### "Great Open Source VPN server"

September 23, 2025

4.0

I created this as a Virtual Machine at my Organization and used it for years to be able to remote in from my computer and phone. As an IT Administrator this was super useful so I could monitor on-site equipment, run commands, etc. I've only stopped using it because my new Router has a built-in VPN connection App so I no longer needed OpenVPN, but I'd suggest it to anyone wanting one.

Pros

It's a Linux Server that you setup and then you can remote into your things from off-site. It's Open Source and free to use.

Cons

Nothing I can think of. Their documentation was sound enough I could follow along to set it up myself. Just don't expect expert support on free solutions, that's the trade off for getting things free.

Appreciate this! Access Server is completely free to use up to 2 connections, you got it. And glad to hear documentation works well. Our support team is more than willing to help, btw, even those on our free tier. :)

### "Access Server, and it's pro's and cons."

March 26, 2025

3.0

Overall, I would say it's a reliable VPN resource, flexible and rather straightforward. However there are some things that could be improved in my opinion, such as working with larger enterprises. If you have a bigger business you may want to consider a different option with more enterprise centered motivations.

Pros

What i liked most about Access Server, was the user friendly interface. It's simple yet intuitive dashboard sets it off against other products. Also, for a medium sized business this would be a excellent reasonably priced VPN.

Cons

The trait that I disliked the most about Access Server was, for larger institutions it can get quite complex when it comes to setup and maintenances. I would say it's perfect for small and medium sized businesses, but you should find a different option for larger institution's.

Pros

Easy to use. Automatically keeps you logged in so you dont have to log in each time you need to use systems

Cons

When the VPN is down or logs you out, the access needed for certain systems we use does not allow us to log in at all and get access by our IT

### "Best VPN service you can get"

October 4, 2025

5.0

It is the best VPN service that I have used so far. No other VPN service even comes close to the performance of OpenVPN.

Pros

Learning how to use the VPN is easier since the interface is very user friendly. It provides a secured workspace without compromising the Internet speed and device performance. it provides a stable server network and updates rarely cause any disruption in the service. Contacting customer support is also easy in the rare times that there are issues.

Cons

I like how Open VPN works. There are just rare instances that when updates are available, it stops working but once the update is completed, everything will be back to normal.

### "OpenVpn server review"

May 8, 2025

5.0

Pros

Openvpn works pretty well accross a number of platforms, and lets me connect to my network. The system allows for many concurrent connections and performs well.

Cons

The set up and implementation of the server was difficult at first. It took a bit of tries to have it working properly. Once properly configured it was easier to manage however.

I love it one of the best cyber security products ever.

### "Probably my favourite enterprise VPN solition"

October 17, 2024

5.0

I first used OpenVPN at a company in 2021, I enjoyed managing it so much and found it so easy to use yet fit for purpose and importantly, secure, that I've implemented it at all 4 companies I have worked at since then, including my current one now. From how easy it is to get started, how customisable it is, how reliable and robust it is, how fair priced it is to how good the support team are I keep going back to it for a reason.

Pros

Other than offering a free plan, I love how quickly and user friendly it is to get started with the setup. From signing up to downloading and installing the appliance the entire thing can be done and up and running in basic form in around 20/30 minutes.

Cons

Purely because I am struggling to think of anything else the Azure SAML SSO is a bit clunky. It requires the user to sign in via a web browser, which is usual, but then there's a lingering tab which is supposed to automatically close after 5 seconds but often doesn't, or there is a message within the OpenVPN app that says an error occurred and prompts the user to retry but it doesn't actually fail, it works. But these are minuscule issues that don't stop us from using the app or impact performance.

### "OpenVPN is simple and easy to use VPN"

November 18, 2023

5.0

Overall, the performance is great and it's a good value for many.

Pros

It's reliable and easy to use, the option to work with desktop and web apps is great, you don't spend a lot of time connecting, and the performance overall is very stable using the VPN.

Cons

I encountered some bugs where you can't access the VPN, and you need to restart in order to successfully connect.

### "Open to making the best VPN client out there"

May 15, 2022

4.0

Pros

OpenVPN has a user-friendly interface, that is easy to navigate. In just a few minutes, anyone can get started with setting up a virtual private network even without much computer skills, because it is compatible with various operating systems such as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android. Most importantly, it is open-source, meaning that it has the largest amount of documentation and tutorials online if you are ever facing troubles.

Cons

The configuration can become tedious if you are not used to networking lingo and words, once it's set up though, you can set it and forget it. In my opinion, some default settings should be in place for newer users that aren't experienced. Such as disabling one's internet connection if the VPN fails to work (kill switch).

