Software Developer Computer Software Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Fast, Inexpensive Backend" June 3, 2022 5.0 Pros Firebase was incredibly easy to get setup in our mobile app. Every feature we needed Firebase seemed to have an answer for. Database, Push Notifications, Image Storage and even more features we haven't even gotten to fully implementing are available, and many of them completely free. We also enjoy that the data in Firebase can be read on realtime allowing us to provide instantaneous access to data for our users. Cons The only cons in my opinion are the potential costs as your software grows and the lock-in. If you haven't analyzed the cost for firebase then you may be surprised in the future by how much you are paying. It isn't outrageous, but is something you should consider for your business model. It is a reliable and efficient. I wouldn't choose any other backend infrastructure when I am out a mobile app! Pros Firebase is a extremely reliable mobile development platform. It has very good documentation which makes it easy for developers to navigate through the platform. I have use it many times to develop quality apps in a timely and efficient manner. Specifically, I love the ability to integrate with Google Analytics. This way you can easily leverage the data that comes through your app without building out a custom analytics too. Cons I wish Firebase extended for web apps as well. They are mainly for mobile infrastructure backend but I hope to see them get involved with the web side as well in the future. Can see at a glance what crashes/issues are affecting customers in Crashlytics. We use analytics but not others yet. Firebass test lab might be the next step. Pros Crashlytics is great and very modern. Filtering crash reports and instances of thwm is really good and clean. Easy to use. The extras you can bolt on are endless. Analytics are helpful too. Cons Hard to know what is on offer with such a plethora of features. I can't say the same for other projects, where I've had to use much less intuitive and effective systems to build a similar result. Pros I absolutely LOVE Firebase. The graphical interface is beautifully designed and makes managing collections of data and customization features easy. The documentation for Firebase and Cloud Firestore (the newest iteration of Firebase) is terrific and clear. I have used the software for many personal and professional projects, and its integration with modern web services like Node.js, React.js and others makes it a powerful tool for professionals and hobbyists alike. It allows you to have real-time functionality with a MongoDB-like collection structure, without the use of web sockets. You can write less code and get drastically better results. Cons There is very little I don't like about Firebase. Some of the deprecated features from previous releases were good, and it's unfortunate to have to make changes to some older code bases. Some other developers complain about the long method names (ie. onAuthStateChange) but this doesn't bother me at all. It's great that Firebase also is linked closely with Google Cloud which makes management much easier. Cons Firebase isn't that complete and I personally would go using other enterprise services for production apps. It is great for small projects but scaling makes it a bit hard to use this platform. The account setup was quick and frameworks for multiple languages are easy to include in your project. We used Firebase for push notifications to web browsers and we got it off the ground in hours. Firebase is fairly similar to the old GCM. Cons We would like to see a solution for push notifications that we can install within our corporate network as firewall rules are needed to make sure Firebase servers can reach clients inside the firewall. Google expects you to open your firewall to 49,000+ IP addresses rather than giving you a more specific domain name for your firewall rule.
