### "Great free alternative to MS Office"

May 9, 2025

5.0

Satisfied with Libre Office - it saves a ton of money and is easy to use. Sufficient if you are just using Word, Spreadsheets and Presentations.

Pros

It's free to use, and very closely resembles Microsoft Office 365 in features. MS Office costs a lot of money to buy for multiple users.

Cons

If you use Libre Office, you should convert the files to docx / pdf before sharing with someone, else receivers get confused as they are not familiar with the file extensions

### "Great, affordable Microsoft Word alternative"

May 19, 2025

5.0

A great, affordable alternative to Microsoft Word. It requires extra effort to save the documents to make them Word-compatible, but the rest of the experience is smooth.

Pros

The freeware setup gives as many options as Microsoft Word.

Cons

Saving documents requires additional steps to make them compatible with Microsoft Word.

### "Good enough for very basic use"

January 2, 2025

3.0

I’ve used it when I needed text processing or basic spreadsheets, but it won’t be enough to replace it in somewhat advanced use cades.

Pros

It’s free and has a significant amount features, you’ll be able to do most of what you can do with other office suites.

Cons

Sometimes formatting by come become me troublesome and you can’t see files designed as they were in Microsoft office.

### "More than you will probably need."

November 14, 2024

5.0

I started using it back in the Open Office days before the fork to Libre Office and now I keep on using it as a professional graphic designer. While not mission critical for my job, I do need to use office applications from time to time and Libre Office cover my needs fast and reliable. I mostly use Writer that provide tools that you usually see in DTP applications. I also use Calc and Draw from time to time. Specifically Draw is so stable and good that once there was a need to convert a landscape PPT from a client to portrait so I can print it, something that I would prefer Affinity Publisher any other day, but this would require some exporting that I simple didn't had time to do, and Draw managed just fine to open the PPT and had the tools to let me re-arrange everything and export to a PDF file that I then printed as booklet. I have also installed it for my family members like my mother and sisters and all of them used Libre Office just fine, even if they only ever learned to use MS Office. I do believe that most people don't need anything more than what Libre Office have to offer.

Pros

It is a full suite of office applications that for most people will do more than just fine.

Cons

Honestly there is not much not to like. It is not like I have found something that made me use something else

### "Basic software but with mediocre user interface"

January 3, 2025

4.0

I’m also using it to automatically convert docx to pdf and for that use case it works well for simple docx files. For more complex files the output is sometimes messed up when there are headers/ footers, or background images. It also works on windows, Linux and Mac which is great

Pros

It opens many types of files : Docs, pptx, and xlsx but also the open formats odt, odd. The basic features work pretty well

Cons

The ui is a bit cluttered, if you’re used to word it will seem more complex to use. The rendering will differ sometimes compared to Microsoft office

Alternatives considered

### "Libre Office is the greatest"

May 19, 2025

5.0

I have not used it in about ten years. I am glad I discovered it. If it were not for Capterra i would have forgotten about it.

Pros

It installs really fast. It is a great alternative to Word that is so expensive. I am glad I found something that is not office and it is not open office. I think open office is not bad but this version of Libre has more file saving formats.

Cons

I had forgotten about it. I have been a bard for a long time and I am a published author so i should have known about this.

Reason for choosing LibreOffice

It installs fast and it loads fast, I really like having it on my computer.

### "A Great eBook Creation Software"

October 10, 2024

4.0

I've been using it for over three years. It has a great editor with many functions. There are regular updates with improved features. It's not any more difficult to learn than Microsoft Word, but it's not the same, so it took me a little time to learn the functions that I needed.

Pros

I use LibreOffice to secure my course ebooks after creating them in Microsoft Word. They offer more functions than Word to protect them from being copied I also use it to create short ebooks for my courses, art and to sell digital information. It's a great and diverse tool for ebook creation.

Cons

Although I'm able to make the ebook text documents created in Microsoft Word secure with passwords and disabling functions, the right margins are sometimes cut off.

### "LibreOffice Review "

December 19, 2024

LibreOffice is a powerful, free office suite with strong file compatibility. However, its interface could be more polished, and performance may lag with larger documents.

Pros

I appreciate LibreOffice for being a powerful, open-source suite with a strong feature set and compatibility with various document formats. Its community-driven development ensures regular updates and improvements.

