### "Powerful toolset that are available on premise!"

September 16, 2021

5.0

I am happy with the toolset - very grateful to the gitlab community for the work done on this. It allows small startup companies to create their own instance and manage gitlab CI deployment pipelines.

Pros

I am not constrained at all by a company like GitHub or Bitbucket. It allows my team to have faith that what we are working on - remains in house. For piece of mind - without using git native.

Cons

Difficult to setup for the uninitiated linux administrator. Administration and upgrades are also difficult to do.

Reason for choosing GitLab

GitLab is totally free and can be hosted on premise.

I needed to ensure that our repositories are private and held on premise.

### "Gitlab is one of the most important components of our SDLC "

November 6, 2023

4.0

It's easy to use for developers and administrators and the service Gitlab provides is excellent.

Pros

We switched from On Premise Gitlab and using the SaaS based Gitlab is great for easy source control and over the past 3/4 years, it's become even more important part of our Software Development Lifecycle now that we are using the automated pipelines more and more.

Cons

Occasionally some of the GUI features can fail, such as auto merging, but refreshing the page and trying again it then works.

Reason for choosing GitLab

We wanted to migrate our existing gitlab projects, so moving to Gitlab SaaS at least in the short term made sense. Having said that, it then became more than just our source control, once we made more use of the pipelines and other functionality.

### "Reliable Devops platform."

January 22, 2023

4.0

We use Gitlab for code hosting , code reviewing plus for continuous integration and deployment (CICD). Gitlab makes the different engineers and developers within our team , to be able to develop software products collaboratively, without being in the same physical location.

Pros

I love how Gitlab makes security and compliance provisions available to users of this Git platform by default. This provides me and my team with the right level of control and visibility required , to protect the security integrity and architecture of software products we build using Gitlab.

Cons

With Gitlab, there is the tendency for the service to undergo downtimes once in a while. Asides from this not being the case with some other notable Git platforms, I dislike the fact that Gitlab does not give advance notice to users like myself about periods when their services will be down. Also, I need to mention the Gitlab user community, which is smaller and less active than alternative Git platforms. This contributes to a slower experience when trying to find solutions to any difficulty experienced on Gitlab , via unofficial channels like online forums and developer communities.

### "GitLab: Next gen Collaboration Tool"

November 10, 2023

5.0

Overall it is a 8.7 out of 10 experience, considering the average to be 5. It is better than some of the platforms in many terms, but till lagging some level of scalebility.

Pros

It offers an all-in-one platform that includes version control, issue tracking, continuous integration, and more. It excels at managing Git repositories, allowing for easy branching, merging, and version control. It has robust access control features, allowing administrators to manage user roles, permissions, and project visibility.

Cons

It is resource-intensive, especially for larger projects or organizations. It is hard to initially learn the tools and technologies. The UI/UX is less tempting.

The ease of GitLab in terms of collaboration and deployment made it very easy, and that is now my more liking collaboration software.

### "An excellent Source Code Tool"

May 5, 2023

5.0

Quite happy with it. Coming from a very strong technical background myself, there were the usual set of core features I was expecting, and it does those well. Plus, it allows me to have a good overview of things at a higher level (since I do know the tech stuff), without having to compromise the repository in any way. In brief, suits my needs well.

Pros

Does what one would expect from any modern code repository and does it with a great intuitive interface. This is often an overlooked requirement, which GitLab does very well. The interface is intuitive and allows the user to do their job with minimal fuss and just get on with it.

Cons

The commercial pricing tiers can be a bit on the high side, and it can add up with many users - which can be just a bit daunting for growing organizations, but it can be handled if properly budgeted. Also, at times it can be slower than expected, but it's a fairly minor annoyance in my experience.

### "Gitlab is the best"

June 17, 2022

5.0

I absolutely love this product, and it is my favorite

Pros

I would choose this over any other product because the ci-cd is amazingly easy to use and customizable. The self-hosted capabilities and easy of use of this product makes it number one!

Cons

Bugs and support sometimes take a bit to get taken care of, but the bugs are few!

Reason for choosing GitLab

Because of its ci-cd. I can have it self hosted and set up hardware on the same network easily and completely test my deployment before actually deploying my code. It's the best!

### "GitLab review"

July 12, 2023

5.0

GitLab has been an exceptional tool for me as a student, offering seamless version control, collaboration, and project management capabilities that have greatly enhanced my productivity and teamwork.

Pros

I like GitLab's user-friendly interface, easy access to code repositories, project & task management, collaborating with team members effectively, and organized workflow for group projects.

Cons

Gitlab is nice but when I first used GitLab it was very hard to know, navigate and very confusing. It will be nice if the issues' status are shown in the dashboard. Also If we wanna assign any issue with any team member, we have to go inside the issue and assign it. It will be nice if we have a quick action button every where.

