### "GDevelop; A Heavily underrated Gem of a game engine."

July 19, 2025

5.0

My experience with GDevelop have more or less been a journey. This tool has carried me through thick and thin from my early stages as a game developer, till now. Not to mention its supportive and vibrant community is something to also look forward to as the engine gets better and better. Long story short, it's been a very positive experience.

Pros

It's dedication towards being really easy to use and beginner friendly. I also love how lightweight and flexible it is, especially when it comes to doing some tinkering outside the box, and it have allowed a lot of creative things to be done despite the engine's limitations.

Cons

I would say its lightweight nature has its downsides. It is heavily underrated, hence it is not as popular as many other game engines, so the rate of getting new features could take a while. And there are quite a couple of things that are limited or locked behind a paywall. But other than that, it's still a good product.

Switched from

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)[GameMaker: Studio](https://www.capterra.com/p/158594/GameMaker-Studio/)[Construct 3](https://www.capterra.com/p/201543/Construct-3/)

Construct 2 locked most of its features behind a paywall. So I could make a light prototype or simple game... but only for the web without a license. Whereby with GDevelop, I can export almost anywhere for free. Sure it has its daily limits, but it's better than nothing. As for Unity, it was too overwhelming and complex at the time. Same went with Game Maker studio.

Response from GDevelop

August 22, 2025

Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! On behalf of the team, we really appreciate hearing about your experience. We’re glad GDevelop has supported your creativity and allowed you to experiment freely—its ease of use and flexibility are exactly what we aim for. We also listen closely to suggestions and feedback on our forum, and we’d be curious to know more about the specific limitations you’ve encountered. Some limitations can be overcome using extensions. Many community members have created extensions that we’ve published, and you can access them directly from the engine. We strive to make GDevelop accessible to everyone, even those without financial means. The core features remain free for all, while advanced users can benefit from additional external services if needed. Thank you again for being part of our community and for helping GDevelop grow!

### "Game-Making Swiss Army Knife"

August 22, 2025

5.0

Time and time again it’s my go-to Swiss Army knife for game production. I have tried other engines but always end up back at GDevelop.

Pros

It makes game design beginner-accessible, but without sacrificing quality and features in the process.

Cons

The limits on asset file size, particularly in 3D production. Other than that, perhaps a more intuitive UI when working in 3D environments

Switched from

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)

The process of creating a working product was much more streamlined

Response from GDevelop

August 28, 2025

We’re thrilled to hear that GDevelop makes game design accessible for you. We understand your concerns about asset file size limits, especially for 3D projects, and the desire for a more intuitive UI in 3D environments. We’re excited to share that a new 3D editor is in development, which will provide a more streamlined and user-friendly interface for 3D game creation.

### "Make your first game with GDevelop and share it with ease"

August 20, 2025

3.0

GDevelop is a great game engine to start or to prototype with an active community and many tools but I'm worried for its future.

Pros

It's so easy to make games with GDevelop, you drag and drop, you can read easily what your code is about. The interface is easy to understand. There are ressources online to learn how to use all of its features. The export can be really quick if your project is light and you can easily put it online on gd games to playtest or update a playtest build. And recently, I discovered really useful features like local variables and custom object.

Cons

The asset store is not tedious, not well organized; for the mobile and web browser version you can't use the pixel-art software integrated so I don't use those version a lot. Organisation is not easy. 2D animation lack more advanced tools. Sadly, online forums are less used and the use of Discord doesn't help to archive new user-made knowledge. I don't like all the new generative AI features they added, I know some are just randomizer but I'm afraid the rest is like other generative AI tool that are unethical. And it makes me worry for the future of the software.

Review Source

Response from GDevelop

August 30, 2025

Thank you for your detailed feedback! We’re continuously improving the Asset Store, project organization (folders, extensions, functions, external layouts & events), and other features. The new AskAI provides advice, while the Agent guides users through game creation. GDevelop AI is not trained on your projects—local or cloud—and cloud projects are stored separately from the AI infrastructure. GDevelop AI is built on general-purpose Large Language Models, which can be adapted or fine-tuned internally, but in all cases, no private data is used to improve the AI. Ethics are a priority for us; your data stays yours.

### "Easy Game Making Without Coding"

August 20, 2025

4.0

My overall experience with GDevelop has been great. In a short time, I was already able to make a game, even if it’s just a prototype. It’s really beginner-friendly and fun to use.

Pros

What I like most about GDevelop is how simple it is to use. I don’t need to know coding to start making games, and the event system makes everything easy to understand. It’s perfect for beginners like me, and the best part is, it’s free.

Cons

What I like least about GDevelop is that it doesn’t have 3D editing features yet. Hopefully they’ll add it in the future because that would make it even better.

Switched from

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)

I switched from Unity because it relies heavily on coding, which makes it harder for me. With GDevelop, I can focus on creating games without worrying about programming.

### "Fun, Easy, and Exciting."

August 21, 2025

5.0

I really enjoy using it. It makes me feel like I’m a genius with how easy it is to figure out. Testing and implementing is seamless. Very streamlined.

