Pros Mailgun is a service that was created by developers for developers. Their top-tier documentation and code is self-explanatory and should present no issues to integrate in just a few minutes. The service itself is reliable and has the latest bleeding edge features. Their customer support is very effective and can get issues solved promptly. Cons Mailgun's pricing has only gotten pricier and pricier with time. They are not even able to provide discounts that are not in their scheme and it is up to you to simply accept that when there are many competitors on this market. The service itself is very robust but this inconvenient made me think about other options after some above-base level features were needed. CEO Telecommunications Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Disastrous service — avoid at all costs" September 2, 2025 1.0 After years of using Mailgun for legitimate transactional emails only, they suddenly disabled my account without warning because of a flawed automated system. This caused immediate chaos for my SaaS, as transactional emails are mission-critical. I switched providers within 24 hours but kept communicating with Mailgun support out how long they would take to restore the service. It took them 8 days before reactivation. Completely unacceptable. No serious SaaS can rely on a provider that pulls the plug without notice. The new service is superior in every aspect: deliverability, UI, and reporting. MThanks to Mailgun for pushing me to move. Pros The only good thing was being grandfathered into their retired Flex plan, but even that couldn’t make up for their disastrous service. Cons Their automated system falsely flagged my SaaS, disabling all transactional emails without warning. Support was extremely slow making Mailgun completely unreliable for any business. Keep it simple going forward, as you have thus far, and you have one guaranteed customer at least. Pros It is well documented and easy to work with, which, as a developer, means quite a lot. It gives me the options, to keep my mail communication within the EU borders, which is key in my field working with EU businesses. Support has been superb thus far, those few occasions needed. Cons Yet to find any cons. It covers my needs perfectly. I am able to relay mails from self-hosted mail servers, along with using the API for my applications. Pricing is still very affordable, and service beats competitors that we're recommending clients migrate to Mailgun from. Pros Mailgun was very affordable to get started (they have a free tier) and are scaling well with over 20 active clients using our account for SMTP. Cons We haven't experienced any downsides or complications that were due to Mailgun. Clients don't complain about it, so we're content. I ran into some issues with when switched login with Sinch, but other than that we have reliable mail delivery and some tools to analyze issues. Pros In a world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to have business email arrive in someone's inbox, Mailgun has been a great go-to for smaller web applications we've built on the WordPress platform. It is fairly easy to set up if you have experience with DNS, and pretty good instruction if you are not. There are a lot of tools to help you understand delivery, track bounces and analyze issues with your email. Cons Mailgun could use a wizard like interface for setting up a domain. Also it is a bit expensive if you are planning really large scale email delivery. The trade-off of course is that the cheaper services are not as easy to set up as Mailgun. We were able to deliver tens of thousands of mails with a solid deliverability and extremely high open rates (mostly thanks to a good title). The overall experience has been good and if I had the need I'd use the tool again. Pros It has good pricing, is fairly easy to use, and is affordable price. We've achieved a very high deliverability, exceeding our expectations in that aspect. Cons Some of the user and account management interfaces were a big challenging to use and navigate. I always found their customer service great and the product itself to be fantastic and does exactly what it's supposed to. I just really wish they brought back the routing feature to the free tier. Pros Great API, Super easy to integrate into various types of website / webapp setups. I previously used Mailgun for a variety of different integrations and never had any issues. Complete frictionless integration from beginning to end. Cons I dislike that the features we used to get for free are now hidden behind a paywall. Features such as routing emails I find to be rudimentary and were previously built into the free / pay as you go tier. Now it is locked behind the $35 dollar tier. This is a pain for small businesses that want to accept a few emails from a professional email with their own domain. Now to unlock that feature they must over commit to a tier with an allowance of 10k plus emails a month. This I feel has squeezed many small businesses out of using their service and it has definately moved me from recommending & using them in future as I would have previously for my smaller clients. Just keep an eye on pricing as you scale as we migrated to AWS SES once we started hitting like 50k emails per month because it was cheaper than Mailgun. Pros The integration is smooth, and it's very easy to get started. I felt Mailgun has the best success rates. It keeps giving good suggestions with reporting dashboard to improve the delivery rates. Cons They had changed the pricing plans and removed the free plan, so if you are starting, it's not free anymore. It just has a free trial of 90 days and after that, you need to upgrade the plan. Customer support can be improved as well. I had one issue with my account that got sorted out in about two weeks. No explanation or response from Mailgun. After many unsuccessful attempts to log in to our Mailgun account, we got a popup saying "We are migrating some systems" -- no warning of this in beforehand either. Email is a very critical part of our business. We assumed Mailgun would be a reliable partner — apparently not. Please stay away from Mailgun. With their free tier covering the first 10,000 emails, it's a free solution to a prominent issue: emails getting stuck in email filters or not making it at all. Mailgun is easy to sign up for and easy to integrate into your site, especially if you are using WordPress. Absolutely love the mail logs too - that's come in quite handy on many an occasion. Cons As a web developer, I understand the need and value of Mailgun. It can be difficult for new users to understand this though. The web interface is clean and provides you with the information you need right on the landing page. Integrates easy with many services and plugins exist for many platforms (eg Wordpress). API is well documented. Cons While the Free tier of 10,000 emails a month is class leading, when you begin entering the paid tiers there are much cheaper alternatives available. April 30, 2019 5.0 Overall great value for the free tier, 10.000 emails for free plus great deliverability and integration, great for Wordpress users. Pros When developing a custom PHP app or using Wordpress you often face the issue of your notifications and customer emails getting stuck or not passing the mails filters. This is a big issue, when for example you are sending out important information like an order confirmation or a ticket for your event and your users are not getting your emails or they are arriving into their SPAM folder. Mailgun has proved superb on improving email deliverability and their logs are super helpful as well, you can track what went wrong if anything. Their interface is easy to use and to the point. Moreover, their free tier gives you 10.000 emails for use, for free. Something great for companies doing product research, I found their API easy to use and easy to integrate with my projects, Wordpress being the easiest: a plugin + an API key/secret. Regarding Wordpress I found Mailgun the best amongst options tried for email deliverability. Cons Cost of the paid tiers is pricey if you compare with the alternatives. Everything in Mailgun goes through their API, so if you need a Full UI alongside the API this might not be the best choice.
