OBS Studio is 100% free and so are the plug-ins! Pros Functionality, possibility of expansion and integration with the system. And what about the forum? There you can find an infinity of expansions and plug-ins to boost OBS Studio in every way you can only imagine! Cons The CMD/CTRL-Z feature is missing! I can't believe it has never been implemented in it and I always need to re-do some things from zero cause of it. If you're casting online for a course or a conference or even for your gaming, OBS is one gigantic software that deserve a top spot for those who need screen capture software. Pros Making a course? Doing a podcast? Making a video resume? Streaming your game? OBS can do it all and with a little setup, you can make it look great. There are unlimited ways for you to mix and match what you want to appear in your stream and at the same time, it can also be used as a regular video screen capture software. It's a small but effective way to record or cast your computer screen (or with some tinkering, your console!) online or on-video. I've been using it for a long time for my personal projects and OBS has never let me down yet. Cons To make the most out of this software, you really have to study the features it provides. There's a steep learning curve for those who are not tech savvy however, once you learn everything there is to learn, it gets easy and efficient. Reason for choosing OBS Studio OBS was free however, because of the sheer volume of quality it brings, you really can't help but contribute to the cause. I've tried a few various programs, but this is the easiest one I've discovered. So far, OBS Studio has been a wonderful experience for me. Pros Users can customize this software to meet their specific requirements. So, if you want a high-quality recording with a greater resolution, all you have to do is go to the settings option and make the necessary changes. In the same way, the opposite can be done. As a result, you can record in a variety of formats, including MKV, MP4, FLV, and others. It also enables us to alter the sounds. At the same time, system sound, outdoor mic, or both can be recorded. Serves all needs I have, or at the very least, can be used with other systems to achieve the same end. I would strongly recommend. Pros I went with OBS due to the ability to simultaneously steam and record video content, which not many of the free apps allow for. Beyond this, the system allows for multiple sources merged into a single output, with the ability to incorporated a near unlimited number of other apps, browser sources, etc. The quality of the output is good, with great customization options to get the best result based on your systems ability, as well as the ability to swap between encoders to best utilize your system resources. Cons I would approve of a few additional built-in customizations. For example, additional transitions between sources would be advantageous, multiple stream outputs to various services, or the ability to better manage audio (in regards to what OBS picks up, in which it could have a built-in multiple channel option for desktop audio, rather than capture all desktop audio by default). We continued to have problems, because with the software we were using they limited us on the quality of the video unless we started to pay a yearly fee. On top of it, we had troubles with bugs in the system. I consulted with other people in our vocation and 90% of them pointed to OBS Studio. Once we started using this software we have never turned back, it was exactly what we needed and it has worked BEAUTIFULLY without any hiccups. We recommend it to everyone who is live streaming their services and concerts. Pros For live streaming our services, this has become the most valuable software we have ever used in our church and in recording videos. It was simple to set up, easy to use, and other than the occasional user error in the sound room at our church, we have had ZERO problems with this software. Cons There are features that I would love to be able to use on the software, but not having too many technology inclined people in the church has made some of the features for us useless, but that isn't a negative on your part, it just isn't something we can use at this time. The combined simplicity of the interface, ease with which to setup a scene as well as switch between scenes for different elements of presentations has been invaluable. Pros Literally the best feature of OBS is "free", but as far as features and functionality goes, even if it were paid it'd likely be one of the best tools available for straight forward screen capture and broadcasting. My favorite features are the scene management and sources tools, switching between shots and sources, as well as interfaces and transitions, it's incredibly flexible and invaluable, especially if you're either streaming or recording instructing or giving a presentation. Cons Help documentation could be more robust, though with a low-moderate knowledge of encoding it's really straight forward. March 29, 2023 5.0 I typically deploy systems with OBS as secondary systems (not absolutly vital) so that if they are not 100% flawless, it's not the end of the world. But once you have both a hardware and OS setup that works, and you know how to run it, it's pretty solid. Pros First and foremost, it Free! In my company setting we also use Telestream's Wirecast, which is a bit more user-friendly and has a bit more support, but also costs several hundred for each license and requires annual costs for version upgrades and support. I can install OBS on any system I want without having to worry about licensing issues. Cons There a relatively limited number of certified compatible capture devices that work with OBS. That said, other capture devices DO work, but it's more of a 'Try and Find Out' thing, or search the web forums and hope. Musician and Producer Entertainment Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Anyone Can Become A Broadcaster" February 21, 2019 5.0 I am relatively new to live streaming - I didn't even know something as sophisticated as OBS could be obtained for free! It's not necessarily newbie-friendly. You are expected to kind of know what you're doing or at least go read up on the processes. There is a ton of support in the way of user groups, online tutorials, mountains of user-created videos explaining how things work, and there are lots of add-ons and some pretty cool forks of the project as well (a fork is a branch off from the original open source program that's being developed in a slightly different direction). I play in a band and we recently began live streaming one show a month and OBS has been instrumental in this project. Pros Open source and still free, supported by 3rd parties, lots of great informational and instructional videos on YouTube because this software enables anyone to create online broadcasts, so yeah, they're gonna be on YouTube, lots of integrated extras, runs on some less robust computers. Cons The only problem I have experienced that wasn't user error or learning-curve related is that I own more than one Chinese import action cam and OBS identifies them both as by the same name (because they have the same internal components) and if the software, or the cameras, or the computer gets turned off and back on (power outage, cable comes loose, you take a break and Windows updates and reboots your computer while you're asleep) OBS cannot re-identify these cameras reliably and often gets them mixed up. It is possible that the computer identifier for these cameras is where the lack of distinction comes from, but it's annoying enough that I have since gone to using only one hardwired camera and everything else is IP cam to eliminate this problem of constantly having to guess which iteration of "UVC Camera" is cam 1. Pros OBS provides me with literally the best tools for streaming and because it's open-source everyone uses it to build great streaming programs with it. Cons sometimes different forks of obs have issues that cause problems with other plugins so I avoid testing unverified plugins and forks. May 12, 2021 5.0 If you've worked on a different platform before or if you're new to the world of broadcasting, please do not hesitate to try out OBS. You will not be disappointed. It is the only software that I know of that provides a huge library of 3rd party plugins that are compatible right from the get go. You do not need to purchase a whole new set of plugins, but use whatever you have always been using and are comfortable with. Pros When I first started using OBS, I did not have great expectations from it because it was a free to use software that promised so much. After having streamed over 500+ hours of content, I can clearly say, it truly is one of a kind, feature-packed broadcasting software. From adding different layers to transitions to having more than one video source (I've used up to 8 sources with no problem), overlays and access to advanced widgets, you wouldn't believe that the software is actually free. Cons Some features are hidden under long menus. If you were to start using the software without a manual, it does take a bit of time to learn your way around it. October 4, 2021 5.0 It's the best when it comes to stream on Twitch, but I wish it could have a friendlier design, with tutorials, especially orientated for people (like me) who streams on this platform. Pros As a Twitch streamer, OBS Studio is the only software I use when it comes to stream on this platform. Once you configure and understand everything, it gets easier to move around the features it has. It also lets you add multiple stuff to a single "profile" or layout, and then copy the same one so you can add or delete things from that one. Cons At first, you can get overwhelmed by all the things you have to learn in order to even start to stream in the best possible way, especially because it doesn't come with any kind of tutorial or guide that can help you step-by-step. So all you can do is go to Youtube and learn from there.
