Comments: As with any large, complex and flexible software package like Spectrum, it can be rather complicated to set up and train users in operating it. We have been overall pleased in using it since we switched back in 2009. During this time our business has just about tripled in size and we do not feel as if we have out grown it.

Pros: Lots of modules available with a fairly robust implementation, continuing active additions of new features and improvements, document imaging allows easy access to attached documents, security rights for employees can be adjusted down to individual menu selections if necessary, customer support is very good and transparent (we are notified if something doesn't work as expected with suggested workarounds - even if we didn't report the issue), and the ability to create custom reports in Crystal.

Cons: While subscriptions for updated US and state income tax tables are available, local income tax tables are not. When a sales/use tax code is entered into the screen, it cannot be marked inactive if it is no longer used (there are some other setups with the same issue). If a report has been previewed or exported in one form (pdf, for example), it cannot be immediately exported in another (such as Excel) without re-running the report. While most reports run quickly, there are some that can take a while and having to wait the additional time for the same information can be frustrating.

This is the accounting software that my company uses.

Comments: Takes a very good accountant to make this work properly.

Pros: Offers a lot of features. Collects a lot of information depending on the modules that you purchase. Has plenty of reports to pull from.

Cons: Very expensive. Not easy to get setup when moving from a different software. Seems to have issues every time there is an update.

Pros: When you call Spectrum support you get a real person who can guide the support process to quick resolution.

Cons: Cloud hosted solutions - I'm not sure this is truly a 'con' item as cloud based SaaS services can be benefit to many. It would be better to have both options available through. For most it can be a cost savings when including management costs but for others it can be more expensive to pay the hosting fees and connectivity costs.

Pros: Cloud platform allows anywhere access. We had several disjointed systems for document imaging, some billing functions, etc. With Spectrum, we were able to consolidate systems and introduce some much needed and improved processes for digital expense approval, time cards. Built on SQL we also implemented automated report functions that has saved lots of busy work. Customizable dashboards allow at a glance management by exception.

Cons: Complex setup, detailed data import could improve, annual maintenance fees are significant as compared to our previous package. Work order system field technician module only allows the most basic system functions.

Pros: Online User Interface Document Imaging Pretty Good security management (can easily define who can do/see what)

Cons: Not all functions available in all modules Not able to automate reconcilliation Reports often have to be customized to get the information you need Support is not always helpful - have to carefully explain issue/user experience, usually try to send you to a help article that is not sufficient Can only process one pay roll batch at a time No "set up" workflow (ie. while everything is usually within one area, there is no flow that goes through all required fields for a new entry/things can be missed

Pros: The ease of getting data in and out of the system. Being able to download the data into Excel and Access to do reporting is invaluable. The introduction of the Web Services allowing data to flow in and out of Spectrum has changed the way we do our Project Management by allowing our PM's to stay in the project management software and bringing the data back into spectrum.

Cons: The non accounting users find the system hard to use. Downloading data into Excel needs to be updated to using more current versions of Excel.

Pros: I like how it is accessible no matter where you are, even via a cell phone. It makes it nice when you have guys in the field that need to access the software and they aren't in front of a computer.

Pros: I like the dashboard and apps. They give you a good snapshot of your projects. I like the Revision button in Submittals however I wish it would not maintain the dates of the original submittal.

Cons: Spectrum seems to have been created for accounting and the project management module simply added on. From a Project Management standpoint I prefer the way that Viewpoint functions and the reports and documents generated looked more professional. I'm not sure if it is how my company has the program set up but I don't find it as easy to navigate as some of the other users comments. The few times I contacted Help to inquire about functions I was told that the program doesn't work like that and my company would have to pay extra to set that up. Often when I transmit electronically signed contracts the signatures seem to be removed when the document sends.

Comments: Support for the Spectrum software as provided by the original DC support group is well above average. Their response time on basic to intermediate issues is nearly always instantaneous, and they aren't afraid to dive into the areas that are more complex. They just take a bit more time. And the culture of staff from product support to development to sales to professional services is aimed toward providing solutions.

Pros: The API's are amazing. They provide bi-directional interface with Spectrum allowing maximum efficiency for internal processes. The SQL environment creates a platform for dynamic reporting power enabling the ability to link Spectrum data tables with other databases as well. The intuitive navigation provides a user-friendly experience, and the browser based application eliminates laborious client based software maintenance processes.

Cons: For an asphalt manufacturer and unit price contractor, some of the tools available need to be developed further. They have a good start and for simple analysis situations they may be enough. However, if it sophisticated analysis you are after, there needs to be further development in these areas.

