Pros I use it for personal and work reasons and I find it very intuitive and easy to use. The thing I like the most is the fact that you can easily convert your doc into PDFs or other formats, or put it into a Google Sheet, and you won't lose a single word or have to rewrite it. Cons I find the synonym suggestions and grammar corrections weak; sometimes the tool doesn't recognize a word that exists. My work sometimes needs me to work on multiple language at a time, while other open Office tools work on one language, with Apache OpenOffice, we can work on multiple languages at same time. Also it's look and feel is sleek and simple making it easier to use. Cons One of the major drawback is that we cannot save files with MS office based extension .docx and .xlsx . So if you are going to create files which needs to be opened on MS office, OpenOffice is not for you. But you can open already saved files with this extension easily using Apache OpenOffice. Manager Computer Hardware Used the software for: 2+ years ### "You get what you pay for" September 26, 2018 2.0 Per the pros and cons, and having stayed faithfully with OO over time, I came to the conclusion last week that it is cheaper to buy an Office suite that works well than to struggle with this free offering that doesn't. I repeat that I appreciate enormously the effort of the volunteers who sincerely create a large body of working, quality code, and who support it through the forums, but my unfortunate conclusion after all that is - it isn't worth it. Just to mention I have the standard Office suite that I paid full price for, like everybody. OO was out of interest and curiosity to see if it is an alternative even up to to a certain level, but it isn't. I'm not sure how you convert frustration to $, but at some point, you're in negative. Bugs get you there immediately. Again, many thanks to the volunteers, but if you're going to spend more than an hour or two with OO, buy yourself the standard Office suite and save yourself a lot of time and frustration. Pros It's free. It covers a lot of the basic day-to-day. Kudos and thanks to the volunteers who created and support this software. Cons It has a number of usability issues. It has some downright bugs. The cost (free) is more than offset by the time and frustration figuring out, or working around, the issues. Pros First and foremost is the freedom of this software. It is open-source and free in terms of cost. This means that the program has many eyes and talented individuals contributing to make it better and that it is available for free. A prime reason why I like OpenOffice is that it can be installed cross platform. Linux doesn't natively support Microsoft Office Products so this is a great alternative when working on a Linux machine or on Windows if cost is a factor. All the functionality one would expect from a Office Suite is here and ready to be used. Cons Two concerns, first is the overall look of the software. It feels dated using it and its UI clunky compared to other options but once you get the hang of it, it works fine. The second is that there are still some compatibility issues between this and Microsoft Office products though this is not OpenOffices fault alone, its hard to match between two separate products that are being independently developed. At the time I owned and operated The Computer Wizard in Plano, Texas. We supported a client base of 5,000. The newest version of MS Office that came out had a HIDEOUS interface and I decided I was done paying $$$ every version change for something I hated. I tried Open Office and liked it immediately. It is a friendly interface and easy to use. Pros This is a rock solid office product with versions compatible on PC, Mac and Linux platforms. It is STABLE. After setup, you simply have to change 3 settings to make it fully MS Office compatible so that it creates .doc and .xls files instead of Open Office versions. Cons No graphics export in spreadsheet. This software has every feature that you could think of and is so easy to use. I know that it may not be a deal breaker for a lot of people, but I even when downloading this software, it is so fast to download and you are able to select which Apache software to download onto your computer, even if it's just one, for example, OpenOffice Calc. So i switched to Apache and - honestly - was not disappointed. Since my last time using it, it gained a lot of functions and especially stepped up in overall appearance of the userinterface and in accessability. I would definitely recommend checking it out, before spending loads of money on commercial competitors! Pros It's astonishing, that Apache OpenOffice is still a freeware, if you keep in mind the incredible amount of functions it features. The "similarity" to Microsoft Office makes it very easy to switch between those products. The same goes for interchangeability of data. With Apache OpenOffice you can edit data from Microsoft Office without any loss in format and layout. Cons While it features a lot of features, there might be some very advanced functions, that are not availible in OpenOffice.
