“It isn’t over-designed for marketing campaigns, but it does what it promises: your emails get sent, you can monitor them, scale up, and troubleshoot issues with good tools. If you’re running a SaaS product or need to send reliable notifications/orders/alerts etc, Mailgun performs very well. But if you’re looking for low-effort visual campaign building or non-technical workflows, you might find it a bit too “bare metal” compared to some marketing-oriented platforms.“

### "Developer friendly transactional email service"

April 2, 2022

5.0

We are solving transactional email needs for a startup I work as a CTO, does a great job there despite pricing not being flexible enough.

Pros

Mailgun is a service that was created by developers for developers. Their top-tier documentation and code is self-explanatory and should present no issues to integrate in just a few minutes. The service itself is reliable and has the latest bleeding edge features. Their customer support is very effective and can get issues solved promptly.

Cons

Mailgun's pricing has only gotten pricier and pricier with time. They are not even able to provide discounts that are not in their scheme and it is up to you to simply accept that when there are many competitors on this market. The service itself is very robust but this inconvenient made me think about other options after some above-base level features were needed.

Reason for choosing Mailgun

Documentation looked robust and easy to work with.

### "Mailgun – Powerful, Flexible, but Not for the Uninitiated"

November 12, 2025

5.0

Mailgun excels as an enterprise‑grade email delivery platform. If your team is comfortable with APIs and you need granular control over routing, suppression, and analytics, it delivers on performance and reliability. However, for small businesses or teams without dedicated developers, the learning curve and pricing model can feel restrictive. It’s best suited when you’re already committed to building custom email workflows rather than relying on a “set‑and‑forget” solution.

Pros

Robust API & Documentation: The RESTful endpoints are well‑structured and the SDKs (Python, Ruby, Node.js, etc.) make integration painless once you’ve read the docs. Advanced Email Analytics: Real‑time dashboards for delivery, bounce, spam complaints, and click rates give a clear picture of campaign health. Flexible Domain & Account Management: You can add multiple sending domains, set up sub‑domains for separate projects, and manage DNS records through the UI or API effortlessly.à Strong Security Controls: Two‑factor authentication, IP whitelisting, and granular role‑based access keep your credentials safe.

Cons

Steep Learning Curve: The sheer breadth of options (dedicated IPs, suppression lists, custom routing) can overwhelm newcomers; the UI feels more like a developer console than a user‑friendly dashboard. Pricing Complexity: While free tier is generous for low volume, the cost structure (per‑sent + per‑recipient, dedicated IP fees, and extra features) quickly adds up, making it hard to predict expenses without careful budgeting. Limited Built‑in Email Templates: Unlike some competitors, Mailgun doesn’t offer a visual template editor; you need to craft HTML yourself or use third‑party tools.

I moved from Amazon SES to Mailgun primarily because of the need for more advanced routing, analytics, and developer‑friendly tooling that our growing product demanded.

How to overall good experience with mailgun would highly recommend it super helpful. I would definitely refer my friends and colleagues.

Pros

I really enjoyed the camp email templates security on. It was super helpful very little bugs and issues very well worth the value of the cost.

Cons

Had a good experience if I had to pick a couple things I disliked about mail gun it would be the learning curve and email management was really confusing

### "An amazing service"

Great. Actually more than great. Spectacular. I have never used an easier to setup and higher quality service.

Pros

It’s ever easy to setup and good pricing. I have never ever encountered an issue. It’s as good as it gets.

Cons

Nothing honestly it’s great. I have never encountered anything that made me look for another alternative.

### "Thank you for keeping it simple"

November 12, 2025

5.0

Again, I have nothing but positive words to say about your business. Keep it simple going forward, as you have thus far, and you have one guaranteed customer at least.

Pros

It is well documented and easy to work with, which, as a developer, means quite a lot. It gives me the options, to keep my mail communication within the EU borders, which is key in my field working with EU businesses. Support has been superb thus far, those few occasions needed.

Cons

Yet to find any cons. It covers my needs perfectly. I am able to relay mails from self-hosted mail servers, along with using the API for my applications. Literally all I need personally, and these is covered nicely.

Couldn't keep our mails within EU borders (at that time at least). Their portal was clumsy. As I recall their API was fine and easy to work with too, but those other pointers made us do the switch.

### "Love their API backward compatibility"

October 17, 2025

5.0

I’m highly satisfied and don’t mind paying more for a flexible plan with, for example, modular add-on services.

Pros

They provide backward compatibility with their old API to reduce downtime during upgrades, especially for legacy systems where upgrading to the latest library or source code is not feasible.

Cons

The log retention period is very limited. Does not support multiple sub accounts with separate billing and separate payment methods.

### "Mailgun is best in mass email delivery"

October 15, 2025

5.0

Our experience has been fantastic. We have recommended them to many clients and friends because of the ease of use, reasonable costs, and much better quality of service than competitors.

Pros

Mailgun was very quick to setup and has continued to serve our mass emailing needs across many websites for several years running. The cost is great, quality of service and deliverability is great.

Cons

I don't know that we experienced any downsides with Mailgun. Our clients have not complained about it, we have not had to worry about it. Their documentation has been easy to follow. I really don't see a downside.

### "Mailgun - Works great with your app"

September 16, 2025

5.0

Very easy to use, and allows me to provide login verification, password retrieval, etc for the users of the site.

Pros

It was very easy to integrate with my online platform (Django / HTMX stack), and provided a dashboard for checking problems as well as sandbox for testing.

Cons

Not had any issues at all that I can complain about, perhaps they could add some extra example code but I didn't need any myself.

### "Solid service to ensure reliable email delivery"

June 9, 2025

5.0

It has been a pretty positive service. I ran into some issues with when switched login with Sinch, but other than that we have reliable mail delivery and some tools to analyze issues.

