Pros: A better look and feel than blackboard, with more features available and customizable for unique courses

Cons: The in-browser modules were often clunky and had errors, and the training process was probably not rigorous enough to prevent user errors by both teachers and students

Pros: - Good range of customisable features.

Cons: - Lacks some useful features.
- Can take time to navigate due to the high number of internal pages.

Overall: Allowed easy sharing of resources and a range of upload methods.

Pros: I like the ability to link pages, and insert text/images/tables/links. I like how many pages you can have within one, and the ease of navigation.

Cons: I do not like how hard it is to go into the HTML editor when you have edited a page and it still has the square with the arrow, meaning it sends you to an outside link. A lot of times I delete the text of the link, but the icon still appears, so I still have to go into HTML and try to navigate the code.
I also don't like that the default is to open a link inside that tab, but I'd prefer that it opens in a new window/tab.

Pros: I like canvas because it is a centralized location that multiple people can access, from students, staff, to faculty.

Cons: I find that the tabs can be challenging to navigate because they have different options within each tab. That can get confusing

Overall: This software is great to keep our campus community connected. Groups can access information that is meant only for them, and can be shared with other users.

Pros: The software has many different features. There are a lot of different things available on both the user and administrator side

Cons: Due to the many features, the software can be hard to navigate. There is a lot of clicking around until you get the hang of it (which is usually by the end of the semester)

Pros: Since Canvas is a relative newcomer to the LMS world, it's built on recent technology. It uses HTML5 and Bootstrap is built right in, so if you have teachers who know a fair amount of HTML and CSS, they can customize the heck out of anything.

Canvas has a lovely clean theme out of the box which feels like a starter theme, begging for a web designer to customize the experience. It's very simple with lots of whitespace, so it works well across devices, and there's something to be said for a lighter weight interface from the start.

Cons: Unfortunately, Canvas's main strength - being very simple and infinitely customizeable - is also its weakness. There is no built-in intuitive structure. Rather, everything from lesson plans to grades to threaded discussions all have to be manually interlinked. At least in my opinion, the built-in navigation ought to be more robust in connecting the dots and taking students where they need to go. Having used Canvas as both an educator and a student, I'd say it's excellent for faculty because it's so customizeable but awful for students if the instructor doesn't take the time to really learn the ins and outs, and my experience has been that instructors don't. Perhaps they don't have the time or the resources to be able to devote that much time to learning an LMS when they're trying to teach something that should come through almost effortlessly.

I really enjoy Canvas. It has a lot of features and is much better than other learning software.

Pros: The ability to use add-ons is great (but still relatively limited). The ability to export classes between organizations is great. Integration of assignments, turn in, grading, quizzes is great.

Cons: Organization of classes can only be done by an administrator so that means that as a teacher I cannot use if for clubs/events/etc. Google classroom works comparably for free. Errors in connection to gradebook often.

Overall: As a teacher having technology like this to organize the entire class and all the resources is great both for the teacher and the students

Cons: Canvas is a big, steaming mess.
My institution adopted it. I have been forced to use it to design a course, and it's taken probably five times as long as it should.
It is nearly impossible to move files around, move questions around, and copy things.
Want to do something really crazy like copy a quiz from your Fall course to your new Spring course? Well-- lucky you--if you Google it, you'll find there's a workaround for that! Yes, a workaround. Not a simple copy function or drag-and-drop. No. It's complicated and every time I've done it I've had to copy dozens of additional files in addition to the one I wanted because it WILL NOT LET YOU SELECT A SINGLE QUIZ out of a group. No. You have to copy them ALL.

That is just one example of the madness.
I don't know who ever allowed this thing to come on the market. It's a disaster.

Overall:
I've used other platforms, and this is worse than nothing.
It would be easier to do it all by hand like we did in ancient times.

Hmm... well, the support reps are fairly quick to respond and seem sincere. Unfortunately, they cannot offer easy fixes to anything, because there aren't any.
I think they secretly know what a mess this thing is and feel guilty.

Pros: The user interface is generally very friendly. I found it super helpful to organize both online and on ground courses when I was teaching for a university. It's laid out and designed well, and it was generally easy for students to use. The grading functionalities an analytics were incredibly handy!

