### "GDevelop; A Heavily underrated Gem of a game engine."

July 19, 2025

5.0

My experience with GDevelop have more or less been a journey. This tool has carried me through thick and thin from my early stages as a game developer, till now. Not to mention its supportive and vibrant community is something to also look forward to as the engine gets better and better. Long story short, it's been a very positive experience.

Pros

It's dedication towards being really easy to use and beginner friendly. I also love how lightweight and flexible it is, especially when it comes to doing some tinkering outside the box, and it have allowed a lot of creative things to be done despite the engine's limitations.

Cons

I would say its lightweight nature has its downsides. It is heavily underrated, hence it is not as popular as many other game engines, so the rate of getting new features could take a while. And there are quite a couple of things that are limited or locked behind a paywall. But other than that, it's still a good product.

Switched from

Construct 2 locked most of its features behind a paywall. So I could make a light prototype or simple game... but only for the web without a license. Whereby with GDevelop, I can export almost anywhere for free. Sure it has its daily limits, but it's better than nothing. As for Unity, it was too overwhelming and complex at the time. Same went with Game Maker studio.

Response from GDevelop

August 22, 2025

Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! On behalf of the team, we really appreciate hearing about your experience. We’re glad GDevelop has supported your creativity and allowed you to experiment freely—its ease of use and flexibility are exactly what we aim for. We also listen closely to suggestions and feedback on our forum, and we’d be curious to know more about the specific limitations you’ve encountered. Some limitations can be overcome using extensions. Many community members have created extensions that we’ve published, and you can access them directly from the engine. We strive to make GDevelop accessible to everyone, even those without financial means. The core features remain free for all, while advanced users can benefit from additional external services if needed. Thank you again for being part of our community and for helping GDevelop grow!

### "Game-Making Swiss Army Knife"

August 22, 2025

5.0

Time and time again it’s my go-to Swiss Army knife for game production. I have tried other engines but always end up back at GDevelop.

Pros

It makes game design beginner-accessible, but without sacrificing quality and features in the process.

Cons

The limits on asset file size, particularly in 3D production. Other than that, perhaps a more intuitive UI when working in 3D environments

Switched from

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)

The process of creating a working product was much more streamlined

Response from GDevelop

August 28, 2025

We’re thrilled to hear that GDevelop makes game design accessible for you. We understand your concerns about asset file size limits, especially for 3D projects, and the desire for a more intuitive UI in 3D environments. We’re excited to share that a new 3D editor is in development, which will provide a more streamlined and user-friendly interface for 3D game creation.

### "Make your first game with GDevelop and share it with ease"

August 20, 2025

3.0

GDevelop is a great game engine to start or to prototype with an active community and many tools but I'm worried for its future.

Pros

It's so easy to make games with GDevelop, you drag and drop, you can read easily what your code is about. The interface is easy to understand. There are ressources online to learn how to use all of its features. The export can be really quick if your project is light and you can easily put it online on gd games to playtest or update a playtest build. And recently, I discovered really useful features like local variables and custom object.

Cons

The asset store is not tedious, not well organized; for the mobile and web browser version you can't use the pixel-art software integrated so I don't use those version a lot. Organisation is not easy. 2D animation lack more advanced tools. Sadly, online forums are less used and the use of Discord doesn't help to archive new user-made knowledge. I don't like all the new generative AI features they added, I know some are just randomizer but I'm afraid the rest is like other generative AI tool that are unethical. And it makes me worry for the future of the software.

Review Source

Response from GDevelop

August 30, 2025

Thank you for your detailed feedback! We’re continuously improving the Asset Store, project organization (folders, extensions, functions, external layouts & events), and other features. The new AskAI provides advice, while the Agent guides users through game creation. GDevelop AI is not trained on your projects—local or cloud—and cloud projects are stored separately from the AI infrastructure. GDevelop AI is built on general-purpose Large Language Models, which can be adapted or fine-tuned internally, but in all cases, no private data is used to improve the AI. Ethics are a priority for us; your data stays yours.

### "Easy Game Making Without Coding"

August 20, 2025

4.0

My overall experience with GDevelop has been great. In a short time, I was already able to make a game, even if it’s just a prototype. It’s really beginner-friendly and fun to use.

