I would definitely recommend Canva if you stick to the free version. Pros Canva is a great graphic design program that allows you to easily create a eye-catching graphics, flyers, letters, and more for personal or business use. I have been using Canva for over 4 years and use the software nearly weekly to create graphics and flyers for my mid-sized library branch. The Canva platform is intuitive and super user-friendly, even my coworkers who are not tech-savvy are able to make attractive designs with ease. There are thousands of templates, free photos, clip art, and graphics that come with the free version of Canva. You can also upload your own images to add to your designs. Cons On several occasions, I have been hit with hidden charges from Canva. At one point, I tried to pay for one non-free image and ended up accidentally purchasing Canva Pro. At another point, I tried to collaborate on a project with a coworker via Canva and Canva ended up charging me a bunch of money to add her to my "team". Review Source Kate G. I do not provide "design" services although I find what I can create in canva serve 90% of what my clients actaully need. I use the tempaltes to keep my own deliverabels on brand, but also use many of the features to create social media content and visuals for my client's ads. Pros It's super easy to use. There is no ramp up time and it's low cost. I like have so many templates to work from and find the tempaltes to be helpful from a design and organization standpiont. Cons The dashboard needs some work. The product defaults to put everything into one large dashboard. Doing large bulk operations like moving a bunch of files into a folder or erasing a bunch of images at once isn't possible. It's a great tool, but if you're trying to use it frequently for a lot of different clients it can get messy quickly. Review Source KM Kevin M. Pros Easy to use with no background in design. Lots of options are available and more are being added all the time. When needed, a quick google got the answer I needed. Cons It's hard to pick a fault with a program that gives so much for free. The pricing option is very reasonable. When you are ready to upgrade, this is a must for small businesses that need marketing materials. If I had to find an improvement needed, I'd suggest more guidance around social media creations so they meet standards before we publish. So much that I use it daily- and I've integrated it it with almost every platform for my business and personal life. It even allows creating videos which has changed the whole game for marketing. Pros Canva is one of the best softwares I've used...as someone who uses and creates visual content canva allows radical templates for do many platforms. It allows people who aren't designers to also be able to create. The best part are the multiple templates for artists and businesses. I love that you can download in various formats. Cons I do think that the mobile app version of Canva is much more difficult than the desktop version. They can improve on the sensitivity of fingertip designing. March 20, 2019 5.0 As I said before I do EVERYTHING on Canva. Even making .png files to further use in video productions. When I hired my current assistants they were really good in other aspects but they weren't the bestd in designing things. With Canva, all I did was to explain our brand color scheme, and teach them how to incorporate the templates on Canva and how to create things in the platform. And in less than 1 day they were able to pick it up! Of course Ill do more complex things in more advanced softwares but I literally only design outside Canva if I ABSOLUTELY need to. Pros I love how easy it is to use. I have always used Canva even when I was in College and I honestly did most of my assignments in it although everybody else would suggest photoshop. I know that for more advanced and complicated things I need more advanced softwares but for the everyday life Canva makes everything possible if you just have a good eye. I love how Canva also has templates for pretty much anything you may need (ANYTHING) I been using it for about 4 years and I still haven't ran out of templates specially because they always add more and more. Cons I think the mobile support could be better. Sometimes I have to design on my phone and or Ipad and if I didn't have many templates almost set already it would be difficult. Writing and Editing Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Anyone can be a designer with Canva" December 27, 2019 3.0 I mostly used this software in University when I was trying to create quick scamps of ideas without having to spend a lot of time on them because everything is easy to use and accessible, unlike Software like Photoshop or InDesign. However, once my idea was approved for an invite or a poster scamp, I'd have to make the final piece on the more complicated yet professional software. It made my life easier but compared to actual design software, it doesn't compare. This should definitely be advertised to amateurs who want to create something great. Anyone can be a designer with Canva. Pros Great for scamps/quick sketches of ideas to show other people. A lot of different fonts/colours/tools - you can truly make things personal and beautiful. Can use whatever colour you want to make cool graphs. Powerpoint is VERY limiting in making graphs so I just use this platform and then export them to use in my InDesign files. Really beautiful layouts. Anyone can be a designer! The quotes on the loading pages are great. Cons Not as professional or as comprehensive as Photoshop or InDesign. When you create a graph and export it as a PNG, the PNG is quite low quality. I was shocked at how well it worked and how easy it was to use. It's by far the best free graphic design tool I've encountered and I'd suggest it to anyone. Especially, if your projects are simple and far between. I think it makes a difference in the variety of default figures it offers me and that by combining them it guides me to a high-quality illustration. The color palette works wonderfully and the backgrounds are very useful. I can edit any image uploaded from my computer and the storage of the designs is important. Canva is interesting. Cons Sometimes the platform is slow when the layout box has many elements. This means that the quality and speed of Canva depends on the computer and the Internet connection. There are some lines that guide in the position of the images and letters, however they are not exact. It doesn't give me vertical and horizontal precision. Review Source David C. Pros Canva is easy-to-use from the jump, with a wysiwyg editor and relatively intuitive tools for manipulating images, text, and graphics. The various templates are also very helpful for quickly designing or adapting existing designs for different social media platforms. Cons The pricing for a team of people is not affordable for non-profits or smaller businesses. There are a few new features that still require some tweaking to be most useful (especially the promising video/animation features). Cons Some of the animation features are really cool but don't export to other programs like PowerPoint. A tad expensive if you don't use it enough. Canva makes you feel like a graphic designer that's capable of creating high quality work in less time than it would take in photoshop! Pros Allows you to feel like a graphic designer with its features such as layering text over images, creating gifs, marketing pieces such as catalogs, etc. Definitely purchase the annual subscription that allows you to create your brand by uploading a logo and brand colors. December 20, 2018 4.0 I've used several online design platforms and Canva, while not perfect, is the best currently available. I'm doing the annual subscription for one, which while not exactly cheap, pays for itself in the time is helps me save from trying to avoid premium level templates and design elements. If you don't have the training or design skills to create images from scratch, Canva is your solution. Pros The number one thing that separates Canva from any other of these "design for dummies" Apps is its ability to store previous designs as well as pics and images you upload. It's incredibly convenient to log-in and pull up old designs and tweek the colors/images with the push of a button and BOOM, you've got yourself a new poster, flier, banner etc. Added bonus, you can choose to download your creation as either a PDF, JPG or PNG file. Cons There are a lot of templates and images included for paid subscribers only, and the inability to filter a search to the "free" is an absolute travesty. I can't even begin to explain the amount of time I've wasted searching through their template selections, only to find one that was not available on free plans. It got so bad I upgrading my subscription but even still, there are a ton of designs which still are charging extra royalties.
