December 17, 2024 5.0 I've just returned from a holiday, and I remember that just before I left I heard of a new version of Macrium. I'll be looking into it over the next couple of days. I haven't read the specs so I don't know what changes were made, but I'll probably switch to the new version even if it's only available as a subscription product. I wouldn't want to be without the backups that Macrium Reflect provides. Pros I have rarely had a problem retrieving stuff from backups. I do a full backup of my Windows C drive once a week onto an external drive, and differential backups daily. I keep three full backups. The main backups are 300Gb and more. Now and again, when something goes wrong and I need to retrieve a file from the backup, it's a simple process that takes very little time. Cons I don't have anything bad to say about Macrium Reflect. December 9, 2024 5.0 Once great, and I would automatically renew my subscription without consideration. Now I won't recommend it to anyone and, in fact, recommend they look elsewhere. Reason? It is now on suscription only, so no paying once and knowing you're safe. Now, if you hit hard times your backup strategy is toast. Pros Works very well indeed, and previous support has been prompt and good. I've restored backups, both when disks have been replaced, and to recover fat-fingered accidents, and usually it is pain-free (once I couldn't restore a backup on a network drive to a virgin PC, but that got resolve). I used to recommend Reflect to friends and clients (especially clients!) as an essential tool that should be on the PC from the start. Cons It can fail to complete a backup if a disk has read errors. That's kind of understandable because you don't want to have what you think is a backup but is just random noise on some disk sectors, but it is useful to be able to complete the backup anyway and know some of it might be flaky - better to have some data than none at all, and typically in this case you might be trying to save a drive that is failing. However, I think this has been resolved in more recent versions (haven't had to try it since - drives either work or not nowadays and rarely warn of impending disaster). Review Source MW Mike W. If a PC is trashed or a new HD installed then the Rescue media on a USB stick can always do the job. Pros Simple answer, It has not yet let me down in restoring a backup to a PC or server when it has been necessary to do so. Also being able to mount a backup as a drive to access files without having to do a restore is a big plus point. Cons Nothing comes to mind, the only annoyance can be when an update or fix comes through, occasionally a reboot is required. Not really a dislike and just an observance. There are not many options out there which are fairly priced yet professional and quick enough for my demands. Macrium Reflect meets those requirements perfectly so far, and I am very confident that there will be no problems should desaster ever strike. It is user friendly, works quickly and yet has all the options that a semi-pro with a home office environment like me could wish for. Pros Abundant options, fair pricing, streamlined and transparent UI and backup creation. Backs up very quickly. Easy and flawless creation of desaster recovery media. As you can imagine, we benchmark against competitors regularly. Once you get past the learning curve that new users experience the software is pretty much “Set & Forget”. We have had a couple weird issues here and there but did eventually figure them out. The backups are quite fast and having ransomware protection to restrict the backup partition to only be accessible by Macrium Reflect is also critical to my business. We are often caught in between 'too small for enterprise' and 'too big for small business'. Pros It was a good replacement for Code42's Crashplan Enterprise, when they dropped on-premises self-hosted storage. The Reflect management server has a good set of features and is easy to use. Cons When Macrium dropped the free version for home, I switched to the build-in Synology backup for my home PCs. It has saved me numerous times and continues to be an asset. I actually hope to get it approved as one of our enterprise tools this year when it comes time to buy software at the end of the year. Pros I like the speed and simplicity of the software. In fact, I buy this with my own money for our bare metal imaging and backups and keep it as my little secret weapon. We have an enterprise imaging solution but it isnt as simple as reflect especially when bringing down an image on different hardware. It requires several lengthy steps to capture a bare metal image/backup of a disk. I also really like the ability to actually mount an image and explore the files and folders. When its time to buy software next year I hope to present it as a necessary tool I have been using so I dont have to spend my own money. Cons It took me several reads to figure out if I was upgrading to reflect x workstation or just renewing reflect 8. Even the quote and final payment page didnt specify which version I was going to get. I just hoped for the best and went for it anyway.
