Network Engineer Computer Hardware Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Incredible" February 11, 2020 5.0 Overall: Incredible Pros I manage about 10 NextCloud instances for different companies since Nextcloud was going his own way, away from OnwnCloud. Administrating NextCloud servers is just fun, with the integrated command line (occ) you can manage almost everything in an easy way. There are good manuals around if you run into any problems. The integrated system check (WEB-UI) also helps a lot to find miss configurations. As a user i like the nice designed web interface, and the possibilities you have (depending on the apps your admin has installed) Cons Configuring CODE was quite hard, i had a while to understand how the communication between the CODE and the Nextcloud instances where working. WEB-Dav is on some client's unstable, but this may has to do with the clients company network, more investigation from my side is pending on this. Some features i hope are comming somewhen: - Multiple logical disks, and NextCloud manages where to store data (increase storage size). - Clustering NextCloud, where NextCloud takes care of syncing storages. August 23, 2019 5.0 The sync workflow is seamless, and have nothing but great things to say about it, and the add-on plugins are excellent, and the ability to share files with customers and friends is most useful. It's excellent to be able to put aside tools like Dropbox and gain data freedom. Pros I like the ability for NC to seamlessly sync files between systems, allowing easy access to my files anywhere. Cons There are a few small features which would be really nice to have, such as automatic selective stub sync to workstations as OneDrive does, allowing you to have a dataset which appears local but only the used files are synced. A Synology NAS system has recently been added to the Nextcloud and syncronizes with each other to keep my data redundant. In my home network I have local access via the NAS and changes are immediately synchronized with Nextcloud via WebDAV. In combination with my web space provider, I also have a secure backup solution with me. Pros Nextcloud is easy to install, whether on a web space or your own server. Only a minimal basic knowledge is required to install a web application in PHP. An automatic script does the rest. Cons There could be more functions on the mobile app that are also available in the web version. Reason for choosing Nextcloud I want to take my data and systems into my own hands and have control over them as best I can and my level of knowledge allows. That is also the motto of Nextcloud. It is a great alternative to platforms like Google Drive or OneDrive. Pros NextCloud is very easy to set up and allows a great amount of customization. There are a ton of apps available to add to your configuration so you can set it up just the way that works for you. You can integrate Nextcloud login with your own website using OAuth. The customization is almost endless so you can set it up just how you like it. Cons The pricing can become complicated and quite expensive when using Nextcloud with some paid apps. Other than that I can't really complain about the functionality of the software, it has everything it should have. Information Technology Specialist Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Should be standard in many organizations" January 13, 2020 4.0 We have 3 Nextcloud Apache servers, as LXC containers, mounting CephFS for the data directory and connecting to a 3-node mysql cluster. It also uses LDAP authentication as well as a few local users. Very little extra work was required to make Nextcloud work in this clustered setup. Pros Free and open source software, runs on standard LAMP on Ubuntu LTS with no dependencies outside the Ubuntu repos. Allows LDAP and local users to coexist easily. Running multiple nextcloud instances behind a load balancer "just works" - all long-term state is stored in the data directory or in mysql. Cons The automatic installer and other tooling likes to write the config.php itself, and rewrite it when upgrading, making it a little annoying to manage with CM tools like SaltStack. But that's easy to work around. Cons The Collabora Is not there yet as reliable Google Docs alternative, but hey, it's getting there fast! Everything syncs with MY cloud, contacts, email, calendar, notes, files, photos, it all just works, even on my mobile. Pros Ease of setup and extensibility. There are so many pluggins available to make NextCloud to what you need it to do, and it's easy to setup. I was also able to get all my information out of Google and into NextCloud without a hitch. Cons During the install, I was never sure I was setting everything up just perfectly, and I felt I was on my own. Ended up following along with a video that made it very easy though Reason for choosing Nextcloud There's a guy on YouTube called "The Linux Gamer" and he recommended NextCloud. I am supporting the local business with this solution. It solves there security and ease of use. They like it better than the big competitors. Pros It the internet goes down. It auto recovers. Even if you don't think it is working. It is always there. Sharing the folder out and it works everytime. Cons Gallery is my least favorite. It needs to load faster. The thumbnails are there. I don't understand how it takes a minute to load. I wish there was an easier way to multi host instead of started