Pros Fastcase was useful when it was included as a free service as part of my legal practice. It is fairly comprehensive and does a good job as a search engine to help you find a case citation. But you need to be very specific with your search queries. Cons I wouldn't pay for this program. I used it when it came bundled as a free service for my law practice. I switched to Google Scholar after it was no longer free to use. Pros Fastcase was provided as a free service from a bar organization I belong to. Fastcase was provided as a free legal research tool. Cons I never felt the search results were thorough. I am used to using Lexis and Westlaw and Fastcase left me feeling insecure. I wound up using law library resources to complete my searches which was very inconvenient. Reasons for choosing Fastcase It was free and I needed to limit my costs. Pros It's offerred for free by major bar associations and usually lets me perform adequate research on the fly. Cons There are limitations compared to LEXIS and Westlaw. Also, it may be inadquate for conducting legal research in areas where the caselaw is old. Pros The best part about Fastcase for me is that it's free and easy to use when all I have is limited access to my normal work environment. Cons It's simply not as feature-filled as Westlaw, or even Nexus. So while it's a good solution in a pinch, it cannot handle the volume of research I regularly need to do. The interface is not overly complicated and is fairly intuitive. Cons Sometimes it is not always easy to filter out criminal cases from civil cases, regardless of tweaking the search terms. I find it takes a little more work to focus in on civil cases with Fastcase as opposed to Westlaw, for example. There are so many features and I am a senior lawyer so it is difficult for me to do more than basic non complex research. Younger lawyers more adept at using computers would find fastcase a pleasure to use, however for me sometimes it is a hurdle. I do however frequently recommend this to attorney who have used the more well know and longer stand research companies Cons The difficulty for me to learn all of its attributes.
