The generous FREE version for nonprofits has many bells and whistles compared to most FREE offerings. I use software several times each week and have been very pleased with the results. I have not yet chosen to use the CANVA print option. Pros The tutorials are brief and give both visual and written instruction. It allows the novice and/or inexperienced person the ability to look professional with their presentation, yet provides multi-layer design elements for the more advanced as well. I enjoy that it gives a name for a design element by use (eg. social media, FaceBook, Twitter, Blog, Newsletter Header, etc.) as well as graphic element measurement so if you are working with a print-house or graphic designer, you have terminology at hand that will resonate. The sample templates are beautiful and varied. The emails from corporate are solely focused on tips for improving design, and don't come so frequently that you simply click 'delete'. Cons The upgrade in past year was introduced as optional but became mandatory. I've had to re-learn how to use the software because the changes affected many steps of the design process. Overall, it feels more cumbersome now than previous version. (eg. more steps to design); however, I recognize that their are more options as well. Review Source JK Jan K. Teacher Fine Art Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Canva for Quick and Easy Video Production" July 13, 2022 5.0 I was pleasantly surprised at how easily multiple layers of video could be integrated, and that templates were available but easily ignored. Uploaded video clips could easily be manipulated: reversed, picture in picture, turned not just upside down, but at angles. These features are common in video software that students would have to pay for. Combining still images with the moving image was really easy. Here is a link to a demo video I made for the class \[SENSITIVE CONTENT\] that shows all the adjustments listed above. Pros I introduced Canva to my video art students. I was so impressed by the ease of adding video on top of video. In iMovie, there is only one video track above the main timeline track. This software allowed students to create some very unusual pieces of video art. Kaleidoscopic effects were achieved easily. Adding audio was also straightforward. Although students had to option to use iMovie for their final projects, several chose to complete work with Canva. Cons As with any online software, the reliability of functions depends on the robustness of the internet. We had no problems in my class, but our videos were short. I am not sure how this might work with longer pieces of video. Also we know that we give up some of our personal information in order to use this software. It’s great for personal use and company! Pros It's a great tool to use, especially for new users. Canva can help you learn the fundamentals, offer templates and graphic elements, and help you edit it from there. This tool will help you improve your design abilities in a number of areas, including typefaces, layouts, filters, and background removal. I can also access my projects from any location with an internet connection because it's an online service, which greatly helps me leverage my remote work business model. Cons Mockup application is the one thing I would like to see improved on Canvas. Amazing flow for both. The time it takes me to build a presentation or post image is now just the amount of time I need to think about what I am going to say and how I will say it. Manipulating Canva takes essentially no time and I can do the image manipulation and color changes mindlessly as I focus on refining my message. I will, however, use this space to ask for improvements and other features I would like to see: - Faster refreshing of copied content in gallery - More and deeper integrations with social schedulers (ideally an option right in the "Publish" button) - It could be easier to search and sort visual elements (especially photos and videos) - Very specific, I know, but: I had to Google how to extend a thin line (expanding it would always make it thicker). Found out that it is possible, but practically need to zoom in on the line and carefully aim your mouse to grab the side of it... Cons If they could add in features like brightening a video, ability to add subtitles, being able to add in a really nice blur to images, removing objects in the background of an image and reversing a video or more video elements, there wouldn't be a need to go to any other platform. They are constantly updating their templates and offering more features for their users. Truly an example of finding a gap in the market and fulfilling it! Cons If you're on the "free" version of Canva, there are many features and functions that won't be available to you. I highly recommend opting for the paid plan of Canva to enjoy its full capacity. I've also shared a few tricks with some of my my clients who are coaches and consultants and they appreciated it. Overall, Canva has saved me lots of time, effort AND money. Pros It's given me the ability to create graphics for my blog and social media. Before that, I had to pay someone each time I needed something done as I'm not conversant with graphics software. I also like the sample templates and free images that are available for all users. Cons