Pros

It’s easy to learn and test out. Definitely good for those learning coding. I just started and I’ve made pretty sophisticated games so far. What ever you can dream of is easy to make in GDevelope.

Cons

The interface for mobile use could use a bit of work. I use a tablet.which shows the versatility of the app, but the interactions could use a bit of improvement. The keyboard gets in the way of search scrolling.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing GDevelop

It was easy to work with, and there’s plenty of video to help with, so it’s widely used. Looking for a bigger community of creators.

### "GDevelop 5 is the best game development application"

August 20, 2025

4.0

GDevelop 5 allows the learning of game-making. Before that, I used Construct 3 until I moved to GDevelop 5 because I couldn't change the object z-ordering.

Pros

The way to make the game without coding knowledge. I don't have to type an endless amount of code; instead, I just clicking a few and am done.

Cons

Lack of features. During the time, I ended up against a wall because there is no the rightful tool, so I have to make a huge mess to walk around it.

### "Gdevelop is amazing"

Overall it is great, I love it. And the build service is also really great they let us build on servers, 2 builds a day free thats awesome.

Pros

I have been uisng it for quite a while at first I only used it in game jams but now I am using it in a project and it is a great experience really love it.

Cons

It is a little hard to manage your game as it scales, if you are unaware of some tips and tricks.

### "Review by an Gdevelop user for over past 4 years."

May 31, 2024

5.0

My overall experience using Gdevelop over the past four years has been exciting. I have seen the engine grow before my eyes through updates, and they are constantly working to improve it. The community and popularity of Gdevelop have grown significantly, and as these two factors rise, so does the user base. This gives me hope for the future of Gdevelop because I am confident that in a few years, their 3D capabilities will get better, and Gdevelop will be able to compete with top engines.

Pros

I like the ease of use of managing the scenes, editing animations, adding new characters, and, most importantly, how convenient it is for us to change or add game events It is literally the best 2D game engine out there in the market and that too is so cheap. These are the major pros I like about Gdevelop.

Cons

The things I don't like about Gdevelop can be counted on you fingers but their impact is huge if you see from a Game developer POV. for example the lack of 3D features I know it's new but it can be faster, secondly I think pricing while publishing or exporting your game can be little less. These are the cons I feel about Gdevelop.

Switched from

[Godot Engine](https://www.capterra.com/p/234843/Godot-Engine/)

I switched because Godot Engine offered better 3D capabilities compared to what Gdevelop has to offer. But I have not completely stopped using Gdevelop. I do occasionally come and use the 2D side of it.

### "An engine that brought me back into Game Development!"

June 3, 2024

4.0

Pros

I really enjoy how much the community is able to contribute to the growth and features of this game engine and the ease of use is well above all others.

Cons

I feel that this engine is still in its infancy when it comes to quality of life and interface features.

### "Gdevelop review after using it for 2 years"

May 22, 2024

5.0

Overall, I think the game engine is pretty good. Of course, there is always room for improvement, but even at its current state, gdevelop is a masterpiece, and providing it for free is an incredible feat. Just keep adding new features and updating, and you will be motivated to work even harder to improve it, knowing that your software is loved by so many.

Pros

Pros: If I have to summarize my whole game development journey, the pros I felt were Gdevelop being free and open source compared to all other no-code game engines. No one on the market is as good as Gdevelop, plus it is no-code, which makes it way less complicated, and its drag-and-drop nature makes it a perfect go-to engine for your 2D game.

Cons

Cons: The things I dislike about Gdevelop are as follows: first, their pricing. Recently, while I understand that they rely on donations and subscriptions to support their business model, the issue is that it is no longer very affordable. The increase in subscription prices is very noticeable. I hope you guys work on it. Secondly, I dislike Gdevelop's 3D compatibility. 3D still lacks many basic features, but I also understand that it is a 2D engine after all, and 3D is very new for them too.

Pros

GDevelop's open-source model and active community foster continuous innovation and improvement. This flexibility enabled me to test different forms of game design and such nongame genres as competitive and social/puzzle games.

Cons

I found issues with this platform especially with mobile devices especially with resource hugs games. The creation of the tilemap to me felt limiting as compared to tile editing tools such as Tiled.

Cons

I have benefited lots from GDevelop because of its open source nature and support for multiple platforms. The idea of the event-based system provided me with a way to create quite elaborate game mechanics without using conventional code.

Cons

### "Why G-Develop?"

May 22, 2024

5.0

G-Develop is amazing, I have recommended it to many people at my college, I show up to expos to show off my stuff and people always ask what program I made it in. G-Develop team, thank you for your work!

Pros

Usually with other engines, they grant you powerful tools, but what's the use of a powerful tool if you don't know how to use it? I feel as if this is G-Develop's biggest strength, providing you with understandable code without watering down code's potential and flexibility.

Cons

What I like least about G-Develop is the lagginess- though, most of the time, it's on the user's end to optimize the game to the upmost ability, and it also depends on hardware.