Pros: We purchased the system for the friendliness of the screens for project managers use. Once you know one module, it is fairly easy to maneuver around in other modules you are less familiar with. The training courses available are exceptional, especially the courses taught by Thor.

Cons: The implementation was weak. Once core modules (AR, AP, payroll, GL and job costs) were implemented, the implementation team disappeared. We purchased the software for the ability to utilize the system outside of the basic accounting functions.

Pros: GL and Job Cost balance and are accurate. Audit logs are solid and transactions are traceable. Ability to export to Excel is nice.

Pros: The software is very user-friendly, even for our non-computer friendly field techs. I love the dashboard apps. Especially the ones used with the Employee Kiosk and Field Tech modules. We can set these up for our employees where they are never really "in" the software but still able to do their work. The software being cloud-based is an A++ - no software to install! The report options are endless! The customer service is out of this world! You cannot go wrong with Spectrum.

Pros: I have been using Spectrum V14 since it was released. I like the apps on the Site Map and the shortcuts menu. I train our project manager and project engineers on this software regularly and these two areas I think get used the most by our people. I promote these areas on a regular basis and encourage everyone to use the ones we have already created and also create their own.

Cons: My wish list would include a link to Outlook for ease of obtaining and maintaining a list of current contacts. Also, RSS feeds hardly ever get used, but links to actual websites would be a better feature. Also, insurance tracking feature is confusing when working between the vendor and the job-specific side. It would be very helpful if the Help Menu broke down the available features related to insurance and how each one can or should be used.

Pros: I love the system, it has great value and ease of use. The dashboard and the apps you can put on it are very visually appealing and add great value to the system.

Cons: The system can use a few enhancements. There needs to be a little less going on with the criteria screens for running reports, PM's can get extremely overwhelmed when trying to run reports due to the fact that there are so many different options on how to run the reports. There are few other small items that can be enhanced, but it seems as if Spectrum is enhancing things regularly so I'm sure it is only a matter of time.

Comments: The program is GREAT. If you have tons of cash that needs to be spent because you need the write-offs, you can't go wrong with Spectrum! The rest of you need to make sure you are prepared to spend $100K in your first couple years!!!!!

Pros: Funny functional program that has the potential to be the last accounting platform you ever have to purchase. VERY powerful

Cons: These guys are VERY misleading about the total cost of ownership. VERY expensive program. VERY expense maintenance agreement that is required. VERY expensive implementation. VERY expensive professional services. Every little thing you need to do to get this program setup for your business is going to cost you THOUSANDS of dollars.

Pros: The ability to create custom reports to fit the needs of your business. They are willing to listen to what you have to say and are willing to make changes to fit your company's needs. Able to accomplish several tasks from within a company.

Comments: I love this software! The report options are endless!

Pros: For years my company used Mas90. While it was a good software, we needed something geared more toward job costing and our service department, that could also handle the growth of the company. We have also recently ventured toward multi-state payroll, multi-company. We are able to switch companies with ease - no logging out!

Comments: While the product has great features for costing, the reports and review capabilities are limited. It is very difficult to drill down on certain types of transactions and get enough information. There are also many issues with Canadian Payroll and a lack of support with knowledge. The new upgrade also has many bugs and requires a significant amount of time with developers to take corrective action. While this is free of charge, does not seem to respect that my time spent costs the company money. I don't trust the accuracy of posting in Spectrum.

Pros: It is really great for costing. It provides simple job costing for labour, equipment, and cost management. There is free product support (US based) and (most of) the people there are extremely helpful and want to help y ou find a solution.

Cons: -The biggest flaw is the very small field space for memo lines. We have to keep many backup journals -If any payments are made other than through the AP module, it is really difficult to drill down on a prior transaction. -Posting errors for payroll (such as posting to the wrong job or equipment number) can only be corrected by completely voiding and re-entering the entire payroll. There are obviously times where an employee is going to mix up information. We can do a correcting journal entry so the costs are correct, however, labour cost reports don't pick up Journal Entries.

Comments: There are a lot of features and different uses but it seems to be a software mostly applicable for accounting. As far as a project management tool it lacks some of the major necessities. There is no access for the guys in the field so it has some downfalls there.

Pros: - Lots of features and breakdowns as far as the money side goes.

Cons: - Needs to be more accessible to the guys in the field, that meaning foreman. - Entering names into a project can be difficult at times - The software itself is very slow

Comments: My primary concerns when looking for a new ERP platform were: 1) Integration with our HCSS and Command-Alkon software 2) Web-based platform that I could access just about anywhere 3) Intuitive for our people so the learning curve would be smaller 4) Better reporting options 5) Robust Job Costing

Pros: We have only been live for a month but so far Spectrum has lived up to its billing. Our people that use it daily have already remarked about how easy it is to use and how much time it is saving.

