IT Director Religious Institutions Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Great Open Source VPN server" September 23, 2025 4.0 I created this as a Virtual Machine at my Organization and used it for years to be able to remote in from my computer and phone. As an IT Administrator this was super useful so I could monitor on-site equipment, run commands, etc. I've only stopped using it because my new Router has a built-in VPN connection App so I no longer needed OpenVPN, but I'd suggest it to anyone wanting one. Pros It's a Linux Server that you setup and then you can remote into your things from off-site. It's Open Source and free to use. Cons Nothing I can think of. Their documentation was sound enough I could follow along to set it up myself. Just don't expect expert support on free solutions, that's the trade off for getting things free. Over months of daily use I do not remember a dropped session I could blame on the client. I have not administered the server, so I cannot speak to installation, licensing, or how it holds up under load. Pros I use the client side only. I imported the profile once, and after that connecting takes one click. The connection holds through a full workday, and I have not had to restart the app in the middle of a call. The speed drop is small enough that video calls and large downloads go through the tunnel without me noticing it is there. The same profile works on my laptop and my phone, so I am not maintaining two setups. Cons First-time setup is on you to work out. The client wants a profile file and a couple of system permissions, and without instructions from whoever runs the server you will be guessing. On the phone I open the app to switch profiles instead of doing it from system settings. Neither of those cost me more than a few minutes, and nothing about the connection itself has bothered me. March 26, 2025 3.0 Overall, I would say it's a reliable VPN resource, flexible and rather straightforward. However there are some things that could be improved in my opinion, such as working with larger enterprises. If you have a bigger business you may want to consider a different option with more enterprise centered motivations. Pros What i liked most about Access Server, was the user friendly interface. It's simple yet intuitive dashboard sets it off against other products. Also, for a medium sized business this would be a excellent reasonably priced VPN. Cons The trait that I disliked the most about Access Server was, for larger institutions it can get quite complex when it comes to setup and maintenances. I would say it's perfect for small and medium sized businesses, but you should find a different option for larger institution's. No other VPN service even comes close to the performance of OpenVPN. Pros Learning how to use the VPN is easier since the interface is very user friendly. It provides a secured workspace without compromising the Internet speed and device performance. it provides a stable server network and updates rarely cause any disruption in the service. Contacting customer support is also easy in the rare times that there are issues. Cons I like how Open VPN works. There are just rare instances that when updates are available, it stops working but once the update is completed, everything will be back to normal. The system allows for many concurrent connections and performs well. Cons The set up and implementation of the server was difficult at first. It took a bit of tries to have it working properly. Pros Easy to setup point to point tunnels from other openvpn routers to other openvpn routers, cross platform compatibility with apple, windows, android, and linux devices, tons of support and the gui is very simple for windows users to use as along as they can remember to open it in the right hand corner of the tray and click connect first before trying to open other network resources like remote desktop or windows file sharing. Cons some of the windows 10 system had a bug where you had to right click and run as administrator for security issues to get the software's TAP adapter to successfully load so you could connect.