### "Gdevelop For Making Dreams Come True"

May 22, 2024

5.0

I love Gdevelop and I would probably use this until the end of time. No joke everything is easy and simple to understand. This would be a perfect engine for people who are getting into game dev and even experienced devs.

Pros

What I liked most about Gdevelop was the fact that it was no-code! I easily started making games at the age of 13 and continue making games today with this specific game engine.

Cons

What I least liked about Gdevelop was that sometimes projects get a little buggy. A couple times my projects would freeze and lag in the editor. However, I did make a lot of stuff so that could possibly influence the smoothness of the app.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

I chose Gdevelop over all these products because 1 it was free and 2 because it was no-code like stated before.

### "GDevelop Stands Out in Game Development"

May 22, 2024

5.0

Pros

GDevelop is great for its user-friendly interface and no-coding-required approach, making it accessible to me, a beginner. I really enjoy its powerful and flexible event system supports both visual scripting and JavaScript so I have the option to choose between VS and JS. The platform's ability to export games to multiple platforms is also incredibly helpful since doing that process myself is complicated and difficult. The extensive documentation, tutorials, and a built-in asset library really helped me learn the software and jump into making games immediately. I also appreciate the open-source community that ensures continuous updates and improvements. Overall, it's an amazing piece of game development software.

Cons

I'm personally not a fan of the engine being marketed as 'free'. It is partially true, there is a free tier but a lot of features are locked away behind pay walls like publishing games to IOS. I understand that running this software is expensive and staff need to be compensated but marketing it as free feels a little dishonest to people just learning about the software.

### "GDevelop: The Free and No-code engine - Perfect for those who don't know how to program!"

April 19, 2024

5.0

GDevelop is a easy to use engine that requires no coding! I myself am an artist, this engine allowed me to make my own games even though I don't know how to program code. Its been a blast using this engine and making my own games in it. The best part is the the IDE is open-source, meaning I don't have to pay for a subscription if I want to!

Pros

You don’t need to be a coding expert to use GDevelop. It’s super user-friendly and you can make a game in no time. The event system is a total game-changer for me. It’s perfect for beginners. The Engine has an awesome community, the folks in the GDevelop community are super cool and helpful. They’ve got a new template for in-app purchases that’s way easier than other engines. Need to prototype fast? GDevelop’s got your back. You can switch from a prototype to a real project in no time.

Cons

The built-in pixel art editor, “Piskel”, can be a bit of a pain. It sometimes crashes when you hit undo. Feature Overload: There are so many features that it can be tough to figure out how to use them all. While GDevelop is great for basic 2D games, it doesn’t pack the same punch as some of its competitors like Unity or Unreal Engine, since it runs in Javascript and HTML its not recommended for making big games. The documentation could be clearer, its a bit vague and outdated. Although the tutorials on youtube from the official channel are pretty good. The mobile app has almost all the same options as the desktop version, but the layout isn’t as useful, and arranging sprites/zooming can be frustrating. The 3D feature is still pretty new and needs some work.

### "Powerful and Accessible Game Development Tool"

May 22, 2024

4.0

Pros

GDevelop stands out for its user-friendly interface and robust feature set. The no-code approach makes it accessible for beginners, while still offering advanced features for more experienced developers. The extensive library of pre-made assets and behaviors allows for rapid prototyping and development. The active community and comprehensive documentation are also major plus points, making it easier to find support and inspiration.

Cons

While GDevelop is powerful, it can sometimes feel a bit limiting for very complex projects due to its no-code nature. The performance on larger projects can occasionally be sluggish, and there are a few advanced features that are still in development. Additionally, the export options, while extensive, could benefit from more optimization for different platforms. In very specific cases, some libraries can be limiting. For example, the voice recognition libraries are only usable if the project is web-based and not if it is running locally on the user's PC.

Gdevelop gave me a new spark of energy by providing a way to make games with my own art since I can't find a coding partner. It is easy to use and a lot of tutorials online even in my language (portuguese)

Pros

Gdevelop is an easy to use tool for prototyping and creating 2d games with ease. It provides an extensive list of extensions to customize your game.

Cons

As a 2d pixel artist I'd like to have a more robust pixelart editor and a full featured 3d engine.

### "Great teaching environment for children wanting to move beyond Scratch, but not ready for coding."

September 13, 2023

5.0

It is a perfect fit for our STEAM programming classes. I don't ever know what type of game the class will develop as we start with Concept Ideas, Prototyping and Development. Gdevelop's flexibility lets us go many directions from resource management, to top down adventures, to platform games. While I occasionally have to step in and lower the students expectations, that is usually a time restriction rather lack of GDevelop's capabilites.

Pros

It provides all the features for complete 2d games without overwhelming my elementary students. It's development and capabilities have sky-rocketed over the last couple of years and I'm excited to see where it heads from here.

Cons

While I occasionally come across bugs in the different exports they are either quickly resolved or adequate work around offered.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

A good balance between capability and ease of use.