Cons: So far none other than self inflicted ones. What I mean by this is that our older system was a mess and conversion was made more difficult by that. I would put more time on the front end than you think you will need to make sure you are brining over as clean of data that you can. Additionally, the price was a little misleading at the beginning as the implementation can be anywhere from an additional 50% - 100% of the actual software cost. I think it is worth it 100% but just something to account for in your shopping and comparison process.

Recommendations to other buyers: Start early, ask tons of questions, and get permission to talk to references who have switched from your platform to the new one (I talked to 2 different companies). These calls will do wonders for getting you ready in ways you didn't even know you needed.

Comments: I recently started my position with a contracting engineering company, so I have not been using the software for very long. However during my 5 months of employment so far, I have experienced no issues. I've been very satistified with all aspects of Spectrum that I have been exposed to thus far. I have no complaints.

Comments: Spectrum software is very functional and easy to use. The fact that it is web browser based gives versatility that many other products do not have. We can also run it anywhere we have an internet connection. Implementation went fairly seamlessly for us upgrading from another software suite. The reps are very responsive when we need help. Tech support has been great when we need it. Now that we are two years down the road from implementation, we probably only call Tech Support several times per year, but they are there when we need them!

Pros: Web based Robust

Great for accounting, payroll, job costing, etc.

Pros: It is user-friendly (quite easy to use and to train others to use). There are constant updates (service paks) that keep the product current. There is always something new that enhances existing modules. If we ever have problems, they are addressed quickly.

Cons: The HR module is lacking in many ways. We run many HR functions outside Spectrum (spreadsheets, files, etc). User securities could be improved on (ease of setup).

Recommendations to other buyers: As long as you are not looking for heavy HR usage, this is a great product and will do everything you want it to do.The modules all work well together for the greatest functionality (except HR).

Decent construction software, but could use some work.

Pros: Spectrum did a great job with tracking our union info, as we had a few different unions, all with more than one local. The standard reports were easy to use, although could use a bit of tweaking for saved templates. Payroll was an easy step-by-step process.

Cons: We were only allowed 2 people to be authorized for support calls. We had more licenses than that, and everyone that works on the system should be allowed to call with their own issues. The report writing feature could be much more user-friendly. We had to create our custom reports directly in Crystal Reports, which takes much training. Other software I've used have used Crystal in the background, but with an intuitive, easy writer built into the software. This was a much better software before they moved from an installation to a web-based system.

Recommendations to other buyers: I used this at my last job. Our company was already using this when I started my position, but it was an installed system. There are probably better software solutions for our company, but since switching isn't cake, we stayed with them even when the new web-based system had several issues. I'd recommend really looking around if you're just starting or looking for a change.

Pros: This product offers plenty of customization capability and provide any type of user a unique working experience. Its full featured reporting and document management offers a great piece of mind. The application, with little customization, can support a wide variety of industries. The multi-company support capability offers a solution that can grow as you do.

Cons: The dashboard has some limitations and the configuration can take some time depending on information you need. Deployment of bug fixes often results in the introduction of new issue that may take a little time to get resolved after the patch was applied. The add-on can drive up the cost quickly

Recommendations to other buyers: Be sure all the features you need are included in the package to avoid additional future charges. Shop around on pricing but be mindful of the processes and objectives having and using this software will provide.

Pros: I like that the product is able to be used online, so I can access my data anywhere. As a company, Dexter + Chaney is very professional and responds to consumer feedback.

Cons: I don't like that the dashboard doesn't read from multiple companies at once. I don't like that it's very expensive to add on extra components.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would say to do a few trials of the software and have someone sit down with you to go through every step of your current system and determine what you're trying to achieve before making a decision.

Pros: I like being able to scan copies of invoices into the system and the approval processes, as well as being able to search account numbers by name.

Cons: I don't like the limitations of posting in A/R. Costs cannot be deducted from sales entries, causing time-consuming extra entries. We're not able to get an account balance at a specific date.

Recommendations to other buyers: Count on requiring a lot of extra time for training. The changeover was extra stressful for me because I was already behind in my workload.

Pros: The integration of images and accounts payable invoices is fantastic. It's really easy to navigate the software and use it to work. The learning curve is also fairly easy.

Cons: Sometimes, when there are software bugs and Canada-specific issues, the vendor takes an awfully long time to resolve them. However, on the whole, they respond in a relatively timely fashion.

