April 9, 2019 5.0 As a user with advanced graphic design experience, I will usually still opt to use Canva on certain projects, because the templates and tools make it so easy to create great visuals! For advanced designers, there can be some frustration with limitations when you're used to using graphic design software, but Canva is perfect for everyday use and when you need graphics that can be edited by others with limited design ability. It's a necessary tool for marketers that will save you SO much time! Pros One of the most user-friendly softwares I've ever used! It cut our design time and budget significantly, we're now able to create most of our digital marketing graphics in-house. The automatic resizing for different social channels is an amazing timesaver. Working in a global business, it's great to be able to have easily editable designs that can then be used as a template for when we need to translate into other languages, without the rest of the team needing the ability to work with traditional design software. Cons If you're used to using more advance design software, some of Canva's features can feel very limited. I'd love to see them improve the search functionality, you can spend a lot of time scrolling through options if you're looking for something specific. I enjoy working with Canva on a daily basis. Pros What I liked most about Canva was the easy and simple access to the different tools and materials to create. I really like the examples of the projects or the suggestions of Canva. Cons The chance to share directly on social midias needs improvement. It often gives error. I always choose to download first my post and then publish. There are few examples of formatted letterheads and the ones in the templates created cannot be copied and pasted into another project. The image bank is very diverse and even using the free version you can access almost every functionality freely. Cons Some tools and images are not free, but I understand the platform has to have some way of sustaining itself given it has no advertising space on its website. But if you are a student (take note of this tip!) you can have a free year of canva pro using the github student pack (search for it). Key features I love about this tool is the free available templates for everything, from magazine cover designs to designing a resume to templates for eBook covers etc. I also love the fact that you can do your designs and save it as a template you can reuse anytime or send you can send it to your team members. Canva is a great tool for anything graphics, you can design a logo, social media posts, ebooks and a whole lot. You save your work in either, a PNG, jpg or PDF format and you can include clickable links in your PDFs You can also get tons and tons of free pictures, icons and frames and if you see a picture with canvas inscribed, just pay a token of $1. Pros Canva is one of the most fun programs/websites/apps to play with, you can make almsot anything on it for any reason and I find that it is so much fun and motivating me to me as a creative person. I create posts for a local author and I always use canva to create posts to promote the newest work. I think the app is good but the website is great. The freedom to create and adjust is really quite fun and I think Canva is one of the best tools, I've used it for posts, ads, and making logos as well Cons The only problems I had was that for a while the app was a bit clunky, it isn't nearly as bad and I find that I use it on my phone much more now, I was also frustrated about buying the photos individually as well, but now that they have the monthly payment for Images I think it is a lot more convenient. There is NOTHING that allows you to make a graphic as quickly as Canva does period. I love the templates and pre-sized graphics to help me better tackle the various platforms. Cons There are 2 things that really bug me about this awesome software. 1) I design best by iterations. Meaning that I will have 8 or so images inside of one project. Each of them are a little different, but they build in quality as I figure out what I am trying to ultimately create on the fly. However, I don't want to delete the other iterations, as I may need them later. The problem lies in when I'm trying to resize a just one image from the entire project to fit a different set of dimensions. Example, trying to resize my Facebook Cover image into a Youtube Banner. This is a paid feature. However, when I go to resize the image, it resizes ALL of them. I wish I could just resize the specific graphic and not each iteration. 2) Exporting clean and crisp images is a hit or miss ordeal. You spend 30 minutes working on a design only to find that the final design is blurry for NO GOOD REASON. I'm telling you, if they fix these two issues I would gladly pay double for this service! You can literally design anything - logo, flyer, card etc and don't need to learn any designing techniques or skills to use Canva, you can use Canva without the minimum knowledge for designing. Everything is mainly just a drag and drop. 4. Fonts are broadly available and can be easily customized. 5. Facebook and instagram customizations are directly available. 