### "Useful but certainly on the expensive end"

February 18, 2023

4.0

Overall, I would recommend this to those willing to pay as it is hassle free and make one's life easier. But there are certainly cheaper alternatives.

Pros

It is very user friendly and has incorporated a large number of additional features beyond git control. The wiki function is pretty useful in particular as we could draft documentation within the same space

Cons

It is very expensive compared to other git provider. Github is certainly catching up with the investments Microsoft is making on the various new features.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing GitLab

It was not really a conscious decision. We just started with GitLab and have stuck with it ever since as the whole team is familiar with it now.

### "Gitlab - Un excellent outil de gestion de code"

November 15, 2023

5.0

### "Gitlab - Honest Review"

October 12, 2023

4.0

Obviously it eases the problem of version control and on top of that it has so many features that we do not have to go for other platforms still some 3rd party integration are no that much supported and because of these and there are some easy to use and easy implement options developers go for other options for full CI/CD options.

Pros

In software development lifecycle gitlab has very integrated approach and it has built in CI/CD pipelines. And It is very user friendly even though it is for developers.

Cons

It's documentation is not that much easy to understand and even though it has so many features, new user might find himself/herself lost in getting to be aware.

### "Superb Source Code Management Software"

February 18, 2023

5.0

Overall I feel good about my decision to choose GitLab as a source code management software. We can create our repository private and public which makes things easy sometimes when we want to share some code quickly and without authentication.

Pros

I am using GitLab to manage the source of a couple of projects. Using GitLab is very easy and fast. Basic features we can use without learning but to use the advanced feature we have to learn a few things.Creating branches and merging those is very easy and fast. We can add comments same time and search the old commits using search.

Cons

I don't have any issues till now. Gitlab is just helping me very smoothly to manage my source code in a better way.

### "GitLab: Efficient and Collaborative Software Development Platform"

September 28, 2023

5.0

GitLab is a handy tool for making software. It helps keep track of changes to the project, makes it easier to test and fix problems, and even has tools for keeping the project secure. Everything is in one place, so it's easier to organize. Some people might find it a bit tricky at first, but with practice, it becomes more straightforward. Whether for big companies or small groups, GitLab is a useful friend for building software.

Pros

GitLab stands out because it's an all-in-one platform for software development. It covers everything from storing code to testing, security, and teamwork. Developers in my team work together more easily and efficiently. GitLab also supports automation and follows best practices, making it great for speeding up development and ensuring good software quality. It's user-friendly, versatile, and works well for various types of projects.

Cons

One common drawback of GitLab is its relatively steeper learning curve, especially for new users or smaller teams. The platform's extensive feature set can be overwhelming, and the complexity of its interface may require some time to become proficient.

### "The tool every software developer should use!"

October 7, 2021

5.0

In our team, we plan all our projects in Gitlab, issue by issue because it allows to give us real time status of each project, it let us define a weight for each issue so we easily can plan the group of issues per person per sprint to make sure we are not over loaded so we can achieve the goals. We also managed all the merge requests and it gives the power to the leader to verify the quality of the code from the rest of the team and give them appropiate feedback

Pros

The software is really easy to use, even if you are just starting in the industry. It helps a lot to have a vision of your projects, sprints status, team members workload and have control over the open tasks and how to get organized to get the job done.

Cons

I would like to see better documentation, maybe on youtube to learn how to use all the services that Gitlab already have. I love the tool but I believe we are taking advantage of just few features compared to all what it has.

### "Room for improvement"

January 16, 2023

4.0

Pros

With a great UX Gitlab offers tons of features that other competitors like Github have as paid ones. Another thing I like a lot is that as a company they are very transparent and let everyone know what features they are working on, what are their plans and roadmaps for a future and more.

Cons

Having such a great product with a free tier it makes that a few differences appear between free tier, paid tier, on premise and on premise paid tier. The features will appear at different time lapses and you probably will miss features for a better license.

Pros

what I like most is that Gitlab provides intuitive UI and UX journey for users to fork and merge and the likes

### "Gitlab CI/CD , SCM"

December 22, 2022

the best available CI?CD tool along with SAST scanners in built and all auto devops pipelines. I enjoy working with this tool and configuring it.

Pros

The best available CI/CD and SCM tool available compared to industry best github. We use EKS deployments specially from a fully generated CI?CD auto devops pipeline in gitlab and there are various features gitlab leveraged in sdlc of a product .

Cons

The advanced search functionality could improve better and devops metrics can be improved. We need search functionality for regular premium users to go through files and search for a string and all.

### "Makes Source Code and Project Management easy for your team"

August 17, 2023

5.0

GitLab provides an excellent solution to our teams source code management and provides the tools we need to work with agile project management using boards to organise and schedule work for the project.

Pros

I liked that it was possible to have GitLab installed on-premise rather than being forced to use the Cloud version, don't get me wrong Cloud services have their place but sometimes you just have to keep things local. The GUI is also something that I find intuitive to use and this helps to ensure that we use it to the best of it's ability in terms of project management.

