Nel complesso mi ci trovo bene, soprattutto perché riesce a racchiudere in un unico ambiente tutto quello che serve per gestire il codice in un team di sviluppo. Nella mia esperienza lo uso soprattutto per repository Git, merge request, pipeline CI/CD e gestione dei permessi, quindi per attività abbastanza quotidiane e concrete, non solo per consultare il codice. Una delle cose che apprezzo di più è che GitLab risulta abbastanza ordinato e semplice da navigare. Rispetto a GitHub non l’ho trovato radicalmente diverso, perché il concetto di base è simile, però in alcuni punti GitLab mi sembra leggermente più chiaro, soprattutto quando devo muovermi tra repository, branch, merge request e pipeline. La sensazione è che le sezioni principali siano abbastanza facili da trovare, anche per chi non è un utente super avanzato. Io ho un livello medio con questo tipo di strumenti e non ho avuto particolari difficoltà a orientarmi nell’utilizzo quotidiano. Mi piace anche il fatto che GitLab sia pensato bene per il lavoro in team. Nel mio caso lavoro con gruppi di circa 5 o 6 persone, quindi è importante avere uno strumento che permetta di vedere in modo chiaro cosa stanno facendo gli altri, quali modifiche sono state proposte, quali merge request sono aperte e se le pipeline sono andate a buon fine. Da questo punto di vista GitLab aiuta a mantenere un buon controllo sul flusso di lavoro, evitando di perdere troppo tempo a cercare informazioni sparse in strumenti diversi. Un altro aspetto positivo è l’integrazione con le pipeline CI/CD. Nel mio caso non mi sono occupato di crearle o modificarle da zero, perché erano già presenti nel progetto, però le utilizzo spesso per verificare lo stato delle build e dei controlli automatici dopo le modifiche. Anche solo da utilizzatore, trovo comodo avere questi controlli direttamente collegati alle merge request, perché permettono di capire subito se una modifica può creare problemi prima di essere integrata nel branch principale. In generale, il vantaggio più grande di GitLab secondo me è che rende più strutturato il lavoro sul codice. Non è solo un posto dove salvare repository, ma un ambiente dove si possono gestire versionamento, revisione del codice, permessi e controlli automatici in modo abbastanza coerente. Per un team di sviluppo questo è molto utile, soprattutto quando più persone lavorano contemporaneamente sugli stessi progetti. Cons L’aspetto che mi piace meno di GitLab, almeno per la mia esperienza, riguarda soprattutto la gestione delle merge request tra i vari branch. In teoria il processo è chiaro, perché si crea una richiesta di merge, si controllano le modifiche, si verifica lo stato della pipeline e poi si procede con l’integrazione. Nella pratica, però, quando ci sono più branch coinvolti o quando il flusso di lavoro aziendale è un po’ articolato, può diventare abbastanza macchinoso. Mi è capitato di avere la sensazione che alcune merge request richiedano più passaggi del necessario, soprattutto quando bisogna capire bene da quale branch partire, verso quale branch fare il merge e quali controlli devono essere superati prima di completare l’operazione. Non è un problema bloccante, però può rallentare un po’ il lavoro, soprattutto quando si sta seguendo una consegna o quando più persone del team stanno lavorando su parti diverse dello stesso progetto. In quei casi bisogna fare attenzione a non sbagliare branch, a non perdere modifiche e a non creare conflitti inutili. Un altro punto migliorabile è che GitLab, essendo uno strumento molto completo, a volte può sembrare un po’ pieno di opzioni. Questo non è necessariamente un difetto, perché molte funzioni sono utili, però per un utilizzo quotidiano da sviluppatore non sempre servono tutte. Alcune schermate possono risultare un po’ cariche, specialmente quando ci si concentra solo su repository, merge request e pipeline. Dopo un po’ ci si abitua, ma all’inizio alcune sezioni possono dare l’impressione di essere più complesse del necessario. Per quanto riguarda le pipeline CI/CD, nel mio caso le ho usate soprattutto come utente, quindi controllando pipeline già esistenti e non configurandole da zero. Da questo punto di vista sono molto utili, ma quando qualcosa fallisce non sempre è immediato capire dove sia il problema, almeno se non si conosce bene come è stata costruita la pipeline. A volte bisogna entrare nei log, interpretare l’errore e capire se dipende dal codice, dalla configurazione o da qualche controllo automatico. Non è una cosa impossibile, però richiede un minimo di esperienza e può far perdere tempo se si cerca una risposta veloce. In generale non direi che GitLab sia difficile da usare, però alcune operazioni, soprattutto quelle legate alle merge request e alla gestione dei branch, potrebbero essere più intuitive. Per un team che lo usa tutti i giorni resta uno strumento valido e completo, ma secondo me potrebbe migliorare nel rendere più semplice e immediato il flusso di merge, soprattutto per chi non lavora direttamente sulla configurazione avanzata del progetto ma lo usa principalmente per sviluppare e collaborare con il resto del team. Overall it is an indispensable, sturdy tool for modern team collaboration and DevOps orchestration, even when things get messy, we still stay on track. Pros GitLab has this biggest edge, like it really leans into a full, everything-in-one DevOps platform kind of approach. You get source code management, issue tracking, and CI/CD pipelines that are built in, all tied together inside one single interface, and yeah it feels like a huge productivity push.