Cons: Some outside programs were difficult to integrate at times, and shifting the dates of the course anytime I was copying a course from an old section to a new section, the dates never shifted fully with 100% accuracy. I always had to double check and correct the date shifts, which was inconvenient for a feature/function that would have been incredibly handy if it had worked 100% of the time with total accuracy.

Pros: Discussions can e set up to have peer reviews and allows for liking. Links can be added to the home page for students that allows for direct entry into discussions, syllabus, contacting staff , etc.

Cons: Deleting users is a task, some students find the platform difficult to use. There are many steps required to add a class and to delete users, which should be streamlined better.

Pros: The best feature is the "speedgrader." Students submit their homework via Canvas. It is then quick and easy to move through each submission and assign points. Points are then automatically entered into the grade book. The feature eliminates paper submissions.

Cons: Certain features seem limited and not intuitive. For example, it takes an extra step to assign different due dates to different sections. In addition, as a user and not an administrator, it is not readily apparent to me how to remove students from Canvas if they drop the course.

Overall: Ways to share files and information with students outside of class.

Pros: I can go back into time and get class assignments from years back. Calendar makes it easy to keep track of assignments (When professors use it correctly)

Cons: Sometimes you get timed out in discussions, spending an hour writing in the discussion form and then attempting to submit the discussion then the page redirects you to sign in, so you sign in and your entire discussion is gone. This could be easily fixed with sticky forms... Also the performance in slow, there is a noticble delay everytime you navigate to a different page while on canvas.

Cons: It doesn't offer as many features as other Learning Management Systems on the market and there are times you will be limited on what you can do. While LTI integrations are possible there are times they still need a little work to become more ingrained in education.

Overall: I have used Moodle, Blackboard, BrainHoney, D2L and Canvas. Of all the LMSs on the market Canvas is probably the easiest and most intuitive software to use. It offers a robust set of tools and LTI options to further improve the quality and I would highly recommend using it for your educational needs.

Comments: The capabilities of this software are quite impressive but the tedious layout, limited choices, and incessant need to 'jump through hoops' to make it worthwhile far outweigh any value it might otherwise have. The designers of the software considered practically every aspect of what they were intending to do but completely ignored the target audience. We are having weekly training sessions and even after several months, most teachers are struggling with the interface. For example: to create an assignment for a class you must go through a plethora of steps to make the class, including a great deal of information that isn't truly necessary before you can get to the complex task of actually creating an assignment. In other words, EVERY task is simply too time-consuming to make this software of much use to the average teacher. It does interface with Powerschool which makes a great selling point to administrators and parents, but if your teachers are spending an extra hour to hour and half a day, just utilizing this program, what is gained? Frankly, I can do essentially everything needed to implement a classroom through Google Classroom and Google Apps and the time needed to do so is a fraction of what Canvas requires. Bottom line: if you don't mind putting your teachers through a horrendous learning curve and saddling them with tedious and extremely complex software, go with Canvas. If not, I suggest developing your LMS around something with a more simple interface, more forgiving functionality, and quicker to implement. I can say the LMS of Learnmate used in some technology classes isn't really a great deal better but again, why make simple tasks complicated when Google provides a much easier platform.

Pros: The functions available are quite impressive.

Cons: "User Hostile" interface that makes an incredible amount of demands to implement. A large number of items it requires should have and could have a default setting allowing for quicker use.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try it before you buy it and let your teachers see the complexity

Cons: Inability to customize menu items
Inability to copy items within a course (only can copy from one course to another)

Overall: After several years of using the Blackboard LMS the company, I work for switched to Canvas. I find it much easier to build courses and add content than other LMS's that I have used including blackboard. There is automation as well. For example when copying a previously used course Canvas allows you to automatically update the items that have due dates attached to the current calendar/semester you are in. Another semi-automated feature is the grading rubric. If you attach a rubric to an assignment you can assign points with a few clicks of the mouse. There are 2 cons - you can not customize course menu items. You can not create an item and use it as a template. You have to build each item from scratch - the only exception is copying from another course.

