February 26, 2022 5.0 When COVID first hit and we were trying to keep some form of "contact" with our members during the shutdowns, one suggestion was to do some sort of "virtual class" to at least keep us engaged with and communicating with our members. Being a last-minute sort of idea, the implementation was very lacking. Zoom is a fantastic conferencing software, but for the purposes of broadcasting a live exercise class it was not working well. I was then tasked with "Upping the production quality" of our offerings. We used Youtube as our streaming platform, but that was only fixing part of the problem (even though the hardware side of things were improved greatly as well). Seeing as a mix of inexperienced users would be manning the helm eventually, we needed a flexible, but easy to use solution and OBS came to mind. I had used it personally for livestreaming games before, so I was decently familiar with it. I did most of the scene and source setup for the users, but once things were set it was very simple for them to use. Going between waiting video, to intro video, to live footage looked smooth and professional. The options for multiple camera angles and mixing streamed audio with captured audio also enhanced our offerings tremendously. The amount of improvement stunned not only our members, but leadership staff as well. You also can't beat it for the price, either!! Pros High flexibility, very robust feature set, the price is unbeatable (free for some people's purposes), and it is highly customizable. Cons Learning curve can be a little steep for new users, takes some time to setup scenes and sources if they aren't done already, with this many features and options there can be several points of failure, or it can get confusing if not decently experienced with it. Before using OBS I used to use my computer recording functionalities, but it doesn't provide as many settings, filters and options as OBS does (for free). My recording's qualities improved significantly with OBS and I am still using it. Pros It is just an amazing product, I really don't use it for complex things, but the possibilities are endless, you can record screens and audio, record only a window, switch the media sources, etc. You can choose between recoding, broadcasting it to another platform or even use it as a virtual camera. Apart from all this functionalities Cons I haven't found cons at all. I think that is the best software when it comes to multimedia management and recording. It's free, it has many functionalities, and it not only allows amateur users to implement it, but is also perfect for Pro editors and content creators. Configuring OBS is very easy for beginners, with many basic configuration options and even a setup wizard to help you get stream settings configured in minutes. However, if you are an advanced user, there are many options for setting up recording, ingest settings, audio, and hotkeys. Because of the wide range of configuration available in OBS, anything from basic screen capture to professional-level broadcasting using multiple scenes, video sources, and effects are possible. Because of the popularity of OBS, there exists an abundant supply of tutorials, guides, and user support that will help resolve any issues you may encounter when configuring and using OBS. Cons OBS is still currently being developed, so there may be some features that are not implemented or minor bugs. OBS was a massive improvement over existing streaming applications for a multitude of reasons. FMLE was showing it's age (and lack of support). XSplit was a heavyweight when it came to hardware requirements. And other software on the market was obscure and occupied the same space as XSplit.. only XSplit did it better. And then came OBS. Free, lightweight, open source. It was fantastic. I've never used another streaming app since. Pros Well for one, obviously the price tag- can't go wrong with free. But not only is it free, it's lightweight and simple. I've taught many people how to stream using OBS. Cons The interface can be a bit of a pain to use. It's a little too simple in my opinion. Some more functionality baked into the main UI could go a long way. This is mostly solved with the "Streamlabs OBS" version, which is built on top of OBS. Honestly it's been a while since I had to use the profile functionality, but admittedly it was a bit lacking when I did have to use it. Cons I think it's a bit heavy and it can crash if your computer has low specs. I couldn't open multiple Chrome tabs, the game I was streaming and OBS at the same time. But I always adapted because being open source and free, it's amazing. It might be a bit tricky to use if you're new to streaming or video recording, so I'd like it to have a Lite version.