Pros

In a world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to have business email arrive in someone's inbox, Mailgun has been a great go-to for smaller web applications we've built on the WordPress platform. It is fairly easy to set up if you have experience with DNS, and pretty good instruction if you are not. There are a lot of tools to help you understand delivery, track bounces and analyze issues with your email.

Cons

Mailgun could use a wizard like interface for setting up a domain. Also it is a bit expensive if you are planning really large scale email delivery. The trade-off of course is that the cheaper services are not as easy to set up as Mailgun.

### "Great and reliable"

September 25, 2023

5.0

We use Mailgun for a while now and we really like it.Currently we're using it as a standard for all our transactional mailings on new projects. Also, when we experienced difficulties and reached out to the support, we've been amazed about their qualified response that helped us not only solving the problem (mail deliverability) but also to improve the quality of our emails.

Pros

\+ API mailing+ driver for laravel+ triggers / webhooks+ price/value+ easy setup and integration+ easy deployment on new domains+ fixed IP address if needed+ good support and best practise+ reliable

Cons

\- logs can not be exported- bad UI for mobile admin access- sometime uses burnt-out IP addresses

### "Great Software Gone Greedy"

March 25, 2021

4.0

Outside of them changing their payment tier / plan system I haven't had any issue with Mailgun. I always found their customer service great and the product itself to be fantastic and does exactly what it's supposed to. I just really wish they brought back the routing feature to the free tier.

Pros

Great API, Super easy to integrate into various types of website / webapp setups. I previously used Mailgun for a variety of different integrations and never had any issues. Complete frictionless integration from beginning to end.

Cons

I dislike that the features we used to get for free are now hidden behind a paywall. Features such as routing emails I find to be rudimentary and were previously built into the free / pay as you go tier. Now it is locked behind the $35 dollar tier. This is a pain for small businesses that want to accept a few emails from a professional email with their own domain. Now to unlock that feature they must over commit to a tier with an allowance of 10k plus emails a month. This I feel has squeezed many small businesses out of using their service and it has definately moved me from recommending & using them in future as I would have previously for my smaller clients.

Pros

Cons

### "Mailgun Review"

January 13, 2023

5.0

All of our company's websites utilize Mailgun for email marketing purposes. We've even implemented Mailgun for our customers and strongly suggest it. Email delivery problems have been solved thanks to Mailgun. There is no need for us to use the e-mail server provided by \[our hosting server\]. Email delivery was a major problem for some of our customers who were hosted with well-known shared hosting providers like GoDaddy, Bluehost, etc. One of Mailgun's best features is that messages can be monitored in real-time, and if they fail to send for any reason, the specific cause is shown in the log.

Pros

Sending an email to someone takes no time at all, and you can even set up a queue for thousands of messages. If you need to contact a large group of people with one message, this is a great feature to have (e.g., newsletter subscribers, marketing emails to clients, etc.). With its help, your emails are more likely to reach their intended recipients and are less likely to end up in the spam or junk folders. The Mailgun reports and logs feature is excellent. If an email couldn't be delivered successfully, what are the exact reasons why? Sometimes, if we can determine the cause, we can work to fix the problem.

Cons

The WordPress plugin for Mailgun could use some work. It needs to have more options made available to users. Our email volume isn't particularly large, but we'd still like to have a dedicated IP address for our outgoing mail. A dedicated IP's high price tag is unjustifiable. fixing the problems that have arisen with sending emails to Hotmail or Outlook.com. Deliveries are made, but the junk/spam folder is where most emails end up.

### "Consider Mailgun if you want to increase your email delivery rates"

November 30, 2022

4.0

Overall it's a great tool to start with if you are a startup doing an initial setup for transactional emails. Just keep an eye on pricing as you scale as we migrated to AWS SES once we started hitting like 50k emails per month because it was cheaper than Mailgun.

Pros

The integration is smooth, and it's very easy to get started. I felt Mailgun has the best success rates. It keeps giving good suggestions with reporting dashboard to improve the delivery rates.

Cons

They had changed the pricing plans and removed the free plan, so if you are starting, it's not free anymore. It just has a free trial of 90 days and after that, you need to upgrade the plan. Customer support can be improved as well. I had one issue with my account that got sorted out in about two weeks.

### "Suitable for optimizing email marketing campaigns"

January 22, 2023

5.0

Mailgun gave us fresh ideas for planning our email marketing campaigns and the effect of maximizing their reach. Their analysis helped us understand our target sample, which enabled us to coordinate campaigns better.

Pros

Mailgun's many features make email marketing easy to plan and implement. We can import contacts and create target group lists. Mailgun's custom templates allow you to design unique campaigns and save them as drafts. It's incredible how the real-time notifications and statistics show how actively customers engage in the campaign. My team and I love that future campaigns can use the same model. It's also good that you can hide and reorganize dashboard items.

Cons

I have no major technical problems. Mailgun improves email workflows for organizations large and small, the creators of Mailgun provide various videos and how-to materials that help develop our skills, and the support staff is always available.

Haven't had a complaint yet.

Pros

Configuring email is like conjuring drunk dragons with black magic: most of the time it only works so-so and any tiny mistake gets you burned. Mailgun has very good documentation on setting up your domain and configuring things so that your reputation is great and does not suffer. The REST API makes dealing with events a pleasure and the dashboard gives you great insight into where your mails are going to or coming from and why your audience is behaving the way it is.

Cons

There's not much not to like. The price is great (mostly free) and the documentation and reliability are 100%.

Pros

With 10.000 free emails/month is a super deal for small business. Besides, Mailgun is truly flexible for developers with Webhook Support, API support, SMTP user manager, Email Template Builder.

Cons
