### "Utilisation Nextcloud "

March 3, 2025

4.0

Best Choice in Health Care.

Pros

Secure, fast, easy to use, easily adopted by nurses and doctors

Cons

As a (FREE!) community-Edition-user with no programming skills it would be cool if you could offer a bounty to the IT-Guys in the forum if you need additional features....

May 4, 2023

2.0

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

### "A great solution for folks that want more control over their data."

July 27, 2018

4.0

Centralization of my files and documents, ease of management and use, and desktop/mobile clients for every platform that I use (Windows, Mac, iOS). Additionally, it's completely free and does all the things that I need it to do.

Pros

I've been using Nextcloud as a replacement for Google Drive and Google Docs for the last four or five years. It has a ton of really great apps that I can install that can replicate popular Google services. For instance, I can use the Nextcloud desktop and mobile sync clients to have Google Drive like functionality. I can install a calendar app that gives me Google Calender functionality. There are apps for tasks, documents, and e-mail that all work really well, and again, replicate that Google functionality that we've all come to be fans of. However, my favorite feature is the "News" app that lets me setup all of my RSS feeds and view them in a browser. Previously I had used Google Reader, but when Google shut down that product, it left me searching for a replacement. I tried several other options, but eventually stumbled onto Nextcloud. Initially I only wanted to use Nextcloud for the News app, but when I saw everything that it could do, I migrated away from Google entirely and now use my self hosted Nextcloud instance which gives me full control over my documents and files.

Cons

The biggest con for me with this application is it never upgrades properly. I use a third party hosting provider called Dreamhost, and whenever I attempt to do an automatic or manual upgrade to my Nextcloud instance, I end up breaking it and have to rebuild it from scratch. I don't know if this is due to something on my hosting provider's end, but every single time I've attempted to do an upgrade it has failed. Additionally, community support can sometimes be lacking. Since this is an open source product, you have to rely on a lot of forum posts and blog entries to find solutions to your problems. Sometiems that can be frustrating.

Dear user, Thank you for the review on Capterra! We're very glad you are happy with Nextcloud! Nextcloud upgrades should absolutely not give any issues - there must be a problem at Dreamhost if they do. In addition, we offer our customers stand-by support when doing upgrades to make sure even large installations upgrade smoothly. Our experienced team is extremely adept at identifying and fixing them quickly! If you want to get the most out of Nextcloud, consider a Nextcloud Subscriptions to benefit from our expertise and additional functionality like Outlook integration. The community forums are - well that, community forums, only really suitable for home users.

### "Own your own cloud server"

February 1, 2024

5.0

You phone is important and the data on it is even more important. With some products, it uploads a small amount of information but misses text messages, caller loags, and other critical files. With an 8tb hard drive, expenses from other commercial cloud art era go down keeping your information safe and secure.

Pros

Fast and secured file transfers from phones and cloud server using VPN and SSL options.

Cons

Sometimes you work on app but when an update happens, it isn't available (probably for good reasons).

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

The ability of running the system on a Raspberry Pi that can make it easy to add more servers and hard drives, as needed, to increase services.

### "A Solid Cloud Hosted Storage"

August 23, 2019

5.0

Pros

It was an easy PHP web app to setup that is fairly extensible. It has a large selection of plugins that let you add basically all functionality you’ll need to parallel something like DropBox Enterprise. I have only used the self-hosted version, so I can only speak to that, but so far, it has been fairly stable, running on an 8core 12GB VM with Ubuntu 18.04 (past 6 months) and Ubuntu 14.04 (for the past 3-4 years). Given that it’s self-hosted though, you’ll get no official support, except from the community forums which have been friendly and helpful. The devs are also fairly active there, so you’ll get good answers. It maintains great integration with iOS and desktop devices (can’t speak for Android), and using it together with a SAML setup is quite a breeze. So far, it has scaled to about 150K small files and 1.5TB of storage. It’s built-in authentication system is also quite robust, with support for TOTP and FIDO 2FA via the plugin system. It also maintains solid integration to Collabora Online and OnlyOffice, allowing real-time document editing with multiple users and guests, which has come in handy quite a few times. Great software overall!

