### "GDevelop; A Heavily underrated Gem of a game engine."

July 19, 2025

5.0

My experience with GDevelop have more or less been a journey. This tool has carried me through thick and thin from my early stages as a game developer, till now. Not to mention its supportive and vibrant community is something to also look forward to as the engine gets better and better. Long story short, it's been a very positive experience.

Pros

It's dedication towards being really easy to use and beginner friendly. I also love how lightweight and flexible it is, especially when it comes to doing some tinkering outside the box, and it have allowed a lot of creative things to be done despite the engine's limitations.

Cons

I would say its lightweight nature has its downsides. It is heavily underrated, hence it is not as popular as many other game engines, so the rate of getting new features could take a while. And there are quite a couple of things that are limited or locked behind a paywall. But other than that, it's still a good product.

Construct 2 locked most of its features behind a paywall. So I could make a light prototype or simple game... but only for the web without a license. Whereby with GDevelop, I can export almost anywhere for free. Sure it has its daily limits, but it's better than nothing. As for Unity, it was too overwhelming and complex at the time. Same went with Game Maker studio.

Response from GDevelop

August 22, 2025

Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! On behalf of the team, we really appreciate hearing about your experience. We’re glad GDevelop has supported your creativity and allowed you to experiment freely—its ease of use and flexibility are exactly what we aim for. We also listen closely to suggestions and feedback on our forum, and we’d be curious to know more about the specific limitations you’ve encountered. Some limitations can be overcome using extensions. Many community members have created extensions that we’ve published, and you can access them directly from the engine. We strive to make GDevelop accessible to everyone, even those without financial means. The core features remain free for all, while advanced users can benefit from additional external services if needed. Thank you again for being part of our community and for helping GDevelop grow!

### "Game-Making Swiss Army Knife"

August 22, 2025

5.0

Time and time again it’s my go-to Swiss Army knife for game production. I have tried other engines but always end up back at GDevelop.

Pros

It makes game design beginner-accessible, but without sacrificing quality and features in the process.

Cons

The limits on asset file size, particularly in 3D production. Other than that, perhaps a more intuitive UI when working in 3D environments

Switched from

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)

The process of creating a working product was much more streamlined

Response from GDevelop

August 28, 2025

We’re thrilled to hear that GDevelop makes game design accessible for you. We understand your concerns about asset file size limits, especially for 3D projects, and the desire for a more intuitive UI in 3D environments. We’re excited to share that a new 3D editor is in development, which will provide a more streamlined and user-friendly interface for 3D game creation.

### "Make your first game with GDevelop and share it with ease"

August 20, 2025

3.0

GDevelop is a great game engine to start or to prototype with an active community and many tools but I'm worried for its future.

Pros

It's so easy to make games with GDevelop, you drag and drop, you can read easily what your code is about. The interface is easy to understand. There are ressources online to learn how to use all of its features. The export can be really quick if your project is light and you can easily put it online on gd games to playtest or update a playtest build. And recently, I discovered really useful features like local variables and custom object.

Cons

The asset store is not tedious, not well organized; for the mobile and web browser version you can't use the pixel-art software integrated so I don't use those version a lot. Organisation is not easy. 2D animation lack more advanced tools. Sadly, online forums are less used and the use of Discord doesn't help to archive new user-made knowledge. I don't like all the new generative AI features they added, I know some are just randomizer but I'm afraid the rest is like other generative AI tool that are unethical. And it makes me worry for the future of the software.

Review Source

Response from GDevelop

August 30, 2025

Thank you for your detailed feedback! We’re continuously improving the Asset Store, project organization (folders, extensions, functions, external layouts & events), and other features. The new AskAI provides advice, while the Agent guides users through game creation. GDevelop AI is not trained on your projects—local or cloud—and cloud projects are stored separately from the AI infrastructure. GDevelop AI is built on general-purpose Large Language Models, which can be adapted or fine-tuned internally, but in all cases, no private data is used to improve the AI. Ethics are a priority for us; your data stays yours.

### "Easy Game Making Without Coding"

August 20, 2025

4.0

My overall experience with GDevelop has been great. In a short time, I was already able to make a game, even if it’s just a prototype. It’s really beginner-friendly and fun to use.

Pros

What I like most about GDevelop is how simple it is to use. I don’t need to know coding to start making games, and the event system makes everything easy to understand. It’s perfect for beginners like me, and the best part is, it’s free.

Cons

What I like least about GDevelop is that it doesn’t have 3D editing features yet. Hopefully they’ll add it in the future because that would make it even better.

Switched from

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)

I switched from Unity because it relies heavily on coding, which makes it harder for me. With GDevelop, I can focus on creating games without worrying about programming.

### "Fun, Easy, and Exciting."

August 21, 2025

5.0

I really enjoy using it. It makes me feel like I’m a genius with how easy it is to figure out. Testing and implementing is seamless. Very streamlined.

Pros

It’s easy to learn and test out. Definitely good for those learning coding. I just started and I’ve made pretty sophisticated games so far. What ever you can dream of is easy to make in GDevelope.