Cons

I find LibreOffice's interface to be less polished compared to some other office suites, which can make it feel less intuitive. Additionally, performance can lag with larger files or complex documents.

### "LibreOffice, Free and Quality Alternative to Word"

August 16, 2024

5.0

Overall, I've been very pleased. It handles large documents well. I often have to open several novels at a time and copy/paste large amounts. Most of the time, it even does this without a problem.

Pros

It works like older versions of Word, and I like that! Word has changed radically several times and I hated it. Version after version, the learning curve is not steep. Has all the features I need.

Cons

Have had some formatting problems, particularly with higher-numbered headings.

### "An alternative option to Microsoft 365 products"

May 2, 2024

5.0

I've been using LibreOffice as an alternative to Microsoft 365 products since they are not available on Linux. LibreOffice is really good, the performance is great and does all necessary functions.

Pros

Cons

Some feature icons are too small in my opinion.

### "Greatest document management solution for Linux users"

July 15, 2021

5.0

In the last months i have been testing different Linux distributions, leaving Windows i had no longer their Office package and i needed a new software for Document management. Once i installed Kubuntu i found LibreOffice extremely helpful, trustworthy and intuitive.

Pros

I'm very satisfied with its variety of options, inside this software everyone can access databases management with LibreOffice Base, presentation creation and edition with LibreOffice Impress, general text document creation with LibreOffice Writer and even calculation and information analysis with LibreOffice Calc. It automatically saves the progress made every several minutes preventing progress loss, what's more, it has a feature for data recovery that allows to continue any assignment or document as it was left before any accidental occurrence happened. Their format compatibility provides helpful overall usage and saves time as file conversion is no longer needed. You can export text documents as pdfs or odt formats which tend to be more common among MacOS and Linux users. As a work environment their user interface is very customizable, making it highly flexible for reading oriented tasks as well as document producing ones.

Cons

One relevant downside is the fact that it lacks mobile app deployment, what may result tedious if the personal mobile phone is closely related with work activities. Nonetheless, for Desktop-centered activities it proves to be highly reliable and efficient.

### "A worth replacement for commercial suites"

October 14, 2021

4.0

I used for several years Openoffice and moved flawlessly to LibreOffice. Also if I have an institutional license for Office, I only use it in few occasion when I have to work on extremely macro-configured documents to be shared with colleagues. I daily work with LibreOffice, I appreciate the alternative to commercial suites and love to support it!

Pros

It is free, it has a wide support and development, with improvements and bugs correction. I cannot but support FLOSS (free libre open source). It has all the major features of other more expensive suites, and I prefer so much its interface compared with Office... There are a lot of free extensions to configure the app at your taste, and a strong community to rely when looking for support.

Cons

I find weak the image management in Write, and the lack of recording presentations in Impress (the latter not really relevant in a daily workflow).

### "LibreOffice - An alternative to Microsoft Office "

December 11, 2022

3.0

LibreOffice can be good for a quick editing of documents, which aren’t demanding or complex. A simple text document can be easily formatted and edited with no issues. But for professional work, like a modern presentation or a beautifully crafted chart, LibreOffice cannot do this flawlessly. These unexpected errors are horrible and should be fixed as soon as possible, because nobody wants files to be lost for no reason. I ended up switching to the free Microsoft office web package, which I use occasionally. I couldn’t stand reinstalling the whole LibreOffice package every now and then and being constantly asked to donate.

Pros

Whether presentations or charts, tables or documents, LibreOffice makes all of this possible completely free of charge. All the most important features, like creating presentations or excel tables/calculation, a person needs for document management can be found, implemented and exported in this program. Another great thing is that it’s open and free and multilingual, so anyone can use it.

Cons

Although being a free alternative to Microsoft Office, it still has a lot of issues. The general layout of LibreOffice is a bit outdated and slow. It happened a lot during my days of using LibreOffice writer that the program experienced an „unexpected error“ and my files sometimes even got lost, which made me very angry. But we should keep in mind that LibreOffice doesn’t charge a penny for their products. Another bad thing is that there’s no automatic updating yet. So you have to manually reinstall the whole package, if there are new updates, which made me frustrated.