Comments: When I first went to undergrad, Facebook had just opened up to students beyond Harvard, and papers were still turned in by hand. Now that I'm returning to school to get my nursing degree, I'm loving the use of online hubs like Canvas! The ease of turning in papers, taking quizzes, checking due dates and receiving feedback online, instead of in hard copy, makes my school life so much easier.

Canvas is very easy to use, if your professor knows what they're doing, and sets their Canvas site up well. Unfortunately, many professors still have trouble developing their Canvas site, which can really decrease the usability of the software. I use both the Canvas app and website. I find the website to be very user-friendly, but the app is buggy and lags in its speed.

Overall, I enjoy using Canvas, but I hope they continue to improve their app to make it faster and more consistent.

Overall: First I studied on some LMS, then I have chosen the Canvas for building my own e-course on this platform. I like that it is adaptive for Russian language, for mobile devices, friendly and simple for students. I have noticed that the LMS is developing, and judging by previous reviews it becomes better and better. All the rest depend on instructor.

Recommendations to other buyers: The best web browser for this LMS is Google Chrome (from my experience). I would recommend to develop the scope of web browsers.

Pros: I like the idea of having an app and website as a backup.

Cons: The app would glitch and not provide information. I was forced to go to the website.

Pros: It's used by all my teachers and it makes it easy to turn in assignments

Cons: On the mobile app there are often bugs and I wish it could display high, low, and mean scores on the grades on the mobile app the way it does on the web app.

Overall: I use Canvas for almost all my classes and it is a great way for teachers to post assignments, announcements, quizzes, handouts, and grades. It's also easy for students to access files, check grades, and turn in assignments. The limiting factor on Canvas is usually how well a professor can use it- if they don't know how to change the way grades are weighted, for instance, then the total grade won't be accurate. But overall Canvas is easy to use and getting better. The mobile app needs a little bit of help- it's kind of buggy sometimes and doesn't have all the features that the web app does

Recommendations to other buyers: Focus on making the mobile app better

Pros: User friendly format, tutorials, ease of use

Cons: It can be overwhelming if not broken down into easier learning segments for a new user

Overall: Canvas can do so much! It definitely eliminates extra work for teachers and frees up time to focus on student's needs. I like the Video Guides which are a repository of videos with "how to" info. There are also Canvas Guides that incorporate screenshots with notions from various users (students. instructors, admin, etc). Canvas has been a great LMS for our organization.

Comments: I have used Canvas throughout my graduate program at the School of Visual Arts. I attend a low-residency program, meaning we spend fall and spring online and meet in NYC in the summer for an intensive semester. Canvas made the online semesters surprisingly enjoyable ¿ I felt connected to my classmates and teachers even though we were scattered around the country. It takes some getting used to, and I think there are a lot of improvements needed to the overall flow and interface, but I think it's a great system.

Pros: Accessible, versatile, customizable, constantly improving, the course evaluation process is streamlined and easy

Cons: Some work flows are not very intuitive, have to upload certain files to a folder within the Canvas system before attaching to posts rather than just attaching them directly from your hard drive (which can be frustrating), calendar/scheduler is a little confusing

Recommendations to other buyers: I like Canvas because I feel like they are creative and constantly working to improve their program. Overall, my experience with Canvas has been positive over the past two years.

Comments: I think that Canvas is really almost there as a leading LMS for the 21st century. I use this product as a student and hear a lot about it from my professors. My major complaints are that the mobile app is not functional, the discussion threads are painfully useless, and the product allows too much appropriation from the buying company. I wish that it was simpler, more consistent, and more in-line with software trends.

Pros: Clean, efficient, and organized. I am thrilled by the overall layout, having used a number of other LMSs at this point.

Cons: Still not there. They have a lot of changes to make to improve for a 21st century audience.

Pros: - Ease of use
- Simple to navigate
- Basic + predictable
- Great customer support

Cons: - Super basic, lack of customization ability
- Limited learning options

Overall: Canvas is the latest iteration of a classic lms. It is safe. It does exactly what people have been doing already, it does not push the envelope in any way in order to push online learning into new bounds.

