It also has been helpful to give outside people access to the programme . The backup support has been helpful on queries of how to use the programme Pros Very easy to use app which has been transformative in recording where livestock are, input recording and allowing us to record hedge data etc for SFI. The ability to attach photos is great for recording purposes. Has been very useful in keeping track of where all groups of animals are and all staff have the app so immediately can see where everything is which has been particularly helpful for weekend working. We can also see how many days grazing each field has supplied. Useful reporting on inputs used etc. Cons Reports not comprehensive enough for NVZ recording so you need to export and add extra information. Adding notes requires two save instructions and so sometimes the second can be overlooked and therefore info lost. Estate Manager Farming Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Great to-do list for the basics, with limitations" September 10, 2020 4.0 Pros We started using Gatekeeper to manage jobs for our estate team and it is a testament to the usability of the product that our team has taken it up with great enthusiasm. It looks good and is quite straightforward for simple task assignment. The fact that it works well (best) on mobile helps a great deal when most of the team are out and about and the ability to geotag tasks and notes is critical. Having portable farm data is great. Some features like the ability to overlay imported maps such as historical maps are really nice touches and could be very helpful for planning things like hedgerow restoration. The support team are really responsive and friendly. Cons Mapping controls are basic, and drawing and crucially editing fields is limited. The app does allow for import of field shapes from the RPA which is essential and does support KML imports, but manipulating field shapes (removing points, splitting, adding buffers, subtracting areas) is not supported, and there is no undo functionality. If your field layouts are complex or you're trying to manage an environmental scheme you might find it frustrating, as we have. Fieldmargin distinguishes between fields and features, but too much of the functionality of the app is predicated on working in fields - so woodlands, beetle banks, ponds and other features have to be recorded as features which are managed differently, and tasks cannot be attached to them. Sorting and filtering jobs isn't good and the list of jobs can become cluttered. Input and yield recording is basic and there is no stock control or the ability to record any more than basic data from an operator. This isn't a substitute for a farm management package such as Gatekeeper; we'd be unlikely to adopt Fieldmargin to enter this data if we end up having to enter it elsewhere a second time. We understand that we haven't got all of the advanced features of some of the more established players yet but we are continually working on improving the app to be more useful while still ensuring that it is easy to use. More advanced tools for splitting fields and recording areas that are not in production is one of the next things on our pipeline, as is the option to attach tasks to features. It simplifys what others have made complicated. Pros Fieldmargin is a great app for planning field work and getting tasks sent out to my employees. Other app tend to overcomplicate this but Fieldmargin is really easy to use and helps to keep us compliant with legislation. At the touch of a button I can easily look at yield records, or input to a field. It has also helped when calculation how much spray, fertiliser or seed I will need when planning or when carrying out jobs such as spraying, drilling, or fertiliser spreading. Pros Easy to add in your own information about your farm. Then easy to input the data then recall it once you want to look at something. Cons I would like there to be more integration of animals data into the software. Such as, numbers, or when a job was done on a group of animals like drenching/vaccinating that sort of thing. The mapping of the individual paddocks was simple and very handy. Cons I'm a large lifestyle block owner in NZ, if that makes sense, 11 acres. Being able to see where livestock are and for how long they have been there is fantastic. The ability to record field inputs is of vital importance to us. Regularly, we would be standing in a field discussing "farming" and because we have a record of the field inputs right in our pockets its tremendous. Before it would have been a case of logging into the PC and firing up the Excel workbook. Very handy. The customer support is also like no other. Many companies should take note and learn from FieldMargin. Any issues or queries are quickly noted and resolved. Cons I cannot fault it. Sometimes I think these questions in surveys encourage people having to conjure up something to just answer the question.I think it's great.Again, if there was something not up to standard you can go to fieldmargin directly and they'll accommodate your request. It is great to deal with real people who care and are not AI or bots. You can even see them in webinaars. They are real! Pros The ease of creating fields/compartments, that are not always in straight line and then at the click of a button know the hectares. Then planning around this, on the software so that the maths just flows because you know the exact size. Cons Livestock are not traceable to individual animal and we have not found a link to another app yet. They all need records of what is done, what is added, harvests, inputs, irrigation scheduling, orchard practices, mowing cultivation's, etc, etc, and Field margin does all this and keeps it all together in one place. The fact that you just click on an orchard and everything you have done in that orchard is right there. Wonderful. Pros What I love is the ease of using Field Margin. Its just really simple to make new fields, add jobs, finish jobs, make lists and generally just keep records together. All in the map of the farm. Its got all the features I need to keep records and add jobs for the orchards and crop lands. Adding spread sheets, quotes, invoices, photos to various jobs/orchards is also a great idea. The other huge advantage is that the other areas around the farm such as the guest cottages production area/drying kitchens/work shops/mountain areas etc can also have records, notes and jobs given to them. Fantastically simple and easily done. Cons The fact that I have been using it since Jan 2020 and still going strong really shows I cant really think of anything off hand that it should still do or inst doing properly or that the developers haven't thought of. Customer support is fantastic and very helpful. Easy to use and new features being added regularly. Having all my farming information on my smartphone is incredibly useful. Pros Fieldmargin allows you to access ALL your farm data from anywhere. Planting / Spraying / Harvesting records at your fingertips in real time. Job planning and data sharing at the touch of a button. Very well priced. Keep records of all your inputs, track your harvesting process / yields. Keep track of where your livestock is, manage pastures. Schedule work to be done and check on the progress. Being improved and updated all the time. Cons Does not manage flocks / herds on their own. everything is coupled to a paddock / field but I am sure this will be available in due course. With everything going on in our lives, it is tough at times to remember what we did where when thinking back. This app solves that problem. Everything we do in a field is recorded and we can look back at what we did and what the results were. All the information we need is right at our fingertips instead of having to flip back through multiple invoices are hand drawn / printed field maps. Pros Input Tracking, Field mapping, notes, task creations, yield tracking, unlimited history storage. Also, this app is very user friendly and the customer service has been outstanding! Cons I'd like to be able to adjust my field boundaries from year to year. We have a couple big fields that we divide up and use for different things. At times we would like to move our boundaries and not affect the years prior. Owner Farming Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Farminf in South Africa" August 28, 2020 5.0 Its like a farm diary Pros I recently started using Field Margin as the local drone pilot started mapping my farm and I needed a place to view all my maps. We can overlay maps on fields or the whole farm from the drone footage. This has been very useful in seeing multi spectral imagery of our crops and has become a management tool in seeing week areas in fields and also in tree health it also has place to put activities like chemical and fertilizer use, plan work with reminders and many other tools like marking blocks to to do lists with targets and reminders. It also has a farm chat and can set up different teams. So far it has been the most user friendly app I've found. Pros Fieldmargin is an easy app to use to track field use and link up with contractors to record field jobs. Very quick to set up and get started with. Support is always available and able to solve problems. The developer listens to the user and adapts the app accordingly. Cons I'd like to be able to set the working area of a field and it stays rather than always have to alter it. To be able to split fields up into different sections.