Cons

Can be a bit difficult to set up initially. You’ll need a solid understanding of SysAdmin basics to even get off the ground, since it’ll rely on you having a properly configured web server. You’ll also need to know how to properly secure both the installation, as well as the database Nextcloud runs on. A compromise to either of those points would cause a security issue.

Alternatives considered

[Seafile](https://www.capterra.com/p/161574/Seafile/)

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

I was more looking for a traditional Dropbox/Box/etc... alternative, than purely a file syncing system. Further, the Seafile app for iOS is garbage and given I’m primarily mobile-oriented, having a solid app is of great importance.

### "Managing Confidential Data with Nextcloud for a Small Business"

August 23, 2019

5.0

We manage data that has RESIDENCY requirements. We cannot use public cloud companies for data storage. Nextcloud solves that problem for us: we use it for all of our client and company data, and we have high confidence in our ability to keep confidential data PRIVATE. We share our data with customers using Nextcloud 2FA and this just works so well. We use the Nextcloud apps to replace the privacy-mining apps that our standard Android phones otherwise steal from us. Nextcloud rocks!

Pros

Robustness. It just WORKS, and it's layered approach to security (where you can add your own layers) gives it World Class security management for your data, if you go to the trouble of implementing it. Simple and intuitive for users and customers to navigate. Incredibly good file sharing capabilities, with 2FA so easy to implement you'd be crazy not to do it! File restore...for when things go wrong at the Users end. Ability to integrate third-party apps and services (Cryptomator, Mountain Duck, sftp file servers) to create a server so easy we WANT to use it (most are so hard to operate but require you to use it...making it less attractive and thus likely not used properly).

Cons

Updates are too frequent and sometimes break things that were not broken. Update cycle needs to be a lot slower OR old versions need to be kept running for longer. The update cycle is the thing we fear the most. Sometimes I do so hate engineers. But in fairness, Nextcloud offer subscription options that buy more stability - they just don't offer such options that are attractive for small businesses (sorry guys). Never blindingly fast (but fast enough to not frustrate anyone). Native E2E encryption has not worked well for us, but arguably that makes it BETTER as we now add our own layer: we use CRYPTOMATOR instead as it's vastly superior to any other cloud encryption software.

### "The Number One-Solution for your personal and private cloud!"

July 23, 2021

5.0

It has been a great journey from the very beginning to the current Nextcloud Hub 22. The solution worked out of the box and can be extended with many stable plugins so that there is anything you can dream of which can be implemented - even with writing an app on your own while the number of apps increased week by week!

Pros

Nextcloud appeared from the vast ruins of ownCloud which I always liked, but always hassled with once there was an update. It was vital from the very beginning, it was more open, it was more stable - and everything you needed to get if up and running worked like a charm straight from the scratch. With each version there was not only an evolution, but a refinement of features, an open conversation with the community (something ownCloud really lacked of) and a visible progress. Besides, working and using Nextcloud is just wonderful.

Cons

Nothing that would be worth mentioning - indeed there are no negative aspects regarding my use case and the use case of my customers. It would be nice to get a fully-featured IMAP-server integrated in Nextcloud, but this is a luxury issue. Besides, the company should take its time to grow and to keep the platform stable and maybe there will once be a Nextcloud-Talk app for macOS and Windows?

Switched from

[ownCloud](https://www.capterra.com/p/176602/ownCloud/)

ownCloud got stuck in a dead end while Nextcloud was on the move, pushing steadily forward with updates, information and flawlessy upgrade routines that ownCloud never managed to handle. It was just user-friendly from the very beginning and - instead of ownCloud - vital since the day it started.