a new vm for each business. I would like to see where I can tell the software the new business and it takes right off. You have full control. It loads all the config from a different directory. Also i wish scaling was easier. I am finding scaling is not that easy with out subscription. We get transparent access to our data and the operations we perform on it. This is very important from a privacy and security perspective and nextcloud wins hands down compared with Dropbox or Box. Pros Very secure. Own your data. Plugins are easy to add. Very easy to administer. Setup is easy. Ample and ever growing feature set. Privacy, security are prime features. Cons There have a few issues that come up sometimes but are similar to issues we had faced with Dropbox. Unlike Dropbox though, addition of plugins and the transparency with which nextcloud works made making changes to nextcloud to suit our needs very easy. It works as expected sharing files, but that is not the only usage. It has been extended by a thousand apps and can be customized to a great extent. We can store everyting internally in our company, so it is only limited by our resources. In our company we love it. It supports every platform we use (windows, mac, linux, ios, android). Pros There are a variety of ways to install Nextcloud (components, snaps, docker, pre-made vm's...), so installation is simple. Once installed, it is LOADED with great features, and very user-friendly! The community Support Forum is very active and responsive. We have even implemented Nextcloud as both on- and off-premises storage & collaboration solution to businesses as well as individuals. I have nothing but good things to say about Nextcloud! Cons I wish I had discovered it sooner! The first manual install to a LAMP stack was a bit of a learning curve. But, the community Support Forum was very understanding, forgiving, and helped out a GREAT deal. August 24, 2019 5.0 I have been able to work on writing and editing without regard to where I am, and access my files on the road after a hard drive failure with basically no lost time. My clients love getting secure links to their work without worrying about intellectual properties issues with other cloud providers. Overall, Nextcloud has provided a sense of security and has prevented me from losing work as I travel from home to office to business trip. Pros The best thing about this software is that file synchronization works flawlessly. My documents and other work are available to me on all of my computers and from the Web anywhere in the world. I can share files or whole folders with friends and clients, and the apps let me edit online, organize my tasks, read my email on the go, and much, much more. Cons The documentation for manual installation is a little sparse, although it's only really necessary to refer to one other project to complete installation. And there are tons of additional functionality to choose from (provided by Nextcloud itself and third party software developers). One thing worked out to be particularly useful: the integration with the Nextcloud provided meeting software Talk (although it works only for small meetings out of the box. For larger ones additional, but still free, software is needed). Cons There are really tons of third party apps to choose to install. And it is really tempting to add them. But this constitutes a weakness at the same time, because no one guarantees you that these apps will work with the next update of the software. And I've seen it in the past months that some apps I'd install stopped working with the next update. This is no problem of Nextcloud itself. They do not force you to install any of the third party apps. My advice would be to install only apps that have been along a long time and provide regular updates. It does what i says plus a lot more with little to no interaction from the administer (me). We host our own instance so we have it set up the way we want, and, "We know where our data is". Cons It is a bit tricky to be hosted in a shared host environment not having a great deal of access ie. sudo. We seem to manage though. I used to run my own server to provide NAS services. Now I run Nextcloud on a $35 Raspberry PI with a Western Digital portable external hard drive. Nextcloud is the magic that makes it all happen. Nextcloud has a vibrant user community and uses all FOSS components. Best part? Nextcloud has both desktop and mobile clients. Pros It's FOSS and it's cool! Easy to use, supports multiple accounts, quotas, and leverages your web browser. Cons It's hard to find something not to like about Nextcloud. Maybe the fact that if you like to tinker you can damage the NAS database. But that's half the fun, too! Reason for choosing Nextcloud Nextcloud is a no-brainer. Free, cool, and hip! The UI is always improving and there is client software for all platforms. It works fine on my Windows, Mac and Android phones. Cons The software is slow, very slow. I host it on a 32 cores, 128 Gb of Ram server, and 12 HDDs, with only 3 users. The performance issue is most likely due to the need to generate thumbnails which is indeed not very fast. However, you can pre-generate them, which will make loading them nearly instantaneously. I wish more of the apps/plugins were usable in the mobile app. Sometimes I run across occasional sync conflicts with the desktop apps, which can be resolved, but it could be a smoother and more intuitive process to fix.
