Systems Administrator Education Management Used the software for: 2+ years ### "NextCloud as Private Cloud Storage" November 5, 2020 5.0 NextCloud has done exactly what we've needed it to: provided an easy, open source way to run our own private cloud for storage of data we don't want to put in Google Drive. Easy to use, great desktop apps, lots of functionality (near parity with other cloud apps). It does what we need it to do, and I haven't had any issues with it. Pros The ease of deployment of NextCloud (I'm using a Snap container) is ridiculously easy. The interface for a free and open source app is amazing! I love the ability to customize the login screen and it integrates well with Active Directory. It's easy to setup once installed as well. The Windows and Mac apps work like a champ. Cons Some of the functionality I'm used to in OneDrive or Google Drive (right-clicks and other minor UI issues) doesn't exist in NC. It's a mostly Web 2.0 app, but a few changes would make it almost perfect. It has done everything I have asked of it but I am still looking to see what else I can do. Looking forward to rolling this platform out my my engineering team. It is user-friendly considering its ease of use and it is a combination of google drive and whatsapp applications. It is easy to install and use. You can host your server wherever you want. Message delivery times are provided with instant notification. Application entries are made with two factor authentication system. Cons What I see lacking is that it has little graphical content. October 7, 2020 5.0 Nextcloud has been very stable and reliable for hosting PIM data and can be used for business CRM use and other applications. It is a great platform. Pros Private and secure storage of your personal data can be hosted on a number of virtualization and hosting platforms and supports a variety of web apps and functionality. Cons Supported web apps have been changing significantly with new releases and requires migrating data to new apps. Having only few employes, it is too small for a big/ expensive cloud. Also, sometime working with big files, is better to have the server on our local area network (also is good that we have full control on our (clients) data). Nextcloud is perfect for us. Pros Sync folders/ files between several devices. Sharing /link sharing/ file drop - works like a charm. Cons Mail app. Not friendly, have bugs. Except it's also like Google Apps that you control. Or MS365. Or... And entirely brandable, for use with clients. Essentially the app approach and open ethos (source/development/community) allows both a great core technology and infinite extendability. It's safe for my clients, it's also powerful enough to allow hundred people looking at my pictures at the same time on a self hosted server. I like the apps, the file management between my PCs, collabora editing ... Cons The only thing I would regret is that the gallery app which is absolutely perfect for my use have been abandoned for a new app which don't fit as the older one. We are able to share files now in ways that were never possible when they were simply on NFS/CIFS file shares. The automatic versioning is wonderful it has saved us more than once when someone made changes they needed to revert to a file. Pros All the features of Dropbox on your own server. You can run your own cloud at home with this software. No longer do you need to trust your files to computers that are under someone else's control. You can have privacy and convenience too. They have clients that work really well for Linux, Mac, Windows, Android and iOS so you can sync files all over the place and on all of your devices. They have a very active development community and a growing marketplace of add-on apps that you can install in your installation to expand functionality. Cons Initial setup can be a little complex at first. Support is based mostly on forums and google searches, but there is a paid subscription service for Enterprise support. Pros A trustworthy, robust framework to host your own data. Pretty nice sync client that allows to selectively sync instead of an all-or-nothing approach. Cons Inconsistencies with handling of last-modified dates. Weird behavior when uploading folders via browser (directory hierarchy not preserved). Desktop client UX not great... Sales Marketing and Advertising Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Setup your own personal cloud on your home network" December 5, 2018 5.0 The initial set up of the linux system and th nextcloud install/ upgrade required quite some time and a steep learning curve. But now I am extremely happy with this software and the accompanying iOS applications. It allows me to automatically upload all my photos to the cloud, similar to the native iOS iCloud app. All my data, music, photos, are save on my personal server. Pros I was able to ditch monthly fees for iTunes Match and iCloud monthly storage fees by switching to Nextcloud. Privacy concerns lead me to abandon Microsoft/Apple/Amazon/Google/Dropbox cloud drives in favor of Nextcloud who can do it all. Cons It takes some initial effort if you want to build your own webserver on an old PC, installing linux, etc. but its doable for non-linux people. Review Source CM Charilaos M. I use Nextcloud for easy automatic file uploads from mobile devices. I use Nextcloud for sharing folders via E-Mail-Links and between users. Pros Nextcloud is very easy to install and set up. The documentation is very good. It is easy to maintain and gives good security tips. Cons It was hard to select between Nextcloud and Owncloud. I have already encouraged local individuals and small businesses to try it out. It's hard to find any organisation which would not immediately benefit from NCs facilities out of the box, especially those companies faced with how best to manage its people working from home. Pros File synchronisation between server and client. Integrated Calendars, Contacts, and Wordprocessing: these are the fundamentals which provide all the basics for any-sized organisation. A perfect base on which to build. Cons Current lack of comprehensive backup and restore capability at user-level. All implementations essentially require a high level of technical support in the background to keep the show on the road. Reason for choosing Nextcloud NextCloud clearly stands in a class of its own and I know of no comparable product offering NCs range of online services and integrated applications. In my view, there's simply no contest. I personally have adopted NC in my own Company for its special properties contributing significantly to the profession of Business Continuity Management.
