By far the easiest hosting service" February 29, 2020 5.0 I switched from Netlify to Firebase and the difference was night and day. While Netlify was super slow to serve images (sometimes taking over 1 minute for an image that was 300kb!), Firebase has been blazing fast and I'll be using it for all my smaller side projects Pros \- Super easy to deploy to the server (much better than AWS in this) - Great, easy to use UI and advanced features - Very quick to serve images (better than Netlify), even on the free tier - Excellent for smaller side projects that don't need a global CDN. Cons \- The DB editing UI could be better (no option to duplicate object, etc) - Hosting is located in the US, which might be an issue if you need a global CDN. Besides that, I don't think I have any complaints. As a developer, it's been great. Pros What I like about this application is that Firebase is super simple to use and offers a variety of different characteristics that can be incorporated into its application, which would be difficult to implement using other tools. I used the Firebase for the authentication of the application, the storage of data, as well as the Push notifications and the free level covered everything I need for a large -scale application. Pros I like the fact that you have tutorials inside the pages, so if you don't know how to use that function (for example 'Realtime Database'), you have the tutorial there, on the page; Obviously you can include firebase everywhere (Android, iOS, Web, Unity) and without problems; You can store a lot of informations using the free version of firebase and the prices are very nice; A lot of extensions that you can add to your app/website (for example 'Payments with stripe') Cons At the moment i can't find nothing that i don't like regarding Firebase. You have to pay after a number of queries. We've never had a stability problem, the database has always worked. Very good feature are reports that you can receive directly to your mail when the application crashes. Cons We missed a mobile app to check some things quickly. Administrators can then send messages or notifications to individual users. It is similar to a Live Chat application, but more one-way in that users actions are sent to administrators, and administrators can react if they need to. The setup definitely took time, and we got caught by surprise at our first bill. We were sending too much data through the system. We realized that we needed to create a Pub/Sub system where users and admins watch a flag in their data. Once there was an administrator online to send data to, who wanted to see that data, only then would data be sent. Implementing this system cut our monthly bill by 75% or more. We are happy with the platform and will continue to use it for the meantime. We will always evaluate other platforms, but we have found that none can really do everything we want out of the box, and all require some tweaking to get the product working the way we would like. Pros Firebase is a well-known and well-liked real-time database that is hosted now by Google. They have been around for a very long time and have always had excellent uptime. They provide real-time data for all users of an application, meaning chats, notifications, or just tracking can all be done live on the website without needing people to reload. Cons Firebase does have a bit of a learning curve. It is not a simple Pub/Sub system, but an actual database that lives in the cloud. The documentation is mediocre, but that is probably because they are trying to provide documentation for dozens of scenarios and languages. The access control rules are fairly complex and required to ensure data remains secure, but they are not easy to set up. This resulted in a lot of complexity being removed as we could completely replace things like Apache couchdb, and ES. At the end of the day, you will be replacing multiple tools from your cloud backend with a single solution with a beautiful portal where your data can be managed much more effectively. Pros I like the real-time database offering from Firebase. The real-time database was faster compared with our infrastructure. Changes were reflected on our endpoints almost instantaneously when on a good Internet connection. The documentation is very good overall. The design of the cloud portal is neat and follows Google's material design patterns. The color pallette of the portal is easy on the eyes and is beautiful to work in. Also, as Firebase is an offering by Google, you get the benefit of Google's scalability. Compared with creating a traditional cloud backend solution from scratch, there is a lot of added peace of mind that you will be able to hit your databases with tens of thousands of requests with ease from your application. Cons There should be a more info and documentation around how to set up database collections. I personally found setting up the collections a bit complicated. It's notifications also i have implemented it's FCM this will easily integrate to your application. Cons Deploying an updated version of a function can take awhile (~5-10 mins), and it's not always clear why. The functions we deploy are not that heavy, and it's surprising how long this takes. Support is hit and miss. I've generally had a good experience working directly with firebase support, but sometimes the issues are related to google cloud and not firebase, so I'm not always certain who I should be contacting (e.g. an issue with region in firebase functions logs ended up being a google cloud logging issue). For a simple out of the box solution its a fantastic product but if you are thinking about using their realtime database and need to scale I would not recommend it. Pros I liked the fact that it comes with out-of-the-box authentication sdk's. Building authentication is a very repetative process and Firebase comes pre packaged with everything you need to quickly build your entire auth flow as well as tap into 3rd party API's for authentication. Cons The real time database is great for building MVP products but quickly realized that it is a nightmare in production. After releasing v2 of our product, we quickly realized that there are some rather large limitations of Firebase Realtime DB. Particularly when you hit the 100% load usage.