Cons

It can take some getting used to the workflow that GitLab likes to use if you have not used a tool like this before and I find that the structure of their tutorials is difficult to work with.Maybe I have missed something in their website, but they could improve the learning resources.

### "Gitlab review"

April 16, 2023

4.0

GitLab has been a great asset to my development toolbox, and I'm glad to have it.

Pros

GitLab has been a great resource for me as a developer, providing a user-friendly interface and lots of documentation for assistance. I can collaborate with colleagues, keep track of code changes, set up repositories and branches easily, and track issues, bugs, and feature requests, all of which help me stay on top of my projects.

Cons

Although GitLab is a great platform with many powerful features, it can be difficult to use and understand for those without much experience with version control systems. The UI can be confusing, and the language can be overwhelming. Additionally, there have been reports of bugs and other issues which can be disheartening. Ultimately, GitLab may not be the best choice for everyone.

### "A Solid Flavor of Dev/Ops Platform"

September 13, 2022

5.0

GitLab is a solid albeit smaller contender against competing platforms such as GitHub and BitBucket. Much of which decides the better choice for your team will come down to pricing and personal preference, as the minute differences in features will not be the deciding difference for the majority of teams.

Pros

While not especially advantageous or lacking in contrast to its competitors, GitLab makes it easy to manage or even self-host dev/ops for your team. GitLab integrates a fully featured issue tracker and is arguably more intuitive than the so pervasive GitHub.

Cons

GitLab's lack of a native mobile app is a bit of a letdown, though certainly not a deal-breaker for the vast majority of use cases.

### "Finest Git Repository Really Practical Product"

December 19, 2022

4.0

GitLab's version control has always been useful to me, and the ability for the entire team to work on the same project—or even the same file—is advantageous when developing a real-time project. We are able to manage the entire development to deployment cycle.

Pros

I appreciate having access to a safely hosted repository where I can store and collaborate on code with my team. The industry standard collaboration features help my team operate successfully together. The free option also offers a sizable 15 GB of storage. I can easily manage several projects, and it helps with real-time deployment.

Cons

Its server occasionally crashes and displays an HTTP 500 error. When working with it, there are times when it lags. Comparatively speaking, the GitHub community is larger than the GitLab community.

### "Fantastic git project management tool with good integrations"

February 9, 2018

5.0

Pros

Full suite of tools including but not limited to repository and issue tracking, milestones & issue boards, group and user management including project and even branch level permissions, continuous integration, scheduled jobs, project wiki, etc. All the features work together and using it to manage projects tends to pulls the details together rather than fragmenting them across different spaces. The general workflow is similar enough to Github that most developers find it familiar. In fact there is probably feature parity or beyond, so other than needing another account there has never been much resistance to adoption among our developer team. At the same time the interface well designed enough for non developers to figure it out and stay involved as well.

Cons

The setup and update process is somewhat cumbersome on bare metal (probably easier using dedicated virtual machines and/or their omnibus package). There are a lot of dependencies and assumptions about the environment that make it much the most dreaded package to upgrade on my production servers. It does kind of make assumptions about workflow that don't hold true for all projects. While it is flexible enough to adapt even when using only a subset of features on a project, it can leave people a little confused and overwhelmed because all the other unused bits are still around in the interface.

### "It's good but, definitely not the best"

September 22, 2020

3.0

It works fine, and it's a good alternative for the usual Bitbucket, Jira and Bamboo (or Jenkins) combo that's commonly found on the corporate world. I'd recommend to consider Github Teams or Github Enterprise.

Pros

\- Unlike Github, it can be installed locally, it also makes it highly customizable - It has CI/CD functionality integrated - It has code search and indexing - It's integrated with a docker registry and multiple code repositories

Cons

\- It's highly monolithic, if some feature fails, most of the times everything fails - It's not easy to clusterize the service - It's not easy to update, nor to migrate to a new server - It costs the same to use the self-hosted than the cloud-hosted version - Gitlab CI/CD shared (both free and paid minutes) run on a GCE Kubernetes cluster without any fixed IP address so it's hard to access your servers unless you open ports publicly or create a VPN tunnel

### "Thanks to GitLab, we are able to iterate faster and more efficiently."

March 30, 2023

5.0

GitLab is an open-source, code collaboration platform that enables real-time collaboration for all team members involved in a software project. Our adoption of GitLab has resulted in efficient project repository management, streamlined code merging, and faster bug tracking, which are significant benefits for our team

Pros

The integration capabilities of GitLab with third-party software providers are incredibly beneficial to me. Additionally, I am fond of its version control feature, and the active user community is a valuable resource for resolving any challenges I encounter while using GitLab.

Cons

Certain aspects of GitLab could benefit from a more intuitive design. Specifically, the analytics and board search features could be simplified to enhance user-friendliness.