### "Very good VPN"

September 22, 2023

5.0

It has been good!

Pros

We use this VPN on a daily basis to protect our service departments information .. it works very well.

Cons

It can be slow dependent on where you are accessing it from.. I have " mid-tier " internet at my home, so when utilizing a VPN that already " slows " your speeds, combining it with average internet is definitly a snail race.. But better safe than sorry!

### "An Standard in VPNs World!"

September 29, 2022

4.0

I suggest everyone to have it in their devices because sometimes VPN Providers' apps get some issues so you have go through a manual way and it's OpenVPN application itself. Unfortunately the developers don't support the OpenVPN application so much, despite that the OpenVPN protocol is an standard these days!

Pros

Almost every VPN provider has OpenVPN protocol and most of them provide both TCP and UDP. It's fast, reliable and secure. The application is easy to use.

Cons

Unfortunately it's been a long time that the OpenVPN application is the same as before, there hasn't been much changes in it. The options isn't much in it. The proxy only supports HTTP/S. There isn't Always-On-VPN option in android version of the application.

### "Very secure way to connect to enterprise network"

September 23, 2020

5.0

We use OpenVPN to let our employees connect with their laptop to the network at the office.

Pros

Open source, using state-of-the-art security protocols to connect to a remote network. Regular updates to stay up to date with the latest version of the different security blocks.

Cons

Not always easy to troubleshoot connection problems because error messages sometimes don't give a clue of what configuration setting is wrong.

Pros

1-There are too many solutions for one requirement. Cloud services, virtual appliance, and software packages. 2-very reliable and almost bug-free software. 3-community edition is free

Cons

1-Community edition setup is really difficult and only a professional can install it.

### "Secure and easy to use"

July 15, 2021

5.0

Overall, OpenVPN Access Server is easy to use, easy to set up. They have a nice app for all the platforms. It does the job well for our main use case which is to limit access to our APIs to only those who are connected to the VPN.

Pros

Simple user interface. Easy to set up and connect OpenVPN Access Server to enable two-factor authentication with Google Authenticator. The client-side is also intuitive with apps for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and for the desktop (windows and mac).

Cons

Can sometimes be hard to debug connection errors. On the client-side, if the connection error fails because of a password or expiration or wrong password, the error message does not reflect this. This could possibly be for security protection, but it can be a bit confusing to the end user.

### "Utilitarian VPN server"

September 14, 2018

4.0

Pros

Based off the open sourced free version it tends to have updates for security problems fixed very quickly when they occur. Once configured it works smoothly. The LDAP integration for the business version is pretty slick

Cons

Configuration can be tricky depending on your certificate setups and your installation (specifically on windows, had some files in the wrong directory and in the wrong format initially). Updates are frequent which is good but aren't clandestine as I would expect them to be.

### "Reliable and lightweight VPN Server"

April 26, 2019

5.0

I use it now to access some customers and solve many different problems, but in the past I have configured a VPN Server on a virtual machine for my graduation so others could access it and use the system I was developing there. It was very good in my opinion!

Pros

Its very easy, although very configurable, to setup a VPN Server with OpenVPN. There is a large amount of tutorials all over the internet regarding this, which make it very easy to get up and running. The errors that you may find along the road are detailed enough for you to search for help.

Cons

The way it works, sometimes, can cause problems with OpenVPN Clients when users have more than one VPN Client installed on their machine (like Global Protect). In consulting world the need to have more than one VPN installed on the same machine is very common, so not everybody is aware that OpenVPN can interfere with other VPN clients.

### "One of the best tools for small businesses"

August 20, 2018

4.0

Pros

OpenVPN is in my opinion one of the best option you have to set up a VPN for your employess/customers, because they can easily access your network with both their computers and their mobile phones without having to know much about how the VPN works.

Cons

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to apply some restriction to the VPN users like for example limit duration or number of accesses per day/week.

### "Fast work-from-home connection"

August 22, 2019

5.0

Pros

It is fast. Many VPNs I have used in the past have provided a spotty connection into the company network, but this has been fast and seamless. I have run code to read and write on the network drives and it is almost as fast as doing it while connected directly to the system.

Cons

This really is a great software, but it may take up a little more filespace than other VPNs

### "Best free VPN software in the market"

We use it daily and we haven't switched since around 2 years ago. We are happy with the tool and for what we need it

Pros

It's very easy to setup specially for mac users. You just have to download the file with the configuration and select it, that's it. Very easy for everyone

Cons

After a couple of hours using the VPN it would randomly disconnect. You have to completely turn off your wifi and the VPN and then turn them on again.