Pros: We have used this software for over ten years. It's very user friendly with lots of features that are beneficial to running our company, like payroll, financial reports, billing, purchasing, and accounts payable. I mostly use the purchase order feature, which gathers the information that we need for our accounts payable department to use to match up to invoices.

Cons: It seems that sometimes you have to press a lot of buttons to get to the screen that you need.

Recommendations to other buyers: When I was trained, I took lots of notes and just started to use the purchase order program, which was easy to learn and get the information that we needed to capture.

Pros: The fact that we can use the system to manage multiple companies. Having a dashboard that gives a summary of cash flow and invoicing. I like that once you buy a product from Dexter Chaney, you always get the updates for free.

Cons: At first, there was a steep learning curve. I don't like that it's complicated to create your own custom reports if you don't know how to use SQL.

Recommendations to other buyers: I recommend asking them to let you in a test system to try for yourself. Also, make a list of everything you need the system to do and run it by them to make sure there are no surprises once you've bought it.

Pros: There is so much this program can do; most any employer can make this program fit their unique circumstances and get the kinds of reports and data they need.

Cons: Because there is so much to this program, the learning curve is pretty high if you have not worked with a computer program this complex.

Cons: In version 14.2, it can sometimes feel cumbersome to navigate through the software.

Recommendations to other buyers: With some of the other software programs we use, it can be impossible to get helpful software support. That is an important aspect to look at because no matter how good a program is, there will always be problems. Pros: From what I have access to in Spectrum, it's pretty easy to navigate and find my way around the site. I am new to the company, so I got a small crash course in the beginning, but other than that, I have been able to find my way around.

Cons: I feel like I'm doing a lot of my scanning twice. It takes a while to load. I also find myself wishing there was a way to save without opening up tabs and dragging. Like a quick save I guess you could call it?

Recommendations to other buyers: I've realized patience is the key with software like this. Most of my frustration with Spectrum is also my own patience. I find myself pulling my hair out when my computer doesn't want to work as fast as my fingers and brain. Pros: The product is pretty straightforward. The modules are named appropriately, and individual processes within the modules are relatively easy to find. The layout is easy to read. Generally, it is easy to maneuver through the program and each process as needed.

Cons: It is not very versatile or flexible. It seems to have trouble expanding to manage an increasingly larger customer/project base. As our company has expanded, the system has struggled to keep up.

Recommendations to other buyers: Really evaluate where you are and where you are planning on going in your business before taking on this particular software. It may work for small companies for a long time, provided they have no major growth. If you foresee major growth in the future, you may want to evaluate a more robust and flexible software.

Pros: The product is an extremely well-thought-out and well-developed job costing and project management tool. The software development personnel were knowledgeable and thorough in their assistance.

Cons: Having lead and completed several systems conversions, I was pleased with the product. I don't recommend anyone who has no hands-on conversion experience doing this on their own. It was hard initially to speak to someone who was on the same level as I was, but once I was able to connect to a more experienced developer and customer service rep, it was a smooth and rewarding experience.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you've never done a systems conversion, let the experts do it, and even if you have, make sure you have a thorough understanding of the product modules and the capabilities. With new systems implementation, there is always a certain percentage of customization required make sure that you understand what you need for your particular company.

Pros: Spectrum is easy to install, deploy, and use while keeping overhead costs to a minimum. Do not need internal IT people to understand and support the system. The software's workflows are logical and well organized. It supports union payroll processing which most competitors do not handle well - if at all. Integrated document imaging and storage is a real cost saving benefit. Dexter + Chaney has outstanding product support along with training and user group. Being a smaller company, it is easy to get to know the ownership firsthand. Bottom line: the software "just works".

Cons: While the Spectrum Service module is adequate for relatively simple maintenance support, we found that it did not meet the needs of a large Commercial HVAC + Mechanical Service provider.

Recommendations to other buyers: There is a lot of construction-related software on the market but for ease of use, simplicity, support, and keeping overhead costs low, Spectrum is hard to beat. When evaluating references, ask about how many users it takes to perform the core Accounting Functions. Be sure to check out competitive software's ability to handle union payroll (if applicable). For commercial applications, look into the ability of Payroll modules to apply actual labor costs to jobs and to provide detail labor cost breakdowns for substantiated labor billings.

Happy with our decision.

Pros: We appreciate how responsive their help desk has been during our implementation. The software is user-friendly, and they're continuing to improve their systems.