If that is what you are looking for - an lms that you can use at your highly structured institution (have seen it used in both corporate and academic contexts) then this is the lms for you. It has the standard question types (MC, T/F, short-answer that you have to review) and the standard features (chat room, file repository, syllabus page, course announcements, modules with videos). It is a good iteration of this type of lms - the design is way better than Blackboard, more intuitive and appears more modern. But at the end of the day it's just 90's era e-learning.

If you are looking to try new things with online learning - if you can't rely on any in-person component to clarify issues - if you want to implement creative activities to reinforce learning -- then this is not the platform for you.

Pros: Canvas is always available. Teachers and students rarely suffer from any down time, if ever. Even with the regular updates of the platform (every 3 weeks), there is no significant downtime. The integration with our Student Information System is really good, but will soon be even better.

Cons: I wish Instructure would value the opinions of an institution's Canvas Admin over instructors. Instructors tend to not stay up to speed with an institution's policies, new government regulation, or plain common sense in some cases. There are a few specific tools that would make an admin's life much easier... like this feature idea: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/7301

Overall: As the Learning Management System Admin for Utah Valley University, managing the use of Canvas can be challenging, but in a really good way. Whenever I run into a problem, I can usually find the answer and deploy a solution very quickly. Instructure provides a dedicated Customer Success Manager who meets with us regularly, a robust case management system, and an extremely helpful community engagement platform. Canvas is updated regularly to stay fresh on new technologies, features, and bug fixes. It's really fun to manage this system and have so much buy-in from faculty. Canvas is also on the leading edge with 3rd party integrations, data analytics, and cross-platform compatibility.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you're a new Canvas Admin, understand everything you can about SIS Imports, .csv files, roles & permissions, sub-accounts, and your institution's policies. Then take a look at using APIs when you're comfortable.

It is by far the best learning platform I have used.

Pros: The intuitive interface and easy-to-use file management is best in Canvas. The SpeedGrader is a very convenient tool.

Cons: There is no tool schedule classes or take polls for extra hours on Canvas. That makes it a convoluted process to schedule time.

Comments: Canvas is one of the newest players in the LMS game. Learning Management Systems have evolved over the last 15 years into very useful tools in the business of education. I have used four different LMS's over the years. When I first heard about Canvas I thought "here we go again, another LMS that claims to be the best and easiest to use". They did claim that and I was pleasantly surprised that they were actually one of the best and easiest to learn and use. The ease of using a drag and drop function allows me to move course material around with ease. An instructor dashboard lets me see student progress quickly. A live tie in to our student information system allows students to be added and removed from the system almost instantaneously. It is by far one of the best LMS systems I have used.

Pros: Ease of use, tech support, drag and drop features, no down time for system upgrades, live tie in to student information systems.

Cons: Price - this system is one of the more expensive LMS systems on the market but sometimes you get what you pay for.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would definitely contact them for a product demo. It would be well work your time.

Pros: The collaboration abilities and how easy/fast it is to set up your class on the platform.

Pros: As a course delivery system, Canvas has been intuitive, organized, and accessible for me. I have used this LMS for one online course and found it very easy to check my grades, submit assignments, and dialog with other students. It was also easy to take quizzes and tests.

Cons: At first, Canvas can be a bit intimidating because it houses so much information. It takes some getting used to, and not every user will need to be familiar with all of the features and capabilities of the software. After some time, this gets better, and you will learn what features you rely on heavily.

Recommendations to other buyers: Keep in mind not just the software's capabilities (which is critical), but also its ease of use for a range of users. For a given user population, there is likely a set of features that will be employed regularly. Are those features easy to use and clearly marked? What additional features might improve the efficiency or ease of use for the user, given the specific features he or she uses most? These are good questions to consider.

Comments: This is the third LMS I've used as both a student and an instructor and it's hands down the best one. It's also the only one that hasn't caused faculty to universally cringe.

For me the best part of this product is the Speed Grader which comes as close to simulating the process of sitting down with a stack of assignments as I've seen any software do. The viewer is agnostic to whatever file type the student submits, which is really slick.

Most other features "just work" which is great. The fact that each course comes with a forum and a live chat room built in is really nice, and they're always just one click away. If I want to hold impromptu office hours in the chat room I can quickly send out a message to all the students. It's the first time I've seen students and instructors actually use the LMS to communicate with each other.

