### "What more could you ask for?"

July 1, 2019

5.0

I love . I now use it exclusively for all my 3D printing projects because of its accessibility. And it's free!

Pros

a browser based CAD program? Super convenient! Especially when working on Linux where other software packages are unavailable. I find that has all the features and functionality I've ever needed, and the best part is I don't have to take up space on my computer with expensive software!

Cons

Sometimes the features are a bit tricky to find and use. I often have to google and look through forums to figure out how to accomplish a particular design.

### "Great for startups focusing on high-level design"

November 17, 2025

5.0

Extremely satisfied- the design and engineering capabilities of the tool, the data management and collaboration functionality, and the training and support ecosystem provides a first-class experience. It’s really enabled me to take on projects and do things that would have been more expensive and time consuming with most other tools.

Pros

I’ve been very impressed with ’s capabilities for mechanical design, especially the sheetmetal tools. For my purposes (product design and analysis) it is every bit as capable as any other tool I’ve used in my career (mostly CREO, some solidworks). However, the data management functionality and collaboration tools are what really makes it stand out to me. In addition, the web-based aspect makes Onshape extremely cost-effective. This helps me keep my overhead expenses low while also providing extremely high-quality work.

Cons

Coming from CREO, the part studio concept was a little bit of a learning curve, as was the assembly constraints. However now that I’m used to the workflow, I dread when I have to work with any other tool. The training material provided by is very high quality and is time well-spent.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Onshape

Cost of the license, version control functionality without a separate pdm, and web-based nature were critical.

### "Very positive, I really like it. One of my favourite packages I have used."

August 11, 2017

3.0

Pros

How quick a thought or idea can become a model. The look of the modeling space is brilliant. How intuitive the program is, a lot of steps are removed because I feel the program is working me. It understands what I am trying to do. The customer support and community is also a big bonus. The webinars are great as well as the help functions. The functionality within the part studio, assembly and drawings is just brilliant.

Cons

The functionality of the tabs within a document. I find it frustrating to use at times, specially it is hard to put my finger on it but it is the one time I grit my teeth. When I have lost my place in tabs/ can't read the full tab/ delete a part and I jump into or out of a folder. I personally just don't like it. How bad the resolution is on the drawings when you are working on them. When they a exported to a PDF they look brilliant but in while working on them it is not great. I understand this could be a cloud issue. Also to that point the lag inside an assembly again I understand this is a cloud issue. The thumbnail constantly changing on the document page. I would like to be able to set the image is I wish because like the tab it is easy to lose place of where you were working.

### "Best and reliable CAD ever invented "

November 18, 2025

5.0

My overall Experience with is great, after spending some time designing with it, you really get used to it and are able to do some incredible projects. The rendering of 3d models is great if you want to show it to your customers. An other great features is the import/ export options, you can export in every filetype you could need or print out drawing to give in Production.

Pros

I really the the fact that I will never loose any progress I made when my pc crashes because is fully cloud based. It’s really easy to Lears designing with Onshape due to there integrated learning Centre. There Costumer Support is always really quick, friendly and helpful, they never lead me down. In conclusion for me as a small growing business, Onshape is really worth it’s money.

Cons

The only thing that annoyed me is that all project are public in the free version. So if you want to do some project that not everyone should see, you need to pay for it.

### "A CAD system that works with you"

November 25, 2025

5.0

is the future of CAD. The ability to work on any device with a web browser and an internet or cell connection alone is a game changer. It is a "No worries" CAD system that allows you to focus on designing and not worrying about crashes, designs not saved, taking a wrong turn in a design and having to start over from scratch. It's a CAD system that works for you and not the other way around like others.

Pros

The thing I like most about is the simplicity of the Part Studio, The intuitiveness of the functions of the commands, the clean not cluttered toolbar, and the power and speed of simple mate connections in assembly.

Cons

One item that is still behind other CAD packages is sheet metal functionality. There are some solid core features but items such as lofted sheet metal and being able to switch from the default outside angle call out to inside angle call out is still missing just to name a couple.

Making more fun everyday in every drawing. You learn fast and easy. There had been always an online course or description for me to help me going on to my designproblem!-)

Pros

Always the right document, a secure software with great customer support. Value 3D Design in your drawings with a good sales and purchasing strategy to be in very good value for money. Design in your fingertips everywhere everytime with no hassel on elder documents to care about.