Pros

What I like most about GDevelop is how simple it is to use. I don’t need to know coding to start making games, and the event system makes everything easy to understand. It’s perfect for beginners like me, and the best part is, it’s free.

Cons

What I like least about GDevelop is that it doesn’t have 3D editing features yet. Hopefully they’ll add it in the future because that would make it even better.

Switched from

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)

I switched from Unity because it relies heavily on coding, which makes it harder for me. With GDevelop, I can focus on creating games without worrying about programming.

### "Fun, Easy, and Exciting."

August 21, 2025

5.0

I really enjoy using it. It makes me feel like I’m a genius with how easy it is to figure out. Testing and implementing is seamless. Very streamlined.

Pros

It’s easy to learn and test out. Definitely good for those learning coding. I just started and I’ve made pretty sophisticated games so far. What ever you can dream of is easy to make in GDevelope.

Cons

The interface for mobile use could use a bit of work. I use a tablet.which shows the versatility of the app, but the interactions could use a bit of improvement. The keyboard gets in the way of search scrolling.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing GDevelop

It was easy to work with, and there’s plenty of video to help with, so it’s widely used. Looking for a bigger community of creators.

### "GDevelop 5 is the best game development application"

August 20, 2025

4.0

GDevelop 5 allows the learning of game-making. Before that, I used Construct 3 until I moved to GDevelop 5 because I couldn't change the object z-ordering.

Pros

The way to make the game without coding knowledge. I don't have to type an endless amount of code; instead, I just clicking a few and am done.

Cons

Lack of features. During the time, I ended up against a wall because there is no the rightful tool, so I have to make a huge mess to walk around it.

### "Its fairly easy to learn Gdevelop coding. Its kind of similar to visual scripting."

August 25, 2025

I played with Gdevelop and remade some games also found some and bought them from itch. Which had an error loading so i went back to surfing game makers.

Pros

What I liked most about Gdevelop was the exchange of assets without errors. When you buy from gdevelop. But again when loading game ready files made with Gdevelop the are some mild complications. But it still will load.

Cons

I dont like that its not going to let me incorporate an html5 script with just the code in the window box cus it would be great including it with AI in Gdevelop.

Pros

It's easier to learn than other game engines. And it's free, you don't need any money to start making games with gedevop.

Cons

Thank you for your feedback Leon! Your point about 3D is valid. GDevelop is currently mainly a 2D engine, but we have a major update planned for the second half of 2025 that will add 3D view support in the editor for a better experience. ### "Honest review of GDevelope."

August 20, 2025

5.0

It's been a great experience so far and I would continue to use it and I will even recommend it to my family and friends.

Pros

I love the security of it. While it was a little difficult to understand at first, the user interface became easier. I've not seen the 3D Modeling and Animation yet, however I plan to when I continue to work with my no-code development and the Game engine seemed great. I've not had to contact customer support for anything as of yet. I don't know about the value for money though, I've not gotten that far.

Cons

The cons: I've not seen any cons as of yet, but if I had to name one, it would be where I don't have the money to pay to use it, if I have to.

Thank you very much for your positive feedback. We’re glad to hear that you are enjoying your experience with GDevelop and that the interface has become easier to use over time. Regarding your concern about subscriptions: the free plan is already more than enough to get started, create, and publish games. You can find all the details about the different plans on our website, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs. As for 3D features, they are currently under development. Our team is actively working on them, and they are planned to be available in the second half of 2025. Thank you again for recommending GDevelop to your family and friends—it means a lot to us!

### "Brings me closer to my childhood dream of publishing my own games."

September 5, 2023

5.0

There are a lot of tools for developing videogames these days, and most of them are free to some degree... But there's always a catch. For some it's the insane system requirements, for others is a steep learning curve, and for some others it's the cost. And others are just overkill if you just want to make a running or platform pixel art game. With GDevelop you get just the right tools, its very lightweight on resources, you can start from free and the learning curve it's almost inexistent, you dont even need experience coding. A compact, well optimized package that can take you from prototype to final product, quick and easy, and on lots of platforms.