Cons: Their documentation has not kept pace with the software improvements. Available documentation is largely for the last version and not all of the online help is up-to-date. At times it refers to an outdated manual that we need to request. This is a very minor issue within a dynamic system meant to tailor to your operations.

Recommendations to other buyers: Include all users from the start and make the vendors come to you more than once. Our office rated a competitor software higher (60/40 split) during the first round of live demos based on the canned presentations. Then when we sent a document of what each module wanted to see that pertains to our business and got a better look at functionality, the office was unanimous that we wanted to go with Spectrum.

Pros: Document imaging is truly built inside the software. The image storage was built inside every module for anything you want to scan. All of our AP (invoices, vendor contracts, Insurance Certs), AR (invoice supporting documents, MSA's), equipment files (titles, registrations), etc. were stored electronically and very easy to review. When approving AP, right inside the pre-check register I could review an electronic copy of any invoice making approval on the road very simple. There were also reports that could be run telling you when contracts were to expire, registrations were due, etc. The bottom line is that the designers not only listened to what the end users wanted, they also spent a lot of time making sure they designed it to make it easy for everyone. There are also a lot of user designed fields that allow you to customize things to fit your needs.

Cons: We had problems keeping the TB in balance. At least every three months, we had a transaction that only posted 1/2 of the entry, so when we ran a trial balance, it was out of balance (and the rebuild utilities wouldn't fix it), we then had to spend hours researching witch entry didn't post correctly, figure out the other side of the entry and then pay someone with backdoor access to recreate the missing entries. When we called Dexter and Chaney's support team, they had no answers as to why it happened; they would just help us figure out how to fix it (charged per hour). The financial report writer needs a lot of work. They do not support any of the better 3rd party systems like FRx, F-9, Hyperion, etc. Therefore, there was a lot of dumping to Excel and re-keying things into formats we could use. There was also zero drill-down capability. If you ran a TB and questioned what was in the line item, you had to run a detailed TB to see the detail. Then, if it came from another sub-ledger you had to run a report there to see the source document. Our implementation consultant was not very good; her training seemed poor and her knowledge of the workings of Spectrum were great, but she had no experience with the every day use of it, so I frequently pushed back on how it would work in the real world. Eventually she would concede that it would work better the way I proposed.

Recommendations to other buyers: Hire someone who has a very detailed knowledge of how it really works, then implement it. You should also find an IT consultant who can fix the bugs you will quickly discover without having to wait on Dexter and Chaney. Dexter and Chaney's help desk is very helpful, but if you have an urgent issue it may take them a day or so to fix it. We had a scanner issue, and it took 3 months and a replacement scanner (at their request, but our expense), only for Dexter & Chaney to tell us they had no idea and it couldn't be a problem on their side; it had to be our computers. This was completely false because the full image was there, just using their image reader only allowed us to see the first page.

Comments: We are a grading and paving contractor in California, and have been using Spectrum for 12 years. We love the product mostly for the extensive flexibility and information it provides. You really get out of it what you put into it. The upgrades over the years have been great, and most recently going to version 14 has added a whole new ease of use and flexibility that I have never seen in accounting software. We use just about all of the modules that D&C offers and each one really does more than most need. Constant improvement and keeping up with todays technology advances has been something that D&C does very well. Their support team is amazing and a great group of people to work with. Sometimes it feels like they are an extension of our accounting department. They know about us and how we use the software. They really are very responsive, understand the problems, and work hard to find a solution. We use Spectrum to produce daily job cost, and we know where each project stands at the end of the day contributing to improved job performance and revenue on our projects because we are able to quickly identify cost issues, overruns, or change order work and get them resolved with the GC early on. One other aspect of D&C is their continued efforts to partner with other companies, creating added value and ease of sinking other activities to Spectrum thus eliminating duplication of data entry and resulting in improved reporting.