Switched from

I couldn’t afford a very expensive subscription of Microsoft Office, until I found out there was a free web based Microsoft-Office option, which made me switch back to Microsoft Office.

### "The Best Free and Cross-Platform Office Suite Available, Period"

March 25, 2019

5.0

Because there is no need to get a license in order to use it, it has been helpful in giving friends and family members who aren't tech-savvy access to this software on their own computer to be able to work freely on their own projects. It has worked really well on all major operating systems and it is a breeze to help out when something is not going as well as planned, since one file will open exactly the same on any machine. There is even a portable version of the suite that makes it possible to execute the software directly from a USB stick, which was also handy more than once. In work settings where there is no budget to install paid software on all machines, LibreOffice really is a lifesaver. Even though it is free, it has all the necessary features to get the job done and that is why it consistently becomes the number one choice to use, especially on Linux systems and in companies with less than ideal budget.

Pros

LibreOffice has a complete suite of tools that includes a word processor, a spreadsheet application, tools for drawing and presentation as well as a database manager. The word processor integrates flawlessly with other components of the suite: you can easily enter mathematical formulae, insert tables from a spreadsheet or drawings as multimedia files. It can also export to PDF with great results any kind of document that's opened with it. Apart from PDF, it can also export to various other formats depending on the type of document (including PNG, SVG, HTML, EPUB, etc.). One other clear advantage of LibreOffice is that it is free (as in open source) and uses by default open formats, which makes it easy to use with different software that use the same file extensions. It's also quite lightweight and works even on older systems. Since it works on different operating systems including Windows, MacOS and Linux, it can be used in work environments with machines used for different purposes without any problem. There are many templates and extensions available to customize the experience and the way styles and paragraphs are handled makes more sense than with other alternatives: it is clear what result is obtained and changes are easy to apply to a whole document.

Cons

One has to be careful with the database manager as there are a number of cases of corrupted databases that have been reported. LibreOffice also tries its best to import files that use a format from other popular suites but sometimes, the formatting will not match exactly what is expected, especially with DOCX and XLXS files when special components such as macros are involved. Because it uses Java to be cross-platform, it can feel slower than other alternatives and it doesn't look as well integrated as native applications for that reason. It can be tedious to design flowcharts with LibreOffice Draw because aligning elements between each other and resizing them is not always as intuitive as it could be. Opening PPTX (PowerPoint) presentations with LibreOffice Impress sometimes causes notorious lags and display errors with multimedia files. There are non-obvious workarounds, but this can be an issue when receiving presentations that are designed for other pieces of software.

### "A solid MS Word alternative"

September 29, 2020

5.0

Very fast up time, small footprint, efficient and effective with a familiar interface. I use it for first drafts of my books. I use it alongside MS Office (which has no problem dealing with the files) knowing that if I should ever be unable to maintain my MS licence, all is not lost. Definitely recommended for those who need some serious power without a serious price tag.

Pros

For many people, MS Office is bloated, expensive and a resource hog. While Libre Office doesn't sport all the powerful features of MS Office, as a practical, no-nonsense office suite it can do just about anything you want except the very fancy stuff which, to be fair, few of us use!). For those on low incomes or even those more used to older versions of Office, this is a very efficient alternative with a familiar front end and a much smaller footprint, making it ideal for laptop computers with minimal hard-drive space. It's kept up to date, there are forums where any issues can be highlighted and it does what it says on the tin. If you're looking for an alternative to MS Office that's free and will do the job in most cases, this is the one you want.

Cons

There are features in MS Office full version you won't find here, but as most of us are used to using a Word Processor with occasional forays into spreadsheets, the bulk of users won't miss them. There are, of course, other open source alternatives to those programmes too. The point is, if all you're looking for is the basics, this'll do it and it has the overwhelming advantage of being free (though you can donate if you care to). If you want more, you may have to download others that aren't fully integrated, which is rather more fiddly but is doable.

### "Not the best(writer review)"

March 14, 2022

3.0

Very poor experience. Lack of creativity.

Pros

I have used this software for the better part of a year and altough it is free as mentioned, it is not worth the hassle of downloading and attempting a book with it. I will be moving to bigger software. Still a nice alternative to other more expensive programs.

Cons

Lack of a sufficient choice of fonts and tools necessary. Writing is like art and if I need to do so I must have the correct tools available at all times.