Pros

Really lightweight on system resources, I've even tried it on my phone and it seems totally possible to fully develop and publish at least a simple game on it. You can quickly preview your work in progress in a browser window from within the app. It provides you with everything you need to create your project from scratch and even publish the final product.Feeling lost? You can just import one of the several premade starter and tutorial projects and start building from there. There's also plenty of official videos and documentation, and they're all really easy to understand. Skill level? From zero to hero. The price? You can start from free, there's a lot of free resources and assets and if you want to go the next level, the premium ones are really accesible. You can also subscribe to the premium version with cloud features, etc, the starting point being literally that of a sandwich a month.

Cons

I personally won't use it, but 3D seems a bit limited, at least for big complex projects... For simple lightweight games it seems good enough.

### "A solo gamedev's review of GDevelop"

September 13, 2023

5.0

Creating games with GDevelop has been a fun & fast experience so far, it's enabled me to quickly push prototypes and see what works and what doesn't. once a prototype is approved fully finished the game into something playable doesn't take as long as other engine's because of its no code ide.

Pros

Gdevelop has a lot of features that are super nice and well implemented, the no code editor makes it super easy to create a base game within minutes, the animations for 2d games are really easy to set up aswell and makes using gdevelop a true alternative to other engines.

Cons

I feel like the monetization, aswell as the steam integration needs to be added/improved. its documentation is a bit unclear and steam isnt implemented at all which is a highly requested feature.

### "A thorough review of Gdevelop"

September 13, 2023

5.0

Overall, I have been using Gdevelop for a little over 5 years now and in all my time of using it, I have never once felt that it has let me down. Ever since the beginning it was one of the most beginner friendly and easy to work with/understand game engine I have ever worked with. I have made so many games over the years and have learned so much. Crazy enough as it sounds, despite being a no-code engine, learning the Gdevelop events sheet has actually made it significantly easier when I started learning coding languages such as JavaScript and C#. I also really love watching Gdevelop grow and update more and more over time. There are so many new features and changes that have been added since I first started, and all for the better. In turn I have also seen my games getting better and higher quality due to my skills increasing and being given more access to new tools. In conclusion, I personally love Gdevelop and it easily fits my every need when developing games.

Pros

I love it's simple and easy to understand interface as well as it's kind and welcoming community. I can't stress enough how natural it feels to use Gdevelop compared to other game engines. Everything just flows so nicely and even at times when I run into roadblocks, there is always someone willing to help out.

Cons

Despite all of the absolutley spectacular things about Gdevelop, nothing will ever be perfect. However, Gdevelop sure isn't too far from perfect in my eyes. My only real complaints is that occasionally the built in pixel art editor "Piskel" will crash after I press undo "Ctrl + Z". Which in turn makes me lose any progress I made to the sprite I was editing or drawing. Again though, this does happen quite rarely.

Alternatives considered

[Unity](https://www.capterra.com/p/158591/Unity/)[Unreal Engine](https://www.capterra.com/p/158599/Unreal-Engine/)[Godot Engine](https://www.capterra.com/p/234843/Godot-Engine/)

Reason for choosing GDevelop

To put it plain and simple, Gdevelop was significantly more welcoming and beginner friendly than all of the other mentioned game engines. Along with that, each other one had it's own other problems. Starting off with my personal least favorite. Unreal Engine not only is a massive game engine that takes up over 100gb of storage, but on my gaming desktop computer it still barely ran and was incredibly laggy. This overall made Unreal Engine practically unusable for me, and to top it off, I personally found C++ to also be a very difficult coding language to work with. Second was Godot, I don't have much to say about this one since from what I tested it out, it kind of just seemed to be a slightly less capable Unity. I also personally just didn't really like the UI too much either. I don't really have anything against Godot, it just simply wasn't really for me. Finally is Unity, I honestly enjoyed working with Unity, however I mostly wanted and preferred to make 2d games since I love working with pixel art. Though Unity can also make incredible 2d games, I decided that it was too overly complicated for what I wanted to make. In the end, Gdevelop was the clear perfect game engine for me, it fit all of my needs, and was much easier to work with and understand as a beginner.

### "Not a programmer Try a no-code IDE"

September 21, 2023

4.0

I love using the software, very easy to set-up projects and export them to different platforms. I like that they added a pixel editor and sound editor to the game engine.

