As the manager The automation between Github ensures new source (in our case, English) text flows into Crowdin. I like being able to view Activity as a manager of the content team, and also to keep an eye on our external translators. The translation memory saves us a lot of time (and sometimes money). It's getting better and better, but I feel it needs some UI love Pros Great value for money. I like that there are lots of integrations. Fast customer service in terms of requesting help - support team are quick and provide articles and step by steps in rea time. Cons I don't find the user interface very intuitive. I often have to read an article or google something to find it. Lacking an overall visibility of activity (for example, new strings added) at a high level without going into each individual project. Loading time in larger project is very slow, particularly when viewing more than one language at a time. I find it disappointing that I cannot add a style guideline without increasing to the Enterprise account. While I like to help to contribute to an open source chess site, all the other systems and functions of Crowdin like Tasks, TM,MT, Glossaries are a waste of time. Pros I like the most the automatic mail notifications when new translations are available. This way I never miss any new translations. I even had the opportunity to speak to the support team sometimes, and they were very friendly and easy to talk to. Pros There are several things I love about Crowdin. For one, over the 8+ years I've been using the platform, I've always found it's amazing how easy it is to collaborate with other translators across multiple projects via the discussions tab on each string. Whenever there's something going on, I receive an e-mail about it, and I can focus on getting things resolved. Fast and easy. I come from a software developer's perspective, and I have used Crowdin to create and manage projects (thanks to Crowdin's amazing policy of free projects for open-source initiatives). In this position, you're often faced with the challenge of introducing your user base and collaborators to the platform where they will be handling translations, and I can assure you that Crowdin has been by far the easiest and most intuitive space for regular users, who may not have any background whatsoever in localisation, to contribute their grain of sand towards translating a project. Pretty much every language on earth is supported, and if the language you want isn't there, the Crowdin team can evaluate whether it'd be feasible to add it to the main platform. Also speaking from the perspective of a project owner rather than a translator, integrating Crowdin with my projects using their Git widgets functionality has been an absolute relief. All the effort we had to put into maintaining translations via static files and complicated systems is gone, and we can focus on building software whilst our user base translates it! One could write a small book or documentation page with a few sections with everything good about Crowdin, so I would simply advice anybody who hasn't tried it before to simply go ahead and sign up! If you feel like translating is something you're interested in, then go ahead and contribute to a project you find interesting. I for one started using Crowdin because of Minecraft and haven't stopped since! Overall I think Crowdin has made many good decisions in time, and they continue to strive as probably the #1 localisation platform. Cons There are two specific things I dislike about Crowdin: 1. The overall restyling of the platform that was implemented some years ago. Icons and text borders started to become roundish; things were de-centred for no apparent reason... just, why? You could have kept it perfect! 2. The removal of national flags. To me as a translator and proofreader, this change has made the experience of finding a language incredibly painful. Now imagine how it looks for new contributors who see the project page for the first time and see a bunch of grey flags with random letters all over them... this really discourages people who may have otherwise stayed, having clicked on their own country's flag to take a peek... Fast, reliable, and user-friendly, not to mention the fact that workflow and its interface are consistent regardless of what platform you are on (PC, Mac, or portable Android and Apple devices). Taking care of urgent requests on your mobile device while you are away from the office is just magic, and Crowdin is at the top of the game in this area. It’s a solid tool with useful features, especially around AI translations and translation memory. It’s not perfect, but it works well for what we need. Pros I like that Crowdin lets you use different AI translation providers like DeepL and Google. Different tools work better for different languages, so having that flexibility is really helpful. It makes it easier to get strong first drafts. The translation memory is also a big plus. It saves time and keeps wording consistent across the product, especially for repeated terms. Cons The UI is okay, but it can feel a bit convoluted at times. It’s not always obvious where things sit or which setting you need. From what I’ve heard from developers, adding and managing keys can also feel quite clunky. It’s a bit frustrating that keys have to be merged into master before they’re available, instead of being live straight away. That can slow things down. Once I went about localising my own projects, I started using Crowdin without any doubts and this sped up the process significantly. The support team is amazing and the product is very versatile. Pros When starting off with localising my projects, the support team reached out to see if they could accommodate to my needs. Some of my projects are open sourced, and Crowdin has special resources for projects like this. Everything was disclosed and handled very clearly, and there were no (unpleasant) surprises. I even managed to move a project to Crowdin Enterprise relatively easily once the project became too large to manage on Crowdin.com. Cons It is sometimes a bit annoying that Crowdin Enterprise and Crowdin.com are each restricted and confusing to use in their own way. Crowdin Enterprise is not very friendly for translators. Crowdin.com doesn't offer all the management tools you'd like. It would be better if the two products fused together into one great product. Cons Why are TM matches vs string history vs MT suggestions in the same spot and not easily distinguished? It makes translation difficult for all parties. From an LSP partner perspective, it does not make sense to use CrowdIn. The security access controls are not present. So unless your organization is purely crowd-sourcing, the ability to comply with ISO and other standards is near impossible. But also the key concept of having multiple linguists work on a project at the same time without the ability to cross over into each other's content is missing. Reason for choosing Crowdin We didn't. It was a pleasure to see that software automatically creates strings from the bulks of the code and in the eyes of a translator it is a privilege to have multiple translators on single project provided with the tools to translate in a common way. Through all years Crowdin keep its original forms adding more tools and integrations. Through my career I have worked with the software in 4 different institutions and every time I suggested this solution to my administrators, they liked the idea and the way the software uses. Nowadays apart from software I am exploring the capabilities of the software on document translation. For the last year our team has completed over 250.000 of words and every project cycle has been completed way before deadlines. Even with PDF files, system has its own way of transforming files to the strings which is way more comfortable than transforming them using the tools. Pros It is the most complete solution that can be found for translation purposes, Collaboration tools like Translation Memory, Machine translation, glossary and comments make it a complete solution for a single or infinite number of translators, and the size of the project does not matter. Also, there is a vast database of helpful translators for open source projects. And amazing response times of helpdesk is very crucial. Not only am I using Crowdin on my personal projects, but also professionally with my main employer. I've been recommending it to everybody I know. Pros Before tools like Crowdin were on the market, our engineering team had to spend precious time and resources developing bespoke solutions in order to facilitate the process for our human translators. These are often not tech-savvy enough and thus we would require to abstract the implementation details ourselves. Now, we can setup the integration and leverage Crowdin to actually perform translations in a seamless way. Cons The setup process could probably be improved, but once it's done it's smooth sailing. Some concepts are not clear from the get-go and the documentation is not as useful. Pros Crowdin's interface is very user-friendly, it looks good and is easy to use. The tools provided are sufficient for a good quality translation and using them is very intuitive. Cons The spell checker could be improved to include a wider range of words. I feel like it would also be useful to integrate corpora of different languages into the website and allow users to search through them when they are in doubt of which words would work best for the translation. Crowdin just makes it so easy to translate it. When I have something to translate, I'll get an email to get informed about it. I can see the progress on the Romanian translation, what strings I need to translate and I can save each translation very easily.