For that matter, its the first LMS that I've seen used as anything other than an overpriced grade book.

I direct academic programs in animation and film-making.

Pros: In general, the Canvas platform is easy to navigate and understand. There are few features that can't be learned within minutes.

Cons: As an instructor, the single largest suggestion I have is that one be able to create drafts in the e-mail feature. It is really frustrating to have to create a message in one fell swoop every single time; one has to have all the pieces in place when one starts, and that takes some work.

Recommendations to other buyers: I'm not sure that an online learning tool has to function like Facebook. I often get the sense that Canvas was designed to resemble Facebook and other social media products, and I don't think this necessarily adds value to the product.

Pros: Canvas is an excellent Learning Management System (LMS). It provides multiple avenues to organize and present learning content. The built in wiki-editor allows for html formatted pages. Most common document types can be imbedded and previewed. Assignments, quizzes, and discussion come with many customizing options for access restrictions, grading. Grading is straightforward and transparent.

Cons: There are some complexities and quirks that can trip people up--questions in quizzes can become unlinked from the version in the question banks resulting in multiple version of questions, and questions made in the quiz don't translate back to the original version of the question. Student's current score versus final score trips people up--missing assignments don't count against them in the current score which is what students see, but the final score is what is exported to student's permanent record. Publishing items versus publishing the course in it's entirety

Recommendations to other buyers: No Learning Management System is perfect, there are trade-offs. Different products make different trades. The instructor and developer interface remains relatively sleek, by streamlining the options available. An LMS that could be customized to do everything everyone wanted it to would have to sacrifice ease of use.

Pros: The product support from the vendor is one of the strongest features for Canvas. Not that there are many issues, but when they do arise, answers and solutions are provided immediately, thus increasing the value of this product when rolling it out to a community. Additionally, the ability to have everything needed for the successful launch of a class makes this a self contained, efficient system for all levels of users.

Cons: Some of the issues in the system are non-standard so they take a little time to diagnose and resolve.

Pros: Canvas is so much easier for our faculty and students to use. The vendor, Instructure, listens to customer input and usually finds ways to make things happen in Canvas with requested features. The community of users from all over actively participates in the forums if there are any problems and has all kinds of suggestions for improvements or new features. Canvas evolves and grows because of it's user base. It's constantly being updated and made better through customer suggestions. This is always a plus!

Cons: Sometimes there are releases that may not seem extreme to the Admins that support Canvas, but would be a steep learning curve for faculty that get used to using Canvas. These rollouts can happen pretty quickly also. Sometimes Canvas takes the customer Admins concerns and holds off or makes changes able to opt in or out initially, other times, no. They're usually improvements for the better, but more user input should be provided for making them occur.

Recommendations to other buyers: After having supported Blackboard before, I hands down can say I like Canvas much more than Blackboard.

Pros: Overall, Canvas is an excellent LMS. First, it is very user friendly and has been well received by both our faculty & students. Second, it allows for easy customization, including branding and adding third party integrations. Third, it is a cloud hosted product, with regular updates and feature enhancements, and an active community to share ideas and provide feedback.

Cons: The biggest downside to Canvas is the lack of quality analytics & reports. The stock analytics & reports give some basic info but not much. Instructure just released Canvas data, which gives us access to a large amount of raw data, but it is up to us to figure out how to use this data (which we are currently working on).

Recommendations to other buyers: If you have any questions, ask. At the time we made the decision to move to Canvas, they were by far the most transparent & helpful in evaluating their product. They gave us a few references, who gave honest opinions and the pros and cons, and this gave us a lot of information not just about the product, but about the organization & support during implementation.

Canvas is the LMS of the Future.

Pros: The Canvas product has worked great for our needs in developing and offering higher ed online courses. Canvas provides great analytics, and Instructure also provides a live API for quick access to additional data, and functionality.

Cons: The rubrics, quizzing feature and the gradebook all need to be improved. However, given all of the other functionality throughout the LMS, the inadequacies in those three areas are worth dealing with.

Recommendations to other buyers: I highly recommend looking at Utah State University's Design Tools (aka Kennethware) to supplement the editing and design functions in Canvas.