Cons

The Standard Plan does not include Company managed data and release management to fundamental things for everybody using CAD seriously, although they are lonesome riders!-)

### "Onshape is overall really good, fast and much more better than solidworks"

November 19, 2025

Like we said 2 steps before. Everything is really good. Also the support if you have sth. to discuss. We are really happy to make the change from Solidworks. Also because you have a working pdm inside. And it works... without new interfaces

Pros

\- Cloud option - no CAD PC - Fast, reliable - New functions insertions with easier construction is really nice agains solid works - Much more efficient with new implementations from new versions & updates. We like it a lot.

Cons

Till now we find only some problems with the point that the configurations with versions are some times a bit unuseful. configuration itselfs = perfect, but in combination not good

### "Onshape for all your CAD"

November 24, 2025

has been my go-to CAD since 2021. I teach classes to help absolute newbies learn Onshape. I design all my work on Onshape. It is a fantastic platform, with the ability to be used on any computer, tablet, or phone. It's probably the best CAD platform I have used.

Pros

Very easy to navigate, the user interface is clean and uncluttered. Tools are fast and easy to use. The mate system is fantastic. The system's speed is outstanding.

Cons

Not having native rendering or useful CAM at all paid levels is disappointing. Snap system when designing in context is frustrating as it won't snap automatically to all edges or vertexes in the plane.

### "Fast and great for collaboration"

November 25, 2025

5.0

Having used SolidWorks and Creo Parametric for years, I consider a strong step forward in modern CAD. Its integrated PDM is one of its biggest advantages. Version control, history, and collaboration are built directly into the CAD environment, which removes the complexity of external PDM systems and makes teamwork much smoother. The PDM is fluid and works much faster than others tested. Performance is excellent: file loading and general modeling feel noticeably faster, and the cloud-based workflow makes it easy to work from anywhere. The 3D design tools are very responsive, and the ability to model multiple parts in the same studio is extremely useful for developing related components. Assemblies work better than other CADs, though you need to adapt to Onshape’s different approach to mates and constraints compared to SolidWorks or Creo and I think the finite-element simulation tools still have room for improvement.

Pros

Integrated PDM is one big advantage. Simultaneous working like in a google document makes teamwork smoother. Performance (file loading, modeling) Multiple parts designing in the same "part" document.

Cons

I think the finite-element simulation tools still have room for improvement and you you need to adapt to ’s different approach to mates and constraints compared to SolidWorks or Creo.

Pros

has the most needed modeling features and even above. Works smoothly from everywhere it doesn't need to be installed everything is cloud based which is genius.

Cons

Sometimes work is little slower, but this is because of a various reasons and it's fixable I think. The main reasons for me is not enough experience and too large assemblies.

### "Simply the best 3D manipulation ever"

April 27, 2024

5.0

Everything feels really intuitive when working with the 3D models. I've found that has every format I need whether it be STL or STEP files. Every time I get a file from a customer that I need to adjust, I can import it into OnShape and it imports without an issue. The time it has saved me over the years is immeasurable. I've recommended it to every First Robotics Team over SolidWorks and they have all loved it too. It's just really easy to use!

Pros

Being able to push and pull the edges of the 3D CAD model to manipulate it's shape and have the model automatically adjust all the other features accordingly in real time and with a live preview, like how pulling an edge would affect the connecting radius on the 3D CAD model, was and is light years ahead of anything I have ever used before. I also love the ability of the history tree to be able to go back and adjust a dimension from earlier and have it auto calculate everything moving forward makes it so much faster to get modeling done.

Cons

The 2D drawing selection could be improved when creating sketches. Sometimes I want to select all the outer edges of a part and use it in a sketch, but it only gets it right or works about 50% of the time. The other half of the time I need to select each edge manually, or even once I get them selected, for some reason it doesn't let me use it within the sketch.

### "As advertised, Google Docs for 3D design."

February 4, 2021

5.0

Went to from Autodesk Inventor out of necessity when school switched to remote learning, probably not going to go back. Onshape does nearly everything students would do in Inventor, but they can now access the program anywhere, whereas we only have one computer lab with Inventor. The only thing Inventor has over Onshape is the interactive tutorials that walk students through basic features within the software. Tutorial videos from OnShape aren't really the same, and ability to work offline would also be nice.