Pros

What I most love a Gdevelop is that the IDE is so similar to visual studios, I pick up on things right way. Even if your a novice, Gdevelop has plenty of useful videos on Youtube. I enjoy the no-code code approach, this is helpful to someone that doesn't understand coding but what to create something.

Cons

The only feature that is truly missing is an option for console export like Xbox, PS and the Switch.

### "A perfect entry to game development for anyone"

May 22, 2024

5.0

I have had a blast using it and would recommend it to anyone. I've created a large number of prototypes and using GDevelop has even encouraged me to get into 3D art again as I have the time to work on the art now it doesn't take me hours to make a game in other engines!

Pros

The ability to cloud save is amazing. It allows me to develop on my PC or Mac or even phone/tablet without having to worry about GitHub or similar online saving. An in built art creation and editing tool is great to have and Piskel, built into GDevelop, is an amazing tool. Such a powerful tool. A simple ability to add new objects as assets either provided on the GDevelop Asset Store or my own assets is easy to use and clear to integrate. Adding new conditions and events make a lot of sense, and everything is contextual which means debugging is usually only required to ensure everything is happening in the right order. You can put together a prototype that you can expand upon in no time at all.

Cons

I wish there were more in built tutorials on some of the more difficult aspects - especially 3D. I understand 3D is new but creating 3D FPS or 3rd Person Controllers would be an amazing addition.

There were sometimes strange physics occurring especially when dealing with collision. There was a need to change settings multiple times as I wanted the objects to interact smoothly.

### "Great teaching environment for children wanting to move beyond Scratch, but not ready for coding."

September 13, 2023

5.0

It is a perfect fit for our STEAM programming classes. I don't ever know what type of game the class will develop as we start with Concept Ideas, Prototyping and Development. Gdevelop's flexibility lets us go many directions from resource management, to top down adventures, to platform games. While I occasionally have to step in and lower the students expectations, that is usually a time restriction rather lack of GDevelop's capabilites.

Pros

It provides all the features for complete 2d games without overwhelming my elementary students. It's development and capabilities have sky-rocketed over the last couple of years and I'm excited to see where it heads from here.

Cons

While I occasionally come across bugs in the different exports they are either quickly resolved or adequate work around offered.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

A good balance between capability and ease of use.

### "Must learn for all kids"

I teach coding to beginners of all ages. Sometimes, I have to create an activity or a game, using which I can teach coding concept to beginners in fun way.

Pros

Easy of learning. You can create a game in 1st 5 mins of its use. You can create more complex games after learning about behavior's. Creating your first platformer is just 5 min away. Any one can create games with gdevelop. It helps you visualize sharpen your problem solving skills.

Cons

Tutorials about behavior's and their internals are very less.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

Creating prototypes is just few key press away.

### "Gdevelop Review"

May 22, 2024

5.0

Overall, using GDevelop was a really fun experience. I have been using it for 2+ years and have made many mini games in it before. Really a good game engine if you want to make 2D mobile games, or if you want to participate in game jams.

Pros

GdDevelop is a really easy-to-use game engine that has many built-in features that makes game development a breeze. It also has a great, growing community with lots of potential. It also van export to many platforms, such as web, android and pc. Moreover, the game engine is open-sourced and can be used completely for free.

Cons

Asset management can get quite messy while using GDevelop. For example, the animation editor would require you to splice your spritesheet into individual frames first in an external engine before you can use it in your game. Another thing is that the features may be quite slow or buggy. Exported games (especially web exports) would also sometimes have occasional drops in frame rate.

### "Keep it simple"

September 22, 2023

5.0

Some design platforms are a little too simple, and others are a bit too complicated, but GDevelop sits right in the middle. Plus you can keep it super simple, or use Javascript and other options to get about as complicated as you need to.

Pros

I liked having a more visual setup. I was disappointed in the industry wide discontinuation of programs like VisualBasic, the real one, not Visual Studio. If I want to add a button in a program, I would like to drag and drop it where I like it, pick the colors the size etc. which is tedious in code. GDevelop does this with game design, you get a pretty good idea of what your finished product will be, before you compile it.

Cons

The 3d aspects are a little limited, but GDevelop isn't a 3D platform to begin with. If you are pretty 3D modeling, animating etc savy, you can make it work quite nicely though.