### "Most comprehensive cloud software"

January 15, 2021

5.0

I have to say, where Microsoft tries hard with their one-drive and SharePoint, Nextcloud outperforms them completely, that is, if you want to switch to LibreOffice for your documents ;-). Since I installed Nextcloud on my own Apache server I have been working with it daily without any interruption. Updates are installed on the fly (as an administrator I've to push the button occasionally) without any downtime for other users. What I like the most is that I don't have to use an external cloud share. I can share project data securely without the fear that I don't know how /if cloud providers can/will access my data!

Pros

What I like the most is the complete integration of Nextcloud with other devices like mobile telephone and all OS-platforms. For an administrator Nextcloud provides a 'one button' check on all security aspects of your server. Next to that, Nextcloud provides very good documentation on to how to harden your server. Updates are very easy with the GUI, I had not one single issue since I use Nextcloud (approx 1 year). Occasionally you must complete some actions by the command line (the occ program) but that is also very well documented. The Nextcloud client both on Linux (Kubuntu) and Windows 10 works like a charm. On my Android phone I don't need google stuff, photos and contacts are directly synced with my Nextcloud. Due to the integrated e-mail client, separately to be activated, I don't need to run a web client on my server anymore (Roundcube), it saves administration work. It is very easy to set up a project environment to share with external users. I like the integration of draw.io, within the project, all project members can use draw.io from the browser for our project. Nextcloud is very precise on updates. This means that if you use the stable channel, as I do, you get only a new major version after a few .x releases of a new major release as to be sure that it is really stable. What can I write more, there are numerous applications that can be activated like Talk (video conferencing), calendar, activities on your drives and so on.

Cons

Hardening my Apache server was a bit difficult, although Nextcloud provides also quite good documentation for that issue.

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

I've read quite a few reviews on all kinds of cloud software before I took the adventure with Nextcloud.

### "Feature-rich Collaboration platform with great plug-in support"

August 3, 2022

Pros

Large number of available apps to extend functionality, such as Kanban Boards, web-based editing of diagrams and flowcharts, the Notes app and authentication providers, among others.

Cons

### "My Client Project Portal"

December 29, 2020

5.0

Nextcloud has exceed my expectations. The breadth of apps alone, all well integrated with one another, make it a must-have. But looking under the hood reveals a well-documented set of APIs, all consistently designed and many based on open standards. This is opening up new doors for us, making front-ends that integrate with other services, and using Nextcloud as the backend foundation for user management and more. All this is characteristic of my ever-deeper relationship with Nextcloud: it's great out of the box, nicely tailorable, and deeply modifiable.

Pros

I was initially impressed with how Nextcloud keeps all of my computers synced with far fewer conflict files than anything else I'd used. But the apps - oh the apps! Now I've come to rely on Nextcloud as the hub for managing my client projects. We can share and sync work files easily, but Dash, Calendar, and other tools installed with it makes a a must-have for small development shops like mine. And bonus points that I can tailor the branding with my company logo. Clients love it, I love it, and my colleagues are getting use to hearing me rave about it.

Cons

I hope to be able to find more US-based companies offering VPS hosting with Nextcloud preinstalled. There seem to be plenty in Europe, and if we can get more in the US I have some clients who would appreciate a turnkey, managed service.

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

Nextcloud's flexibility with folder syncing is hard to beat. But the apps made available through the Hub focus take it into a broader scope of use that other services just don't even really handle at all.

### "Die perfekte Cloud zum Selberhosten"

April 5, 2023

5.0

Alternatives considered

### "Easy to use collaboration tool"

February 10, 2020

3.0

We use this as an Intranet solution in our church. The most important functions are booking of locals and for filesharing between groups. We also use PicoCMS for the internal communication of news in the organisation. It works as expected but there has been some resistance to change. We plan to set up social login which should facilitate the use. Setting up and keeping your own server is of course an obstacle. You need some computer and server knowledge to keep this running. We use an external VPS-provider for the production server and another for backup. A local NAS-server for testing. This costs us about 7 EUR/month.