Pros

When students share their document with me I can view the document history to make sure it was that student who did all the work or keep track of who did what in a group project. I can help students remotely by making live changes to their document regardless of if it is a part studio or an assembly. We can voice or video chat while we both look live at the same document.

Cons

There is no way to do contact sets, which can make some assemblies not behave the way I would like. Additional joints can be a work-around in some cases, but not all. A way for parts to interact with each other would be a significant upgrade.

Alternatives considered

[SketchUp](https://www.capterra.com/p/211798/SketchUp/)[Autodesk Fusion](https://www.capterra.com/p/178416/Fusion-360/)

Reason for choosing Onshape

More robust than SketchUp and at the time we went with there wasn't a fully online version of Fusion 360 available.

Fusion 360 has since added an online option so we have used that some since the switch, but Inventor had no online option. So with remote learning online was the only option as most students don't have storage to download a large program like Inventor.

Excelent! Could not be happier to work with this software within all of our organization, has made a real change on the way that we engineer.

Pros

The fast ramp up for learning, how visual and intuitive is it, and of course all the files which are on the cloud.

Cons

I'm really satisfied with it, nothing major I would consider, something which is negative is that when you don't have an enterprise licence everything that you do is public

Versatile, good, agile but little overpriced.Due to its cloud based platform I will definitely think before paying such huge.

Pros

Very lite due to its cloud based platform - don't require high configuration systemWorks lag freeversatile tools and capable to create almost all types of shapes

Cons

Due to its cloud based platform this works good only with a system having good amount of speed.Feels little expensive for this level technical advancements and tools.Difficult to use in large assemblies and surfacing projects - where its really high in price.

### "Onshape is a good fit for me and my startup. It was not a good fit when I tried at a larger company."

August 10, 2017

4.0

I think I laid out most of the benefits previously. It's an excellent CAD tool that fits the needs of my startup. In the future, I'm excited to see how the product adapts to a changing market. Are drawings going to continue to be the golden standard of conveying information? If so, I would hope that you continue to develop drawings, as they are less robust than other drawing solutions on the market (SW, AC). If we start to see a larger trend towards model based definition, will that work essentially the same as view only sharing? Machine shops will have a better answer than I do. One thing I really miss from SW was that my sheet metal vendor had an automatic quoting add-on. I just pushed a few buttons, selected materials and I could shoot a purchase order request out in minutes. I'm curious to see how that kind of automation works its way into the product. As I've stated, I'm pretty happy with so far. Even though I have a couple small gripes, the benefit of knowing that I'm working with tools that I expect to endure better than 'traditional' CAD tools offers me enough peace of mind that we're willing to put up with a decent amount of frustration along they way if it comes.

Pros

I really love how fast I can put my assemblies together with fasten mates. I really love not having to fix broken relations, or deal with other horrible manifestations of Dassault Enterprise PDM. Having a git-like structure has a learning curve, but it much easier to manage. In , things generally behave the way I expect them to. This may seem a little straightforward, but it's amazing how frequently this isn't the case, even with historied, expensive, enterprise software. I love how often I get to see a preview of my document as a model and not just a file name. I love the idea (I don't get a lot of opportunity to use this feature, yet) of being able to share a model in view only mode to anyone. I use the android app on my Pixel XL, and it runs really amazingly well, which is super convenient for those days in the shop I want to check a measurement, but don't want to print and bring drawings (mostly days I waterjet parts and need to do a small amount of post processing).

Cons

Needing to have internet access when I use it! Sometimes I just have a few minutes between here and there, or want to be able to work from a cafe. With software, I can just commit as I go and push when it's convenient. I understand why needs constant internet access to function, but it's occasionally a pain. Performance has occasionally been an issue. I'm mostly using two different beefy workstation desktops (one linux, one windows, both chrome), and I have high expectations from my time working in Solidworks. Sometimes it just takes longer than I feel like it should to rotate a model or move something that has freedom within an assembly. Very small movements can be a little finicky. Same goes for selection through transparency. The other thing I like least is the pricing model. When I was at a larger startup, we had floating licences of SW that worked really well for us. I tried to work on transitioning the team to Onshape, with one of the promises being that we would be able to save some money along the way. In the end, it would have been significantly more expensive than the floating licence system we were using, which ended up being a surprise. Sure, people can jump on and off month by month, but it's much more of a day to day, and even hour to hour thing with when people need to hop on CAD. I don't know what a better system than you have would be, to be honest, I just know it was a pain point when a larger company I was at looked into transitioning.