Pros: The best thing about Canvas is it's ease of use for both the user and the admin. The setup was easy and painless and training the users was not as difficult as it could have been with other LMS

Cons: What I didnt like about this software was the support team. At first they assigned you a support team member but now that has changed.

Recommendations to other buyers: Take a look at the install time compared to other Learning Management Systems as well as the ease of usability.

Pros: I recently was charged with being the Canvas admin for our school and was able to start using Canvas immediately. It's super intuitive and the Canvas guides have been a big help.

Cons: It would be nice if I wasn't automatically enrolled in a course I create as the instructor. Having to remove myself, add the course instructor, and having to get rid of the "You have been enrolled in a course!" email is a bit tedious.

Recommendations to other buyers: Having used other LMS software as a student, teacher, and administrator, Canvas is definitely the easiest one I've dealt with. The interface is pleasant, it's easy to navigate, and the Canvas Guides fill in the blanks when I have a question I can't immediately answer myself.

Pros: cloud-based and great customer service. They do take the opinions and ideas of users and make changes when possible.

Cons: From my perspective, it required too much knowledge of javascript and CSS code for needed branding. Vendor didn't seemed too eager to make such things more user-friendly.

Recommendations to other buyers: Consider the day-to-day issues. How you use the product. How you support the product to your users.

Pros: Canvas' design is very intuitive and user friendly. I believe canvas makes the whole experience of managing several courses over the span of a semester (or quarter) very painless. The app makes it feel more connected and it's many features definitely cover everything one might need in a course management software.

Cons: The software's many features can be a deterrent to the uninitiated.

Recommendations to other buyers: Use it for a period of a semester to be able to fully appreciate it's value.

Pros: The software is super easy and friendly for the end user plus the support from the vendor is excellent. There is a Canvas community that provides user feedback and assistance.

Cons: Nothing! It is easy to evaluate and format to meet the needs of many different educational formats.

Recommendations to other buyers: Be open minded as this product does not behave like a traditional LMS - it is so easy for the administrator and user to keep it "fresh" and engaging for students.

Comments: The Canvas lingo is awkward and is like learning a new language. Why reinvent new terminology for things like email, when we already have vocabulary for things like "sent mail" or "lesson units". Why "conversations" and "modules"? My experience with customer service has been three different phone calls for three different issues, here are the responses: 1. No, you can't duplicate assessments, you have to make a new one each time even if you want to use the same survey form over and over, and we have no intention of making duplicating assessment quizzes or surveys possible. 2. I don't understand your issue or problem at all, and I am not even going to pretend like I care 3. I don't believe that 1/3 of your students are having a problem, because even though you are sending me a screen shot of what they see on Canvas which is clearly wrong, when I log in as them its looks ok, so you aren't having a problem after all.
None of the default settings on anything make any sense, so consequently I am constantly having to go back into things and edit them to make changes, and I am constantly having to put up with emails from co-workers and my own child's teachers who don't understand how to limit the audience on their emails.

Pros: Canvas' easy to use format makes it easy to add a variety of content to my online class sessions. I am continually finding new ways to use Canvas. Students like being able to see their grade book in real time. I like how the appearance is uncluttered and easy to navigate. The help desk is always quick to respond to my questions and concerns.

Cons: Still learning how to move course content from one semester to the next with ease. I can find all the files, but I always have to re-set up the course.

Recommendations to other buyers: Being able to access the help desk easily and their response time is very important. The FAQ section is also helpful.

Pros: When Canvas initially came to our campus I found it to be very user friendly and easily set up all of my courses. I have worked with the help desk and have been happy with the support that I received.

Cons: The mobile app is has very small text and at times can be tough to read.

Pros: I like Canvas because it is a great resource for all things related to education. The resources available include a syllabus, calendar (which is easily linked to my google calendar), assignments, grades, discussions, files, collaborations, notifications/reminders, and in-class lecture recordings. Students can easily keep up with what is expected, all in one place. Add to that the fact that this resource is available across multiple platforms, including an app you can load on your phone, and this resource really is a one-stop-shop for all things related to education!

Cons: The only challenge with this resource is not actually Canvas itself. Rather, the challenge comes from the varying levels of proficiency among faculty members. Some have taken the time to use the on-line training modules to become proficient in their use; others have simply done the minimum and do not fully utilize the resources available.

