January 14, 2020 5.0 Pros NextCloud is compatible with a variety of storage backends from local storage to NAS or object storage. It's a completely open source solution that can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud. The versatility of NextCloud means that it can be tailored to meet virtually any compliance requirement governing data protection, cybersecurity, and backups. The core developers based in Germany, have a privacy-oriented ethos that reflects the strong attitudes towards data protection in Europe. Cons The groupware apps such as Mail, Calendar, and Contacts that ship with NextCloud are basic in functionality. Fortunately, there are over 200+ apps to choose from in the NextCloud app store, allowing integration with more feature rich alternatives such as Afterlogic or Rainloop Webmail. The relative immaturity of the end-to-end encryption module built into NextCloud makes it preferable to use lower level alternatives such as LUKS for at-rest encryption, as opposed to application level encryption. Director Computer Software Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Reliable, professional, flexible" December 9, 2019 5.0 As a single-person business it's enabled me to get access to all my important information wherever I am. I've also implemented it for an office of a dozen staff; it's enabled them to work remotely in a much easier way than using VPM (our previous solution) - e.g. user administration is now done by a non-technical staff admin with a point and click interface. Pros It's been rock solid and upgrades have been mostly unproblematic (at first I was updating too early, with some plugins lagging behind, but then I switched to a different release chanel). The wide variety of access methods (webdav, access over website, the desktop and phone sync clients, API) have all lent themselves to different solutions. As the files are stored as normal files it makes backing up easy (e.g. with rsync) The recently added Google-doc-like multi-simultaneous-editors functionality for text documents (MarkDown) is brilliant. Cons Despite Microsoft inventing WebDav, their implementation is buggy with Windows 10 users having to re-log in every session. The mobile (Android) sync client could be improved. We use several shared areas for different groups of people (ie game assets and files, legal files and marketing resources) Pros The software is free to use Everything is simple to setup through the browser There are mobile and desktop clients so files can be accessed on any device and synced to a folder on your PC for easier access It is easy to share files with other people Cons There are normally 1-5 hidden files of metadata on the root directory of each user's area - this can be annoying if you can see hidden files on your computer It would be good to have better integration with Microsoft Office, including having NextCloud as a shared area that you can save directly to (both on PC and mobile) A special section in File Explorer is not setup like OneDrive or Dropbox - instead it syncs to a folder (although this can be pinned to quick access) Review Source Response from Nextcloud October 13, 2018 Hi Joshua! I was so blown away, that I'm now planning to offer a hosting service centered around Nextcloud. Pros I love that Nextcloud is open source. I love the philosophy of the Nextcloud company as it works to serve and better humanity by making this amazing software available for anyone to download and use. The file syncing, the ability to integrate many 3rd party networking/storage, the chat/talk communication programs, the SECURITY and privacy, the Deck Kanban app, the mail app, music playing app, and the intuitive structure of the file storage console, and other apps and especially the ability to create your own apps and customize the core app---all combined, this app is wonderful. Cons The only thing I can say in this regard is that the core team perhaps could take more measures to inform 3rd party app developers of breaking changes that might arise when new versions are released. Enforces / reminds you to use safe settings. Easy for users as well. Both in the client and the web based viewer. We only use the file storage system and this is very stable and reliable. The mobile app is already good and well integrated into the OSes And it's open source :) Cons The desktop is client sometimes slow and hogging users CPUs when transferring many files. Pros Nextcloud has many features that are all free to use as long as you host them on your own server or even on a local computer. From hosting files and photos, do handling your kanban or contacts, anything you have on a big tech company can be transfer to Nextcloud and you win by having a full privacy. Cons As the software is immense, every parts are not maintained and improved at the same rate. So for some apps there are missing features that would be useful. It is often slower than the other big tech services but mostly depending on your own hosting power. Professionally I have always been really pleased with how easy it is to deploy on different machines and overall how straight-forward everthing is. A no-brainer for every small company or organisation. Pros First: it's a private cloud which should be a serious argument for anyone placing confidental data in the cloud. Second: it just works like a charme for sharing files, calendars and addresses using some DAV-standard. Third: much effort is put into the product to enhance it with lots of collaboration features. Cons Search is poor in the sense that there is no integrated setup for this. Integration of Elasticsearch is described, but its way to complicated. Should be integrated as optional enhancement into regular setup procedures. A wiki may be to much to ask for, but that's what we realized by another product. They like that files are synced to their pc for offline access, versioning in case something happened to a file. Pros A free tier is offered with a large host of features that you won't get on the hosted competiton (Dropbox) except in the higher tiers. Love the versioning features as well as sharing files. Cons Upgrading can be difficult although it has come a long way since the split from OwnCloud. We use it with Collabora Online and set up our own sharing, documenting and backup platform in only a few days, been using it without issues since.
