Pros: It allows me to fulfill my work tasks efficiently and with good appearance, it exports my PDF documents very easily, it has many work templates, it does not take up much space on my hard drive, it has many extensions that I can download when I need it and It is always in constant update and I do not have to pay the license

Cons: It occupies a lot of RAM so it was a bit slow, the compatibility of text files with respect to Microsoft Word shows weaknesses

Overall: I have done very complex works in an easy way, I have had very colorful and efficient presentations, as well as, I have done many graphics in Calc, when I have had doubts I have received technical support and I have expanded my opportunities by downloading the extensions, it is an office suite very complete and wonderful

Pros: I have most of the features of Microsoft Office, but without having to pay for a subscription or software. Great if you just need the basics and if you value the free price over having advanced features. Great for word processing and spreadsheets.

Cons: Like all word processors, page layout is weak. I also suspect, but have not really explored, it's book publishing tools are weak. Book publishing requires special tools that were so badly handled in MS Word, and that are not advertised for OO. These include chapter formatting, index and table creation. The only application that I found to do these things was FrameMaker, which is now unaffordable, like most Adobe products.

Overall: In my for my firm, Open Office used to be the primary application for producing documents, spreadsheets and slideshows. It was useful as it was stable and feature rich.

Since then, however, I have switched to Google Docs. These days, I still occasionally use Open Office for the rare occasion when I need a feature that Google Docs is lacking. So the benefit is that it can do things that Google Docs can't.

Pros: Open office is the best alternative to the conventional Microsoft Office package. It is easy to use and in terms of price there is no question that it is the best alternative on the market in my opinion.

Cons: Open Office does not provide as many features as Microsoft Office and the support is not as good but isn't bad either. Besides not having as many features, it has everything needed to create documents in every format needed.

Overall: Open Office is cheap and a great alternative to the conventional Microsoft Office package.

I have used Open Office for over 5 years and I would never switch back to any other software.

Pros: This software is absolutely free! The best thing about OpenOffice is that there is little to no compromise when it comes to features and functionality. Why pay for something when ApacheOffice offers it at no cost?

Cons: Although you can do anything with OpenOffice that you can with other software, I wish specifically that assigning hotkeys to your styles was easier to do.

Overall: I get everything any other office software offers but it is absolutely free.

Pros: Very easy to use, easy to operate and navigate. Downloads for free and converts to office(depending on office version) and is capable of running without all the extra background stuff microsoft office will run with. It is an open format meaning that anyone can make contributions to it and help improve it.

Cons: Some versions of microsoft office don't automatically convert the file if you try to open a document in an open office file on a computer that doesn't have it installed. In that case you can simply download open office and your golden, unless you are unable to download it i.e. work computer or library computer.

Overall: A free solution that was easier to use than word

Pros: It's pretty easy to use and get started and is FREE (open source) so for the price you pay you get a ton of horsepower

Cons: The User interface is very clunky, the menus are often tricky to navigate and the program seems to slow my computer down a bit. I've switched most of my spreadsheet stuff that's not super security sensitive to google sheets because it's in the cloud and the whole team can work on it.

Overall: Free speadsheets

Pros: Freeware, no cost. It is compatible with Microsoft Word. I like the ruler on the top and left side that help in placing and sizing pictures.

Cons: It is very unfortunate that the Open Office Sbase does not seem to be compatible with Microsoft Access.

Overall: Able to open doc files with no problem. It cost me nothing to install.

Pros: OpenOffice gives you what you need from Microsoft Office but without the hefty payments. It does almost all of what you need. If you used Microsofts then you'll know how to use this one.

Cons: Some features are missing, but they're usually minor problems that really don't detract from the overall product.

Pros: Open office has been good for me when I'm using my Mac and I need to work on some Microsoft Office documents. The different programs feel pretty familiar.

Cons: The biggest weakness, to me, is the PowerPoint substitute here. If you're used to Microsoft apps you'll feel mostly at home, though it can be a little rough around the edge.

Pros: It does eventually do what it's supposed to...most of the time... The program functions like a basic notepad program, except with better import and export capabilities and a more expansive user interface. You can change the layout of your document, the font, color, header/footer, margins, etc. Another nice thing is that the product is free.