Cons

The interface for mobile use could use a bit of work. I use a tablet.which shows the versatility of the app, but the interactions could use a bit of improvement. The keyboard gets in the way of search scrolling.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing GDevelop

It was easy to work with, and there’s plenty of video to help with, so it’s widely used. Looking for a bigger community of creators.

### "GDevelop 5 is the best game development application"

August 20, 2025

4.0

GDevelop 5 allows the learning of game-making. Before that, I used Construct 3 until I moved to GDevelop 5 because I couldn't change the object z-ordering.

Pros

The way to make the game without coding knowledge. I don't have to type an endless amount of code; instead, I just clicking a few and am done.

Cons

Lack of features. During the time, I ended up against a wall because there is no the rightful tool, so I have to make a huge mess to walk around it.

August 25, 2025

I played with Gdevelop and remade some games also found some and bought them from itch. Which had an error loading so i went back to surfing game makers.

Pros

What I liked most about Gdevelop was the exchange of assets without errors. When you buy from gdevelop. But again when loading game ready files made with Gdevelop the are some mild complications. But it still will load.

Cons

I dont like that its not going to let me incorporate an html5 script with just the code in the window box cus it would be great including it with AI in Gdevelop.

### "Gdevelop review "

August 20, 2025

Pros

It's easier to learn than other game engines. And it's free, you don't need any money to start making games with gedevop.

Cons

GDevelop is currently mainly a 2D engine, but we have a major update planned for the second half of 2025 that will add 3D view support in the editor for a better experience. ### "Honest review of GDevelope."

August 20, 2025

5.0

It's been a great experience so far and I would continue to use it and I will even recommend it to my family and friends.

Pros

I love the security of it. While it was a little difficult to understand at first, the user interface became easier. I've not seen the 3D Modeling and Animation yet, however I plan to when I continue to work with my no-code development and the Game engine seemed great. I've not had to contact customer support for anything as of yet. I don't know about the value for money though, I've not gotten that far.

Cons

The cons: I've not seen any cons as of yet, but if I had to name one, it would be where I don't have the money to pay to use it, if I have to.

Thank you very much for your positive feedback. We’re glad to hear that you are enjoying your experience with GDevelop and that the interface has become easier to use over time. Regarding your concern about subscriptions: the free plan is already more than enough to get started, create, and publish games. You can find all the details about the different plans on our website, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs. As for 3D features, they are currently under development. Our team is actively working on them, and they are planned to be available in the second half of 2025. Thank you again for recommending GDevelop to your family and friends—it means a lot to us!

Very good .I am new in game development a GDevelop it's been a great way to start this journey .Also they help publish a promote your game

Pros

Easy to use , highly extensible by using extensions , easy to understand , great community .Great support .I'm satisfied with this software

Cons

It's hard to implement hand written code .I haven't found a clear way to implement code in Javascript , the documentation is not really clear about this neither

Hello Leandro, thank you for your feedback! To add a JavaScript event, simply click the + button in the Events Sheet toolbar and select "JavaScript code". Or from the Events Sheet, right-click on "Add a new event" and select "JavaScript code". You can also search for the word "JavaScript" in the game templates to explore examples of projects already using it. ### "3 Commercial Games Shipped on Steam"

May 22, 2024

5.0

I created and shipped 3 fully developed indie games with GDevelop over the course of 7 years, to critical aclaim by fans. I couldn't have done that with any other engine. Gdevelop made it possible to develop the second game (Red-Tether) in only 7 months, shipping 2000+ units and reaching 98% favorable reviews. Overall the engine is extremely efficient and well suited to make professional 2d games in short timeframes.

Pros

Very fast development cycle, easy to use, lots of tutorials and explanations on the wiki. The no code aspect is developed the the fullest, in contrast to other engines I tried. GDevelop actually does allow you to make full comercial games without actual programming.

Cons

My main grope with GDevelop is that version 4 is unfortunately is no longer supported, eventually preventing me from updating my existing games made in that version. In some regards it also feels like a superior version in terms of usability. GDevelop 5 is slower than 4 in some regards and at times it feels like using a badly optimized website instead of a desctop app. It struggles when project get to substantial sizes. This causes things like massive delays to simple tasks like opening variable list, failing to load event sheets in their entirety or scrolling to random events when using cntrl+z. Loading external data through xml was more flexible in GDevelop 4 and some aspect of the animation viewer where more streamlined.

### "What Are Some Of GDevelop's Features and What Makes Them So Good/Bad?"

September 28, 2023

5.0

I have had a great time using it and I expect to keep using it in the future. I really hope that this keeps expanding with more features and more code added to the no-code part.

Pros

I really like how easy to find and use GDevelop is. Not many things are locked under a paywall and the features are really nice and neat. The idea of letting the community build upon this is an amazing idea and makes practically anything possible! I also love the idea of adding ads into your games to be able to get monetized.

Cons

I dislike the lack of a movement script or a change of perspective. These things would make it way better and much more compatible with other games.