Comments: Our business has two divisions - Commercial Construction and Service Maintenance. We¿re based in Pennsylvania and have been operating for about 28 years. The computer system we had been using prior to switching to Dexter + Chaney was outdated for our uses. After carefully reviewing all the options, Dexter + Chaney was high on our list. One of the main functions we were looking for was something that would tie together both divisions of our company. We liked what the sales team told us about the software, and it seemed to better suit our needs than the system we had. We were told it had modules that would make it possible to tie in both of our divisions, with great customer support, reports that were easy to use, and to meet all of our needs, etc. We started with Dexter + Chaney in 2005 (about 8 years ago), having high hopes that Spectrum (or Forefront as it was called at that point) could perform all the functions we were looking for, and more. We spent several months preparing for the change over/familiarizing ourselves with the screens/and inputting information. Every Vendor/Employee/Client had to be reentered manually, which was very monotonous, but relatively simple. Some of the modules were similar to the program we had used prior, but others were more difficult and required calls to support. It took us several months to feel comfortable using Forefront, and probably a year+ until we felt like we really had a decent grasp of it. Since we¿re a smaller business, we have the ability to notice problems with reports/programs more easily than a company with hundreds of employees. After we went live with Dexter Chaney we came across several issues, but attributed most of them to new user errors. As we have become more and more confidence with Spectrum, we have found several major bugs in the system that were unknown to Dexter + Chaney, or they had thought were resolved. On a few of these occasions, we had to really push for them to investigate and resolve the issues. One of the biggest problems we¿ve seen is that the new Versions seem to be released before they are thoroughly checked, and there are repeat problems. We have received some good, and some lacking, customer support. There are several really knowledgeable reps who have helped us through our problems quickly. We have also spoken to other reps and management in support that have been very difficult, ignoring our concerns and refusing to listen or respond to our calls/emails. At one point, we were not getting updates on a problem and logged onto their website to see if anything new was posted for our issue. We didn¿t get an answer, but instead found a string of emails they had accidentally posted, making it clear that our problem wasn¿t being taken seriously on their end. Something as simple as calling in to support has proven to be a hassle since Dexter + Chaney only allows 3 people on the contact list, and we have 6 regular users. Some of the programs cannot be used to the full extent of what they are shown. Example: Payroll is set up so you can do multiple check sequences in one pay run for an employee. The problem is that it¿s not set up to calculate the correct taxes/deductions if you do this. If they are paying a tax/deduction that reaches the limit in the first check, it will also be taken out of the second check, and there¿s a possibility for the reports to be wrong. We purchased the Infolink module a few years ago to help us write reports in Excel using Database Query. We were told by the sales team that it would be easy to use and we could create reports with the exact information we wanted. The training we received on it barely covered the basics. It¿s far from easy to use, and many of the reports that come up cannot pull the requested information. Overall, I would say Dexter Chaney is average at best. We are able to use Spectrum for most functions, but not as easily as we were promised. Support in general is lacking, as is our confidence in the product any time there is an upgrade. It¿s not as good as we were led to believe.

Comments: I have been using Spectrum for many years, even back to when the program was called Forefront. I am an office manager for an aggregate supplier, so we have used Spectrum to fill our need for an accounting software that can manage our ticket data from our scale software, track job costs and handle a somewhat complex GL chart of accounts. For the most part, we have been pleased with Spectrum. The functionality of the software is good and it is capable of doing much more than we use it for. We have recently upgraded to a new version that allows for a bit more functionality; once we get over the growing pains of change, I think we will really appreciate the options in the new version. My one complaint is that one of the modules we use (materials management) was not ready to be launched in the upgrade version in my opinion. There are several kinks that have not been ironed out yet, and the support staff is not quite ready for the problems the developers created in the new version. I have not had significant problems in any of the other modules that we use.

Comments: We've been using Dexter & Chaney Spectrum (previously Forefront) for over 12 years; longer than I've actually been employed by the construction company I work for. We originally (and for many years) only used Spectrum for some basic accounting functions. After finally upgrading to the current version (we are currently on V13), we expanded our use of the software, utilizing the system on a much broader base - from purchasing and subcontracts, to projecting costs, and financial reporting/WIP. We have found that with the increased functionality came increased training needs. We had project managers that had never used the system previously, and suddenly needing to do their projections directly in the system. Navigation has been a source of contention, but we think that version 14 shows some promise on being much easier to navigate for non-computer-savvy users. Computer savvy users have generally been able to quickly learn to use the system. The flexibility of the system does allow a large range of ways to enter and report information, and this has been a positive and a negative. It's a positive as we can choose to set up jobs in different ways depending on how we want to run and report that job. It's a negative in that there are so many choices to make, and that some users can get confused if given too many options. Customer support was initially very poor, as we were on a very old version that really wasn't being supported well. Since we've upgraded to a more recent version, customer support has improved. Custom programming can be very expensive, and we've encountered some issues that required custom programming, but Spectrum, for the most part, has enough functionality in place with the base product to meet most needs. I've used a few other systems, and Spectrum seems to be far better than the other ones I've used. I've heard others complain sometimes, but I think that some of that comes from confusion over the wide variety of options and the navigation difficulties (not being intuitive). All-in-all, I think it's a pretty good product.

