### "Fastracking the Web Development process"

August 20, 2025

5.0

I ran a web hosting company for over 10 years and have created hundreds of websites using Joomla's framework.

Pros

Joomla allows the web development process to be jumpstarted by using recycleable framework that can be customized to suit your needs.

Cons

Having to debug module, plugins, and add-ons for issues after updating Joomla to a new version. Checking over all the web applications resources for vulnerabilities.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Joomla

### "Joomla 6 so much better than prior version"

May 4, 2026

5.0

Pros

We use Joomla across both internal and external sites, and it’s been a very solid platform for that. What stands out most is the flexibility—you can build pretty much anything you need without fighting the system. The extension ecosystem is a big plus. There’s usually a third-party solution available for what we need, and it’s easy to plug in functionality without reinventing the wheel. That’s saved us a lot of development time over the years. It’s also modular in a way that works well for an IT team. You can structure things cleanly, scale sites as needed, and maintain consistency across multiple environments without a lot of overhead.

Cons

The biggest drawback is that it can be a bit heavier to manage compared to simpler CMS platforms. There’s a learning curve, especially for non-technical users, and even basic changes can require some familiarity with how Joomla structures things. Extension quality can also vary. While the ecosystem is a strength, not all third-party plugins are maintained equally, so you have to be selective and stay on top of updates to avoid issues. Upgrades between major versions have improved, but they can still require planning and testing, especially if you rely on multiple extensions. It’s not a “set it and forget it” platform—you need to actively manage it to keep everything running smoothly.

### "Getting long in the tooth"

November 27, 2024

3.0

I've used Joomla for several projects over multiple years. At this point, I use it out of familiarity rather than preference. It's too complex to be suited to building a small business website. Perhaps it's a best fit for a publication of some sort. Today, there are so many quicker and simpler ways to build most website needs, I feel like it might be a bit of a dinosaur.

Pros

PHP based. Large community of users. Reputation for security.

Cons

Wild west of plug-in vendors. Lack of built-in page creation model. Painful transition from 3.x

### "Seems to have stoped in time"

February 25, 2024

Pros

Up to 12 years ago I used Joomla a lot for many websites and back then it was very intuitive, easy to use and fairly complete, compared to what competitors offered

Cons

Nowadays this seems to have droped a lot in quality, functionality, simplicity, easy of use, etc. Other platforms have grown a lot better like WordPress, Prestashop among others, and Joomla simply seem to have lots the magic that once had

### "Joomla a tool for intermediate website management"

December 16, 2021

4.0

Joomla has helped us to rapidly create plain websites, informative websites in a real quick way. Joomla allows us to have blogs that are shareable and easy to use across collaborators This option offers flexibility and is user-friendly for those that are not experts in coding.

Pros

Joomla is a cool tool for beginners but also for intermediate users. What I liked more was. - The correct division of the elements available for manipulation (components, modules, templates) - The UI is good and allows you a friendly usability

Cons

Joomla could consider being more flexible when an upgrade is required. I understand there are some dependencies on the versions of external software like PHP or MySQL, but the support sometimes is not clear and has generated some users to leave Joomla and look for other opportunities.

### "A Tough CMS that Could Be Better"

March 2, 2021

3.0

Joomla is yet another CMS for me though, even if it was more or less an exploration to find a better application within its category. Overall, it's a tough one and I will need a passionate mindset to dive deeper into this software.

Pros

Joomla is becoming very useful for e-commerce solutions, considering the powerful extensions that are being built for it these days. And of course, as it is an open-source application it makes it easy to customize and extend to one's need. Not to forget it's also free too.

Cons

Joomla didn't have much usability support compared to major players like WordPress and Drupal. Considering the fact that there were fewer extensions available to improve functionalities and most available ones were paid. So it wasn't a friendly application to explore then.

Reason for choosing Joomla

Adobe wasn't extensible, so I had to look out for something that could fit my need. Secondly, Adobe Dreamweaver was proprietary, so I needed to stay clear for that moment.

Switched from

[Drupal](https://www.capterra.com/p/119594/Drupal/)[WordPress](https://www.capterra.com/p/131687/WordPress/)

I didn't really switch in the true sense, I was just exploring to see if I could get something better than what I got with both apps, as mentioned.

### "A Content Management System for building websites"

December 29, 2019

5.0

I used Joomla to build my website. It was relatively easy to get started with. Joomla works with extensions and templates which allows them to be easily customisable. Joomla saved me the cost of having to outsource my website design to a website developer.

