In our company we have more than 100 persons who we plan every day and with Tom's planner this is very easy and very usefull. Pros Easy to use and very clear. And budgetfriendly app. Cons nothing actually. Tom's planner has everything we need. January 24, 2025 5.0 I keep a list of project planning tools that I've tried and tested since 2006... the list includes 32 competitors to Tom's Planner. I use Tom's Planner... I can't praise it enough. We don't want a complicated program that tries to be a jack-of-all-trades. For my use case of planning complex projects and making them understandable for third parties, there is no alternative. In our case, we are scheduling marketing campaigns, especially complex shooting days and photoshoots with large crews and no room for error. Pros Easy to use, quick to understand, very flexible in its application. I can plan on a monthly basis or down to the minute. Collaboration is fast and easy, even with external collaborators. I can share the plans as a link with my clients or the entire film crew, so everyone knows exactly what the shooting day will look like. Cons There's really nothing the developer is responsible for here. Exporting Gantt charts as PDF or PNG always ends up in something that is rarely legible. But for that, Tom's Planner does offer sharing the plan as a link. Switched from [Merlin Project](https://www.capterra.com/p/89688/Merlin-Project/) Tom's Planner is easier to use. New colleagues can immediately use the tool without extensive onboarding. Training is not necessary. Tom's Planner makes it easier for us to share the finished plan with our film crew (as a web link), so everyone can view the plan. You can keep rearranging tasks and make small or large changes in no time. You (probably) don't need more than this. Cons There is no mobile app, and the web version is too small on my phone. It's decent for viewing the schedule, but to make adjustments, I need to switch to my computer. Sharing via URL is very useful to create transparency with suppliers and project partners. Cons connect people tags with emails (e.g. MS) to make resssource plannning more effective. Have the option to rewind to original time plans to visualize the delays. Optimally also make comments on delays. That would be very very helpful to show to customers how it moved back and why. Also, on occasion, students create a whole plan and forget to save it, which should not be possible. Pros The simplicity of it, it is my go-to project management tool as my students learn it quickly. Cons Lack of an education license - I’d love to use it with even more of my classes and students but having to keep deleting my project plan to start a new ones is off-putting. As lecturers, we should have the option to create multiple plans for free in order introduce the software to more of our students who will most likely continue using it in their careers. It's so easy to implement. I've been managing project or 15 years and I also teach it in a business school, that's the one I always start with. Pros Easy and fast to implement, also with teams that are not used to such tools. Does all what's needed to handle a project, even a semi-complex one, which covers 95% of the needs. Affordable. Love the sharable link of each project and that it can be protected by a password. Cons An app would be great, and a few more options and flexibility. Not overly bloated with a bunch of features that take you away from a single screen with a gantt chart. Best combination of simplicity of a spreadsheet with more structure and clarity. Cons Lack of mobile app and dark mode but the mobile app is by far the biggest feature missing for me. If a mobile app is developed please find a way to retain the simplicity and ability to see the gantt chart. I highly recommend this tool to any design or software development students. Pros Unlike other Gantt chart tools that feel a bit restrictive (like Monday.com), this one gives you complete freedom to structure your planning exactly how you want. You can customize almost everything—icons, labels, columns, zoom levels, and more. In the meantime, the UI is intuitive and fast, making it the perfect upgrade over creating Gantt charts in Excel. Cons When creating highly detailed schedules, it can be difficult for team members and stakeholders to read them. I’ve fallen into this trap a few times. In my experience, the tool is also not ideal for tracking daily to-dos. This can make the Gantt chart too large and cluttered, making it harder to focus on specific tasks.