Comments: I really like Spectrum's software. I have used Spectrum now for over a year. I installed, set up, and used another software program for many years prior to this and when I began using Spectrum I was so excited to see they worked out all the limitations that I had been frustrated with previously. It was very easy for me to learn Spectrum. The ease of doing payroll is so great. Entering Change Orders and applying them to the draws can be tricky, but you just have to follow the great instructions they provide and it works beautifully. I love the document scanning abilities. Their help desk is always available and always so helpful. I would recommend Spectrum.

Comments: The process of switching accounting software has been a long and enduring process. But once you get to learn everything, it gets smoother as you go along. There are good and bad points, as with any new software you start using. But all in all, I think it will be a good move in the long run. We are still learning little bits and pieces as we move along, and each update they do corrects any mistakes or problems that may occur. And they are always on top of improving with any questions we may have.

Comments: We are a manufacturer and installer who uses Spectrum V14, after converting from V13. The conversion went smoothly. The software is pretty intuitive. You can figure it out on your own fairly quickly, or, look in up on the online manual, or you can quickly speak to someone from the support staff. I have been very pleased with Dexter & Chaney, their product, and support!

Comments: We purchased Spectrum a few months ago, and have been very pleased with it - especially with regards to managing a group of companies all within the same software. We're a developer building single family homes in British Columbia, and we were looking for a solution that allowed us to go paperless in the office, and at the same time, be able to have a project management component that linked the job site to the office. We upgraded quite substantially from Simply Accounting and have overhauled all our processes to ensure that things could be automated as much as possible where it made sense to do so. We're due to go live on September 2nd, and the implementation has gone very well. The team has supported us and explained things clearly any time we were struggling. It has taken about 3 months in total, by committing to meet with them over the phone for around 6 hours per week. The IT desk and other staff members we speak to are all very knowledgeable and pretty much always available to speak to when we need it. We have been eagerly anticipating the v14 update so that Canadian taxes are now able to be handled, so I'm looking forward to a paperless future. Its a very powerful tool as long as it's used in the right way and is fed with the right information. If I were to point out negatives for our company specifically, we need to be able to do property management through this system - which there is no add on for. The workaround we chose to go with was to use accounts receivable to track these things. I can also see that if we were wanting to pull all the detail from Simply Accounting and move it all over, then the implementation process would have been very lengthy. Instead we transferred only summary balances forward. One frustration we had is that our check stock is not compatible with Spectrum and we got a very expensive quote for them to tweak the system to change the format of our checks.

Comments: Just before Y2K we switched from the IBM System 36 to Forefront. Although not in the Construction business, we have adapted the software system for our use. They have updated the software, making improvements based on user inputs. However, in the last 14 years they have not been able produce a simple job cost report that we developed and used on the System 36 computer.

Comments: For the most part, Spectrum is a user friendly program. A/P and A/R are great. I would like to see some changes made to the subcontractor billing and purchase order module. We are currently using version 13.1 and have had Spectrum for 12 years. I can say, Dexter and Chaney has the best support team around.

Comments: I am with Christenson Electric, Inc. in Portland, Oregon. We are not unique, just a typical electrical subcontractor. We converted from Bidtek to Forefront/Spectrum back in October of 2004. Overall, I love the ability to transport documents from reports in Spectrum to excel or word documents. For the most part, the system is very easy to use. I believe we are in version 13, although I don't maintain the IT support. I wish there was some kind of a home button so you didn't have to enter "F3" five or six times, depending on what you are viewing. Also, bringing up crystal reports does take a little more time than we would prefer since everyone is always in a hurry. Once you understand the processes they run rather quickly. It took some longer than others to get up and going. Customer Support for Spectrum is great. I never run across anyone not 100% trying to help you. When you type in wrong information or try to fly thru the system, I wish there was a quicker way to get back to where you were, instead of the system trying to look through everything. We have too many users doing the same functions at times which causes hang ups but we have learned to deal with that.