Cons: The load times for document importing and exporting seem quite excessive. It's just not efficient in that sense. Also, many times the software will crash upon opening a new document. I haven't been able to figure out why, as it doesn't always do this. Essentially, the software seems quite buggy and slow, and isn't really suited for a fast paced business environment.

Pros: The price is right, at free, you can't really complain. I like that I can do different templates, spreadsheets, and many other things with this product!

Cons: I keep having an issue with trying to do a customizable calendar. Keeps asking for some type of filter, and I cannot turn it off, turns it into computer text instead of what I need. But it's not a consistent problem, sometimes it does it, sometimes works like a charm.

Pros: Apache provides very similar features/functions to Microsoft Office. It allows you to create documents almost exactly like Microsoft Word, presentations are fairly simple to create. If you are at all familiar with Microsoft Office, you'll pick up Apache products quickly. If not, there may be somewhat of a learning curve to tackle.

Cons: If you're looking to do massive amounts of word processing, this may not be the best option. I encountered bugs on occasion with an older version. Many people in college would use it for creating basic papers, but for bigger projects, something more complex was needed.
Exporting mailer lists is a bit of a challenge. Word/excel will do it very quickly, whereas this tends to fall short.

Pros: Does almost everything Office does but doesn't cost anything. If you need a great word substitute, this is where you should go.

Cons: Not all of the functionality you'd find in microsofts office can be found here, but it's not lacking much.

Pros: Awesome program to use for everyday basic use. We use it a lot to convert files to and from pdf on our Mac. Easily send documents between a Mac and pc.

Cons: Not much to hate about this software. It could probably be set up and designed a little better, but it gets the job done regardless.

Overall: Easy to use free software. Meets all requirements that we need in a word program.

Pros: I love that this process is free. As a student, I used to be pained by the money needed to drop on something just so that I could format text for papers, when the cost was really more for features I would never use. Open Office is the solution. Great for students or organizations, Open Office is a nice little word processor for general files. It has a feel similar to Word or Pages, without the costs that are/were associated with either application. Additionally, it is able to open rich text, plain text, .doc or .pages files without issue, making it a great resource to access files if you have an application that is unable to open it otherwise or recover the text.

Cons: What I like the least about Open Office is how watered down the product is, there are a lot of times I am yearning for a bit more functionality. It can be a bit buggy in our Mac environment, but mostly in the more advanced features, not as much for the general user. 4.1 is a bit unstable, with a lot of crashes, and customer support is harder to navigate through user forums.

Pros: What's not to like about free software that helps you get stuff done? I am glad that there are great developers and companies that are willing to offer software like this for free.

Cons: Some of the functionality and features are not as good as other commercial software, but because this is free I am a lot more willing to over look those limitations. One feature that is sorely missing is some kind of collaborative editor. I have had to use online document programs to get this capability

Overall: I get increased productivity by being able to create presentations, documents, and spreadsheets without having to pay a lot of money.

Pros: It's nice for people who don't want to spend the money for Office. It gives another option that's free and fairly intuitive. And as long as everyone you know uses OpenOffice (or if you only send .PDF files), you'll never have formatting issues.

Cons: As alluded to above, one of the major problems I've faced in the past when using OpenOffice, is the inability (in some cases) to have Microsoft Word open an OpenOffice file without making it look like a 1st grader tried formatting the document. Given that this is an open source code, the formatting issues and correction time might make buying Microsoft Office a more viable option.

Overall: Free ability to have lots of functionality - just don't share any working documents with people because most companies only have Office.

Pros: Open Office is a product that serves as a replacement for MicroSoft Office Suite for those who can't afford the MS brand. You can save files as MS Word documents if you need to share the electronic files with others. It feels like Word and it looks a lot like Word.

Cons: I can be hard to find what your looking for within the UI and that is mostly because I am used to Microsoft Word so there is an initial learning curve.

Overall: The benefit is to have a full word processor, spreadsheets, presentation suite for free without having to pay for a Microsoft subscription.