Pros

Joomla is a Content Management System (CMS) that can be used to build websites. The things I like about Joomla are: 1. Ability to build a website with no technical knowledge required: The first time I worked on Joomla, I didn't know how to write the programming languages on which Joomla was built, but I was still able to build a website with it using available Joomla templates and extensions. 2. Easy learning curve: I learnt everything I needed to get started with Joomla, and also built my first Joomla website in one day. There are available YouTube tutorials, and plog posts on the internet that can help one to get going with Joomla. 3. Free domain name and hosting: Joomla provides users the option of using Joomla customised domain names for their websites, and also provides them with free hosting. I leveraged Joomla's free domain name and free hosting to build my first Joomla website. 4. Easy to customise: Joomla is very easy to customise. Joomla works with templates and extensions. The templates helps someone to decide how his/her Joomla website will look like, while the extension helps someone to add some functionalities to his/her website. 5. Security: Joomla constantly updates their CMS to provide security patches, and also to keep it from the attack of viruses. This increases the level of confidence with Joomla.

Cons

Joomla is an awesome CMS, but that is not without its cons. The cons of Joomla are: 1. Despite the fact that Joomla is easy to learn, it's learning curve is more complex than that of other CMSs like WordPress, Wix, and Weebly. 2. Poor layout: For me, the outlook of a website designed with Joomla seems to be less elegant than that designed with other CMSs like WordPress and Wix. These are the two cons I can point out with Joomla.

### "Flexible and SEO friendly Content Management System"

February 15, 2021

4.0

I have been working with Joomla CMS for many years and it is one of the strongest and oldest free and open source CMS in the world and it is one of the best in terms of security, technology and simplicity and I’ve use Joomla for some website cases that have special features.

Pros

It's open source and free! It supported by volunteer community for many years and it's free forever.

Cons

Joomla template design could be more beautiful and with more features. In appearance, it has fewer molds than other competitors and should invest more in the appearance and design of the UI.

### "Joomla has a great wide range of capabilities and features"

January 27, 2025

5.0

Once you become more familiar with the user interface it became easier to create the functions needed for my website.

Pros

Joomla is robust in it’s flexibility for a wide range of uses for developing even complex websites. If you are looking for a wide range of capabilities this is great software choice.

Cons

Using Joomla requires having a stronger background in knowing how to modify the site’s structure and development so there is a little more of a learning curve.

### "Joomla my favourite CMS to use"

July 24, 2021

4.0

Overall I love Joomla, been using it for over 10 years I think it version 1.3 or 1.4 I started off with back then and stuck with it all the way through as other CMS systems just didn't seem as user friendly when I tried them. I can create nice websites that do what I need, just wish there was more help on making them great in the eyes of Google to pass the page speed and core web vitals tests etc

Pros

It has to be that it works logically and makes sense, if there is a problem you can usually work out what has caused it and fixed it without much of a problem. If you do get stuck then there are usually places where you can find answers to your problems online

Cons

When coming to technical SEO issues for things like increasing page speed, removing unused Java script & CSS etc most of the tutorials online seem to be focused more on different CMS users like WP etc, it would be great if Joomla did actually have some paid employees who could create useful guides for non coders who aren't experts that could make some walk through guides so the average user could make their own websites run like experts sites. I know Joomla is an open source software, but I wouldn't mind paying a small fee when I set up a new website to contribute to having some full time paid staff who could provide more documentation and training for Joomla, as opposed to having to paid large fees to experts as that's not really in my budget.

Alternatives considered

[Drupal](https://www.capterra.com/p/119594/Drupal/)[WordPress](https://www.capterra.com/p/131687/WordPress/)

Reason for choosing Joomla

I tried Wordpress and found it very frustrating and unintuitive, then Drupal I didn't actually try, read a few reviews and decided to go with Joomla. Although I did see quite a few impressive websites that had been made on Drupal. Another thing that turned me off Wordpress was that I started to notice that most of the WordPress sites I was coming across seemed to be very very similar and so didn't really think that this would help my sites to stand out. Joomla seemed to have lots of very different styles of website which made it seem a lot more flexible.

### "Want to build a website now? Use Joomla!"

July 1, 2021

5.0

Jommla is a web content management system that helped me a lot in my early career as a web designer, in publishing and managing web content, mainly because I had little knowledge on the subject at the time. Used for online stores, corporate blogs, news portals, service catalogs, among other formats. It is a CMS that does not require in-depth programming knowledge. With little knowledge of HTML and CSS, a lot of cool stuff can be done. It has many plugins and components that complement and facilitate the construction of online content. I am so grateful for all he has given me.

