July 27, 2018 5.0 Pros It is an application that allows us to process texts, spreadsheets, presentations and new online PDFs or edit other existing documents, in turn we can share them with other users of the network through the internet, keeping the documents in Cloud. Google Docs has a publication system that allows us to obtain the Embed code that we can embed in Blogs, or in other cases it allows us to publish it through html with the link that it generates. This application allows files up to 500K plus 2 MB of images, and when they are larger allows us to use other tools to save as Scribd or Slideshare, and uses a very innovative editor based on java script, and allows you to display the comments attached in box in the same page where you want to indicate the reference of that comment, and in turn allows you to respond quickly in the same space, allowing discussion among collaborators. Cons This application is very useful, possibly the only thing I see is the capacity of documents that reaches up to 500K plus 2 MB of images, so those documents with many images is rejected. Easy to use and very user friendly set up! I am a fan of Word myself, always have been and always will be- but I will be honest Google is a close second! Sometimes I keep my documents in docs because of the ease of inviting other users to edit/view the doc. I would highly recommend the product just remember going into it, it can pretty much do everything Word can do, just maybe be a slightly different action to get it done. Pros For me the biggest pro was being able to work mobility without fear of losing my work! I was able to start working on my desktop, move to my mobile and then close the doc until morning back on the computer! Another huge perk for me is the auto saving! I know Microsoft has also enabled the auto save feature but I have never lost a Google doc or progress regardless of computer security locking or time out error or the great wonder computer freezing and having to restart! Google held onto it all! Cons Coming from Microsoft I was use to certain functions being completed one way and with setup being slightly different it may take a few additional clicks to find the way around, but most common functions are readily available! My second complaint, this maybe a user error, I have difficulty turning my Google docs to word docx and vice versa.. sometimes the format doesn’t not always care over as hoped and I have to take some additional time editing the format. The automatic saving also helps students immensely! Among teachers, Docs also helps us share ideas and keep collaborative files accessible to everyone, even when not on a work computer! It has been great using this tool, and I highly recommend it. Pros Google Docs is an incredibly versatile tool, allowing you to write and edit word documents anywhere you have internet access - or even where you don't if you turn on "offline access"! As a teacher with a limited set of technology, it can be challenging for students to always get the same chromebook, but this way, they can access their documents with any of them, and collaborate with others in real time. This also helps us stay "green", limiting our paper usage. On top of that, Google Docs is always adapting, with more Add-ons available to improve and increase its capabilities. The transfer from MS Word to Docs is even easier now that Docs can adapt your Word documents and edit them without changing the file type! Other than some missing capabilities, Docs fills my need for an online document creator, and continues to improve. Cons While Google Docs can take MS Word files and use them, the program is missing several capabilities that Word boasts. The need for an internet connection can also be frustrating, but when everything has internet, and you can turn on "offline access" after your first use, this is easily looked past. It comes with cloud-storage, and can also be edited off-line, with changes that are saved when the internet connection is restored again. Google Docs is an indescribably helpful and useful platform, although it does come with a few limitations. Advanced features like mail-merges are impossible, there's a limited selection of fonts, and it's impossible to zoom out and view multiple pages side-by-side, which can make reviewing documents or skimming difficult. February 1, 2019 5.0 Overall it's super easy to use, and even easier to use in the context of a team because of the sharing features. It has most of the features of Word. I would suggest they add the option to upload fonts so I can use the fonts I like. Pros This word processor is super easy to use with groups. I often share documents with others. It's only a couple clicks in the program. Also, there's a plethora of fonts, and as a designer, I like to make my words look pretty, even if it's just a simple document. There's add-on extensions but I don't use them. Maybe they make it more useful, maybe not but they're there if you want them. It's also on every computer you sign into, so it makes it super easy to work anywhere from any device. I use my phone sometimes. Cons It's almost a bit too simple. I like the professionally of Word, and this in comparison looks like a kid's toy program. I have a brand which uses a very common and easy to find font, Bebas Neue. For some reason, even though it's in every other program, Google Docs does not have it. I have to substitute their font, Oswald, and make everything capital to get close. From academic research to business presentations, it allows teams to work on things together remotely. Being on the cloud, it saves every edit that is being made (provided you are connected to the internet) and allows you to browse through the history of changes to know who made what edits. More than that, you could also restore the version back to before a certain change was made. This is a great lifesaver if an accidental edit was made or that a team member made a decision to edit certain things that were not agreed upon. At the same time, Google seems to be constantly making improvements to the functionality of the sheets. It has definitely become more user friendly over the years and the limitations that it had as compared to Microsoft Office is rather minimal now. Cons On the flip side, as it is on the cloud, there is a risk of syncing issues. I've met situations where after a bunch of edits were made, a pop up appears to say that there is something wrong with the connection / document and you have to reload. And due to the error, the historical edit function did not work and did not saved those edits that had been made. Pros The live-updates whenever you make a change on one computer is amazing. We have been using Google Docs for years now, to keep each other up to date. Be it crafting of contracts and scope of work documents to splitting of dinner bills. You can use Google Docs for anything that involves more than 1 person. We used to send docx and xlsx files all over, but now it is simply more intuitive and quick to directly use Google Docs. The permissions is easily set up and restricted. It helps to easily keep people you want in and people you don't want snooping around out. Cons A constant internet connection is required. I am aware there is an offline plugin but it hasn't been working very well or reliably for me. Pros Some of the greatest features on Google Docs are the fact that it always auto-saves all of your documents and you can share them with other people. When you share your Doc, you can send it and give the other people access to make changes or not. This is super helpful for when I share Docs with my students. If I don't want them making changes, then I turn off the access. Another feature that I really like is when I am working and there are multiple people who have the capability to work live on the Doc simultaneously. I have worked with other teachers at the same time and all of us were doing our assigned part of the work, and we can all see what the other is putting and change things where needed. If you have questions or need to make a comment somewhere on a Google Doc, you have the option to add it and it will highlight the part you're questioning or commenting on and your message will be in the margin for everyone to see. And if someone happens to delete something that was needed, you can go to the history and see who made what changes. We have had to go back to restore our work multiple times. All these factors, combined with the fact Google Docs have the same important features as a Word program, make it my go-to document creation program. Cons The only downsides of Google Docs, if they can even be considered drawbacks, is that users need Google accounts to open these documents. That's due to the fact that Google stores all data in Google Drive servers, which are private and secure. With the ability to instantly save changes in source control up in the cloud and share those documents with whoever I choose that is just the beginning of the amazing functionality they provide. There is so much packed into Google Docs that I don't think I could really enumerate all of the powerful functionality but it is all there. At this point the only reason I could see someone switching back to MS Word would be for some super technical documentation that needs very specific formatting. That is about the only weak point of Google Docs. Even then though it is intentionally simple, and I'm sure that is the way they want to keep it. Pros I like the accessibility with Google Docs and how easy it is to share. Whenever we create a doc, anyone that you give permission to can access it 24/7. You are able to manage and keep track of what corrections are made and by whom. You can also control who makes these changes and when while your working on the document. Even multiple users can edit the document at the same time. It's great that Google docs is free and virtually compatible with all programs. And it's super easy to learn. It even allows you to access it from home or while travelling as long as you have an internet connection. Cons The biggest drawback is that you need an internet connection so it does not work offline. You will not have access to your documents without the internet. Another dislike is how plain it is. There is no multiple variations of styles, templates, charts, etc. It is the very opposite of Powerpoint where you would have a variety of choices. So yes it is pretty plain presentation wise. I have heard from others tho that it is hard to share documents with others who do not have a Gmail account. I would like for there to be more variety of text editing options as well.