The app kept freezing as they moved to version 2.0 and this made me lose my work a few times. However, there has been an improvement and the freezing has reduced. Another challenge is when creating cover images for Facebook groups. The image size for Facebook covers does not work well with the current Facebook groups image size and it looks terrible when you create using Canva dimensions. I've found a way of working around this, but would appreciate having a Canva template instead of the one I've created. I'm well versed in Adobe Creative Suite and understand how Adobe is a more comprehensive software, and in my opinion way superior... Especially for a career designer. Canva has everything I need for most commissions I receive while not offering so many options I get lost in my own creativity. It's a great software that has a build in "governor" that actually helps me be more productive by reducing the amount of extras that are usually not needed anyways. For me, it's my first stop in everything I do. Pros Canva is and has always been a top choice for me because they offer just about everything you could ask for in a graphic creation platform while making it not so exhaustive you get lost. Career designers and your every day mom or dad can work and succeed using Canva and that's a rarity in the graphics world. Cons With the amount of great design apps out there p, and the effects of AI on the industry as a whole, I think they charge a bit too much for their service. I don't think they are severely overcharged, but I think they'd be look at differently by the community if they were a little less expensive. Wish it were a little more intuitive to access folders and organize designs quickly. Also, wish it were easier to delete a design completely from within the design itself (if there is a way, I haven't discovered it yet). Canva has so many templates to use which are very specific to what you want to post, it makes it so easy. Another problem it solves is that it makes things go by a lot faster. If I have to schedule out posts for 2 months, I can come up with all of that content in one day! Pros Canva is SO easy to use, which is great for someone who doesn't know a whole lot about graphic design. It makes posts for my job extremely easy. They also offer A LOT of free images and graphics for a "free trial" user but I upgraded to pro and got way more! The templates they offer make things extremely easy, as well. It really takes the guesswork out of making things to post on social media! Cons I guess the only downside about Canva is that even with the pro version which you pay for, you still don't have access to everything in their site. There are still some pictures/fonts/graphics that cost money ($1) which is disappointing considering I paid for a "full" membership. If I had to name another thing I dislike (although it's not hindering my work at all), the mobile app they offer isn't the best. Generally, without Canva I would never be able to create high-quality designs and images that really stand out today. Pros Canva has a variety of templates, which are very suitable for image creation. This makes it an excellent web application for beginners. Moreover, the ability to have multiple pages in the same canva document is a very useful feature. That means, I can create multiple designs and templates in the same place without having to switch documents. Furthermore, another advantage it that canva can integrate with photography and photo websites, like unsplash. That means, I don’t have to download the stock photos to my computer for use in design and then upload them. Last but not least, with Canva I can search various assets and sort them into folders. This helps keep everything organized and makes them easy to find. Cons I have been using Canva for a long time. I think that there are a few shortcomings for it. One disadvantage is that Canva may become a little slow, when there are many pages in the same document or the document contains multiple elements. Unfortunately, this can be frustrating, but it is a very rare situation. Moreover, certain things should be improved. For instance, the image library should be enriched. If they can introduce support for vector files, that would be great. I hope the Canva team can provide more features to help people in different fields have the best experience with it. Pros I don't want to discredit graphic designers, because I could never do what they do, but Canva gives everyone a little design boost that they can do on their own. It's very impactful for users creating their own marketing content who don't have room in the budget for a professional. Love love love it. Cons The only thing I don't like is that there is nowhere to view your media library. You can upload your own photos to work with, but if you don't organize them into folders (which wasn't a feature until recently) it's endless scrolling to find it. Having a way to view just your uploaded media and mass select to delete or archive it would be greatly helpful. The apps are a little clunky, though. Templates are Canva's charm: there are literally thousands and thousands of templates for every of your needs. Cons Not so many, actually. The free version lacks some functions, like adjusting text to boxes, but that's something you can still work without.