Pros

Jommla is easy to manage content online and solves everything without programming. There are many tutorials on youtube and communities that help each other to resolve any difficulties that may arise when developing web projects.

Cons

It could have more native functions. There are endless possibilities, but they have to be added through components, modules and plugins.

Alternatives considered

[WordPress](https://www.capterra.com/p/131687/WordPress/)

Reason for choosing Joomla

I chose joomla for its ease of use and for not needing programming knowledge. In addition there are many tutorials on youtube where other users teach you how to use and configure very easily.

### "If you want a powerful portal this is the option..."

July 14, 2022

5.0

Excellent experience in my projects. The power, scalability and stability of Joomla really allowed me to create very professional portals and sites. If you have an idea in your mind of how you want your site to work, Joomla allows you to make it a reality in a very concrete way, due to the great features it has. There is also a very active community, and also a lot of documentation if you need it.

Pros

Scalability Powerful Good bookstores and active community Trajectory, prestige and reliability stable and secure Allows larger and more complex projects

Cons

It requires a certain learning curve, but it is worth it If you are not in a large-scale project, sometimes you could get a little lost among the many possibilities it offers in terms of the extensions it offers Customization can be a bit hard if you don't have experience

Alternatives considered

[Moodle](https://www.capterra.com/p/80691/Moodle/)

Reason for choosing Joomla

Drupal had a lot of instability, little customization for people with little design knowledge, and in general I felt that I was limited when it came to creating a site or portal according to my needs. On the other hand it was unnecessarily complex in some areas of the dashboard

Switched from

### "Top 3 CMS"

June 7, 2022

4.0

1\. Joomla is both users friendly and smart phones friendly, and easy to build; 2. For the non-programmers, Joomla is a "logic module", they can learn by doing; 3. Joomla is a free CMS, so if you build a simple small or middle-size website, you pay only domain fee and server fee. But since 2019, the prices of almost all apps, themes which are used on Joomla, have increased 40% to 150%.

Pros

As a CMS, Joomla is more powerful than WordPress (which originally is a blog platform), Joomla can be used on the broader fields, I used it to build hunting site, Chinese acupuncture site, a blog site, several different kinds of eCommerce sites. Joomla is more easy to build sites and make SEO.

Cons

1\. It is little bit hard to add ads such as Google ads (need 3 steps); 2. it has only limited layout selections; if you hope to build different layout design, you must be a good php programmer; 3. If you want to change/modify the original designs, such as change homepage's background color, or make the homepage broaden, or delete the top space of the homepage, you MUST access the php program to modify.

Reason for choosing Joomla

For small to middle-size websites, Joomla has enough functions and many different apps, themes and so on.

### "Why you should check out Joomla!"

February 14, 2022

5.0

I am primarily using Joomla to post content onto my families business site. This happens on a daily basis and all the generations are taking part in it. As well as I am concerned it is pretty easy to learn since some of our business partners are seniors and aren't fond of dealing with most software.

Pros

Most impactful features about Joomla have to do with the well designed interface. It's logical and straightforward workflow even enables my family co-workers who are seniors to get around and get the work done.

Cons

Only con I can think of is Video publishing. It got updated with several patches but still imbedding some videos into articles still ceases to fail.

### "I will keep using Joomla and can't recommend enough"

April 14, 2019

5.0

I was able to collaborate on design changes to our corporate website with my fellow designers and developers, and overall the experience of editing, designing, previewing, and publishing content was at first a little time consuming to follow all the steps, but eventually was so easy to follow time and time again. It is a tool that myself and my colleagues continue to turn to when we have web development tasks that need to be completed and with new features continuing to be pushed out, it's never been a better time to learn how to use and train others on the program as well.

Pros

I found Joomla to be a great tool that was used as the back end engine of our customer facing website. As someone with some technical skills, I was able to learn how to use the editing tools pretty quickly, I learned how to be a user administrator and set up permissions for our customer portal to allow ease of access for customer materials - the overall set up of these features was a very stress free process.

Cons

Depending on how you've decided to use this content management tool, the process of upgrading certain features and customizing the back end user interface can be challenging when the needs arise. I find the normal challenges that I've found with similar content management tools, however there is little that I dislike from a back end user perspective.

### "Joomla for Perfect web site devolpment tool"

August 10, 2020

Best way to expressing and perform search engine optimization, mostly used for social media marketing, Classic UI and more configurable items make it useful, much secured and convenient working with server side, Lesser extensions are available to add more feature, integrated perfectly with social media like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube perfectl.

Pros

Much secured and comprehensive content management system that supports wide range of websites, discussion, introduction, with personal messaging service, user management, role defining is fully covered including access to pages, detailed pages and customization can be done accordingly to enhanced added feature, direct access and working with server through its configuration.

