Yes, it isn't the prettiest or the most feature-rich, but it offers everything probably 95% of today's workforce would need, minus real-time editing collaboration. Pros OpenOffice is excellent for a free and open-source office application suite. It offers all the essential core functionality of MS Office for the low low price of absolutely free! When I was a student and began my career I was using OpenOffice exclusively. If offers excellent capabilities right out of the box and is available even on Linux (my preferred operating system). Cons The lack of an online collaboration feature really is the only reason I had to switch away from this with my company. It's a much-needed feature, especially at this time, with everyone working remotely. Pros OpenOffice was the only choice for a good alternative to Microsoft Office until the project got acquired by Oracle who later donated the project to Apache, then project got forked into LibreOffice. which turned to be a bigger project much widely used and more reliable. I like LibreOffice as it's more reliable and stable compare to OpenOffice. but the two are still almost the same very similar in the functions and tools which include the following : OpenOffice Writer, OpenOffice Calc, OpenOffice Impress, OpenOffice Draw, OpenOffice Base, OpenOffice Math. Cons Compatibility issues are the biggest concern. If you originally created a document in Microsoft Word or Excel and then try to open it in the equivalent software within OpenOffice, you may get a red flag that not everything will transfer correctly. Likewise, those that are used to Microsoft Office and its features may occasionally find that OpenOffice doesn't do EVERYTHING Microsoft Office does, at least for now. It carries enough features to enable a user to write and maintain an immense document, such as a novel, easily. In order to make an OpenOffice Writer document compatible with Word, simply save the .odt file as .doc. OpenOffice Impress is my second favorite software in the bundle and can be used to create very nice presentations. It is also a bit easier for a tech newbie to work with vs PowerPoint. Cons OpenOffice Math has a con. Simply because it is not something I would need or use often. I was blown away by the features it offers as what would costs hundreds of dollars going with a competitive office suite. Pros The things that i like about Apace OpenOffice is the community behind the open source software applications, the amount of feature rich the suite is and costs nothing to install on a computer. The suite has improved alot throughout the years and was very impressed with the amount of features it has that Microsoft Office has. Its very close to the competition and it will keep improving in the near future. Cons The user interface hasn't changed much in OpenOffice and i feel like something has to be done. It makes life a lot less complicated! Pros it's free, reliable, serves perfectly as word processor and spreadsheet (I've never really got into the database or other features) and I can save documents however people need them -- for one publisher, I simply send the OpenOffice document; others need Word so I write in OpenOffice, then save as Word no problem. Spreadsheet works perfectly so I use that a great deal as well. There's a privately created Android app that allows me to use OpenOffice docs on my phone, such as my password-protected list of passwords! Cons Same thing I like least about Microsoft Word -- you can't search and replace formatting characters (I have to actually go back to Microsoft Works 1995 to do this!) but otherwise no complaints. Pros What I like most about the software is that it is inexpensive and the source code is available for me to modify to my liking. I like it that the software is able to save in many different formats that can be open on another computer using a different type of office. Cons What I like least about the software is the interface, the formatting and the navigation. The interface is not very attractive looking. Pros I installed it on my home computer when I started using it to learn it and I was amazed that it was too fast to run, since this computer has very low performance and when loading other similar applications it takes a long time. What I like the most is that you do not need a large capacity to run in addition to being able to download it for free because it is not licensed. Cons What I do not like is that it does not have all the advantages of functionality as far as tools are concerned and that it is not 100 percent compatible with Microsoft Office, which is a limitation when exchanging information between both programs. For example, with open office calc and excel lack many tools so that office calc is a hundred percent compatible with the case of macros that are made in excel. I completely turned away from Microsoft's Products and even uninstalled all extensions thereof. I only use OpenOffice and would never switch to another provider. It's very fast, supports virtually any type of document you can imagine and exports into any formats you need, including Microsoft's Word Files, HTML, PDF, etc. Cons I only have one bad experience. There was an security issue a couple years ago and it took actually quite some time until a update was available. Since then this has never happened again, but it still lies in my head.