### "I am a consulting mechanical product designer with almost 25 years experience."

August 18, 2017

I try and get my clients to migrate to all of the time. The benefits I get from the software are too many to list, but some of my favorites: No dedicated computer or server required Built-in PDM system Onshape always saves all of my work, all the time.

Pros

The best thing about is that you can use any computer, tablet or phone as long as it has a browser. There is nothing to install, no "versions" to contend with, and I never lose my work because the software crashes. Onshape is very intuitive for those coming from other 3D CAD packages, there are just a few work flow learning curves, (working with part studios) but other than that, very easy to learn. Another great functionality of Onshape is the built in PDM. Onshape does not only allow you to build parts, moving assemblies, and drawings, you may also upload images, PDFs, Excel sheets, Word documents, etc. The ability to keep all of your files within a single Onshape document can save hours when tracking spec sheets and other pertinent information. I use Onshape when my clients do not have or require a specific CAD program/software, it allows me to share the data with them and smoothly collaborate at all times. Most of my clients utilize SolidWorks and I try to move them over to Onshape whenever possible. Onshape works well with SolidWorks however, when there is a need for both, it allows for a lot of other options that were not there in the past. Lastly, one more great thing about Onshape is that they are constantly updating the software, it gets better each month. Better still is the fact that the updates are automatic, there are no patches, just open your browser and its there waiting for you.

Cons

The only con I can really think of would be it's limitations through the past, but this is to be expected of a brand new software program. Not having the ability to develop sheet metal parts in the beginning was rough, but I also have to say, when does deliver on what is lacking, it's always above and beyond my expectations.

### "Versatile and unencumbered"

November 18, 2018

5.0

Fantastic versatility. I never wait more than an hour when I post a question to the forum. Other users are so eager to help.

Pros

I can run this on a $249 Chromebook, and do. It displays equally well on phones and tablets. I also very much like the fact there is no installation and the software is always up to date (because there is not software). When I need to share CAD data with customers, not it's no worry now as I share a link and they instantly have whatever information I wish to share, right in their browser. How many times does a design take a big turn, or the operator breaks some thing severely? I adore the fact I can go back in time to my very first sketch either backing up to a known good design or branching off with an alt. design.

Cons

Missing CAM which is slowly becoming standard in 3D CAD systems.

### "The intelligence and insight behind the big picture structure of Onshape is astounding."

August 11, 2017

5.0

Sanity. I'm not kidding. Having the creative process constantly halted by CAD and OS bugs that never get fixed, some for decades was constant. I started using really seriously while on holiday in the back country of France when a licensee stopped paying their royalty and I had to redesign the product for production. The internet was very slow, but I got all the work done and quotes were all done before I got back home. I had all my files and all I needed to do that work in my MacbookPro, and my holiday was just as enjoyable as normal.

Pros

The underlying philosophy and structure allows unprecidented freedom to develop and record creative ideas. Pretty well everything can be captured by the built-in version system, while allowing you to return occasionally to ideas that weren't so bad after all. Support is rapid, even from Australia, and new feature requests get answered - in weeks! The interface is cleaner, more logically grouped and simpler than any CAD I've seen over the last 40 years. It often makes me smile and almost never makes me swear. And that is a delightful reversal of normal for me.

Cons

Some commands are hard to find. Searching help through key words can be unhelpful. The feature set is naturally not quite as complete as older CAD systems.

### "Onshape makes life easy"

August 10, 2017

5.0

Pros

Infinite computing, makes it possible to work from anywhere and model quickly, even from my iPad or netbook. The lofting feature blows other CAD systems out of the water. Seriously the loft feature you have now is unbelievably good. The "git" style versioning is genius. I never worry about loosing work, breaking assemblies, etc. The versioning in is my favorite feature IN ANY SOFTWARE. I wish every piece of software worked this way. The collaboration I do now with clients is ONLY possible in Onshape. I can work thousands of miles away from my client but they still feel in complete control. They can access their assets without even contacting me which is so amazing. The shear peace of mind that all of my CAD assets and references are safely stored on the cloud gives me amazing confidence working on projects for clients.

