use pre-made pediatric templates. I especially like the immunization part. It keeps inventory, as well letting you know what immunization are appropriate

Cons: The Practice Management side is not as robust as I would like, and reports are often difficult to obtain. The vendor has been working on this, and there has been and will continue to be significant improvements.

Recommendations to other buyers: When we implemented the EMR into the office, we had a trainer come into our office to help. It was affordable and worth the expense. Our transition was relatively painless, and we went from paper to full EMR in 3 days.

Pros: It's a great program that is easy to use. We get a good response from the vendor. I felt like our training was great. They were helpful when we were going through training. We had a specific person to handle our needs and questions until we were established and got on the regular support, which has been good also. The vendor has yearly meetings that are interesting and very helpful.

Cons: Constant changes, however necessary, don't always go easily.

Recommendations to other buyers: This software is pediatric-specific, which makes it much easier than the others we looked at. I would say that is the best thing to think about when evaluating.

Pros: I like the pediatric-specific features, the built-in vaccine logic, the patient portal ability, and the generally timely support responses (with a few exceptions). PM and charting are integrated in the same system. ROS is easy to use, and the coding is helpful.

Cons: The billing software and the integration with merchant processors isn't always smooth or seamless, causing disruptions in patient statements/collections and also errors that can be embarrassing.

Recommendations to other buyers: Definitely test drive it for note writing, documentation, etc. And ask specific questions about billing and merchant processor integration.

Pros: I like the fact that it is designed only for Pediatrics, which is what we need for daily use and keeps us up to date. I love using e-prescribe and having some of our labs entered automatically. I love the Bright Futures surveys.

Cons: I'm not sure if this is OP-related only, but documentation does take much longer. I haven't got the handout feature to work.

Recommendations to other buyers: Compare features that you need every day (e.g., developmental surveys, school and sports forms). If not included, they can be added in OP. E-prescribing works great; a bridge to Quest for labs is also available and is a big time saver. See if other EMRs offer these as well.

Pros: I like that it's pediatric-specific. It has superb vaccine logic and growth curves. The online listserv moderated by the Chief Medical Officer often gives very fast answers to questions without going through the Support Lines. Improvement suggestions easily are passed up the line for the next version. It has support for MU and NCQA.

Cons: The formal support lines can be a little slow. Prescription writing can be slow, but this may be more related to Dr First than OP.

Recommendations to other buyers: Just go ahead and use it. The only other program that comes anywhere near this one for pediatric use is PCC.

Pros: It's a very smooth transition from paper for providers. Templates provide a great starting point for those with no prior EMR experience. They have good tutorials during training.

Cons: It's a more difficult transition for billing. It lacked a lot of the features of our previous billing system. The e-learning tutorials disappeared after six months. I wish they were still available for review and for training new staff members.

Recommendations to other buyers: I was worried that OP was too small since they're pediatric only. They've gotten bigger and more popular in past year. Customer support has been great.

Pros: Once you learn the full potential of the product, you can will drill down and get all the various information you are trying to retrieve.

Cons: The training was confusing. A written user manual would be recommended as a quick reference guide in addition to the F1 button. People work differently, and I would have preferred a paper quick reference guide.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure you use enough training hours for your billing department. We combined training for billing and front desk, and it wasn't enough time for billing to fully glean the information and training they truly needed.

Recommendations to other buyers: I recommend that others take the time to review all the features that are specific to pediatrics. Pros: It's pediatric-specific. We're sold on a system that is made by pediatricians for pediatricians. They understand us.

Cons: The PM module is weak and confusing. While family billing is a plus, the system of credits and debits without real-time reconciliation makes it difficult to know patient balances at the time of the visit when we are most likely to capture payment face to face.

Recommendations to other buyers: It's a great EMR. It makes giving pediatric care easy and intuitive. The vaccine forecast is extremely useful. Support is excellent so far. Training is very good.

Recommendations to other buyers: My recommendation is that if you are a pediatric practice, don't look any further. This is the EHR for you. Do not be put off by the smaller size of the company. Cons: I hate when I go to get my labs and they're not there. You have to make phone calls to see what the problem is. Someone should call when the importer is down.

Cons: In some cases, in the payment window, there are a few unnecessary steps. It didn't used to be that way years ago. It's just a few extra clicks. Today, there are many more people to talk to; I almost never get the same person twice. It's not as personal as in the old days.
