It has evolved into Simply Accounting and then Sage Accounting. in the 80's and 90's we used to pay between $200.00 to $500.00 yearly and had more for our money then today, you even owned your license. Nowadays it has been converted to subscription type, charge our clients thousands of dollars. and if you cancel your subscription, you can no longer use the software, not even adjust all entries. These days our clients pay thousands of dollars without even owning their licenses. There must be still some other software that allow you to have control over your license. This is insight contemplating to seek other solutions. Shame that in 2026, technologically we may be advanced, however ethically I have my concerns. I still value integrity and recommend to my clients not to fall in the trap of technology, but instead consider their needs. Pros I find Sage accounting to be one of the most user friendly for all types of users. I consider it 95% complete. Which in my opinion excellent. No software solution in the market is genuine 100% complete. There will always be something missing. Cons For Offline users it has become one of the worst. I do not recommend it 100% for offline users. It has become extremely expensive. Should be charged less. Pros The reporting feature is good. Provides a lot of detail. Reports are visually appealing. Like the feature of account statements where I can click on the invoice and brings it up without searching for it. Cons The invoices and payments/receipts are separated. I would like to see everything under each vendor's or customer's account. I have to do a lot of digging and searching around to ensure we don't pay an invoice twice. I don't like that Sage allows to pay one-off payments without documenting it as a bill. If I look up an invoice or bill, it will not show. I would then have to look under payments to see if a bill was paid. This feature gets very frustrating and is time consuming. June 23, 2026 1.0 Our experience with Sage Accounting was extremely frustrating. Customer support was among the most frustrating aspects of our experience. It was very difficult to access, and when we did reach someone, it was nearly impossible to find a person who would take ownership of an issue and stay with it through resolution. Several problems took months to resolve, costing us significant time and creating unnecessary stress. We ultimately abandoned the product and moved to QuickBooks, which was a far better fit for our needs. Pros Sage Accounting handled basic bookkeeping functions reasonably well, and the cloud-based access was convenient. The product may be adequate for organizations with very simple accounting needs and no payroll integration requirements. Unfortunately, the positives were outweighed by significant limitations, technical issues, and the lack of effective customer support when problems arose. Cons Sage Accounting feels outdated compared with its competitors. The poor integration between the payroll and accounting modules created unnecessary duplication, confusion, and extra work. We also encountered repeated technical glitches that disrupted basic workflows and required far too much time to investigate and resolve. I don't like using it at all. It was a huge downgrade from Sage 50 and I regret transitioning to Sage Accounting, but we were forced to retire Sage 50 by our IT department. Pros It's inexpensive and it's cloud-based. I can access it from any server or device, unlike Sage 50 which I could only access from my office. Cons I don't like the consolidated income statement (I wish it could be broken down by department). I don't like the way it prints cheques - I have to manually adjust every PDF before I print it and type in the comment line. It's also super buggy and confusing to use. When a client says they use Sage accounting I am much happier to be working with them. Pros Sage Accounting UI is very easy to navigate. I also find the number of ways way that it keeps track of things is superior. For example, looking up journal entries by entry number. I would definitely recommend for for small business owners that want to stay involved with their own finances, but are not accountants themselves. Accountants and bookkeepers would also love this because of all of the features and the ease of access of the reporting. Pros It's easy to use! Sage has logical flow to the information and how the work gets done. Once you know where everything is, you're flying. Reports are very good; you can get summaries or drill-down and find each transaction. Financial statements are easy to read and easy to produce. If you do run into a problem, the knowledge base is great and the customer service team really tries to solve every problem on the first go. Cons The bank connection can be a bit temperamental... I've had to re-connect countless times. Sometimes it offers the option to just re-enter the credential information, but that is not always the case. Hopefully, that is something they are working on (it has improved over time). It has all of the features we need to quickly get our work done and it's not glitchy like Quickbooks. Pros This is a professional level software at a very good price. My firm uses it for all our clients. It's easy to use if you know bookkeeping basics and has a lot of functionality. Cons Nothing. Sage is great. The only issue is that the desktop version doesn't have the ability to download transactions. We tried auto-entry but it doesn't meet our needs. We'd love to be able to import bank statements and have them auto-code the items. Auto-entry only matched with items that have already been entered. I will revise my review if and when Sage offers a solution to my dilemma. Thinking of switching to Quickbooks online which means I lose another year of data. Pros I am using business cloud and I like many of the features. It is relative easy to learn and easy to use. I like that I can access my files from a PC and from a Mac Cons I switched to business cloud on the recommendation of my accountant who uses Sage 50. I do my own bookkeeping and I wanted my accountant to have direct access to my files. He was also supposed to get me up and running on the new to me software. Because I was running late with tax returns I handed one year's worth of bookkeeping to the accountant firm. They would then migrate the date from their Sage 50 into my business cloud for a seamless transition. I was assured that this was not a problem by Sage and my then accountant. Well the accountant was not able to migrate the data because they could not gain access to my account. I even gave them my personal sign in but they were unable to migrate the data. I was so disappointed that I switched accountants. I lost a whole year worth of historical data and had to start a new file. Well, at the end of this year my new accountant ran into the same problem. He was not able to access my accounts and Sage support was not able to solve the probem. He spent several hours with them in chat and I have the chat files to prove he tried (phone support is not provided). This I find unbelievable and unacceptable and so does he. The problem has not be solved to date! Truly this must be a structual problem known to Sage So, I am stuck now paying the subcription for Sage cloud even though it does not do what I was promised. It seems that they even don't talk the same language than us. It appears that it's a machine that translate. And it doesn't translate well. Pros There is nothing I like in the only affordable version. Don't forget this : if we use the basic platform is because we are not professionals. Cons linked bank accounts only update after several days (One hasn't updated for 21 days at the moment). They un-sync constantly. We have 2 separate companies, only one uses Sage accounting, but the other company uses Sage Payroll (only payroll). Somehow an EMPLOYEE of the company that uses PAYROLL ONLY software suddenly had their name as the main person in the accounting software even though they don't work for the this company (I am the only one who uses either companies sage software and I would never have changed the name). Bank rules don't work, I've watched every video, and tried a dozen ways (including having someone online try and help). The simply don't work. The Payroll software is just as bad... The desktop version is possibly better. Pros I found it worked fairly well for keeping track of expenses, although it was a time consuming process to match everything up and reconcile. We had quick access to our customer data base. Cons I did not like sage online. I feel there could be many improvements made. It had a very difficult time working with my bank uploading transaction. Often times there would be many missing and id have to input them manually. I do not like that when I cancelled I could not download a usable file to save for tax purposes later, nor download a usable customer list. Also, in the app it would constantly sign out our guys in the field so everytime they wanted to write up an invoice on site they would have to log back in. Just not user friendly.