Cons

Adobe Illustrator polylines, DXF and DWG import/ingest needs major improvement. Going from Illustrator to is kind of a pain in the butt right now. So many designs come from Illustrator or EPS, and being able to digest polylines would be so great. Google font support in the text tool would also be helpful. Only 5 fonts or so are available now which is very limited.

### "Excellenty CAD collaboration platform."

April 20, 2021

5.0

We are a non-profit research university, so we use their Education license. The ability to get all the players in an instrument design on the same digital document is invaluable to us!

Pros

The collaborative features allow us to work in remote teams, often on different continents and time zones. Visual communication crosses language barriers better than any other means we know of.

Cons

The lack of well-integrated CAM makes the final step in engineering solutions a bit harder than some other packages.

### "In my experience with Onshape is up and down. But is slowly going more up then down."

August 10, 2017

3.0

Being able to allow a new business like mine to afford professional 3D cad software. Ease of use anywhere

Pros

I like the customer support and the quick responses. Anticipation of new updates and improvements. Constant improvements. Price is good. Can take it anywhere on almost any device as long as internet connection is decent. Sharing is easy but I think could be better. works on mac! I don't need a fancy workstation.

Cons

BOMS!!! absolute worst and very frustrating. I tried both google sheets and OpenBOM and always end up very frustrated and never happy with the finished product. Need exploded views. That exploded view app is garbage Need sheet metal features added faster. Need to be able to add tabs for tab and slot designs. Everything feature that is added to a sheet metal part that will affect laser cutting needs to show up on the flat pattern. I hate and don't understand having the "finish sheet metal" feature. Drawing templates are also frustrating. trying to make a nice company template has been a struggle and I am still not happy with it. Importing to a DWT and modifying in a 2D cad software never reimports properly.

### "I do not loose information, it is grate. And no more crash, so I work very happy."

August 17, 2017

5.0

It is a profesional CAD that can run in any computer. The cost is accesible. And I think that have a new workflow or work method that have advantage and save time.

Pros

The information that I create is safe. I do not need a big computer, so the big files can work fine. It not have crashes, so I do not lose time by that. The idea of work with multiple solids in a same "fiel" have a lot of advantage, and the assembly mate is faster.

Cons

I need to test the new surface tools, It was limited, but I see the tutorial and think that this new tools was strong. I need to put my own profiles (or customise profiles) in weldment or structural tools. The draft angle analysis is important. The idea to use partners or apps, it grate, but It is expensive or maybe I need to understand how to use to pay only the time that I need. I do not have a risk to have a monthly charge in my credit card if I forget uncheck something. Sometimes is important project a sketch or curve one surface.

### "30 year mechanical and hydraulik CAD user"

August 19, 2017

5.0

Pros

I don't need expensive cad hardware and the program is available at any place with internet connection. can import other cad file format so it is possible for me to cooperate with companies using other Cad programs. Onshape give me as a design consultan possibility to cooperate with other designers I don't have to invest in expensive cad programs. It is easy to present and discuss design development in project groups. The pricing is fair set.

Cons

Missing some funktionalities i.e. In my project with rock drill rigs I need to position boom and feed (7 degrees of freedom) to different positions. I hope a nice feature to handle the movement will come. A great benefit for is the ability to transfer files but the recipian must have a license and they are reluctant to invest in a license . A possibility to temporarily give rights on the fly to load files with a free license can be a solution

### "Cloud based CAD for everyone."

July 1, 2018

5.0

Pros

Because is cloud based, users are saved the stress of installing software which can be a very stressful experience with some software.Everyone in my organizations technical department have access to the most current version of every file , saving us the confusion of having to always confirm the version of every file we need to use.Editing ,collaboration , file recovery ,access, and files storage is simplified ; all of these thanks to Onshape for being cloud based.

Cons

No complaint whatsoever from my experience with . I only wish I was aware of this program 3-4 year ago.