Cons

Much complicated and hidden type setting, hard to customize it, due to complexity and difficult customization comparatively lesser plugins, extensions are available, so it needs more and more customization and work if you did not found your required features in prebuilt in extension.

### "Joomla makes web design and content management a breeze"

August 19, 2023

5.0

Joomla makes it easy to build professional and responsive websites. It offers many features, templates, and extensions, making work easier. Since many people use it, you can always get help from third party users. You can also get videos describing how to solve any challenges you may encounter.

Pros

I like Joomla because it provides many templates and extensions to create the website our clients want. You can choose the extensions you need whether you want a simple site or a complex online store that would otherwise take time to build. It has many users so I do not have to contact the support when I need help because there are many tutorials and online forums discussing about it.

Cons

Using too many extensions affect the loading speed of the website. I only use the necessary extensions to avoid this problem. I found the interface overwhelming before I got the hang of it. The learning curve is longer than that of competitor such as WordPress.

### "Joomla review"

April 10, 2023

4.0

Pros

Joomla is an excellent open source content management system that is perfect for creating websites, blogs, and online stores. It is simple to use, has a vast selection of features, and is highly customizable, making it very flexible. You can use it to build any sort of website, from a small personal blog to a large corporate website. It is also very extensible, offering hundreds of third-party extensions that can be used to add further features.

Cons

Joomla has some disadvantages, such as difficulty in modification and extension, especially for those with limited knowledge in coding. It can also be slow and resource-intensive, particularly on shared hosting plans. Additionally, there is an absence of modern visual design elements, as well as incompatibility with more recent technologies like HTML5 and CSS3.

At the beginning, Joomla was good for the website development side of my business. However, I had issues at times, especially the template limitations.

Pros

It allowed me in the beginning of my business to have customers customize their templates and it did not take long time to implement their websites.

Cons

We had a lot of problems using templates for Joomla, and there were times when the CMS end-user interface would stop working. It was hard to fix, and we would have to restore backups in many situations.

### "The Potential to Grow"

March 9, 2018

5.0

I build sites for myself and clients using this platform.

Pros

Very powerful tools to restrict and grant access to users and admins built-in. I find it more secure then Wordpress, which is probably due to Wordpress' popularity, however, there are a lot of security features built-in. Very active community and the plugins are vetted regularly that are posted on their website. Joomla websites are very versatile in what they can be used for and can grow as you need them. They keep a regular update schedule and keep the community updated .

Cons

It can be a little confusing whether the content is coming from an article, component or a module. They don't handle canonical links very well and links are all menu based (however that can be a positive because it's easy to dictate what you'd like for a URL). Media Manager is a bit cumbersome and hopefully, version 4 will address a lot of the issues (such as replacing images).

### "An Open Source Classic- but not for everyone"

In my opinion, Joomla! is still a tool for geeks, who prefer functionality over aesthetics. If you want to exercise full control over your website, from the hosting to the design, this is one of the best choices on the market. Your site can easily be adapted and expanded thanks to a myriad of plugins or extensions. I personally prefer giving up control to have less hassle with the developing part, and prefer a smoother look.

Pros

I started using Joomla! 3.1 when I did a course on Open Source Systems whilst unemployed. We were able to choose between Wordpress and Joomla!- and I chose Joomla! because I was already using Blogger, and knew that WP was somewhat similar. I liked the fact that the backend was fairly easy to use for the actual writing part- optimal for beginners. This was similar to what I was used at writing blogposts. I liked that there are many plugins available that integrate smoothly- which tends to be a big problem in Wordpress (many bugs).

Cons

For a fair beginner, setting up a server was rather challenging. Also, I am a bit of a design geek- and the "look" of the platform (something I know doesn't deter most programmers) hurt my taste back then. I noticed that this has since improved with version 4, and I am aware that I am being superficial here, and probably not part of the target group- who have different priorities, like usability, extendability, speed etc.

### "Joomla - One of the best Content Management Systems!"

May 5, 2022

5.0

I've built several sites with Joomla and it's able to provide the full functionality that my clients expect ,thanks to various templates, extensions and plugins that can be integrated.

Pros

Free and open source is certainly an advantage. But on the technical side, its gives you better control over your website. I also like that it supports a wide range of databases, Multi-Lingual Support and very good security.

Cons

Compared to similar products on the market, it's a bit more complex with respect to the learning curve and requires patience and proper research to ease into it.

Reason for choosing Joomla

It's easier and quicker to build sites
