As a non-programmer, I was able to make cool applications for my personal and hobby use. Now as a developer it is my number one tool of choice for creating business automation software. Pros FileMaker is a very versatile database application. Scripts are written in English and anyone can write them after some practice. Now you can even use JASON and Tableau APIs. You can easily set up a FileMaker server in AWS Most of the built in themes look good and professional; so even if you aren't a graphic designer your layouts can look good. Cons It does take a little time to get up and running. Having someone on staff who knows a thing or two (even the basics) about FileMaker will help. I have been able to create databases on my own without any technical knowhow! It has also helped streamline so many business practices it is crazy! Pros I suggest and purchase this software for our research teams that need a database to track projects, supplies, responsibilities and other facets of their research centers that do not warrant a sql database or the reporting issues that go with that. They can easily customize the interface, prioritizing what they think is most important. Cons It can get expensive when you are ramping it up for a growing department. Adding dozens of users and a FileMaker Server in a secure on-premise standup is a budgetary consideration for anyone, and therefore usually delayed until the monies become available. Anytime there was a problem, IT was able to contact and resolve it with customer support within an hour or less. Pros Once you were properly trained, the basic file maker go was easy to use. The background of it was extensive and allowed for a smooth operation. Cons I was told it was easy to mess up everything if I clicked on the wrong thing, so I was constantly worried I would ruin something. But I don't know if that's actually true. If the database is already built by someone else well, it's easy to use, but building them is really tough. Cons Filemaker is a clunky, difficult to use, out of date database system. It's tough to get any real help outside of finding super nice people on forums.