Comments: I am employed by a large, heavy civil construction contractor in Oregon. I was hired five years ago in the payroll department, and Spectrum was the software that this company was already using. In the past, I had used a construction software called Foundation which was exceptional at job costing materials by piece versus hourly wage. Spectrum's latest upgrade to the new version 14 has had some major changes in the payroll and human resource module, and has taken some time to get used to. I found that the basic data entry screens are easy to use but it's taken more time to locate where the functions are than I had hoped. If our company had invested in having on-site training prior to the upgrade, I believe these changes would've been easier on all of our employees. One of our employees did attend the Seattle conference but she was disappointed that there was not more hands-on learning and training, and thought that our company should have received a team training session prior to the upgrade, as well. Our payroll, human resource, purchasing department, contract administration, and accounts payable departments have all requested additional training with this latest upgrade so that they can use Spectrum with confidence, and complete their daily tasks faster on a regular basis. I am awaiting several changes that our company has requested from Dexter and Chaney's support team via telephone and multiple emails. The human resource module needs some serious work in terms of versatility. I am still hoping to take a crystal reports training class in order to create reports in Spectrum, rather than exporting everything into an Excel spreadsheet and spending hours manipulating the reports to get the outcome that our company required for individual, specialized reports in payroll and human resources. The project management module also has one grave error in changing the appearance, flexibility, and directory for creating and maintaining transmittals. This particular flaw has cost our company a minimum of 5 hours per week in additional office clerical hours just to keep up the creating, sending, and scanning of all documents through transmittals. That's very upsetting to a fast-passed construction company that processes between 75 and 100 transmittals per week! The largest advantage I've seen since this last upgrade is that the system works faster on the Internet and I am able to access Spectrum from home.

Comments: We upgraded to Verison 14 a few months ago, and I was one of the people that really pushed for the upgrade. I have to say the training that came with the upgrade was almost nothing. The Bank Rec module is not ideal; if you try and use the down arrow it skips big groups of checks. If you use the scroll bar at the side, the same thing happens (I don't have time or patience for this). We should be able to scan on the go, like the last version, instead of having to save the scan. I do like the drag and drop though. There used to be HR tracking for applicants, and that's no longer there. It seems like the version was pushed out before it was all ready and tested. I do like the AR entry better, like how retention shows in red, and it's easy to enter checks. We have multiple companies and not being able to use different colors on the screen has created a problem. I like the layout and think you guys are going in the right direction, but a lot of work still needs to be done.

Comments: We are both a custom home builder and commercial developer, and have been using Spectrum (formerly Forefront) since 1987. Over the years, it has worked great for us, despite the fact that we have over 25 companies set up in it. More importantly, the customer support is second to none. We don't have many issues that arise, and when we do they are always resolved by the support team quickly. We are using the most current version, which is 14.07. All of the annual updates to new versions have been installed by Dexter + Chaney without an issue. Installing periodic service packs is quick and easy. They also have an easy to navigate and helpful website. Overall, we've been very happy with the software, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for new software options.

Comments: I mainly use the HR function. So far, the one thing I don't like is I am unable to track changes. This is very annoying as I work in the construction industry and we have lay offs yearly. I am unable to track the original hire date. I do like the image uploading. This is easy and an excellent tool. I am still learning all the things Spectrum can do.

Comments: I have to say, I was really impressed at the ease of use with this product! Before the new version, it was a little difficult to find certain items - not any more! Reports are placed logically, and the customizable dashboard and favorites tab help keep the items I use most just a click away! Switching to the newest version was very easy. There is a tab that directs you to a Help page, in case you have questions! I would say the only constructive criticism I would have would be the customer support. Without being one of the selected people in the office, it is sometimes difficult to ask a question to the customer service representatives.

Comments: I've used several accounting software programs since 1986 and studied software design - authoring code for various applications. The Spectrum product has a number of design problems and lack of features for HR and PR functions. There are many glitches necessitating "work arounds" and a number of reports or reporting options are missing from the selection. The ability to correct within a payroll run is very limited and causes two problems- if the set up is not 100% correct after payroll processing is initiated, there is no way to correct bad entries for add-ons and deductions. Also, correcting in Time Entry can cause the dollar amounts for add ons to disappear at check run time. I've also noticed in the Payables and Receivables a lack of functionality when accessing job or company information. Customer service can be condescending and not focused on the problem, but on solving a "user problem" instead of the root problem; creating more loss of time and increasing inefficiency in using the product. The product is not one that I would recommend for HR and PR. It is cumbersome and inelegant.

Comments: Once you understand how Spectrum works, it is fairly easy to move around the screens and populate where required. When I build crystal reports, I am able to link data quickly using Spectrums database. I am able to alter existing reports without much difficulty. I do wish some reports had more detail. I also wish the purchase order module would link directly within the work order data entry screen, not just the purchase order tab within the work order. Overall it's a user friendly software that is easily leaned.

Comments: Honestly, I haven't previously had the opportunity to use this kind of software, so I can't compare it to anything else. It is a good, comprehensive package, with modules to do most anything you need. The real prize is the customer support. I've never called and not had my issue resolved, and pretty quickly. I also really like that I can use Crystal Reports to both modify the included reports to suit my needs, but can also make new reports from scratch by querying the Spectrum tables (same with Excel).
