### "Gitlab is the market leader in SaaS version control"

December 27, 2025

4.0

In my opinion, Gitlab is the market leader in SaaS version control. Its core features are well built, and the company provides great transparency to any issues. Support is accessible. The pricing is sensibly tiered. Options exist for self hosting as well as fully managed.

Pros

Gitlab provides a straightforward interface and hosted version of git. It is priced competitively, and it is easy to configure access and control settings for an organisation.

Cons

Gitlab appear to invest quite a lot of development time into features that I would be surprised were widely in use. Building a code editor beyond basic notepad functionality seems excessive, and the lean into AI features has ultimately made the product worse.

Reason for choosing GitLab

Superior pricing structure and feature set

### "Experience with gitlab"

June 15, 2025

5.0

Overall, my experience with GitLab has been great. I’ve been using it since the beginning of my career, and it’s always felt reliable and developer-friendly. While there isn’t a huge difference between GitLab and GitHub feature-wise, GitLab really shines when working within a closed group or an organization. The built-in CI/CD, project management tools, and permission handling make it an excellent choice for team-based workflows. That said, one challenge I’ve faced—especially from a startup perspective—is that some essential features are limited in the free version. For instance, group member limits and restrictions around branch protection rules can become a bottleneck when you're trying to scale a small team with good practices. It would definitely help if GitLab offered a bit more flexibility in its free tier for early-stage teams. Still, despite these limitations, GitLab remains a strong, all-in-one DevOps platform that I’ve enjoyed working with.

Pros

I've been using GitLab since the start of my career, and honestly, it's just so good. While there isn’t a huge difference between GitLab and GitHub in terms of core functionality, GitLab really stands out when you're working within a closed group or using it in an organization. The built-in CI/CD, issue tracking, and permission controls make it incredibly smooth for team collaboration and managing private repositories efficiently. For internal projects and streamlined workflows, GitLab has been my go-to

Cons

While GitLab offers a lot of great features, one thing that can be limiting—especially for startups—is that many essential features are locked behind the paid tiers. For example, creating a group and being able to add only a few members in the free version feels a bit restrictive when you're trying to scale a small team. Similarly, features like advanced branch protection rules, which are quite important for maintaining code quality and workflows, aren't fully available in the free plan. It would be great if GitLab could offer more flexibility for early-stage teams who rely on these core features to build solid development practices.

### " A single platform to code and collaboration."

December 26, 2025

4.0

GitLab has assisted us in centralizing code, issues, and pipelines related to campaign-related tech work, which has made the process of collaboration smoother between sales and engineering.

Pros

I prefer to see issues, code and pipelines intertwined to make me see progress and place realistic expectations on clients.

Cons

I hate the fact that the interface might become heavy and when the projects and pipelines are increased, the performance is dropped a bit.

### "Best git provider for most commercial use cases"

February 22, 2025

5.0

Pros

Multiple edition that can fit your project/company needs (e.g. free SaaS edition, self-hosted community edition, Enterprise). Great developer ergonomics, with plenty of customisations that fulfill all complex development/enterprise requirements.

Cons

Not as good for community features (e.g. public open-source projects, developer profile) compared to Github, which also gets a bit more publicity.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing GitLab

Has the right mix of features and investor ergonomics, while priced reasonably. Also very flexible with community edition deployments.

Switched to Gitlab for internal projects, as well as publishing some open source projects from our internal repos. We use a mix of self-hosted Gitlab Community Edition, and the enterprise edition for client facing / core workflows.

### "An improvement over GitHub "

October 8, 2025

4.0

Overall it is a very decent code repository system and it's neater repos make organisation and user roles much easier to manage and flexible when compare to competitors

Pros

The gitlab pipelines worked incredibly well and it was very clear where failures were happening. It was also very dynamic, allowing for complex workflows to be designed and run.

Cons

The documentation I found was often lacking in the workflows space, which made using complex systems tricky to get used to. Luckily there is a large community online, but the docs could be improved.

### "Great tool to manage full application from code to deployment"

May 1, 2025

5.0

A bit of learning curve at the beginning but it's mostly because it's more than what we used to have (just source control)

Pros

fully compatible with what we know already in git. Has so many nice features for pipeline, Continuous integration, environment variables etc.

Cons

Maybe sometimes it's not intuitive to find things like variables (under settings , then CI CD), but it's ok really

A more comprehensive software planning suite than the rest, it has more features which work for bigger teams which have more than one project. The ability to create nested groups for teams really helps

Cons

Not much, it can be a bit heavy to run at times in browser and there is no official mobile app which can be annoyying

### "GitLab is perfect for company code and can even be hosted locally"

April 30, 2025

5.0

They continue to innovate and I'm happy with the company. I'm glad they are competing with GitHub so we have more than one good solution.

Pros

I like that GitLab is not as large as Microsoft who recently acquired GitHub. They also from the beginning were focused more on the private git code for companies.

Cons

Since they focus on the company more than the open source it means that more open source is hosted on GitHub and that means I need to know two platforms since we use OSS as well.

Pros

### "Good product, average support"

December 24, 2025

3.0

We still use GitLab to this date and have nothing to fault, as long as nothing goes wrong during this time.

Pros

Having still used GitLab for over a few years now, we have found it to still be very useful for our development and storage purposes. The price is a little more acceptable now that competitors have also increased their price.

Cons

The support we needed for some bugs with incorrectly notified false-positives and other issues were not quickly resolved and left our development team twiddling their fingers.

It is a software that facilitates the entire open-source process, providing an opportunity for interaction for people with minimal knowledge. However, with GitLab, you can learn more.

### "Easy to use version control from the get-go"

June 6, 2025

5.0

It is a platform that facilitates version control as an alternative to other vendors and it is easy to use from the command line and other tools from the get-go.

Pros

Makes it easy for one to set up version control within a regulated environment. Pull requests are also possible. Integration with other tools is possible as it follows the protocol despite being a different vendor.

Cons

We did not encounter any issues when using this versus Github. We were concerned that there might be authentication issues via the command line but there were ultimately no issues Thankfully.