6. I like that it's a month-by-month payment option so that I can participate in the premium subscription for the months I need it and save cost for my municipality on the months I don't. You need virtually no training to learn how to use this program and the longer you use it, the better designs you are able to produce. Canva is constantly updating and adding new features! Pros I have no design credentials but have needed to create social media graphics for community events. Canva has stepped in to support my lack of training in this area and is so simple to learn, create beautiful graphics and print materials. Their templates are well designed and easy to edit. Their premium suite allows you to set color schemes for your organization and use premium stock images and icons in all of the materials for no additional cost. The ability to add team members to designs so you can work collaboratively is incredibly helpful as well. You are able drag, drop and resize everything so it's incredibly easy to edit the design into the exact style you want. The ability to print at a low cost directly from Canva provides such a streamlining effect. I've printed everything from posters to business cards and I've always been impressed by the packaging and the final product of what I've ordered. There are so many customizations with the style of paper and finishes that it's easy to meet quality standards printing directly from Canva. Cons Every once in a while, I will get a design to exactly where I want it but, when the graphic downloads, text and/or icons will be out of place and misaligned. I have to do trial and error guessing to figure out where to misalign the text/icons on the design so it would download in the proper locations. It's frustrating. Otherwise, I have no complaints. From logos to social media templates, Canva has a lot of tools that you can use to make beautiful graphic designs. However, if you are a professional designer, you might find that there are a few tools lacking here to your liking. Pros I used Canva as a freelancer and for personal use. It is an absolutely great tool for designers and even more for those who are beginners or do not have experience with complex designing software such as those from Adobe. You can use it to design logos, flyers, posters, presentations, resumes and anything else that requires graphic design work. Making social media posts are a breeze with Canva. You can select what you want to do on the hoime page, and it will provide you with numerous templates and resources to achieve what you are looking for. You get access to images, video and text which can be edited to create a good design. You can also upload your own images and edit them. It is a great tool if you want to design a logo or a quick presentation that looks good, easily and for free. There are also some tools for collaboration among teams. Cons Although this is a great tool, the amount you can do is limited by the available resources and tools. It is in no way in my opinion, a replacement of a professional graphic designer. Because the things a graphic designer can achieve from software such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, due to the numerous tools and flexibility of said software, cannot be achieved from a software that is designed for simplicity and ease of use. Although you can do a lot with Canva and probably everything you want depending on your use case, if you want to finetune your designs and achieve a higher level of flexibility in your designs, this might not be the tool for you. I used the free version in a class a few years back, but will absolutely say that upgrading to Canva Pro has been a game changer. It allows so much more creative freedom for a great price. I 100% get my monies worth with this product/service. I use Canva constantly throughout the day for a number of different tasks. Canva has given me the opportunity to create exactly what I want, without settling for the same exact designs you see everywhere, but also provides so many ideas and examples if I am having a hard time starting my projects. I was given the opportunity within my position to use whatever software I would like to create our graphics, and there was no question that Canva was the right choice. Pros This software allows me to completely personalize everything I need. I use Canva every single day, either in the office for email campaign graphics and personalized client gifts or at home for my exclusive designs. This software is extremely user friendly. I have never had an issue finding what I need. Another GREAT addition was when I found the Canva App. I can use this software anywhere! Cons This could be user error, but no matter what device I use, I am constantly getting messages telling me that the system is using too much energy. Unfortunately when that happens, features such as "Background Remover" start to glitch. I spent a large amount of time using the erase and restore features within background remover and when I finally got the image exactly where I wanted it, I saved and within a few minutes all my edits were gone. It is my go to design shop. I remember the day of one named Publisher. I have it in Office365 but I never open it anymore. Pros Simple impactful templated design for all the new digital platforms. This takes out the headaches and detail work from a novice like myself to have perfect graphical messages placed on my social pages - even zoom backgrounds you go there and get them. Most you have to do is change a few word here, change a could there and bang you look and feel - to others- that you are top graphic artist. The templates just works. The PDF output are great. The upload feature great plus allowing for my own private content to be used without having to pay. I love it. Cons I did not always like going to the web browser to work, this was a draw back but recently that changed with the desktop version. I also think that there could be a difference price level, I wish there was like a 5 USD per month that would be more attractive. However, it is great easy to use, easy to learn tool.