### "Gdevelope got me back into game design!"

September 14, 2023

5.0

I have been using G develop as my primary engine and I have completed one game and I have started on another, which is going to be my first actual game release.

Pros

I tried game design on unreal engine 4, and it was kind of difficult to use. I only used the no code portion of the engine, but it was still so complex, and I was new to game development. I kind of quit because I got nowhere in Unreal engine 4 after about five years. When I started, GDeveloped, I just fell in love with the engine because it was so simple. I actually created basically a full game in a couple months as opposed to years without a success.

Cons

One of the things that unreal has that G developer doesn’t, or at least I don’t know how to use it much and it seems a little bit complicated in the engine. That is the debugging feature. And you, E4, you can run the engine and then look at the code, and it will show real time the engine processing the code, which helps you see where your hiccups are, this was my favorite feature of you in for, and it would be really cool if GDevelop could implement something like that.

### "The PERFECT 2D game engine."

September 8, 2023

5.0

GDevelop has accelerated my game development journey tenfold, and I truly believe that is the case with even the most knowledgeable developers.

Pros

GDevelop is a great 2D game engine, and its only limited by the developer's imagination. The community is extremely helpful, and the community extensions are unbelievably good!

Cons

The editor for 3D games is not quite there yet, and is just an extension of the 2D editor. It also does not include common things like character controllers and collision.

### "Best 2D Game Engine Hands Down"

September 28, 2023

5.0

I would highly recommend this engine to anyone who wants to learn game development or wants to try out 2D development. GDevelop is inexpensive and a fantastic starting point for devs and makes game development accessible.

Pros

GDevelop holds a special place in my heart. It is so easy to pick up and make games in, even if you have no coding experience making game development accessible for once. Recently they started adding 3D game development into the engine, I am extremely excited for the future of the engine.

Cons

I hope to one day see implementation of sprite strip / tileset editors in the IDE like Gamemaker has. It can be a pain to cut up every tileset and import each frame of a player or enemy animation.

### "An overall critic about Gdevelop. "

August 20, 2025

5.0

I discovered Gdevelop when I needed it the most : I was searching for a game engine that would help me create my own game, that was free, easy to use and didn't require any coding. Gdevelop is the solution. It's easy to understand and get used to, you can do pretty much everything inside the app itself, whether it's textures, dialogue trees, animations... The system is clear, and yet detailed at the same time, allowing you to do whatever you want in your game without spending too much time searching how to. Plus, it's really popular, so there are tons of tutorials across the internet, and Gdevelop also has its own courses. I would definitely recommend it.

Pros

The easy-to-use side of it. The fact that it's free, secure, and yet you can still get money from your games afterwards.

Cons

There are annoying bugs and issues, mainly with the cloud system that sometimes refuses to open. But there is reactive customer support, so it is not much of a problem.

### "Happy Newbie"

August 25, 2025

5.0

I cannot tell that it is the best however I can tell that GDevelop is the most appropriate one for a newbie like me

Pros

Firstly I am amazed on how intuitive the interface is! As I am new in this field I have to seek for the most affordable and the most complete tool that would allow me to create my character model and learn how to create sprites then animate them! It was not an easy task at first but we get used to it!

Cons

For the moment, since I did not require any assistance from their customer support I cannot really tell about it but what I can ask for is that the pricing could be more flexible, what I mean is that we could maybe lower the price a bit or maybe adjust it according to the country

What I liked most about Gdevelop was the fact that it was no-code! I easily started making games at the age of 13 and continue making games today with this specific game engine.

Cons

What I least liked about Gdevelop was that sometimes projects get a little buggy. A couple times my projects would freeze and lag in the editor. However, I did make a lot of stuff so that could possibly influence the smoothness of the app.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

I chose Gdevelop over all these products because 1 it was free and 2 because it was no-code like stated before.

### "Developing games with GDevelop since 2021"

May 22, 2024

4.0

It's really easy to use and it's perfect for a beginner. It's great for small games but I don't see it being a good option for bigger projects that will be distributed on mobile

Pros

It's easy to use and code free. This, combined with the "one button" export allowed me to start making games and earn without knowing how to code

Cons

As a developer, I don't have much control over the core parts of my games. I often struggle with the performance of my game (which are low due to JavaScript) and with the integration of certain features that require SDKs. Sometimes it seems like the engine is specifically made for small pixel art games. Game's files on Android are limited to 150mb because there's no way to integrate the Play Store function to split game's assets into multiple files. For admob, it's been months and there's still no way to have GDPR message support in my games.

### "Why G-Develop?"

May 22, 2024

5.0

G-Develop is amazing, I have recommended it to many people at my college, I show up to expos to show off my stuff and people always ask what program I made it in. G-Develop team, thank you for your work!

Pros

Usually with other engines, they grant you powerful tools, but what's the use of a powerful tool if you don't know how to use it? I feel as if this is G-Develop's biggest strength, providing you with understandable code without watering down code's potential and flexibility.

Cons

What I like least about G-Develop is the lagginess- though, most of the time, it's on the user's end to optimize the game to the upmost ability, and it also depends on hardware.
