From a seasoned network administrator" August 23, 2023 5.0 I learned about computers by custom building them back in 1994. Individually purchasing all the components, I needed, then assembling the system to my client’s wish’s. I was a big Microsoft Windows fan at that point. My how things have changed. I’m now a big open-source software fan. I don’t wish to delve into the advantages of open-source software vs Microsoft software at this point. You will eventually discover this on your own. What I do wish to discuss is an amazing enterprise backup solution I came across, while googling “best enterprise backup solutions” various reviews and recommendations appeared after my search. I filtered through the reviews and one product really stood out amongst the others. Now, let’s get to the “meat” of my point. Some of the other backup solutions would only function on a Microsoft operating system and not on an open-source OS. Strike One! Some of the other backup solutions did not offer any virtualization appliance installation options. Strike Two! And after downloading and importing Nakivo’s Backup appliance into VirtualBox and having it up and running in under 15 minutes! Strike Three! All others are out! Pros It can run as a Virtual Appliance. The appliance is a Linux OS. Administrators can have it up and running and preforming backups in under 15 minutes. File level restore. Many other reasons to implement this backup solution in your environment. Install the free trial to discover for yourself. Cons I actually could not find any short comings while using the Nakivo Backup Appliance. It certainly makes your life as a network administrator so much better! We've used it for disaster recovery over a ransomware with flawless results.Support is great and responsive, with almost instant response.I recommend this solution to everyone with great confidence. Pros Nakivo has proven to be a lifesaver for us during a ransomware attack. Thanks to its powerful disaster recovery capabilities, we were able to recover all of our important files in just a matter of minutes. Within one day, all of our virtual machines were up and running again with no data loss. The support personnel were extremely helpful throughout the entire recovery process, guiding us every step of the way. We are extremely grateful for the flawless results and quick turnaround time that Nakivo provided us with during this critical time. The product has evolved over time from a cheap and simple VMware backup solution to a backup suite providing a lot of options and features. We have successfully deployed instances of VMware backup, replication, WAN replication, O365 backup, physical workstation backup, replication to amazon and multi-tenancy. Pros They provide great support. Over time when we had issues they always went out of their way to provide satisfactory solutions. It is very easy to setup and use regardless of the size of installation. They still provide an affordable product and I believe you definitely will get your money's worth. There is a lot of active development and not only toward new features, but also in improving stability and performance. They try to get feedback from their userbase when planning for new features. Cons We have had problems with file level recovery on large (>1 TB) XFS file systems. Space reclaim of backup repositories is slow, but has been improved recently. Pros The availability of friendly and helpful support staff. Along with the versatility of the software in virtual and "bare-metal" environments, what gives me the most peace of mind is that I know I can always rely on a support team to help me when there are problems I cannot solve just by consulting the help pages. Cons Sometimes the documentation is not very clear to me - but again, support was always ready to step in and help when I couldn't make sense of the knowledge base. One addition I would like to see is to be able to encrypt data before it reaches a public cloud repository. Installation is incredibly easy. It runs on linux and there are pre-compiled versions for a vast array of platforms. The web GUI is excellent. Also the ability to recover even files from backups give us the granularity we need. In addition in the latest version nakivo introduced indexing in recovery which makes it even easier to browse all files in your backup. Moreover, nakivo has a lot of deployment option and you can deploy it as a NAS appliance, VM, physical machine. Finally in a single pane of glass you have all the information you need which is very good for users that are not administrators and also the support team of nakivo is exceptional at problem solving Cons The cons in nakivo is firstly the 365 backup is done only on premises and it takes a lot of time to finish if you have under 1Gbit fiber connection. It should have the ability to be done entirely on cloud without having to store the backups on prem. And the other thing is the recovery process as well as the backup verification take a lot of time to complete. Finally the monitoring system it provides doesnt worth it really as there are much better monitoring solutions available. Its a 2 minutes check now. Pros Its fire and forget. For long time I used other hyper-v backup solutions and the stability of the backup always was an issue, every weeks I needed hours to validate and correct problems, now I just spend 5 minutos to see that everything happen as supposed. With Nakivo its always fire and forget. No strange errors, you configure once and its done. The policy backup its great, you can create a policy with rules and when you create a new machine in the hypervisor a few minutes later its inside the backup job automatically. Cons The software its almost prefect, the only think that should be improved is the logging visibility. Nakivo does not require a lot of CPU/Memory and can be utilized on Synology backup solutions that do not include Active Backup for Business. Pros Other competitors' products are all subscription-based, whereas Nakivo is perpetual and packed with features found in enterprise backup solutions. Nakivo supports Hyper-V and ESXi without additional fees, and the enterprise version of Nakivo allows you to back up desktop workstations, encrypt backups, compress, duplicate, and back up to the cloud (google archive, wasabi, azure, aws.) Pros \- We really like being able to create a backup copy from our Windows Backup server to a QNAP NAS for immutable backups over our WAN to another site. - Synthetic full backups make daily backups fast. - I like how fast I can restore a VM to Hyper-V, even if the backup was from Nutanix, and even if the backup storage is on my QNAP NAS. Most cannot. Very affordable solution. Cons So far I haven't found any cons with it. It may not be as robust as Veeam with some features, but it does everything we need it to at a literal fraction of the cost. Pros 1\. el tema del calendario de la programacion es maravilloso, normalmente tu programas una tarea y le dices que dias y listo, este tema va mas alla ya que te muestra en el calendario todo el tiempo que se va a ejecutar esta tarea 2. el uso de ancho de banda para la copia de seguridad es eficiente, ya que al tener instalado el transporter de manera independiente esta se realiza de manera muy rapida Cons se debería restaurar el backup con el mismo nombre de la carpeta inicial, ya que uno al restaurar un backup se supone que el anterior no existe. The Pro's far outweight the Cons. Especially as all of the Cons were related to my understanding and techincal proficiency with Linux. We migrated to NAKIVO from VEEAM and are glad we did. Overall it's easier to use than VEEAM Pros It's a low cost highly efficient backup of our VM server environment with file and disaster recovery. NAKIVO tech support is also excellent should you run into issues. As in they're fast to respond and their techs are highly efficient. In addition the later versions have a much more logical and intuitive GUI Cons Did have some issues getting my head around how to deploy it with their "Transporters". Esto significaba eliminar un servidor con los costes que ello conlleva, (licencias de Sistema operativo y de protección, consumo eléctrico, etc). Además de resultar más económico, nos simplificaba tanto la puesta en producción como la gestión por ser muy intuitiva. Hasta el momento no hemos sufrido ninguna pérdida de información que es lo más importante de este servicio. También nos resulta atractivo el constante desarrollo de mejoras continuas que tiene el producto.