Pros

Easy to add new users Easy to upload and download files Possibility to read and edit documents also in the phone Possibility to add blogg-pages for intranet with the PicoCMS app Calendar app works very well Sync with laptop and desktop using the desktop client

Cons

The e-mail app is rudimentary The coupling between Contacts and E-mail app is incomplete Creating and editing documents and adding photos is possible in the phone but a bit slow The risk for conflicting versions if using desktop client, but this may be soved in version 18 as you can locck the file while editing You sometimes need to specifically check that the files are synced, but this also happens to me with other sync solutions (like Box Sync) The calendar app cannot be "swiped" or "scrolled" to the next week or month in the webb-browser. But this works with other optional calendar apps.

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

As far as we could see G-suite and Office365 works best if all users are from one single organization and e-mail addresses from the same domain, whereas our users are individuals with private e-mail addresses from many different providers. We also found the setup and administration of Nexcloud very easy - adding users, setting up groups-folders, giving permissions, sharing files to external users, allowing upload and download to external users.

### "The best and cheapest you can find for file storage and management"

July 11, 2022

5.0

I consider it to be an essential tool to consider when choosing a file/document and collaborative control and management platform.

Pros

The user interface is very intuitive. As well as the installation. We have made sure that our VPS have SSD storage, this greatly speeds up searches. We have about 30 clients and 10 employees working on a docker instance at the same time, and the resource consumption is hardly noticeable. You need to make sure you have well-optimized hardware. If you do this, you will love Nextcloud, because it will be as light as a feather. I love its ability to integrate with other collaboration apps. You can grow as far as the hardware allows.

Cons

I think for whom there is a solution. I wouldn't take or add anything to NextCloud for now. It has met all my requirements. Oh my God! Can be installed on a Raspberry Pi!

Pros

### "Best collaborative software I've used personally and for business"

March 1, 2022

5.0

Pros

First and foremost, I like the Transparency. I am relieved to know that my data is owned by MYSELF and my data doesn't travel across the advertisement companies to profit Tech Giants. Secondly, I love the UI elements of the software of how easy it is to get things done inside the applications, how few clicks it is to require to do such and such task, everything right on my face and all the useful applications you can install within the "app store" kinda thing to boost productive. Then, things like Collabora, Nextcloud Talk, News, Announcement Center is what bounds me within the software. I don't have to use different applications to communicate with my colleagues, don't need different application to sync my files, don't need different application to reed my atom feeds, etc. You know where I'm going. Nextcloud is the complete set of application. It has indeed replaced Dropbox, Google Drive, Zoom, Google RSS Reader, and tons of other software from my life.

Cons

While I like most of the things around Nextcloud. I hope it gets better with UI/UX. Sometimes the UI can be very non-friendly, glitches here and there and not very sleek experience. But, overall I'm happy with what I have.

### "An Unexpected Gem"

August 23, 2019

5.0

I installed Owncloud about 4 years ago, and moved to Nextcloud after the fork. Originally it was kind of a lark-- I had low expectations. Almost immediately I discovered it was a service I use every day, and would never want to do without. Since the fork I've been amazed at the continuing updates which bring better functionality and new features. I'm a committed privacy advocate, and Nextcloud gives me file sharing, contacts, and calendar, in an easy to use interface, all on my own server. Nextcloud Talk, with which I can video conference with my family and business clients, is just icing on the cake. If you haven't tried it, you should, it works amazingly well.

Pros

I'm a big privacy advocate, so it is important to me to keep control of my own files, contacts, and calendar, away from the prying eyes of Google and their ilk. The ability to quickly create a password protected folder, and share it with any client or customer, with full read-write capability, is a feature I've come to depend on, on a daily basis.