Recommendations to other buyers: Canvas is a great resource for both sides of the education equation: students and faculty. It provides a rapid communication platform which can be tailored to individual communication or group notices. It provides a place to update students on changes to due dates, class requirements, and additional resources available to enhance their learning. It allows for meaningful feedback on assignments. It facilitates student-student and faculty-student interaction and collaboration. Truly, this is a resource that does it all for both the student and the teacher.

Pros: Canvas is easy to use. I was uneducated as I began using Canvas but, I took the first steps and started navigating, guessing, clicking on what made sense to me. Before I knew it...I was where I needed to be. I was over whelmed in the beginning but quickly became very comfortable with Canvas. I learned quickly how to respond and participate on the Canvas site.

Cons: The least thing I like is that rather than scrolling, you have to find the link to navigate back and forth.

Recommendations to other buyers: My recommendation is to Go For It! If at first you are overwhelmed and confused, just do it.

Pros: Canvas is extremely open to input from their user base - in particular with the new Canvas Community launched in early 2015. They respond directly to inquiries and are quick to act on trouble issues. Being cloud-based and agile developers, solutions are quickly implemented and available.

Cons: Rapid growth and development have led to some QA/QC issues when new features are deployed. However, Canvas is very responsiveness in addressing and correcting those issues when they crop up.

Recommendations to other buyers: Starting with a small group of volunteer instructors and getting their buy-in prior to campus wide deployment made the transition much easier for us. In addition, we ran for a year with our prior LMS (Blackboard) and Canvas in tandem. Instructors were able to test the waters for and entire year before we pulled the plug. This made the process easier from both a support and a user perspective.

Pros: After using other Learning Management Systems like WebCT, Blackboard, Desire2Learn, & eCollege, I have found that Canvas is better in almost every way. Creating and changing content as well as linking to files can all be done by pointing and clicking. Additionally, it is very easy to switch to HTML coding for advanced users. I like that when I link a pdf document Canvas automatically gives the student the option to preview the document in the same page or open the document in a new browser tab or download load it to a pdf reader program.

Cons: I am very happy with Canvas, however some minor aspects could be improved. The gradebook is very flexible and powerful. It allows me to set grade categories (e.g., homework, quizzes, etc.) and assign grade weights to each category. I can also drop the lowest assignment grades within a grade category. My suggested improvement would be the way it drops the lowest grades. It begins dropping immediately and this tends to confuse the students (e.g., "why was my perfect quiz grade dropped?"). It would be better if I could tell Canvas when to begin dropping grades.

Recommendations to other buyers: eCollege wasn't very good, but D2L and Blackboard are just fine. I like Canvas better, but would be fine if I had to go back to using D2L or Blackboard.

Pros: As a small university, with less than 1000 FTE, when it was time to switch LMS's (from Moodle), I was looking for a company that would treat us as if we were a large institution and prioritize our needs - Canvas was definitely the answer! Throughout the entire process of migration, and our current implementation and management, I have never felt as though we were not a priority or "big enough" to deserve attention. It was the best decision we have made for online learning in the history of our university!

Cons: There are no major dislikes that I can see. There are a few things about the UI that I would like to change, but it is a democratic process on Canvas Commons, and I don't always go with the crowd on updates - but that's okay. With the open source API, I can customize Canvas to almost any degree that I want.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure you take a look at the helpdesk. We pay for Tier 1 Support (the highest level), which has allowed us to cut significant costs without providing an onsite helpdesk for Canvas. It has been worth every penny, and the customer satisfaction is even higher than we could provide with an in-house solution. If you can afford the Tier 1 Support - it will pay for itself in no time!

Comments: The approach that Canvas takes is to first develop your course materials such as assignments, content, resources, discussions, and whatnot and then you can figure out what to do with them. In doing so, you create you modules using these materials. Adding something to a module or moving it to another is effortless. It uses modern web programming practices and operates like a true web application, not like cobbled together web pages from the early 2000's.

Their customer support is great and very responsive, even for the free hosted account.

To host this yourself is a bit more difficult since it requires its own VPS to run on.
