Also enough documentation is available online Cons Does not integrate well with existing company accounts and user management was quite manual. Over months of daily use I do not remember a dropped session I could blame on the client. I have not administered the server, so I cannot speak to installation, licensing, or how it holds up under load. Pros I use the client side only. I imported the profile once, and after that connecting takes one click. The connection holds through a full workday, and I have not had to restart the app in the middle of a call. The speed drop is small enough that video calls and large downloads go through the tunnel without me noticing it is there. The same profile works on my laptop and my phone, so I am not maintaining two setups. Cons First-time setup is on you to work out. The client wants a profile file and a couple of system permissions, and without instructions from whoever runs the server you will be guessing. On the phone I open the app to switch profiles instead of doing it from system settings. Neither of those cost me more than a few minutes, and nothing about the connection itself has bothered me. No learning curve present and was very easy to update Cons Maybe slightly outdated UI but overall not bad. Also maybe lacking a few features when considered multiple networks. As an IT Administrator this was super useful so I could monitor on-site equipment, run commands, etc. I've only stopped using it because my new Router has a built-in VPN connection App so I no longer needed OpenVPN, but I'd suggest it to anyone wanting one. Pros It's a Linux Server that you setup and then you can remote into your things from off-site. It's Open Source and free to use. Cons Nothing I can think of. Their documentation was sound enough I could follow along to set it up myself. Just don't expect expert support on free solutions, that's the trade off for getting things free. However there are some things that could be improved in my opinion, such as working with larger enterprises. If you have a bigger business you may want to consider a different option with more enterprise centered motivations. Pros What i liked most about Access Server, was the user friendly interface. It's simple yet intuitive dashboard sets it off against other products. Also, for a medium sized business this would be a excellent reasonably priced VPN. Cons The trait that I disliked the most about Access Server was, for larger institutions it can get quite complex when it comes to setup and maintenances. I would say it's perfect for small and medium sized businesses, but you should find a different option for larger institution's. Review Source Joseph M. No other VPN service even comes close to the performance of OpenVPN. Pros Learning how to use the VPN is easier since the interface is very user friendly. It provides a secured workspace without compromising the Internet speed and device performance. it provides a stable server network and updates rarely cause any disruption in the service. Contacting customer support is also easy in the rare times that there are issues. Cons I like how Open VPN works. The system allows for many concurrent connections and performs well. Cons The set up and implementation of the server was difficult at first. It took a bit of tries to have it working properly. Head of IT Used the software for: 3-5 years ### "Probably my favourite enterprise VPN solition" October 24, 2024 5.0 I first used OpenVPN at a company in 2021, I enjoyed managing it so much and found it so easy to use yet fit for purpose and importantly, secure, that I've implemented it at all 4 companies I have worked at since then, including my current one now. From how easy it is to get started, how customisable it is, how reliable and robust it is, how fair priced it is to how good the support team are I keep going back to it for a reason. Pros Other than offering a free plan, I love how quickly and user friendly it is to get started with the setup. From signing up to downloading and installing the appliance the entire thing can be done and up and running in basic form in around 20/30 minutes. Cons Purely because I am struggling to think of anything else the Azure SAML SSO is a bit clunky. It requires the user to sign in via a web browser, which is usual, but then there's a lingering tab which is supposed to automatically close after 5 seconds but often doesn't, or there is a message within the OpenVPN app that says an error occurred and prompts the user to retry but it doesn't actually fail, it works. But these are minuscule issues that don't stop us from using the app or impact performance. Pros OpenVPN is completely free, has a good support community online (has a big user base which helps tremendously for any opensource software) and is easy to implement for both Windows and Linux environment. Cons Has speed limitations (due to protocol being used) so it cannot be used for high bandwidth scenarios. Key distribution is a problem too like with many other solutions out there. If you want to run your own VPN then this is the software that you need. Pros I've been using OpenVPN for longer than I can remember, it's a rock-solid VPN platform on which you can create your own VPN configuration on. I use it to create a VPN within our company network, and it was extremely easy to set up. Cons I've racked my brain, but OpenVPN has been flawless for me. I haven't encountered any bugs or downsides since I've used it. Pros Easy to setup point to point tunnels from other openvpn routers to other openvpn routers, cross platform compatibility with apple, windows, android, and linux devices, tons of support and the gui is very simple for windows users to use as along as they can remember to open it in the right hand corner of the tray and click connect first before trying to open other network resources like remote desktop or windows file sharing. Cons some of the windows 10 system had a bug where you had to right click and run as administrator for security issues to get the software's TAP adapter to successfully load so you could connect. Pros We were having issues with the manufacturer provided VPN client, but once we switched to using the OpenVPN client we have had very little issues Cons We do not have many options, but at least it takes a config file from our provider which makes it easier to use the options. Pros Easy enough for most users to understand how to set up. Pretty secure. Able to use in most settings. Cons Users without a stronger technical background will find managing the software difficult. Can be even more complicated in enterprise environments. In event of reconfiguration, a user of stronger technical background is needed.