Cons

I miss the ability to link my Google Drive and Dropbox storage but, honestly, I didn't use it that much anyway (privacy issues). Less of a big deal anyway, since I've now been able to upgrade my home internet service, and I can run a second version of Nextcloud on a Raspberry Pi at home, and Federate the connection to my main VPS. That means I can connect as much storage as I need. In the past I've had trouble with some of the updates, but that hasn't been an issue for more than a year. I guess I really have no complaints.

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

None of the other products I've read about offer services I need, that I can't already get with Nextcloud. Why would I switch?

### "The best dropbox alternative out there"

January 9, 2023

5.0

The only issue I had was during the update process half a year ago, it was botched but didn't give any error and got stuck on showing version 22 was the latest until a few days ago where we realised the latest version was already 25. And we remedied that.

Pros

It's free! And since it's PHP, it's simple and quick and set up. Once done, it's effortless to use.

Cons

It's written in PHP and can quite easily become a security nightmare but as long as you do the necessary precautions and server hardening yourself, it should be fine.

I was disappointed because I wanted more than what I received.

Pros

My first impression of Nextcloud software was quite good. Initially, I used it as external storage. My initial impression of Nextcloud was positive.

Cons

I wanted to leverage its online collaboration capabilities to work with my team. However, I encountered recurring problems with the online edition, and it works poorly, leading to significant frustration.

### "Einfaches Filesharing - leicht gemacht"

November 20, 2023

5.0

Kompaktes Tool mit vielen Möglichkeiten.

Pros

### "NC as private cloud solution "

January 13, 2020

3.0

We have our critical data in our own controlled cloud environment. Our teams are spread all over the place in Germany, therefore NC is an excellent solution to support our collaboration.

Pros

Easy to setup and ease of use. Clients available on all plattforms (W10, OSX, iOS, Linux). Integratrion with Active Directory is quite essential for us. Easy to administrate. UNIX Platform. It is very robust!

Cons

That there is no integration with MS-SharePoint or MS-o365. This is really neccessary in todays world, although I am not a MS fan at all, but for business purposes this is really essential!

Alternatives considered

[ownCloud](https://www.capterra.com/p/176602/ownCloud/)[OneDrive](https://www.capterra.com/p/161304/OneDrive/)

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

We wanted to have full controll over our data, because we have not much trust to the big public-cloud providers. After comparing the options, NC provided exactly what we wanted. When we made the decision, the future of Onwcloud seemed to us quite uncertain. We use o365 for our office collaboration. NC provides our cloud-based file-storage and archive. Remark: please do not try to compete with the full o365 functionality (Teams, Exchange, Office etc.), from my point of view, this isn't worth the effort and it is unlikely thy you are going to win this race. A clever cooperation/integration would be something really usefull. This is a user speaking, I know the developers do not like this, but I can not see the point of ignoring the reality...

### "Nextcloud review"

December 9, 2019

4.0

Overall it has been good. There have been problems with upgrades but thankfully there have been others who upgraded before me and put tips on how to proceed. There should be one forum that deals with each upgrade by number and all solutions can be found there. If there is a solution, it should be marked as such so we can easily find the solutions we need.

Pros

I like that I have control over my data and can adjust things a bit for my needs.

Cons

Not all the things work right. I have serious problems with the client. I get many error messages about sync, favorites don't work, and it is not very intuitive for the average non-techie.

Reason for choosing Nextcloud

At first, I installed it to see how it would work. We went through the change over from Owncloud to Nextcloud and we were excited about seeing the changes that had hung around for a long time being addressed and the product getting better. After Nextcloud got going we switched and when it started looking better, we started committing to using it. At present we use Calenar, Files, Some News. I would like to use contacts but have had some issues connecting it. I would like to use the pictures folder for my mac/iphone photos but not sure how to make that all work together. A .pdf with instructions would be helpful.

Switched from

[Dropbox Paper](https://www.capterra.com/p/188157/Dropbox-Paper/)

the fees that Dropbox charged and it didn't have calendar, etc. which I use as well.
